Wings Over Scotland

Who let the dogs out?

Posted on October 22, 2016 by

The popular children’s author and litigious bully JK Rowling, whose personal wealth is measured in hundreds of millions of pounds, has been devoting her time to the tricky task of finding people being rude on Twitter again.

rowlingdogs

In an attempt to prove that the independence referendum (described by the Scottish Police Federation as “robust but overwhelmingly good-natured”) had been every bit as grotesque as the Brexit one which has seen an enormous rise in serious hate crimes in England and Wales – comprising thousands of incidents up to and including murder – Rowling had cherry-picked out a few unpleasant-sounding social-media comments and compiled them into a series of delightful collages.

(We’ll leave aside that calling someone “Yoontermensch” is a fair distance removed from smashing them in the face with a plank of wood in the street, say. Though we will, as is traditional, remind readers that every single recorded instance of physical violence during the indyref came from the No side that Rowling lavishly funded.)

One of the comments (visible in the top-right corner of Rowling’s composite image) came from the Twitter account of this site. And we thought it sounded a bit off, so we had a quick check to see if we’d really said something so mean.

This was the sequence of events that it transpired had come to pass.

mcaveetydogs1

That’s the Labour leader of Glasgow City Council in January this year, calling on the unsuccessful hamster-cage salesman, BBC Scotland pundit, Daily Record columnist and hapless amateur economist Kevin Hague to “let the dogs loose” on me by way of therapy for the “unwarranted” abuse Hague was whining about receiving as a result of his endless insulting and defamatory attacks on Yes supporters.

(Hague took McAveety’s advice two days later, by suggesting this site was in some way akin to the Nazis, on what just happened to be Holocaust Memorial Day.)

haguenazi

Reflecting on McAveety’s tweet, I’d wondered aloud what the media reaction would be if I were to have used such language about a well-known figure:

wingsdogs

The implication being, obviously, that such a line would be likely to be seized upon and used as evidence of the unconscionable vileness of the Yes movement, in a way that senior Unionist politicians (let alone random internet zoomers with 50 followers) regularly get a free pass over.

After a theatrical 10-minute pause, I gave it a shot:

wingsdogs2

Having just signposted the joke so obviously, nobody took the bait at the time. But evidently Ms Rowling was merely waiting for her moment and hoping nobody would remember the context and circumstances. And today that moment arrived.

rowlingdogs

So let’s just recap: a senior elected representative of the Scottish Labour Party used some violent language about me, I sarcastically suggested there might be a double standard at play, and then a few months later JK Rowling duly and unironically used my sarcastic response as “evidence” that I wished a grisly mauling upon her.

To be honest, we’re still at least 50% sure the story will appear in tomorrow’s papers as “ROWLING SHUTS DOWN VILE CYBERNAT ABUSERS WITH THE PERFECT RESPONSE”, with Rowling’s “satirist” pal Brian Spanner quoted as an innocent victim.

Because, that, folks, is how you sell a lie.

This really has become a struggle for the soul of Scotland.

Slab are in perpetual denial that Blairism isn’t the answer to everything whilst operating on the level of a incompetent village council. The Tories have allowed UKIP back into the fold from whence they came. We have the most right wing authoritarian government in living memory and yet we cannot get beyond the ‘he said, she said’ on Twitter. We seem consumed by who is more of a Nazi.

I was willing to give some high profile Yoons a chance after Brexit but they cannot seem to get beyond a few nasty comments containing the words England or English. They seems consumed by the idea that Scottish Independence = Nationalism = Anti English = SNP.

Surprisingly, many are those that who use words for a living, yet their arguments are reductive and puerile. More than likely ego could never allow them to change sides for that would mean they were wrong the first time. So they cling to the idea of all Nationalism is bad.

Anyone can trawl twitter and find exceptions to the rule, often by fictional accounts set up just to provide ammo.

The only reasonable thing to do is to look at the actual facts and official policies of the parties. Turns out the SNP is one of the most inclusive and progressive of all political parties, advocating a peaceful civic type of internationalism, where everyone who lives here can vote in referendums, and where everyone is welcome to live and work.

You only had to watch the Question Time episode the other night, to see the nasty kind of ethnic UK/English nationalism that is dragging Scotland down with it.

I only lasted a couple of days just talking economics on the Better Together website. They banned me.

To be fair though just talking economics is a bit misleading. As my old professor joked, you can put three economists into a room and within an hour have four answers. Colin uses his graphs to prop up his a priori political position. That is fine, economic debate is a lot like that. However, let us not pretend he is an innocent amongst villains here. Colin’s economics are quite specifically sharpened along the Unionist edge and his intent is to do harm with that edge. To then be countered if one enters the open arena is no surprise. That said I would never dream of going to his blog much less harangue him.

I have been called many things on the internet. I can’t recall ever being upset or hurt once. I am not sleeping rough on the streets of Glasgow in winter, I am not a kid in Aleppo being bombed, I am not a grieving refugee wondering where my children are. The computer has an off button. Switch it off and walk away and within a week people will have forgotten who you are.

I’ve never read anything by Ms Rowling so I can’t comment on the quality of her writing.

A good friend was very enthusiastic about the Harry Potter books maybe 15 yrs ago and I made a note to maybe read them sometime, though I’m not really that much into fantasy.

Sure, I loved the Narnia books as a kid (not so much as an adult because of the blatant Christian overtones – I’m a non-religious person), I’ve liked Mary Stewart’s Merlin trilogy and Marion Zimmer Bradley’s take on Avalon.

I love the Lord of the Rings, and I’m happy that I know the amazing translator personally as a colleague and mentor – she’s a hoot, and so professional… and now maybe facing an uncertain future in Brexit Britain.

I’ve liked the Game of Thrones books, but for the past decade, GRRM has failed to deliver, the TV show will tell the end of the story and I’m not so sure the author will ever get there…

But my favourite, one that hasn’t turned sour over the decades, is Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea trilogy. It’s very much about personal responsibility, personal integrity, and tolerance. (BTW, all the people and main characters are brown, only the Kargad “savages” living on the periphery are recognisably white.)

So, yeah, I might be a potential reader of mainstream fantasy. Ms Rowling’s political stance and petty posturing on twitter has ensured I’ll never touch her books. I doubt it makes any difference to her, but it makes a difference to me.

They’re trying to stoke up violence in Scotland. They want to divide Scotland against itself, in the hope enough Scots decide to stay with the devil they know, the mother country, in fear of going the Irish way… Which, BTW, was UK state terrorism, intimidation and propaganda.

She is clearly cognisant with the essences of various philosophical ideas and uses them brilliantly and with under the radar subtlety.

My favourite, which I just re read weeks ago is ‘The Dispossessed’ which is not just uncannily accurate in its assessment of the future of unbridled capitalism versus socialist ideals. At a deeper level it is a critique on Utilitarianism.

Hey, I’ve only read the Earthsea trilogy (on my own, voluntarily) and The Left Hand of Darkness, because my university tutor (a Scotswoman) made us read it. She also made us read Robert Burns’s poetry and tried to explain “difficult” Scots words like “mirk” and “kirk” and we were all like d’oh, roll eyes. We all knew Swedish (it’s compulsory to learn it in my country) so we all saw it’s mörk and kyrka – or kirkko in my native language.

I know Russians are big fans of Robert Burns but people in my country find him more accessible because of our knowledge of Swedish. Lots of Scots words have Scandinavian roots.

Open ends challenge us readers to think for ourselves. A neat, all tied-up ending by the author puts the readers in the place of a child. “The story is done, now go to bed.”

Harry Potter is so concerned about the rise of nationalism, he waves his wand (no laughing at the back of the class) and magically the Austrian Empire is recreated as deluded Czech, Hungarian, Croat, Slovak, Polish, Slovene and Bosnian nationalists realise the error of their ways and agree to being ruled once again from Vienna. Harry is delighted by his success, and waves his wand a second time to recreate the Russian Empire. Ukrainians, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles, and Finns accept that they have been indulging in vile anti-Russian nationalism and must return to Moscow rule. Hagrid points out that the last time Europe’s map looked like the one Harry has recreated, the world was plunged into “The Great War”. Harry gently points out that only nationalism causes division and conflict, and, therefore, Hagrid must be mistaken. Harry walks away as ever triumphant, undisturbed by the shells exploding around him.

Finnish “nats” were first ridiculed and branded as “fennomaniacs” but they embraced the moniker, much like Scottish “cybernats”. The times were different, my country faced actual state cencorship of the press. Several pro-Finnish newspapers were shut down.

It didn’t matter. We didn’t have the internet but the message spread from the intellectuals to all those farmers’ societies and all those workers’ associations. “Fennomaniacs” – pretty much the majority of common people – staged “musical evenings”, skirting around the cencorship laws. They’d play dangerous and subversive music like Jean Sibelius’s proscribed, cencored, forbidden music, like Finlandia.

If we could do it before the internet, Scots can do it, but it needs to be a grassroots effort.

The reason that Labour is so low and behind the Tories is very simple. The establishment decided about 16 months ago that Labour in Scotland couldn’t save the union. They have promoted Ruth and the Tories continuously since while throwing Labour and poor Kezia overboard. That is all.

My only surprise to date is that Kezia doesn’t appear to have picked this up as yet.

Ruth has made no statement of any political substance but she has been on HIGNFY twice and she has taken the Tories up to the unprecedented heights of 20% in the polls – ie no upwards movement at all!
So it’s not actually working for them. I rather wonder what they will come up with next – as they assuredly will. I don’t give Ruth much hope of long term survival in her present position.

Keep an eye out for the SRA and other clumsy concoctions shortly.

Actually they are doing our work for us. They don’t understand. They are setting up a Scotland v the Tories contest which is exactly what we have been rowing towards for some time. While there are some Labour supporters who may vote Tory most of them will not and besides most of them are already in our camp. The LibDems will get more coverage than they deserve as they could conceivably get some Labour voters. But I now see signs of moderate Tories beginning to walk towards us as well.

    Serious question.

I’m not expecting an ‘answer’, but would love to hear your thoughts…

There must have been a point, probably late 2011, when SLab high-heid yins had a conflab about the rise of the SNP, and the obvious consequences. They must’ve done. It’s unthinkable that any competent organisation wouldn’t address such a significant threat to their status and long-term interests.

We’ve all seen McLeish’s latest statement, where he announces to a breathless nation that he’s ‘ready’ to support independence. It’s pathetic grandstanding by a has-been, but it revives an important question: precisely when did SLab realise that they’d have to enter into a pact with Tories to defend the Union?

There must have been a tipping-point. SLabbers at the highest level knew (surely?) that any alliance with Tories would be fatal. Who were they, and why did they stay silent or allow themselves to be silenced? Was there a pivotal meeting/phone-call/quiet-word-in-someone’s-ear?

To be fair, Kezia Dugdale herself may not know what happened back then, in which case she has no hope whatever of mounting any challenge to the Tories let alone the SNP.

By that time most of them were out of ‘provincial’ politics and had their pension pots sorted, so they wouldn’t give much of a fuck either way, but the point I’m trying to get at is that someone, somewhere, at some specific time, gave the nod to ‘Scottish’ Labour throwing its lot in with the Tories.

There’s no way a decision like that was in any way inevitable or ‘natural’. It didn’t happen by some strange osmosis. Someone made the decision to throw ‘Labour in Scotland’ under the fucking bus. It was sacrificed.

There was a civil war between the “whites” (the prosperous middle classes) and the “reds” (urban workers and rural poor). All of whom supported independence, just not the kind of indepence each party envisioned. It all took place with the backdrop of the Russian revolution and WW I.

It was all wrapped up by spring 1918, but the sores festered until WW II. That was a time when all Finns had to pull together to protect our independence. White, red, doesn’t matter, just throw the bloody Molotov’s cocktail! (yes, Finns invented that particular weapon.)

The US and UK make all kinds of noises about Putin’s Russia and I just want to scream. I live in a country with a thousand mile land border and a thousand year history with this country. How dare the leaders of US and UK wreck our delicate balance with our eastern neighbour! As if we were just pawns.

The “ugly underbelly” of Finland is that most Finns are anti-Russian. Because of our history. I am, though I have no problem with my Russian friends, they’re very hospitable and expansive and big-hearted and emotional and nice. Lovely people. I just don’t like the Russian supremacist nationalism that’s been stoked up in Russia in the past few years.

Perhaps having been involved in the goings on at the highest level he thought he could some how control the situation?( he does seem to be big on control) Let’s face it , if ever there was a character who over estimated his abilities that’s one but for me?

Somewhere along the line, the old guard in Labour ( including the Fabian’s), knowing they needed the Scottish seats to get control at Westminster and desperate to destroy the SNP , were willingly sold a pup by the Tories.

Brown, Mandelson, Alistair Campbell these guys thrived on trying to show how clever they were, the thrill of the game , the machinations of pulling people’s chains as does George Osbourne etc.

Perhaps they really did believe their own hype , I’ve seen it first hand when you set up ‘ an elite’ group who then come to believe they are infallible.

That’s quite a question to want answered in a post,it would probably take a book.

Anyhoo for what it’s worth I don’t see there being a specific meeting, although not impossible (saw a documentary a while back on a Nazi meeting that came up with the final solution shit) it’s probably more of a collective world view.
Where within that mindset they align themselves and a narrative is created.
Whereupon the localised decisions are taken that best fit their desired outcome.

EG, I don’t think that there was ever a meeting anywhere to change Social Security to Welfare.
This not only changed the name of it,but also changed the aim of it.
This change, by anyone’s interpretation of what the Labour party are ment to be for, does not make any sense.
Yet they did it…they all did.
All the while still claiming ownership and the safest stewardship of the whole system.

I think the posters above are probably right,in that they underestimated badly the aftermath of Indy Ref 1.
Had all of us and the SNP behaved in the expected way,any damage to Labour here, could have been repaired.
The SNP neutered and the Independence movement muted.
All they had to do was get a No vote, the MSM would do the rest.
Their behaviour between the referendum and the general election seems to indicate that they really did think fighting the Tory’s through Labour would go back to being the only game in town.

To Labour it could have seemed like it was them using the Tories to get rid of the SNP,because while the Tories don’t care about Scotland they certainly care about the Union.
Remove the network’s created over the internet from the equation and study the history of defeated movements like ours, and that’s a reasonable move to make.

Why they are clinging to that position is probably because they can see no other way to achieve their goal of Labour running Scotland in the Union.
They need all the help they can get and will take it from anywhere.
Remember that there is actually a good argument to continue with the Union and if you buy it ,it would be worth fighting for,by fair means or foul.
Especially if you are going to be one of the one’s who will be rewarded for makin it happen.

When your fellow unionists ran amok in the square, pushing children, burning Scotland’s flag and threatening old ladies. Oh and the failed attempt to set fire to the Sunday Herald office. Oh and the Labour Representative who whacked someone at a polling station.

You are correct Jk there was violence and intimidation. It was from your fellow thugs, your litigious threats and bullying and a general hatred from unionists of yes voters. Take a look at your bed fellows Jk. They are the same hardcore Brexiters now operating down south. The Rule Britania, God Save The Queen bigoted racist disk heads.

The yes vote was about leaving them behind but you still can’t grasp that. In a revolution the wealthy lash out because they fear change and equality. They are blinded by self centered greed and can’t see the people who are suffering. Money and wealth are futile and temporary. You will be remembered for your actions and what you leave behind.

Once again Jk uses the Rangers technique, deny, blame others, lash out, intimidate and an inability to self reflect.

I think it was quite simply that Power at Westminster is far more important to the Labour party than Scotland (or in fact anything else).

The Westminster MPs didn’t want to lose their jobs and they held a lot more power in the party than mere MSPs and outranked them.

Independence meant the party losing all their Scottish seats whereas siding with the tories might lose them some voters. The Scottish MPs couldn’t imagine losing their safe, ‘weigh the vote’ seats.

They were so out of touch that they even thought sending a ‘big-shot Westminster Blairite’ to head up the branch office would impress the natives sufficiently to bring the voters back.

I heard the Gordon Wilson long interview. To put it succinctly he said that he felt that we needed between 5 to 20 years depending on circumstances for a successful independence bid. He was quite adamant that it was coming. He actually said that the currency issue was a lot simpler now. He also noted that time was on independence’s side as the British generation pass on. However, he also said May’s Hard Brexit could force the issue much sooner.

So yes he was low key compared to some of us but I am not sure he is a million miles from where most of us are on this matter.

Mis-reporting’s immediate headlines after the interview were a travesty of the content of what he said. The spin was blatant and an insult to the intelligence of anyone who had just listened to the previous half hour. The moment they started on Norway I went and made a cup of tea. “Norway digs into oil fund during downturn in oil price shock horror”. Or “Norway uses oil fund for its intended purpose expose”.

Which unsurprisingly would mean the scenario where Scotland simply negotiated a retention of the UK membership for itself rather than face an increasingly remote possibility of a veto from Spain or France both of whom seem pissed of at Westminster for some reason.

Obviously if devolution did have something to do with being in the EU and the rights we had as EU citizens Westminster might feel brave enough to move to abolish or diminish the few powers Holyrood has. Given there recent actions regard the so called Turing Bill they can whistle before I’d trust them.

Independence, or not, before Brexit completes is the most sensible course as it lets Scotland, the rUK and the rEU know where they stand and doesn’t mean they have to go through even more negotiation. The rUK and Scotland being in the single market would be the best outcome for all concerned but that’d take a bit more common sense that Westminster is displaying at the moment.

In Brexit we have the unstoppable force approaching the immovable object of Europe, with Scotland currently stuck in between.

I do not think Westminster is the unstoppable force at all by design, but unstoppable in the sense of a runaway train without anybody’s foot on the brake. By contrast, I suspect our Southern cousins might be surprised by just how inflexible Europe is planning to be. Brace, brace, brace for impact Scotland….

IF, and I hope that’s a big IF I am correct, then now is the time for some crisis management by the Scottish Government to formulate a buffer zone for Scottish interests before we get squished by the impact.

It might be an off-the-wall suggestion, but I wonder whether a Tory Government with Britain in crisis might consider the unthinkable, and far from opposing Scottish independence, indulge it, but on the precondition that Scotland’s independence could offer limited access of some form to the single European market for the rUK.

The arrangement might be similar in principle to the holding pen status proposed for Scotland. Suppose instead Scotland rushed to independence with the blessing of both Europe and Westminster, and it was England which was offered a transitional status, on its way out of Europe, but given perhaps a three or five year transitional period to refloat its economy and adjust to the new reality, or more likely, suffer the impact of Brexit, recognise the calamity of it, but have a little breathing space should the country suddenly wake up to the folly of exiting Europe.

Scotland could be the transitional conduit for trade between the EU and England, in itself a transitional status for Scotland. There would be a strong element in the deal of European compromise to placate the Britnats, and a corresponding injury to the UK’s hubris to please the Europeans (and very real change in status). Scotland gets Indy, Westminster gets a temporary soft Brexit, and/or time to change its mind, and Europe doesn’t lose U.K. trade over night, but does lose Westminster’s arrogance and obstructiveness over EU affairs.

The biggest downsides would be whether the rUK’s economy could properly survive with crippling debts, an even worse balance of trade, and the loss of Scottish assets. That alone could be a deal breaker for Westminster, but Westminster is deep shit whatever it does. At least this uncomfortable choice has tangible benefits.

The other downside is Europe itself. For some I am quite sure news the U.K. was leaving Europe was a golden opportunity not to be missed. They won’t be in any mood to concede ground.

What think yee’s to that scenario?

Unless shes knocked one back but she doesn’t come across as the type to say no to honours from the royals. Like what say Lord Darling of Rnalashoos clearly struggled with, she’s a socialist worker but makes mountains more money than Lady Mone of Mayfair.

So if future Lady Rowling of Mayfair can get some leverage sticking it to vile separatists on twitter, its a little effort for a lot of UKOK honours Q jumping, no matter how spurious.

And I’m one of them as are many many others, all SNP members know this

Just because Gordon is no longer the presence in the party he once was and he’s getting on a bit doesn’t make him immune, if he’s not fit to be there then he shouldn’t be, if he is fit then he needs no pity from anyone either
    That would be hugely condescending

A few weeks ago, I saw mention on Twitter about a Fife cavalcade for independence. I’ve seen ONE graphic about it –

I uploaded that to the WWW as it only appeared to be visible on Twitter and/or Facebook. I’ve seen no more info about it, only that assembly is at Fluthers car park in Cupar at 10am.

    What’s the route?
Is it ending back in Cupar?
I read that the Yes Bikers had been invited. Do they know?
    What’s the finishing time?
Are any stops en route planned?

I was pushing this event at the Holyrood rally yesterday but the only info I could offer was the start time and location.

But if you actually listened to Gordon questions have to be asked about his understanding of the debate, take oil prices, why mention that? That is a unionists misconception, at no time was the argument for independence based on oil. As for timing, did he not read the manifesto? Again he argues from the narrative of SNP bad, why what is is motive?
Perhaps he and another old SNP guy are not happy the rise of independence has continued unabated, I do wonder why? Well perhaps not!

The thing is that if Wilson, and MacAskill and others do the party line thing, all they’re doing is preaching to the converted. The “hierarchy” can’t go much outside, so it’s left to previous SNP high heid yins to do their thing, because they know that the media will be only too glad to listen to them. And it gets the message out, keeps it being talked about.

Salmond does the same thing in a different way, and because he’s “I want the Ref NOW” kind of thing, that’s not what Sturgeon is saying, so he gets oxygen on the media who hope it’ll stir up dissent and division. Meanwhile it means Sturgeon & Co can keep going with their main path – pursuing all EU avenues until they’re shut in their face.

But nobody should doubt Wilson and MacAskill’s committment to Independence, same as they shouldn’t doubt Salmond’s! And in his own reprobate maverick way, Craig Murray does his own thing, and so do I as it happens.

Yes campaign leader lambasted for Kremlin propaganda link

A few days before the vote, a crowd outside BBC Scotland’s Glasgow headquarters protested at the corporation’s coverage, with some calling for Nick Robinson to be sacked as the BBC’s political editor.

Jenkins told the Sputnik news service, the international wing of a Russian government controlled news agency: “I would hope and expect broadcasters learnt a lot from the 2014 referendum and that there would be a greater degree of self-awareness in how the campaign is reported. So … we can hope that will happen and pressure should be applied to make sure that broadcasters are reporting the [next Scottish independence] referendum fairly.”

“It’s obviously clear that the newspapers that served as essentially propaganda outlets for the “no” campaign last time, the Daily Express and the Daily Mail and a couple of others, they won’t change. They will be in full-on propaganda mode again and that’s just one of the things you have to factor in.” Sunday Times

What he says about ‘the Daily Express and the Daily Mail and a couple of others’is interesting. Basically they are what they are and they won’t change. Similarly the hardcore Britnats are what they are! Spending any time trying to convince any of them to change is a total waste of time.

I’m off to see what I can find out about the Sputnik news service! Anyone got any info?

Well, I bloody hope it won’t. I would be most disappointed if it does, actually. It would make me lose quite a bit of trust on them because to me that would be accepting that the people of Scotland is second class compared with those in the most populated country in the Union.

“The hardists’ comments on the msm imply the minorities must just shut up and accept what the majority, that is the Anglos do and say!”

The hardists and unionists can stick their comments where the sun doesn’t shine. The UK is a union of 4 countries. According to the Better Together, this is an ‘equal’ union. This means that the people of Scotland has as much right to decide the future of their country as the people of England has to decide theirs: that is equality.

Having England deciding Scotland’s future is not equality, fairness or democracy. It is oppression, repression and suppression by stealth.

You can only use the excuse of a majority and pretend to be democratic, equal and fair if you are talking about a unique country or several that have very similar political views and intention of vote. As it is in plain sight to all those who want to see this is not the case for Scotland and England at all, so attempting to bulldoze Scotland’s will by imposing England’s one instead is nor democratic, nor equal, nor fair. It is rather, in my view, an act of aggression.
