The twisted firestarters
It’s not easy to type with your jaw on the floor, readers.
But in the six and a half years we’ve been watching the Scottish media here on Wings, this surely has to be an all-time low.
It’s exactly what it appears to be – the Scottish Sun have deliberately set fire to a baby box to simulate incinerating a newborn infant in the name of some cheap clickbait. (You’ll find no link to it in this article.) And they’ve had to try pretty hard.
The paper called on the expert services of “Ryan, a fire safety consultant with 22 years experience”, who after more than two decades working with fire was ASTONISHED to discover that cardboard burns if you hold a naked flame to it for long enough.
“I’m shocked. I didn’t think there was any way it would go up like that. That flame was only on it for 15 seconds or so.”
He added:
“It’s much worse than alternatives like a solid crib or a Moses basket”
You know, a Moses basket – those famously fireproof baby beds, as recommended by Fire Safety Ryan, that are MADE OUT OF STRAW. Nature’s asbestos.
Despite having raised the box up on some wooden staves in an outdoor yard to ensure maximum circulation of air and help the fire take hold – you know, like you do with your baby – it still took that much direct exposure to the flame to get the box to smoulder and more than four minutes under these optimum fire conditions before any visible flames began to appear.
Remarkably, Ryan felt that the image above depicted an inferno already hopelessly out of control, which makes us glad he’s not a fireman:
“After three minutes water would not put that out. It would be impossible for someone at home to tackle it.”
And he went on to be specific about some of the problems:
“The worried fire expert pointed out several safety flaws with the box. He said: ‘There are holes underneath introducing oxygen to the fire. If it was a solid unit you would not have that.'”
Which would be fine, except that the instructions ACTUALLY PRINTED DIRECTLY ONTO THE BOX (and supplied separately as a leaflet too) specifically tell you to put it inside the solid lid, blocking those holes off:
And they also tell you NOT to put it on a raised surface, like some wooden kindling:
And they also tell you NOT to smoke near the box, or leave it unattended for several minutes while some cretin holds a naked flame to it:
Or to leave it anywhere near a naked flame or strong heat source:
In other words, our elite fire professional has only succeeded in torching the box by deliberately disregarding just about every single safety instruction that comes with it. It’s an unfathomable mystery why his fire-safety company was dissolved in 2014 after just a single year in business.
As were two other fire-safety companies he set up:
Just like the mystery of why, if cardboard baby boxes are a deadly fire hazard, they’re actually given out in other countries by the fire brigade.
Curiously, the Sun declined to do a control test with some other types of baby beds or bedding for comparison purposes. To be honest, we’re not entirely confident that they didn’t fill the box with petrol-soaked rags (the lid’s closed so you can’t tell – you know, like you’d do if your baby was in there and you were trying to suffocate it to save it from dying horribly in a fire), and we’re rather disappointed that they didn’t put a doll inside so they could horrify readers with its melted “corpse”.
We presume that’ll be tomorrow, unless they’ve got a double page spread headlined
“ABSOLUTELY BATTY! WE CLUBBED A SMALL CHILD WITH THIS PIECE OF BASEBALL EQUIPMENT FOR JUST FIVE MINUTES AND IT STARTED BLEEDING! AND YET THE RECKLESS SNP STILL ALLOWS JD SPORTS TO TRADE FREELY ON EVERY HIGH STREET”
Ryan The Fire Genius did have some top general advice, though:
“If someone is sitting smoking in the house, which they shouldn’t be doing anyway, and a cigarette drops or they fall asleep that’s enough to put the whole house up.”
Unless there are a lot more houses in Scotland made entirely of cardboard than we thought, that would seem to suggest the baby box is the least of anyone’s worries.
But just to be sure, readers – do NOT keep your baby outside, raised up on a wooden platform above a naked flame with nobody watching it except for a sleepy smoker with no access to water.
We realise, of course, that most of you didn’t actually need to be told that, but then you probably don’t read The Sun.

I am baffled by the bizarre crap on here about the Wings stall. Anyone who has been here for any length of time would know perfectly well that it came into being because people wanted the WBB and Ronnie and others have devoted time and resources into distributing Wings material as widely as possible. People also wanted Wings stickers and badges so they started making them, initially for own wee events and were free of charge. Anybody that thinks selling badges at a couple of events a year is some sort of master scam need their heads examined. One of our group went to the stall and came away with a bundle of Disreporting Scotland stickers, someone said “how much were they” and she said “nothing, he just gave them to me” and she passed them around, I now have a few. As scam artists go, Ronnie has much to learn.
Come Indyref2 and Wings involvement in getting WBB2 out to as many people as possible you can be sure that Ronnie and the rest of the crew will be ensuring that supplies get through and that financial gain will be the last thing on their minds.
One or two on here seem quick with accusations but no one has ever met them or seen them lift a finger to help. I hope that changes when the balloon goes up.

If the likes of Brian and Pete, who spend all their spare time and money knocking out badges, couldn’t flog them for £100 each on the ‘Wings’s’ stall they’d never be able to afford to retire. The chauffeur driven Rolls that they need to hire to get themselves and said badges to such events doesn’t come cheap either.

I know from bitter personal experience that their badges are frequently distributed for as much as, ummm, well nothing. So where the hell do the vast profits from that go?
You know, the more I read on the subject, the more convinced I am that journalists are truly divorced from their readerships. From the flow of everyday humanity they attempt to influence and/or manipulate. I really can’t dignify their work with the descriptors objectively inform and educate. (for obvious reasons)
Most especially when it comes to Scotland’s constitutional question, they seem to genuinely NOT understand the nature and volume of response to their input. The anger and hurt their heavily coloured narrative generates, or the entirely natural need for that response. So certain are some, of their supposed educational, professional and ‘moral’ superiority, they fly into the most insane huffs that your average reader should dare to challenge or question their narrative. How very dare you by the way…etc.
On most issues, it’s safe to say your average hack has a well developed cynicism and rhino like skin. Part and parcel of the job I suppose (shrugs). How and ever, challenge their personal beliefs and their professionalism? Then yer average Hollywood diva would be both proud and envious of the level of stroomph involved. Dare to remove their payday and OMG! It goes into another level of flounce altogether.
Here’s the thing though, and there’s no getting round it for them. They’re peddlers, entertainers if you will. They sell wares (mainly influence). YOU are the end user. The recipient of those wares. You know what’s coming next of course.
If you believe you’ve been sold a bad product. If you believe you are and have been poorly served by the service and goods provided, then YOU are the final arbiter. YOU get to decide. YOU get to complain. YOU get to seek whatever justice or recompense YOU deem sufficient.
If that means shouting your displeasure from the rooftops and removing your cash to other more worthy channels? Then that is what you do and it is entirely within your rights to do so.
They don’t get to define you. YOU do get to define and judge them.
No everyone is a Wings regular. Some people might have come to Wings for the first time after seeing the stall.
So, I think it’s good practice to explain where the money goes, so it reassures people there is no scam involved; that it’s raising funds that are used to promote indy. That there is no financial malpractice.

According to BBC Scotland’s top story is that Scotland is shite and Scotland has the British/United Kingdom’s worst railway station. The next biggest story is an ex-football manager in England who is in intensive care, (I do hope he recovers), then way, way down the list of stories it seems our Scottish police dogs are the best in Britain/United Kingdom.
Apparently, though, there wasn’t an independence march in Glasgow and even if there had been then there were only tens of thousands marching and certainly not nearly 100 thousand or anything like that.

Off topic, but can’t less the nonsense written by mr Peffers on cyclists pass.
Cyclist pay for roads, as roads are maintained from general taxation and cyclists will have paid VAT, income tax, council tax, etc.
Scotland is a nation of obese and inactive people, investment in active travel such as walking and cycling helps reduce the impact on the NHS, as well as havig proven links to improving mental wellbeing and productivity.
The only way to make cycling safer is to reduce potential harm, through segregated cycling and walking lanes and other cycling infrastructure and reducing car speed.
Maybe POP (Pedal on Parliament) are better at managing the MSM? I have not seen them picket BBC offices, accuse journalists of bias or abuse them on twitter. I wonder if this helps?

As a third party observer, I just pointed out the sarcastic responses to his posts were not helpful at all.

I’ll probably regret answering you Colin but Wings “group of pals” are people who have been posting on Wings for several years and we have met each other at marches and social occasions, some of those occasions were in my own home with solid and trustworthy Wingers who want only to free our beautiful Kingdom of Scotland from the yoke of the Westminster unionist “group of pals”.
When you echo an obvious troll then you come across as accusatory and divisive. I know exactly the amount taken at the Wings stall and I know that every penny will be put to good use to further our cause.

A lesson for the SNP in that also, I think. Nicola may continually (and rightly) emphasise that a progressive Scotland needs and welcomes immigrants within an open SM/CU, but it doesn’t sit well with others in her party who are apparently as desperate as Corbyn Labour to appease Leavers, to the point of hoping to stall everything until full-on Brexit is a done deal.
Unfortunately for that latter view the Mayhem Gang has well outbid all competition for the hardline Leaver vote with a correspondingly hardline stance.
And as often happens in life just as as in elections, trying to please everyone can so very easily end up pleasing no-one at all.

I know many on here think the sun shines out the airses of the SNP so-called Scottish Govt, and people are entitled to their opinions but, I think even youse are finally getting it that devolution is just one big con.
Regarding the devolution power grab, Labour’s pretending to be pissed off, not because of the undermining of Scottish democracy but, because the Tories are blowing apart Labour’s elaborate scam that tries to pretend Scotland can have democracy within the UK Union. The UK Govt can’t be arsed with pretence.
Such is their arrogant disregard for Scottish opinion since the no vote in 2014, they have taken that as the green light to do whatever they like to Scotland, in the assumption that the win by No in 2014 means the SNP will always back down when it comes to a stand-off with the UK Govt and threats of indyref2 will be dropped for fear of losing again.
Personally, I have no issues about the Wings stall. I just thought the answers given could have been better. It was a chance to promote the Wings stall for future AUOB events.
I am not a member of any political organisation. The only political organisation I have ever been a member of is the SNP – for 1 year only. Membership allowed to lapse.
The only interests I could declare is a donation to Stu Campbell’s legal fund; Craig Murray’s legal fund and a single donation to Wingoverscotland in 2018.
However, that does not mean to say I agree or endorse everything they say. I do feel their voices and blogs are important as alternatives to the mainstream media diet of misinformation.

If a person wishes to purchase an object, and is offered a fair price for said object, and then said person goes through with the purchase of said object…and providing said object is in good condition when sold there can be no scam.
Regarding the details of how much money is taken and where it goes. Who the fuck gives a shit? Really?
Unless you suspect these small time vendors of being part of, or contributing to some real nasty shit like Haitian Child Trafficking, or funding terrorists, then what does it matter?

Yes, of course they do, but they do not also pay for what used to be called, “Road Tax”, like other road users are forced to.

Another load of unscientific claptrap. In the first place it is NOT the only way – it is one of the ways. In the second place why must other, non-cyclists, have to pay for these things?
Thirdly the myth of reduced car speeds in other than such areas as schools, elderly people’s and disabled people’s crossings is actually killing people. Here’s how. Vehicle engines work far more efficiently when running at certain speeds and without constant stop/start usage.
If, as has become the norm, an entire village has an imposed 20 MPH limit instead of the once normal 30MPH the immediate result is a third more time spent by every vehicle that moves in that village but it is far greater increase than t first seems because the reduced speed brings the engine efficiency down and there is a corresponding increase in pollution.
20MPH schemes greatly increase local concentrations of pollution for local residents. This can be reduced by by-pass schemes but by-pass schemes also take business and local services past the villages and town areas where they are used.
hen there is the increased dangers introduced by the introduction of so called, “Traffic Calming”, whereby road hazards are deliberately introduced to, “calm”, traffic. What they actually do is create even more hazards as drivers attention is diverted in avoiding the artificial hazards instead of watching out for children on bikes among other things.
So yes there is a place for 20MPH areas but they are in localised places where it can be expected to encounter children, aged and disable persons.
I wonder how many extra people within these blanket 20MPH areas have died earlier from all that extra pollution and have gone unreported. To put that another way – I’d hazard a guess that the increased death tolls from, for example, Asthma has risen in such areas but has not yet been associated with increased pollution from 20MPH restrictions. I’d bet it has been more than the number of children killed by vehicle accidents.

Aye! Maybe so – but then there is the alternative view that, “POP”, are perhaps more interested in their own selfish interests and less interested in others who, perhaps, have no choice in the matter – like the old, infirm, disabled and who have no other choice than use some form of vehicle just to be able to get out of their houses. We regularly here stories of campaigns to either ban the use of disability scooters and wheelchairs to be either banned or licenced and insured but never the same for bikers on the footpaths.
In any case my main aim was to highlight that small children can be let loose on roads on their bikes without any form of training or supervision and I’m sure the provision of cycle routes would do little to prevent that danger.

No need to apologise prior to setting out logical deficiencies in arguments.
Eventually, when we have a higher prevalence of non carbon vehicles, the pollution issue will take a back seat and the issues will be about cars/ children / cyclists / pedestrians all claiming ownership of their local streets.

Under the Scotland Act 2016 50% of the 20% and 5% VAT that is raised in Scotland will be assigned to Scotland from 2019/20.
As part of the EU, VAT could not be devolved. Nothing to stop that happening now.

there was the wings flags on the stall at the right end of the row nearest the stage. and no sure if it was on your stall or the one to the left but, there was also a row of flags up a pole with a wee Catalonia pendant type flag at the very top, which I thought was a nice wee touch.
I only noticed a couple of people manning the stall, one being a thicker set guy.
I would have stayed longer if I’d known Craig Murray and TS were the speakers. Huge respect for his and TS views on Scottish indy.
I saw the bikers arrive as I was leaving. They passed me on London Road and parked first in a wee square just off London Road. They made an impressive site – and sound. Well done bikers for independence!

I don’t listen to the BBC, I do listen to Manx Radio, on this morning’s news
reports, they said that the Manx Government was looking to introduce National Insurance Contributions for Pensioners as they had an agreement with the UK Government to this end.
Now the Manx Government has been keen to keep the UK Gov onside recently as they were getting a pasting regarding there Tax Haven status even then I cant see the Manx Govt agreeing to this if its unilateral which raises the question.
Does this mean that if we vote No then Pensioners will have a 10% tax hike?
As far as I am aware, nobody has mentioned this, its not in any Manifesto as far as Im aware. Another stealth tax?
