The Flounce-And-Bounce Counts
We haven’t said much about the huge furore whipped up by the Guardian in recent days around spurious allegations of racism/online abuse by supporters of Scottish independence, made first by Sadiq Khan and then by a deranged “Better Together” activist who also thinks all vegans are racist (or something).
Partly that’s because we covered the initial speech by Khan and the fallout from it pretty extensively, and partly because we didn’t want to feed the Guardian’s clickbait.
However, when the activist who was allegedly “hounded off Twitter” in fear for her life – fear caused by supposed comments that nobody has actually seen – miraculously recovered her bravery less than a week later (coincidentally just in time for the launch of her book), we thought it was probably time someone started keeping some records.
Because Claire Heuchan isn’t the first person who’s wept all over a salivating Scottish media about how they were “forced” off Twitter because of supposed abuse from vile so-called “cybernats” only to suddenly bounce back in finest Alan Partridge style when they noticed nobody was paying them any attention any more.
(Perhaps some kind soul could explain Twitter’s blocking facility to them.)
There are, in fact, several precedents, most of whom have sought to make capital out of the issue in one way or another. So for future reference here’s the current league table, ranked in reverse order of the shortest self-imposed exiles from publicity.

As we noted some months ago, the formula for this sort of thing is now extremely well established and predictable: write the provocative and usually offensive article/s, receive (or invent) the desired angry response, flounce off claiming victimisation, “silencing” and threats, trigger series of articles by yourself and/or others attacking the SNP/the Yes movement, leave a pause, then slink back quietly as you always intended to do all along.
It seems only fair we should recognise the most skilled practitioners of the art. Claire Heuchan, young and inexperienced, was just a little too artless – the pause too short, the evidence too suspect, the timing of the return too transparent.
We salute Neil Oliver for carrying the task off with professionalism, although with his income stream being unaffected he had by far the least to lose. We look forward to the next challenge for his title, which we suspect won’t be too long in coming.
Oh the poor souls.

Not sure Neil counts as a flouncer if he never really used it. It is easy to stop smoking if you don’t smoke.

Why don’t we on the Yes side use the same tactics as the Unionists. At the last Scottish referendum I think we were far too slow in using quick soundbites to rebut Better Together claims. The tendency is to respond with reams of figures which is like Greek to many listeners.
When Scotland’s ever changing deficit is brought up I always say it’s terrible and agree with them but then say 30 years of an oil bonanza under Westminster and we end up with huge debts. UK clearly no good for Scotland, time to get out!
Yet to hear anyone on the Unionist side with a coherent response to that comment. In fact quoting figures is a waste of time.
Her book sounds like a lot of pish to me. Vacuousness is now a literary art form. She really needs to take a chill pill and embrace independence.

Then, of course, you have the professional insult. Those who intend calculated insult, followed by faux outrage, faux victimhood and faux heroic resurgence to achieve an end goal of either personal advancement or the advancement of their cause.

The crude stereotyping of Scots is normative. It occurs regularly in all of the UK media. The below the line comments are often just racist. After the political Union things were little different. Scots were considered rather untrustworthy ‘allies’ well into the 19th century. As we prepare to dissolve the Union things have just come full circle.
The sheer entitlement of these people who believe they can insult whole groups of people with no comeback. Journalists are the worst – they genuinely saw Twitter as their promotional playground and when people dared to personalise their criticism they ran screaming.

The Supreme Court did not rule on the sovereignty of the Scottish people as individuals. What they said was that the Scottish people gave their Sovereign power to their representatives who sat in Westminster which is the Supreme power over legislation. Thus the will of the Scottish peple is expressed.
There are ways to counteract this but it would probably take several pages to write down.

Comedian Susan Calman’s same BBC Scotland style grad intake generation as future Baroness Ruth Davidson. Its interesting to ponder, if they both ponder, how different their careers have been, starting from very similar points. If they can hold down and back Scottish indy, Davidson’s got a huge career in UKOK politics ahead of her, which is also quite an incentive, to make sure Scotland does not becoming self governing.

I think the point is that Heuchan’s PhD is about black women’s feminist activism and use of digital media. This is where the dishonesty comes in – she is creating the storm which she will then use for her thesis. It is not organic or authentic and seems entirely contrived.
As for the rad feminism vs ordinary feminism – I believe it involves challenging the ‘patriarchy’ in every area of society rather than relying on legal or political process for equality. It may seem to seek to eliminate the male perspective completely in some areas.

I reckon this phenomenon has a deeper basis. Imagine that you are a (mostly middle-class) progressive Labourite in Scotland with a typical high level of self-entitlement.
But you can’t help noticing that popular support for your party is seriously slipping in favour of the VSP (Vile Sep Party). Maybe some of your party’s officeholders are more than a little lazy or unimaginative after so many years in Unfettered Charge of Everything, but never mind, you are very confident that your principles are sound – the fact that you’re a supporter of the party that has exclusive rights to those principles proves it. You’re justified.
Fundamental change isn’t necessary because you already have a handle on things. So the VSP must necessarily be mountebanks who are insincere pretenders to your progressive priesthood. Cultists. How to react, both socially and personally?
Socially speaking, your opponents can’t be those nice freedom fighters you have supported in faraway places for all those years in the past. Because they are your opponents, for goodness’ sake. Stands to reason. They must therefore be scheming vultures playing on peoples’ cultural history just the same as all those other Nasty Parties who thought and did beastly things in the past. So you don’t have to deal with their self-evident inclusiveness. It must be some kind of mirage, since otherwise your fundamental self-belief would be challenged.
Something similar happens on a personal level. You indulge in an bout of virtue-signalling on the pages of a helpful Unionist paper or on Twitter. You are an expert at it, after all. It’s your game. But things no longer work out as you planned. You get oodles of criticism, some of which is well-aimed and would unsettle you if you thought about it too much, but thankfully you don’t need to, because you also get a fair scattering of irrelevant personal abuse which, being self-evidently unjustified, removes your need to re-evaluate, and instead simply confirms everything you previously thought about the vile seps and their true nature. Introduce irrelevant right-on peripheral issues to stir things up more and invite another round of complaints of the same variety. This allows you to retreat into your little private wagon circle and get the support of the other wagon-circlers who are doing the very same thing. The mutual reassurance of the True Martyrs.
You quite like that reassurance, it gives you a good hit. You also get noticed. It feels so good that you want to do it again. No need to think, no need to consider why the support of ordinary people is insidiously but relentlessly slipping away from you, even though it’s constantly niggling away in your subconscious and undermining your self-confidence. No, all too unsettling, instead just one more easy stirring of the vile upstarts to get a pat on the back from Jakey. What’s not to like?

Hammond is just a liar. They are borrowing £500Billion for HS2, Hinkley Point, Heathrow and Trident.
The rest of the UK is borrowing £100Billion a year. Scotland has to pay off the debt.
The EU costs Scotland nothing and brings benefit. Investment and renewable Grants etc. More than the UK. Westminster takes extra CAP payments intended for Scotland. The EU nearest, biggest market.
Hammond is speaking as if the UK is in ‘normal’ mode; giving the impression that everything is as it should be and is under progressive control. He has completely avoided the hard Brexit on our doorstep and the cliff edge just beyond.
This budget statement is an exercise in fantasy and wishful thinking.

I think we, the YESers have been well and truly written off already. It’s the soft NOs /REMAINERS the red and blue tories are terrified of losing. The tactic seems to be all the YESers are racists, so don’t think about joining them. Ultimately, it won’t work. Sandcastles can only resist the tide for a very short time before they collapse (first big wave, usually). 🙂

Thanks ScottishPsyche – I struggle to see how this would be allowed as the basis for a PhD thesis. Surely this, on an academic level is questionable.
Yes, I admit to googling radical feminism as my old feminist methodology texts are so out of date! Only my opinion, but it appears an angry, volatile and rather misandristic strand of feminism – there appears no balance and low tolerance of any other perspectives other than from fellow radical feminists – or those who agree with them.
The concerning issue is that if you dared disagree or challenge – with what could you be accused off? Is this fair ? How can balanced political, social and moral discourse take place on a radical feminist foundation? I think this in itself tilts the power balance as people are concerned of being labelled racist, homophobic etc, so they don’t speak out.

I don’t personally think Davidson has a huge career in front of her. I think she’s actually gone nearly as far as she can go. She might eventually get a nice sinecure down south, well paid and all that (but don’t underestimate the prejudice both anti-homosexual and anti-Scots that simmers under the Tory party). Yes, the party apparatus is clearly targeting the “soft no’s” with a kind of class slander that won’t work, essentially because it’s manifestly untrue.
My point was though (if in perhaps a long-winded way) that, besides the apparatchiks whose motives are utterly cynical, many SLab supporters are having to deal with a serious existential challenge right now, and not all are dealing with it very well. Their traumas are surfacing in public in malformed and self-destructive ways.
All the more reason then to salute those who have already been able to free themselves from the darkness of their self-constructed jail cell and step out into a scary world of brightness. And also in due course welcome those who yet have to take that big-little step, but who will. It can’t be easy.

There are still too many folk who believe what the BBC/Papers tell them – or if they think there may be an agenda they believe they wouldn’t outright lie and there must be something in it. The budget bla bla, however, it then came on that the UK now owes Brussels £1.5 billion for trades with China involving false bills/ receipts.

I think your problem is that there are not many Unionists around – other than in Scotland. There are some politicians, party activists and media hungry celebrities that might have a view but most of the 60 odd million people that live outside Scotland are pretty relaxed about the whole “Union” thing i.e. we take the view if a majority want to be in , then fine, if the majority want to leave, then fine.
A common mistake made by people here on Wings is that those that are not out and proud indy supporters must, by definition, be “Unionists” – wherever they live or whatever their background. Which is a mistake – and one of the reasons why many here are unable to understand what needs to be done to achieve their objectives.
As usual, when we get to discussions in this topic area, I invite the Rev to tell us how much the good folk “in the sarf” that he works with, and around, spent worrying or caring about the subject of Scottish Independence today?

Unionists? I have often opined that there are no Unionists outside Scotland (and NI) because no one else believes there is a Union. There is an overwhelming England which exerts power, influence, and culture over other parts of these Isles. In the minds of most inhabitants the UK effectively becomes a Greater England.
Some Scots recognise this and believe we can make better choices by ourselves for ourselves.
Those who oppose Scottish self determination, and live outside Scotland, must IMO do so from imperialistic nationalist reasons, not Unionism.

Just had a befuddling conversation with an ex pat Scot from fairly well off highland farming stock. The family have moved to Shropsire from Devon and she said the anti Scottish sentiment there is quite scary. (It does happen down here but its fairly subtly done!)
They were No voters, not keen on the SNP and a close family friend was apparently one of Salmond’s speechwriters who told them Salmond got out after the Ref because he knew Scotland could not afford to be independent due to large debts. They believe that to be the case still. She mentioned Scotland’s debt, Greece and eternal doom all in the same sentence.
However she admits that Brexit was a shock and will be a disaster for the farming industry. Interestingly she said highland farmers were leavers, Devon framers were remain and Shropshire farmers also leavers.
I did try to explain the debt rubbish and explained a few things they didn’t know about how the Barnet works. Apparently the NHS in Shropshire is in dire straights.She seemed to think 56 SNP MPs should be doing more but I told her about all the amendments that were voted down including FFA because they will always be outnumbered by rUK MPs.
I will send her my Wee Blue book and see if she can be persuaded so she can persuade her family in turn. I got the impression they were now very soft Nos after Brexit.

Courtesy of a year working in Iraq, I now have to apply for a Visa in person at the nearest consulate. So much for my visiting Rekyavic on the way back. Somebody should maybe have a word with Vonny Moyes at the National, who was putting out a sob-story for her in her column a couple of days ago. While she didn’t mention her by name, she said it was a friend who was apparently “chased” off Twitter by misogynistic bullying after she wrote a piece in the Guarding that was critical of the independence movement. It doesn’t take a genius to work out it’s the same person. It put my back up for the whole of her piece, and regardless of whatever else she might have had to say, I instantly regarded it from the outset with suspicion, so she lost it for me.

You never know. I used to have my own repellent I put together with fresh bog myrtle and other herbs, it really started going well, abroad as well, but the EU put a slow stop to that with its expensive registration I couldn’t afford though trading standards kept me going for a few years longer, little changes to wording, that sort of thing. And in spite of that I voted Remain. For the wife, kids and Scotland, not me so much.
I brought up the Heuchan flounce with a work colleague last evening. She is an EU citizen studying at Stirling University, and has experienced this person at first hand. The way she described Ms Heuchan is as a complete Millie Tant figure, blaming all and sundry for the plight of the poor downtrodden sisterhood, although she isn’t long tearing into ladies who take care of their oxters and such, as they are “just pandering to the male expectations of women”. A thoroughly nasty piece of work apparently.
Claire Heuchan’s racism article offends me as does her apparent diliberate misunderstanding of much of the Independence Movement.
That said, I am so sad for this young woman, Claire, who seems to be so so bitter.
Bitter about a people’s wish for freedom and self determination.
How does that sit with feminism?
And is it just me, or is Claire Heuchan very unkeen on white people? (Am I allowed to say that?)

A few friends I have are feminists (circa 1970’s/80’s!) but are fun loving, happy, inclusive people who care first and foremost about gender and structural inequalities, peace and nuclear disarmament. And they shave their legs 🙂 some are married or living with partners. If that is their take on feminism, then fine!
I remain perplexed at giving yourself a handle or description – as she has: ‘black, radical, feminist’. This, in my opinion is divisive and goes against what feminism is about. Why feel the need to do this? But, each to their own.
How sad it’s all got very anti-men with the patriarchy to blame for everything, causing some feminist thinkers to rethink their belief systems.
