The Flounce-And-Bounce Counts

Posted on March 08, 2017 by

We haven’t said much about the huge furore whipped up by the Guardian in recent days around spurious allegations of racism/online abuse by supporters of Scottish independence, made first by Sadiq Khan and then by a deranged “Better Together” activist who also thinks all vegans are racist (or something).

Partly that’s because we covered the initial speech by Khan and the fallout from it pretty extensively, and partly because we didn’t want to feed the Guardian’s clickbait.

However, when the activist who was allegedly “hounded off Twitter” in fear for her life – fear caused by supposed comments that nobody has actually seen – miraculously recovered her bravery less than a week later (coincidentally just in time for the launch of her book), we thought it was probably time someone started keeping some records.

Because Claire Heuchan isn’t the first person who’s wept all over a salivating Scottish media about how they were “forced” off Twitter because of supposed abuse from vile so-called “cybernats” only to suddenly bounce back in finest Alan Partridge style when they noticed nobody was paying them any attention any more.

bouncingback1

(Perhaps some kind soul could explain Twitter’s blocking facility to them.)

There are, in fact, several precedents, most of whom have sought to make capital out of the issue in one way or another. So for future reference here’s the current league table, ranked in reverse order of the shortest self-imposed exiles from publicity.

————————————————————————————————-

5. CLAIRE HEUCHAN (Better Together activist and Proud Brit)

heuchanquit

“Forced off” Twitter: 27 February 2017
Return to Twitter: 6 March 2017

Elapsed time: fractionally over six days.

(Just long enough to wipe over 16,000 old tweets, several of which had exposed slightly embarrassing previous opinions for someone aggressively positioning themselves as an anti-nationalist person of colour.)

4. CHRIS DEERIN (Daily Mail columnist)

deerinquit

“Forced off” Twitter: 5 September 2015
Return to Twitter: 19 September 2015

Elapsed time: two weeks

(Deerin subsequently made several claims to be “off again”, but none of them were marked by any discernible break and he now tweets prolifically.)

3. DAVID TORRANCE (ubiquitous pundit)

ttt7

“Forced off” Twitter: 2 August 2016
Return to Twitter: 2 September 2016

Elapsed time: one month

(Coincidentally just in the nick of time to get back before Twitter would have deleted the account permanently – it allows accounts to be “suspended” by the user for up to 30 days.)

2. STEPHEN DAISLEY (grandchild of socialist)

daisleyquit

“Forced off” Twitter: 18 August 2016
Return to Twitter: 4 Feb 2017

Elapsed time: five and a half months

(Daisley’s disappearance from public view was the most-ballyhooed of all, leading to an avalanche of articles decrying in hysterical and luridly paranoid terms the SNP’s fascist, one-party-state suppression of dissent in the Scottish media, a phenomenon which will come as a very considerable surprise to anyone who’s ever read the Scottish media.)

1. NEIL OLIVER (staunch haircut opponent)

oliverquit

“Forced off” Twitter: 17 August 2016
Return to Twitter: none

Elapsed time: permanent

(Weirdly, despite Oliver being a very light Twitter user – around one tweet a day, with the last recorded one being in September 2015 – and there being no actual evidence of his being abused, he’s the only person we can find to have actually flounced without bouncing.)

————————————————————————————————-

As we noted some months ago, the formula for this sort of thing is now extremely well established and predictable: write the provocative and usually offensive article/s, receive (or invent) the desired angry response, flounce off claiming victimisation, “silencing” and threats,  trigger series of articles by yourself and/or others attacking the SNP/the Yes movement, leave a pause, then slink back quietly as you always intended to do all along.

It seems only fair we should recognise the most skilled practitioners of the art. Claire Heuchan, young and inexperienced, was just a little too artless – the pause too short, the evidence too suspect, the timing of the return too transparent.

nastyclaire

We salute Neil Oliver for carrying the task off with professionalism, although with his income stream being unaffected he had by far the least to lose. We look forward to the next challenge for his title, which we suspect won’t be too long in coming.

Why don’t we on the Yes side use the same tactics as the Unionists. At the last Scottish referendum I think we were far too slow in using quick soundbites to rebut Better Together claims. The tendency is to respond with reams of figures which is like Greek to many listeners.

When Scotland’s ever changing deficit is brought up I always say it’s terrible and agree with them but then say 30 years of an oil bonanza under Westminster and we end up with huge debts. UK clearly no good for Scotland, time to get out!

Yet to hear anyone on the Unionist side with a coherent response to that comment. In fact quoting figures is a waste of time.

Vonny Moyes must surely be in the running as an outsider, she’s just flounced off sourly pouting. With some of these people it seems like pure drama queen pissyhissyfit histrionics: they go all oh-my-giddy-auntie then come back five minutes later, loving the attention and poor-me victimhood their self-imposed anti-social-media ostracism has ‘forced’ upon them(selves). Nothing worse than a Professional Victim. They’re far too narcissistic and attention-whorey to actually stay buried, and love to play the ‘chased away for telling the unpalatable truth’ fake-disgrace card. Hilarious.

It’s so pathetic it’s actually funny, now. Heuchan is clearly such a reality-cloistered Tory hardcore racist (her vitriolic rants at indy supporters are just self-projection of the most obvious kind) that her inclusion in the hateful-white-Scottish-racists mass debate can only cause harm to the unionist side. Her constant tweets belittling white people, from her affluent Tory tower of powerless power, won’t endear her to many of any party, indyhating or not. She’s a spent force already, a transient novelty act, a two-headed dancing dog, though I wouldn’t be surprised if she tries to make some sort of crap Katie Hopkins-alike bullshit career out of her fifteen tweets of fame. Ludicrous, all-in-all. Next!

A democratic outrage: Scotland’s constitutional position and Brexit

Seems the sovereignty of the Scottish people has disappeared because an English Supreme Court has ruled what everyone already knew, that the people not parliament are sovereign in Scotland. Can the SC just change history like this? It seems Westminster already has.

But the most basic flaw in their makeup is that they don’t seem to understand that the people reading their rantings are not stupid, a lot of people like myself have lived through Labour and Conservative Westminster Governments over the decades with rage that their fellow scots cannot see these parties for what they are
How can people like oliver justify building 2 aircraft carriers costing billions of pounds, while round about them people have to go to foodbanks, does this person not see a problem with things like that, of course people like him are doing ok, they don’t have to work for peanuts or live beside the great unwashed masses that they like to talk down to from their ivory towers
As for being hounded off twitter, you have to be a bit of a twit to take that media forum seriously in the first place, sure, some girls threatened to kill other girls on there, what did the girls who where being threatened do, they reported some moronic pop star for assaulting them at an airport , hardly a threat that anyone with half a braincell could take seriously, of course they should be prosecuted for making the threats, but don’t hold your breath for that to happen
As for papers like the guardian, why people even read these purveyers of absolute crap is beyond me, they are not even any good to hang up on a nail in the toilets of this country, i would not use them anyway, i must admit i like a little piece of comfort round about my back door, you see when i was a young boy, we could not afford toilet paper, so my dad brought home some paper from his job, unfortunately my dad was a joiner and the paper he brought home was sandpaper, yes we had it rough allright !

The Supreme Court did not rule on the sovereignty of the Scottish people as individuals. What they said was that the Scottish people gave their Sovereign power to their representatives who sat in Westminster which is the Supreme power over legislation. Thus the will of the Scottish peple is expressed.

There are ways to counteract this but it would probably take several pages to write down.

Also – and I ask this in all seriousness as I would love to know – what is a black radical feminist as apposed to a feminist? Is there a difference?

And she is doing a PhD …and has time to write a book too. And tweet (and delete tweets) and facebook lots. And do book publicity. Wow.. kudos to Claire – friends undertaking a PhD found it all-encompassing and no time for anything else for several years. Perhaps it depends on the subject matter.

I think the point is that Heuchan’s PhD is about black women’s feminist activism and use of digital media. This is where the dishonesty comes in – she is creating the storm which she will then use for her thesis. It is not organic or authentic and seems entirely contrived.

As for the rad feminism vs ordinary feminism – I believe it involves challenging the ‘patriarchy’ in every area of society rather than relying on legal or political process for equality. It may seem to seek to eliminate the male perspective completely in some areas.

That was my simplistic understanding but I may be completely wrong. No doubt someone has written a PHD on it.

    says:

I reckon this phenomenon has a deeper basis. Imagine that you are a (mostly middle-class) progressive Labourite in Scotland with a typical high level of self-entitlement.

But you can’t help noticing that popular support for your party is seriously slipping in favour of the VSP (Vile Sep Party). Maybe some of your party’s officeholders are more than a little lazy or unimaginative after so many years in Unfettered Charge of Everything, but never mind, you are very confident that your principles are sound – the fact that you’re a supporter of the party that has exclusive rights to those principles proves it. You’re justified.

Fundamental change isn’t necessary because you already have a handle on things. So the VSP must necessarily be mountebanks who are insincere pretenders to your progressive priesthood. Cultists. How to react, both socially and personally?

Socially speaking, your opponents can’t be those nice freedom fighters you have supported in faraway places for all those years in the past. Because they are your opponents, for goodness’ sake. Stands to reason. They must therefore be scheming vultures playing on peoples’ cultural history just the same as all those other Nasty Parties who thought and did beastly things in the past. So you don’t have to deal with their self-evident inclusiveness. It must be some kind of mirage, since otherwise your fundamental self-belief would be challenged.

Something similar happens on a personal level. You indulge in an bout of virtue-signalling on the pages of a helpful Unionist paper or on Twitter. You are an expert at it, after all. It’s your game. But things no longer work out as you planned. You get oodles of criticism, some of which is well-aimed and would unsettle you if you thought about it too much, but thankfully you don’t need to, because you also get a fair scattering of irrelevant personal abuse which, being self-evidently unjustified, removes your need to re-evaluate, and instead simply confirms everything you previously thought about the vile seps and their true nature. Introduce irrelevant right-on peripheral issues to stir things up more and invite another round of complaints of the same variety. This allows you to retreat into your little private wagon circle and get the support of the other wagon-circlers who are doing the very same thing. The mutual reassurance of the True Martyrs.

You quite like that reassurance, it gives you a good hit. You also get noticed. It feels so good that you want to do it again. No need to think, no need to consider why the support of ordinary people is insidiously but relentlessly slipping away from you, even though it’s constantly niggling away in your subconscious and undermining your self-confidence. No, all too unsettling, instead just one more easy stirring of the vile upstarts to get a pat on the back from Jakey. What’s not to like?

Its only that Scottish independence is divisive, that’s what Mayor Khan, Graun etc really mean, you’re not an actual racist (but you are really) if you don’t vote SLabour and NO, forever and ever.

Win win, vote SLab, buy the Graun, dont be a racist, which you’re not, but you probably are, really.

Ultimately though, can their, “Scots YESers are racists so start voting SLabour again Scotland to not be racist,” actually work?

I think we, the YESers have been well and truly written off already. It’s the soft NOs /REMAINERS the red and blue tories are terrified of losing. The tactic seems to be all the YESers are racists, so don’t think about joining them. Ultimately, it won’t work. Sandcastles can only resist the tide for a very short time before they collapse (first big wave, usually). 🙂

Thanks ScottishPsyche – I struggle to see how this would be allowed as the basis for a PhD thesis. Surely this, on an academic level is questionable.

Yes, I admit to googling radical feminism as my old feminist methodology texts are so out of date! Only my opinion, but it appears an angry, volatile and rather misandristic strand of feminism – there appears no balance and low tolerance of any other perspectives other than from fellow radical feminists – or those who agree with them.

The concerning issue is that if you dared disagree or challenge – with what could you be accused off? Is this fair ? How can balanced political, social and moral discourse take place on a radical feminist foundation? I think this in itself tilts the power balance as people are concerned of being labelled racist, homophobic etc, so they don’t speak out.

    Very interesting!

Its even more mentalist considering England voted Leave. We can debate all day just how hard likes of Graun creeps tried to get Scotland to fall into line with England’s Leave, in their Brexit campaigning, especially up on the Buchan coast, where all the millions and millions of Scots fisherman all wanted their UK back, apparently.

Dirty business, UKOK propaganda. Again its interesting to speculate how much higher the Remain vote would have been, if in fact UKOK hackdom was not trying to get the Scots to vote like the English, especially in Pacific Quay.

Christ knows, the whole tory BBC Scotland creep show has done its level best to blank out the EU from our national psyche for decades.

Now you come to mention it.

I’m still waiting for an answer to a question I asked a Labour Party Guy who was standing on a soap box at Speaker’s Corner at the foot of the Mound one Sunday, way back in 1946.

I was just a wee secondary school boy back then and I’m sure that particular Labour Party guy is long dead. He never quite got round to answering the question even when I repeated it several times over the years.

“Aye! Mister, So if the Ingish ir subsidising us in Scotland like whit ye say, why div ye no aa jist get Inglan oot o the Treaty o Union an mak iz aa stan oan wir ain twa feet”?

There was a brief moment of almost silence after a sharp intake of breath, (remember the SNP were regarded as a lunatic fringe back then), and then he carried on as if no one had said anything.

Not a single person in the crowd around him dared to interrupt him. Now I wonder what the reaction would be today.

My point was though (if in perhaps a long-winded way) that, besides the apparatchiks whose motives are utterly cynical, many SLab supporters are having to deal with a serious existential challenge right now, and not all are dealing with it very well. Their traumas are surfacing in public in malformed and self-destructive ways.

All the more reason then to salute those who have already been able to free themselves from the darkness of their self-constructed jail cell and step out into a scary world of brightness. And also in due course welcome those who yet have to take that big-little step, but who will. It can’t be easy.

In doing so, some women who previously held feminist views are now actually questioning feminism as it appears unrepresentative and at odds with their beliefs. I can remember reading feminist literature when the hope was to attain equality with men. I find myself looking at what they appear to call ‘radical’ feminism and can only conclude that they wish to be divisive and are polarising men against women rather than tackling inequalities

I have no idea what this type of social research contributes to society – perhaps this is an issue itself – surely social research at this level should contribute in some way to bettering society as a whole? I used feminist methodology in a healthcare/clinical context to critique research but I find myself wondering what the hell this is all about. Odd stuff.

I think your problem is that there are not many Unionists around – other than in Scotland. There are some politicians, party activists and media hungry celebrities that might have a view but most of the 60 odd million people that live outside Scotland are pretty relaxed about the whole “Union” thing i.e. we take the view if a majority want to be in , then fine, if the majority want to leave, then fine.

A common mistake made by people here on Wings is that those that are not out and proud indy supporters must, by definition, be “Unionists” – wherever they live or whatever their background. Which is a mistake – and one of the reasons why many here are unable to understand what needs to be done to achieve their objectives.

This is true, at least in part. Which is what we in the independence movement have been saying for ages: why should we put our future in the hands of a large number of ignoramuses who don’t give a flying fig about us anyway?!

Although of course there are some in the higher reaches of the English Establishment who, in characteristically self-serving mode, fear the loss of face in the world when even their adjoining home colony leaves them in the lurch.

Hence the BBC “Scoop”-like parachuting their top man, Auld Nick, into Scotland when the indyref looked like it was going the “wrong” way. As Paul Mason put it: “Not since Iraq have I seen BBC News working at propaganda strength like this.” They are not indifferent because they at least know just how much Scotland is subsidising them, despite their disgraceful public inversions of the truth.

Either way round, ignorant, indifferent, careless, or in the case of the government, exploitative and interfering, we here in Scotland are clearly better off running our own affairs.

Which of course then begs the question, just why are you so persistently anxious to persuade us we’re mistaken? =contemptuous laugh=

Unionists? I have often opined that there are no Unionists outside Scotland (and NI) because no one else believes there is a Union. There is an overwhelming England which exerts power, influence, and culture over other parts of these Isles. In the minds of most inhabitants the UK effectively becomes a Greater England.

Some Scots recognise this and believe we can make better choices by ourselves for ourselves.

Those who oppose Scottish self determination, and live outside Scotland, must IMO do so from imperialistic nationalist reasons, not Unionism.

As usual, when we get to discussions in this topic area, I invite the Rev to tell us how much the good folk “in the sarf” that he works with, and around, spent worrying or caring about the subject of Scottish Independence today?

They all do really want England to lose control of the Scotland region of greater England sensibledave.

Its as simple as that. England will be fine sensible, diminished yes, but at the very least, returning to a mid sized northern European power, like say Spain and Italy and it will be good for the English, a last hurrah hot war somewhere maybe, or for sure, those multi billion planeless new giant carriers will have to be used for some such slaughter of peasantry, in some such hot lands, but otherwise sensibledave, England should be just fine being just England.

Just picked this off the Revs Twitter.

It’s an amazing work of 32 pages called, Burning down the House.

A collection of 5 tragic years of Labour led ineptitude. Need to get it shared widely. Also, there is a fundraiser for getting it printed.

    It’s excellent work, worth reading.

    O/T

Just had a befuddling conversation with an ex pat Scot from fairly well off highland farming stock. The family have moved to Shropsire from Devon and she said the anti Scottish sentiment there is quite scary. (It does happen down here but its fairly subtly done!)

They were No voters, not keen on the SNP and a close family friend was apparently one of Salmond’s speechwriters who told them Salmond got out after the Ref because he knew Scotland could not afford to be independent due to large debts. They believe that to be the case still. She mentioned Scotland’s debt, Greece and eternal doom all in the same sentence.

However she admits that Brexit was a shock and will be a disaster for the farming industry. Interestingly she said highland farmers were leavers, Devon framers were remain and Shropshire farmers also leavers.

I did try to explain the debt rubbish and explained a few things they didn’t know about how the Barnet works. Apparently the NHS in Shropshire is in dire straights. She seemed to think 56 SNP MPs should be doing more but I told her about all the amendments that were voted down including FFA because they will always be outnumbered by rUK MPs.

I will send her my Wee Blue book and see if she can be persuaded so she can persuade her family in turn. I got the impression they were now very soft Nos after Brexit.

Can anyone point me to a gdod article that explains how we will not be Greece like…i bet Wings has one but i can’t find it. Thanks

Many people hate twitter, some don’t go near it. I find it usuful for up to date info on what’s going on, politically, scientifically and environmentally. I can see why people avoid it though

Regards these timewasters, it is all pathetic, and these people are being paid to play the prima donna. They really are quite dull, but they confirm the unionists agenda to demonise the people of Scotland who would quite like to make our own grown decisions, and not be bullied by our big nasty neighbours. God these people are making a good living out of Scottish independence aren’t they, whatever will they do when it really does happen.

I wonder if that C.Huechans would be a real feminist when the chips are down. Real feminists that I knew in the 80s, spent their weekends at Greenham common, being arrested lots by some not very nice or polite policemen, and then in and out of court, after trying to stop the Nukes. It wasn’t for attention or effect, but for the good of all.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it Huechans, why not get yourself to Faslane to protest the nukes, or join Greenpeace, just do something worthwhile for humanity’s sake, pleeeese.

Not so happy days for the self-employed courtesy of the budget. After so much trumpeting from the Ruth Harrison party about Holyrood’s failure to pass on the higher 40% allowance, just how are they going to sell a tax grab to their own, self employed supporters.

The tax increases about to be passed on are eye watering, but not before time to be fair. The tax being legally dodged by some sole traders and small business owners was obscene.

Hugely OT, but it looks like The Donald and his policy regarding Visas has cost New York a few $ this year. Courtesy of a year working in Iraq, I now have to apply for a Visa in person at the nearest consulate. So much for my visiting Rekyavic on the way back. Perhaps Greece will be more welcoming of our money this year.

Thank you Nana for all the links you provide… the Ben Griffin video should be compulsory viewing for our young people in particular.I was also heartened to read about the Scottish Govt’s efforts to set up a business hub in Berlin and foster our links with our European friends and allies.See how the German government responded to Fukushima…100,000 Germans immediately took to the streets in Berlin and forced their Chancellor to stop, on the spot, all reliance on nuclear energy.

This quote from Joanna Macy ( a Buddhist scholar and environmental activist ) ” The most radical thing any of us can do at this time is to be fully present to what is happening in the world ” reminds me of how important Nana’s efforts are in keeping us informed and awake and vigilant as we fight like we’ve never fought before for our freedom.

The Tories are borrowing £100Billion a year. Spending it in the rest of the UK. Scotland has to pay loan repayments. They are borrowing £500Billion for HS2, Hinkley Point, Heathrow and Trident. All a total waste of money with more credible alternatives.

The EU costs Scotland nothing but brings benefits. Investment and renewable Grants. Westminster takes extra CAP payments given to Scotland. Scotland as part of the UK receives the lowest CAP farming payments in the EU. The Union costs Scotland £20Billion a year.

Somebody should maybe have a word with Vonny Moyes at the National, who was putting out a sob-story for her in her column a couple of days ago. While she didn’t mention her by name, she said it was a friend who was apparently “chased” off Twitter by misogynistic bullying after she wrote a piece in the Guarding that was critical of the independence movement. It doesn’t take a genius to work out it’s the same person. It put my back up for the whole of her piece, and regardless of whatever else she might have had to say, I instantly regarded it from the outset with suspicion, so she lost it for me.

You never know. I used to have my own repellent I put together with fresh bog myrtle and other herbs, it really started going well, abroad as well, but the EU put a slow stop to that with its expensive registration I couldn’t afford though trading standards kept me going for a few years longer, little changes to wording, that sort of thing. And in spite of that I voted Remain. For the wife, kids and Scotland, not me so much.

I brought up the Heuchan flounce with a work colleague last evening. She is an EU citizen studying at Stirling University, and has experienced this person at first hand. The way she described Ms Heuchan is as a complete Millie Tant figure, blaming all and sundry for the plight of the poor downtrodden sisterhood, although she isn’t long tearing into ladies who take care of their oxters and such, as they are “just pandering to the male expectations of women”. A thoroughly nasty piece of work apparently.

I know. She’s bitter about something. A few friends I have are feminists (circa 1970’s/80’s!) but are fun loving, happy, inclusive people who care first and foremost about gender and structural inequalities, peace and nuclear disarmament. And they shave their legs 🙂 some are married or living with partners. If that is their take on feminism, then fine!

I remain perplexed at giving yourself a handle or description – as she has: ‘black, radical, feminist’. This, in my opinion is divisive and goes against what feminism is about. Why feel the need to do this? But, each to their own.

How sad it’s all got very anti-men with the patriarchy to blame for everything, causing some feminist thinkers to rethink their belief systems.

You are right. Lots of hugs needed. Hugs by the dozen.
