The angry saboteurs
There are three separate articles in today’s Sunday Times on the same subject, all containing the same information, of which the below is the most concise.
So let’s recap the events, shall we?
1. In March, the Scottish Government signed a “memorandum of understanding” with some Chinese companies to discuss potential investment by the companies in Scotland, possibly worth up to £10bn. A press release was issued by one of the companies and the apparent good-news story was covered – reluctantly and (natch) slightly inaccurately – in the Scottish press.
2. In April the Unionist parties and the rest of the media noticed the agreement and whipped up a storm of shrill fury about the “secrecy” involved and the vague unsuitability of one of the Chinese firms.
The outrage went on for days, weeks and months, with all sorts of different reasons given as to why Scots should be scandalised that their government was attempting to attract foreign investment and jobs. The Times’ reporter/columnist (it’s so hard to tell these days) Michael Glackin was prominent in the fury.
3. It’s now been revealed that the “political fallout” – that is, the reaction from the media and the opposition parties – has in fact scuppered the deal, with the Chinese understandably not wanting to be caught up in the toxic crossfire of such extraordinary hostility towards the SNP.
4. The people responsible for losing Scotland up to £10bn are now howling at the Scottish Government over the deal’s collapse, and the fact that it didn’t shout about that collapse from the rooftops, even though there was no actual “deal” to collapse in the first place. The Chinese had merely agreed to discuss one, then ran away in horror as Labour, the Tories and the Times descended upon them like screeching harpies from Hades.
Glackin, having almost certainly done more than any other individual to sink the agreement and wreak serious harm on Scotland’s economy, then had the brass neck to pen a mind-bogglingly enraged piece about the SNP’s ineptitude.
It concludes with paragraphs which plainly acknowledge that the chief culprit in the “debacle” was Glackin himself (along with his hack colleagues and opposition MSPs), yet still summons the chutzpah to thunder that it “marks a new nadir in [the SNP’s] abysmal decade in power”, and is “a national disgrace”.
Those two comments are, of course, probably true, just not in the way that Michael Glackin appears to think. It’s been clear for a long time that the opposition parties and the Unionist media are more than happy to damage Scotland in their neverending quest to attack the SNP. It’s a little surprising to see them this angry on one of the few occasions when it’s actually worked.
How can people like Michael Glackin and company be happy and content, both professionally and personally, acting in this manner? Does this really make them feel worthwhile?

Their mission is to destroy the SNP. If Scotland suffers casualties in commerce or justice along the way, then they view that as a price worth paying to establish the “old order”.
They are Scottish by accident of birth but give allegiance first and foremost to the British State. They profess to wanting the best for Scotland but put every other aspect ahead of that expressed wish. Their focus is on anything which holds Scotland back and keeps it tied to the British State. Football, religion. political parties are just some of the tentacles on these beasties.
They have served so long they have no concept of what it is to be free. Their obligation and their loyalty is to a bigger State.
We gave fought through that imprisonment whilst they dutifully serve.
A day of reckoning will come though.

Obviously this was bad, because foreign investment is no good unless a) it goes to the South East of England, b) it is brokered by Westminster, or c) both a) and b).

I suspect it is far more likely that the UK Foreign Office clandestinely became involved after Brexit and advised China that they would look on it very favourably if China simply dropped the Jocks’ deal, in preference over Hinkley & other English commercial interests.
Well, that’s the whole point of it, to keep Scotland weak, and divided.

A few weeks ago it was a diatribe of lies about the Scottish NHS, but this is something exceptional even for him. Even Gillian Bowditch, no friend of the SNP, seems a voice of reason in comparison.

Eyes on the prize people. What kind of trade deal is represented by Scotland staying in the EU?
I don’t mean it in a xenophobic way, but the Brits best beware that the biggest commodity they will be exporting to the Chinese is U.K. wealth. Look at Rover. I was in Beijing the year before the Olympics, and it’s a remarkable place. For example, you could by a Toyota Landcruiser for about the same as you would pay in the U.K., or you could buy the Chinese version, which looked like a Landcruiser, performed like a Landcruiser, quacked like a Landcruiser, and in every capacity apart from its badge, was a Landcruiser, but it cost about a quarter the price.
Scotland should be satisfied with Europe, and the protection we have for our branded goods protected by trade treaties which the Westminster government wants torn up.
I liked the Chinese people. They are a clever and resourceful people, and back then modernising their country at breakneck speed. But given the choice, I would plant my feet in Europe and sell Scotch Whisky to anyone, rather than have a trade deal with the Chinese and before I know it see Chinese Whisky being imported into the U.K. That isn’t a dig at the Chinese by the way, far from it, but Scotland will be in the driving seat with European deals because we’ll be sovereign, whereas any deal with the UK is essentially a deal by proxy, and we know how expendable Scottish Industry becomes at a U.K. Level.

I think you have it correct, the Chinese would not be bothered about western media being a bit nasty about them. Some faction of UKok has had a hand in this. They are criminals, who will lay waste to Scotland, while keeping their iron grip on our resources.
They want Scotland kept as poor as possible, to undermine any progress being made by the SNP government. It is also orchestrated to keep Scotland shackled, begging bowl in hand, and keeping full control of their resource rich, minimally devolved neighbour.
I guess in places like south America they just kill off the left leaning, indigenous party leaders and activists, and pay the security services handsomely for oppressing anyone who attempts to retain any autonomy in their own country.
Here, they are using a slightly different tactic, strangling the country by keeping control of the purse strings and destroying industry, as well as blocking any new investment, then blaming the party in power in Scotland, the SNP. Win win for the unionists, and their pals abroad.
As ever Scotland operates with both hands tied behind her back.

The yoons seem to be embarking on a scorched earth policy. If they cant hold on to one of the most productive parts of their UK, they sure as hell will try to ensure that nobody else benefits. They may even manage to wreck Scotland so much that a YES vote becomes nigh impossible to achieve in the short term.
IMO they plan to asset strip and then abandon Scotland. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of oil under the sea bed, the “scotch” whisky label is not transferrable, and the wind does not want to move south.
And so they hang on to us, with all the power they can muster.
Of course Labour and the Tories both want to impoverish Scotland for their own political ends. Labour has never been and never will be in the business of making Scotland prosperous because it cuts thro’ their ideology that only they can protect us from those nasty Tories and of course the Tories in turn want the status quo and certainly do not want the Scots to get any whiff of self determination. The sad reality many middle class and dare I say it elderly Scots are still oblivious to it all as they readily consume this crap as their only source of information.
The britnat media continues to denigrate Scotland. Don’t buy these britnat rags. Don’t visit their websites. Let the Rev do the business in his usual forensic way.

Torcuil and chums are a great deal more than this. Its Torcuil and chums that cooked up the great The Vow fraud on Scotland.
You can argue all day just how much of an influence their The Vow fraud actually had on the course of Scottish democracy, Scottish histroy, UK history and ofcourse the DR’s rapidly buried it. But Torcuil is a very significant figure, in Scotland and our road to self rule, or not, pending the publication of Torcuil and chums, The Vow 2.

For the most part the good people of the YES movement and beyond have waged a war of words humour and sarcasm to fight the good fight and for the most part were it a boxing match we’d be well ahead on points and a dead cert for a win barring a knockout
But we have a couple of problems inasmuch as the referee the judges the promoter and the TV company have fixed the fight so our opponent wins no matter what we do

Last time I looked, the UK State Pension stood at £119.30, give or take, the 6th worst in Europe.
WE can’t afford a decent retirement for the ‘hard working elderly’ but we can buy 600 useless tanks from the US Industrial and Military Complex, at £3.5 billion, spend £160 billion on Trident, and Pay the French and Chinese through the nose to build a new nuclear power station (time bomb) Down There.

None of this changes my opinion though in that it would cease to have any relevance in an Independent Scotland. It’s not an asset at all and is fully funded by a levy on the Oil Companies with assets in the UK sector of the North Sea. It can’t make a profit so is worthless. Since the Memorandum of Understanding was cancelled after the Westminster government halted the Hinkley Point contract, it is clearly the Westminster government that is the greatest threat to the Scottish economy. Surely these hacks can see that.
I agree with the article BUT. The ScotGov said once it all flared up that they did fairly limitied “due diligence” for the MoU, as it was a commitment only to exchange information, not a deal involving actual transfer of money.
They also said that actual deals would of course be subject to due diligence.
If the Chinese companies are getting cold feet, perhaps that’s why.

There was a time when I thought it was time and money well spent to go to London to hear his Keynote speech to the Secular Society.
Except it turned out that when there was a good chance of a Secular government/Constution on these islands he not only didn’t at that time have the courage of his convictions,and put his weight behind it,he signed up to keep Scotland in a regime that has very little chance of getting rid of the malign influence of religion in his or his grandchildrens life time.
If he has had a change of heart that’s very welcome

Aye! Gus, but that’ll be a bit like calling, “Glaikit and his fellow journalists”, a bit like, “Pullers of agricultural equipment”.
The Chinese withdrawal from this may have more to do with China’s own economic situation and their talk of nasty press coverage etc is a convenient excuse for them.
Apparently some bad economic news about China’s reserves is expected tomorrow and is likely to result in some economic belt-tightening.
Another possible reason for them going cold on pursuing the possibility ofa deal was that the MOU made it clear that any agreement had to meet Scots Law and EU law. The Chinese wanted to use their own model which was one of the reasons why the SG intervened in the discussions between the Chinese and Falkirk Council who were likely to accept the Chinese terms rather than ensure they met domestic and EU law.
We seem to have reached a situation in Scotland where a great many are reduced to relying on the scraps doled out from the Westminster table.
We are supposed to be so grateful for anything they can spare, we are accepting of crumbs instead of demanding our fair share of the cake.
There are now at least 50% of us who are off our knees and believe that Scotland has a better future without relying on their largesse, yes we have a bit further to go and more people to persuade though I do believe we are slowly getting there.
We don’t need scraps from Westminster or China, all Scotland needs is the power to control her own destiny. That means Independence.
Someday, sometime soon, we will have enough of us that see that.

However the public are examining the state of the other parties, that’s why we threw out Scottish Labour MPs from Westminster and Slab in Holyrood.
That’s why, for all the Tory trumpeting, they have only 7 directly elected MSPs. Labour have 4, with 17 rejected at GE.
Britain is Scotland’s past. Europe is Scotland’s future. There is no in-between.
I voted REMAIN, Nicola, as 62% of this country. That is to Remain in the EU with all its benefits and safeguards. No backsliding, Nicola.
To be fair the new Oil and Gas Authority is “headquartered” in Aberdeen (but naturally must also have a plush office presence in London).

My concern was that it would be used to raise revenue as a ‘company’ with ‘tax payer’ assets and eventually sold off to the highest bidder (probably the Chinese with the profits going to No.11 Downing St. (and into Tory boy pockets) at the expense of the country.

Congratulations to Ireland for a well-deserved victory over the All Blacks. They came close a (very) few times before, but this is their first success against NZ in 111 years. 🙂
You can find good and bad in every people, but many Chinese have a deep mistrust of Europeans, and call us white ghosts in a derogatory kind of way, much the same as we might call them Chinks. They are also deeply resentful of the Japanese due to their conduct in Manchuria. Where the UK has lots of propaganda films about plucky British stiff upper lip beating the Germans, so the Chinese have films about the Japanese. They are also well indoctrinated into the love of their country by their own media, with much of the entertainment coming from military bands from the services or police. It sounds like the stereotypical communist propaganda, but it isn’t so very different from the UK propaganda from Ice Cold in Alex to the Military Tattoos.
The Chinese however do have a very small soft spot for Scotland, and its thanks to Scotland’s gold medal Olympic runner, Eric Liddell, made famous in the Chariots of Fire film. A devout Christian, Liddell turned his back of fame and celebrity to work as a missionary in China, and stood by the Chinese when Japanese invaded when he could easily have abandoned them and kept himself safe. He was interned in a Japanese internment camp with the Chinese, but worked extraordinarily hard at keeping the camp healthy and decent morale in very difficult circumstances. By all accounts Mr Liddell was a fine gentleman of indefatigable character, and was held in the highest regard by those who knew him. The Chinese children he taught called him uncle Eric. Sadly, Eric Liddell did not survive internment, but died of a brain tumour exacerbated by deprivations and overwork of his circumstances leaving a desperate gap but an honourable legacy in the camp.
The bottom line is the Chinese have good reason to mistrust the Europeans, especially the colonial British, but through Eric Liddell who stood by them in dire adversity, they also know we are not all the proverbial bad guys.
I’ve said it before, but trading with China is a double edged sword, and it is very likely the biggest U.K. export to China will be UK wealth and technology. The days when Britain could exploit underdeveloped countries for their resources are long gone. Don’t forget the resourceful Chinese can run communism at a profit, and have no fear of a small faraway nation of shopkeepers. They will see through the bullshit, and know very well that China is a superpower Sitting in the driving seat.
China will respect Scotland when Scotland respects itself and stands for its own independence.

Remove fats and refined sugars from the diet and feed live yoghurt. This should cure the problem within a couple of weeks, and the stench should decrease within a day or two. If he doesn’t much enjoy yoghurt, mix it with something like sardines – although they are oily fish, they don’t seem to interfere but remove excess oil or brine first and don’t give the tomato sauce plastered fish.
Ex-racing greyhounds often suffer the gas problem when they enter foster or adoptive homes and this is a tried and tested cure for them.
This works for humans also, although I wouldn’t suggest a diet of kibble 😉

My great aunt who was the daughter of the Dutch ambassador during the war in the Far East advised never to take a favour from the Chinese. Apparently they do not do favours. They will at some point ask for a return of the service they gave to you whether it be one or twenty years ago. Inscrutable right enough.
She and her family spent all their life in the Orient and I have no reason to disbelieve her.

I notice a lot of commentators regard this as a special deal between China and Scotland, however that was just the teeniest piece of the overall commercial expansionist planning of the Chinese government, wishing to invest in Europe under their “One Belt One Road” strategy.

Worth restating that the Scottish Government stated the memorandum “is intended as a statement of intent and a platform to share confidential information, not a binding legal agreement”. whereas Westminster has signed a legal binding agreement for billions of investment.

Another salient point is the Chinese are pretty adept at looking at other countries emails and secret communications, Mrs May hasn’t sole patent on that technology. So it is indeed ironic that Europe in particular has welcomed the Chinese largess with open arms, especially in the wake of the global financial crisis and sluggish euro zone economic growth. Had I been involved in any “Heads of Agreement” with another company, then found those discussions supposedly confidential were being openly discussed by “Other Interested Parties” in such a way as to maximise any damage to either the agreement or subsequent contracts, a curt missive informing the other company to take a hike would land in their in tray faster than Ruth Davidson can mount a beast.
My Final point regards the actual instrument used by the Chinese government, that is the Railway company 3, it is a part of the Chinese government, think of it like a window cleaner, to keep it simple, getting an order from the Tax office to clean the windows, you can’t say you won’t take the order from the pensions office on the grounds that you dislike the Conservative Government of Mrs May, but that is the ridiculous argument put forward by the opponents of this MOU. They would destroy Scotland rather than say well done Scottish government officials who brokered the deal, incidentally the same officials who would do so regardless of the party in office. As have the civil service officials in Westminster when they brokered the actual Chinese investment deals worth 10 times what the MOU proposed.

LOL. Well, since you’re somewhat more polite than my dismissive “Glad to help”, I’m kind of duty bound to try to give a more detailed attempt at explanation.
The MoU was signed 21st March, Holyrood dissolved 24th March, but the election period purdah started at midnight on 23 March 2016. After that time no official government policy is supposed to be announced, or it breaks purdah.
So the only time the MoU could have been announced to Parliament was the 22nd or 23rd March.
But that “gagging clause” could arguably be restrictive on the Scottish Government so soon – within 2 days – of the actual signing, as the Chinese parties might want to announce it to their shareholders etc. That would be a genuine reason for not making a public announcement, even to parliament, over those 2 days.
Very shortly after CR3 “leaked” the information and the row blew up. Some would say grossly overdone with a total lack of discretion or care about the potential £10 billion investment, by the opposition and the anti-SNP press. I’d be one!
May saying “UK & India have signed a new ‘Program of Cooperation'”.

Whether it be by design or for the duel purposes of, political expediency or just plain old political propaganda these educators have failed to teach the Hoi Polloi their own native language. Most of them now do actually speak English like a native – That is a Native of the Planet Zog.
The present furore drummed up by the totally ignorant Main-Stream Media is only the latest in a long line of English Language idiocies that expose those who hilariously claim to be Journalists but who, in reality, could hardly even be regarded as cub-reporters who make no attempt to even properly report any news whatsoever.
The present drummed up idiocy is that the Scottish Government’s agreement with the Chinese was anything more than a, “Memorandum of Understanding”, that in no way could be reasonably considered as a, “Deal”, “Contract”, or, “Treaty”, of any sort.
The thing is that these people are speaking, writing and reading a language that bears only a passing resemblance to the actual English language in that it uses, more or less, English Language words and roughly English Language Grammar and punctuation.
The problem is that their language not only invents semi-pseudo-English, i.e. “Brexit”, that not only makes the idiotic error that all, “Britain”, and not only, “The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland”, is intending to leave the EU but it misinterprets actual English Language words.
Whether this be by design, intent to mislead. of just pure ignorance I must leave up to Wingers to decide for themselves.
Let us consider the more obvious examples.
They speak of, “Britain”, but interpret that as being only, “The United Kingdom of Britain & Northern Ireland”, part of Britain.
They then compound that error by the liberal use of the geographic term, “Great Britain”, to also mean either, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, and, “The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. Then, to confuse the matter even further, they interpret the term, “Kingdom”, as being synonymous with their other misunderstood terms and compound that by also interpreting any of the former terms with, “The Country”, “The Whole Country”, and, believe it or not, even equating all the previous misinterpretations with, “England”, (Whether that be, “England”, the country, or, “England”, the kingdom is never made clear.

“(Bloomberg) – Oil producers in the North Sea, home to one of the world’s key crude-price benchmarks, are poised to ship the most crude in more than four years. The surge takes place just as OPEC tries to contain a global surplus with coordinated output cuts.
Shipments of North Sea grades will increase 10 percent month-on-month to about 2.16 million barrels a day in December, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. If all the cargoes load as planned it would mark the most crude oil shipments from the region since May 2012. The increase just from September, when there was field maintenance, would be almost 360,000 barrels a day.”

Why do I get the sneaking suspicion that 30 years from now we’ll be reading a McCrone type report of how Chinese investment in Scotland was considered to be a threat to U.K. stability and likely to swing Scotland towards Independence unless Westminster intervened?
This is the first time I have ever seen the Chinese back away from any commercial opportunity, and frankly, something stinks.
However, we should not be complacent. I have commented before about Scotland’s primitive attitude towards business, which really needs to be shaken up. If the Chinese were engaged by the “exemplary” duffers at Scottish Enterprise, then in all honesty I’m really not surprised they backed off. Perhaps the shambolic cap fits.
The Tories are taxing the Oil & Gas sector at 40%. Losing thousands of jobs and £Billions. Untaxed, fracked Gas and Oil is being imported. They have banned wind turbines in England. Stopped coal production in the UK. Refused permission for CCS. Reneged on promises. Cut investment in renewables, They are wasting £Billions of (borrowed) money on Hinkley Point and HS2 without a credible business case when there are cheaper more reliable alternatives. They are flying nuclear waste around the world. Cutting NHS/Education funding. Cutting taxes for the wealthiest and sanctioning the vulnerable. The UK is the most unequal place in the world. The Tories do not have a mandate in Scotland. Scotland as part of the UK receives the lowest CAP payments in the EU. The EU gave Scotland extra payments. Westminster took it.
Westminster/Unionists have caused the migration crisis in Europe. Bombing the Middle East. Illegal wars, banking fraud and tax evasion. The farce of May going to India arguing about 1,000 Indian students. There are twice as many US students are they being blocked from studying. Giving Oxbridge, Bath and Imperial London preferential student visa permission.

A key source here is the annual Ernst & Young UK Attractiveness Survey: this provides data on performance in attracting Foreign Direct Investment. The most recent data are for 2015 (http://www.ey.com/Publication/vwLUAssets/2016_Scotland_Attractiveness_Survey/$FILE/EY-Scotland-Attractiveness-Survey-2016.pdf). The EY report notes for 2015:
“… Scotland enjoying its best year on record.”
“EY’s Global Investment Monitor (GIM) on FDI projects into Scotland in 2015 reveals that the number of inward investments into Scotland surged by more than half over the previous year. This confirms that the ability of the Scottish economy to attract and secure cross-border investments remains both strong and growing.”
“… Scotland outpaced the rate of growth at a UK level, enabling it to increase its share of all UK FDI projects from 9% to 11%.”
The UK report confirms Scotland’s performance lags only behind London’s. In general therefore, Scotland’s dealings over FDI are evidently very far from being a ‘shambles’.
On the likely significance of Brexit, the EY report states (note: the report pre-dated the referendum):
“When asked about how either a significant or substantial decline in the terms of access to the ESM (European Single Market) would impact the UK’s attractiveness, over 50% of investors in both cases said it would have a negative effect whereas only 7% viewed it positively. It seems clear therefore that a risk of change in the terms of access to the ESM is a significant concern for investors.”
And “Interestingly, the degree of change is less important, any reduction in the terms of access currently enjoyed has a significant negative impact on perceptions of the UK’s attractiveness for FDI, which suggest this is a very important issue for the majority of investors.”
