The whole COVID 19 emergency has been stage managed from a long time back. Our government and that of the US knew fine well what was happening in China.
The statisticians and epidemiologists understood what was happening, how it could spread, how it could be contained. The economists also understood its impacts. China’s outbreak was therefore used by the US, as it is again with the EU, as an opportunity to wage economic war and gain economic advantage.
And so with the economic interests of the US and UK having been assessed as being greater than an outbreak of Coronavirus, here in the UK, and only a month ago HM Government were putting public safety notices in Scottish and U.K. newspapers to say that they had everything under control and all that people had to do was sneeze into a hankie to be thereafter binned.
With no other controls or advice in place the community carried on working as normal.
But a mere month later how the HM Government message has changed. Now the message is that community infection is a good thing. That people will just have to accept the loss of loved ones before their time, with belatedly, controls that should have been introduced before butvwhich were sacrificed to economic advantage.
Johnson may be the absolute right wing poodle of Trump and his ilk but between them their wanto disregard for proper health controls may be absolute ruin of both countries – and especially the US where there is no public health system.
Shutting off all US flights to the remaining 29 EU nations but not GB might be an act of economic warfare but it might close off Europe to two of the biggest disease ridden countries yet to emerge.
Indeed, it might well be that the EU will have to consider closing its border with the UK.
As for our populace who have been fed a diet of misinformation as our government played economic roulette we will just have to hope and pray that the deaths arising from the ‘ intentional ‘ infection will not be us, our friends, our our relatives.
A hundred years on from 1918 this could be another big slaughter of the old and infirm. Our glorious dead even.

I’ll give you credit that you don’t actually mean that.
A few years ago I was walking my dogs and got talking with this old fella about dogs. He’d bred and trained dogs all his life, and had my pair of tearaways sat in front of him spellbound, giving him their complete attention. We sat blathering for about an hour which felt like about minute. He’d been a working man, never wealthy, but he told me of hay stacks before there were bailers or tractors, of his experience being one of the last people to ford a river with a horse and cart, and then described something of his life in forestry before there were chainsaws and you used an axe. He’d made paints to blacken houses using linseed oil and lampblack. His knowledge of local geography and ‘how things used to be” was detailed and fascinating and he knew what obscure things had actually been and the purpose to which they were put. He was also an ex-serviceman with either a friend or a relative (my memory is worse than his), losing a leg on a ship serving in the Dardanelles by Gallipoli.
The old fella is gone now, but in this world of greed, sleaze, and cynicism, we forget that some people are great ambassadors for the human race, but they get old like the rest of us. So don’t be hasty wishing them aw deid.
As a lowland Scot, I have also had the great pleasure to meet an old Gael, for whom English was her second language and she needed a friend to translate. At the time, I didn’t even know there actually were such people. Nowadays, maybe there aren’t. I felt very embarrassed that she welcomed myself, and others, into her home which was, how can I put it kindly, ‘not of this century’. Why was I embarrassed? Because I didn’t have so much as a halò or tapadh leibh in Gàidhlig. I have shaken the hand of an elderly lady who knew first hand the way things had been in the old days, a time in Scotland that fascinates me, but I learned not one thing about it because I didn’t have the Gaelic. I can go back to the place where she was, but she’s gone and gone forever.
When these people go to their graves, a link is broken between the way things were and the way they are now. A lot of things are better nowadays, hardships are much less severe, and life then seems as though it was pretty cheap and easily extinguished, but they could feed themselves and be merry given nothing but a shoreline, and still raise armies to fight for their invaders, whereas our society crumbles in despair when the shops run out of bog roll.
It’s not that I’m a soft person, but my eyes see a Scotland as the British Unionists on our TV’s and radios want it to be seen… Docile. Compliant. Subdued. Generous to their cause and preaching British doctrines as if they were our own. Anglicised.
Will Scotland ever again have Hebridean Islands and communities where English isn’t their first language? I suspect not. But funny enough, I’m reading R.L.Stevenson’s Kidnapped… fiction I know, but nevertheless written in 1886, the book casually in passing describes Appin and Ballachulish as places where the Gaelic language predominated and English was frequently unknown. My old Highland lady, who was 98 if I remember correctly, might even have a sibling who’d been born…
So the dramatic changes in the Highlands are both more profound than many would think, and more recent. Much of it is easily within living memory, or living memory plus one… and Gàidhlig needs a lifeline and support to survive.. Mull is crying out for people… and it’s an unspoken question whether they’ll even be Scots, nevermind Gaels who take up the option.

The remainder of the Scottish football season has been postponed indefinitely over fears about the coronavirus, the SPFL has confirmed.

At a time of need for collaboration and cooperation in the face of Covid-19, Johnson continues snobbishly to maintain the English Class System to the entire benefit of The Establishment and the contemptuous neglect of 99% of the population.
As he did with the recent floods, Johnson brings the same distanced approach to the Coronavirus epidemic. And still his 17 million supporters cultishly believe in his cause to turn back the clock of Empire by recreating a society defined by extremes of wealth and poverty, of power and powerlessness, of oppression for the poor and lawlessness and corruption for the self-appointed elites.
The Covid-19 epidemic is going to bring out the worst in the Establishment. And it will be ugly.
As a matter of increasing urgency, Scotland must resolve to become independent.

It is funded by taxation and is free at the point of use.

Good article. Good timing. The challenge is on with a max of 5 years until the next Yes chance if we are voted out of Europe. After being voted out the popular opinion will swell for another independence referendum, but it will be opposed both in the parliament and in Westminster to begin with. Holyrood will then begin to demand it and the longer Westminster oppose it, the greater the Yes support will grow. Another Tory government will be voted in to London prior to Scottish elections and unless we are “permitted” to hold another referendum the Scottish election will return a massive majority for the swift Yes vote. I just saw all that in the bottom of my tea cup.

That will be so Johnson gets people back to work,,,that solves the benefits problem and it also spreads the virus quicker because people are returning to work too quickly

The reason why Corona Virus and SARS Virus started in China, is that China started to encourage the farming of wildlife to feed its population, and the trade of food stuffs in China is through wet markets where living animals are stacked in cages and piss and shit on each other. It’s grim, heart breaking stuff.
The poor beasties are often slaughtered on site, and this combination of factors and appalling hygiene has introduced new wildlife based viruses to augment the viruses from ordinary livestock. Viruses which originate in exotic species are coming into close contact with the human food chain, and the human immune system has never seen anything like it, and has no immunity.
It said the DNA of Corona virus has its origins in bats and pangolins of all things… which are considered food in these Chinese markets. It’s kinda like a horror story about chlorinated chicken without the chlorination, and exotic wild animals instead of chicken.
It’s a stretch to call it a natural phenomenon… although it could be Mother Nature fking with the Chinese for taking liberties with wild animals. There’s a certain irony about the crazy demands of Chinese medicine giving rise to global pandemics.
Interesting too, the program I watched said the Chinese poor didn’t eat the weird stuff, it was the wealthy, with a taste for the exotic.

Here in Scotland English news precedes Scottish news on the BBC, and on the likes of Sky Scottish news is not even an after thought unless something big or calamitous occurs. Why Scots put up with being second class citizens in a union designed to keep them that way is a mystery.
Fast forward to Johnson stupidly blurting out on the English news that loved ones will die, and ergo causing panic and fear in the process among the already jittery public is an absolute disgrace. This poor excuse of a human being would’ve caused less stress, less fear and less crazy panic buying, if he’d have walked into a cinema and shouted out fire.
As for back home in Scotland already we see a divergence in tactics on how to handle the virus between Scotland and England. Long may this and other divergents continue.
Johnsons hatred of foreigners has seen Scotland miss out on vital information in the virus from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Sturgeon doesn’t have her troubles to seek what with the foolish GRA and false promises over a second indyref, however we need her to handle this difficult situation well, and so far she has by not sitting back and waiting to see what Englands government are doing.

Just tell them, politely but firmly, what you think of the proposals to do away with medical oversight, shorten the waiting period to 6 months and reduce the minimum age to 16. Or you can even question the absurdity of the notion that it is possible to change sex.
You can also comment on what you think of the bill in general and what you think of their equality impact assessment. For those you may want to read through the advice on For Women Scotland and Women and Girls Scotland websites.

Excellencies, dear colleagues and friends,
First of all, I would like to say good morning.
As you know, yesterday I said that that the global COVID-19 outbreak can now be described as a pandemic.
This is not a decision we took lightly.
We have made this assessment for two main reasons: first, because of the speed and scale of transmission.
Almost 125,000 cases have now been reported to WHO, from 118 countries and territories. In the past two weeks, the number of cases reported outside China has increased almost 13-fold, and the number of affected countries has almost tripled.
The second reason is that despite our frequent warnings, we are deeply concerned that some countries are not approaching this threat with the level of political commitment needed to control it.
Let me be clear: describing this as a pandemic does not mean that countries should give up. The idea that countries should shift from containment to mitigation is wrong and dangerous.
On the contrary, we have to double down.
This is a controllable pandemic. Countries that decide to give up on fundamental public health measures may end up with a larger problem, and a heavier burden on the health system that requires more severe measures to control.
All countries must strike a fine balance between protecting health, preventing economic and social disruption, and respecting human rights.
We urge all countries to take a comprehensive approach tailored to their circumstances – with containment as the central pillar.
We are calling on countries to take a four-pronged strategy:
First, prepare and be ready.
There are still 77 countries and territories with no reported cases, and 55 countries and territories that have reported 10 cases or less.
And all countries with cases have unaffected areas. You have an opportunity to keep it that way. Prepare your people and your health facilities.
Second, detect, prevent and treat.
You can’t fight a virus if you don’t know where it is. That means robust surveillance to find, isolate, test and treat every case, to break the chains of transmission.
Third, reduce and suppress.
To save lives we must reduce transmission. That means finding and isolating as many cases as possible, and quarantining their closest contacts. Even if you cannot stop transmission, you can slow it down and protect health facilities, old age homes and other vital areas – but only if you test all suspected cases.
And fourth, innovate and improve.
This is a new virus and a new situation. We’re all learning and we must all find new ways to prevent infections, save lives, and minimize impact. All countries have lessons to share.
WHO is working day and night to support all countries.
We have shipped supplies of personal protective equipment to 57 countries, we’re preparing to ship to a further 28, and we’ve shipped lab supplies to 120 countries.
We’ve published an R&D roadmap, with a set of core protocols for how studies should be done.
We’ve published a comprehensive package of technical guidance.
We’ve had more than 176,000 enrollments in our COVID training courses on OpenWHO.
We’re working with the World Economic Forum and the International Chambers of Commerce to engage the private sector. We’re also working with FIFA.
We’re working with our colleagues across the UN system to support countries to develop their preparedness and response plans, according to the 8 pillars.
And more than 440 million U.S. dollars has now been pledged to WHO’s Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan
We thank those countries that have contributed, especially those that have contributed fully flexible funds. Because this is a dynamic situation, we need the greatest flexibility possible to provide the best support possible. In the spirit of solidarity, we ask countries not to earmark funds for this response.

Hello Breeks at 5.13 pm. I think and certainly hope that you are right about this … It could well be that we are on the brink of an implosion in SNP hq which, in the end (and actually very soon, once the initial mess is cleared up) will be very good for the independence movement.
Even the trial – whatever the outcome – might well backfire badly on those who hoped (not to say planned or plotted or dreamed) that it would damage the cause for ever, or put it back for a generation. Even if they seem to gain an initial hit, the rebound could hit them very hard indeed.
I also agreed with the comments I read on the twitter thread you posted at 5.13, Breeks. The ones I read were to the effect that this attempt to change the rules governing the selection process for Holyrood is a sign of woke-panic, that any SNP member is and should be able to put themselves forward to their local constituency as a possible candidate, that selection should be locally based and noty be manipulated by the National Executive, and – the most important point of all – that we need the best of the SNP’s Westminster MPs back at Holyrood as fast as possible, so that they can make a real difference).
To which I would add that any change of selection rules at this late stage, in order to gerrymander a result in one (or several) particular instance(s), would be derisory. It would only bring the SNP, and its higher echelons, into even further disrepute.
The general public – including ordinary SNP members and voters – are not daft. They will see through any such attempts at keeping outstanding politicians like Joanna Cherry out of Holyrood a mile away. And they will surely greet any such attempts with the scorn and contempt they deserve.
Angus Robertson putting his hat in the ring in West Lothian after Joanna had put her name forward already forewarned of something like this. If he doesn’t very quickly distance himself completely from those trying to prevent Joanna from entering the fray, as at present she has every right to do, he will surely do himself an enormous amount of damage.
All this will rightly be perceived as the worst kind of ad hominum politics. Perpetrated, moreover, against someone who is deservedly popular among the ordinary SNP membership and within the Yes movement generally. Beside being one of the sharpest minds in the SNP’s armoury. Trying to formulate obviously concocted and convoluted ‘principles’, and retrospectively inserting them into the rules for selection as a candidate for Holyrood, in order to thwart the rise of talented and committed individuals who have the true purposes of the Party to heart, is derisory. It is also typical of all the worst kind of politics everywhere.
If Nicola S supports such moves, or stands idly by and lets them happen, she really will (yet again?) shoot herself in the foot (if there is still enough left of that foot to shoot at). I don’t honestly think she will – not unless she really has lost it.
On another purely speculative point, I have often wondered if her apparent rush to get the GRA legislation through was connected to her imagining that the trial might well bring her ‘reign’as leader and First Minister to a – for her – premature end. Is she rushing it through because it matters so much to her, and she is guessing that she might not get another chance for this unless she does it now, or at least very quickly? Although I disagree with her on GRA, my view is that she believes in it very strongly, as a genuine matter of principle, and wants to get it on the statute book while she can … If the worst came to the worst, it would be her final legacy …
Be that as it may, it’s time any manipulators and charlatans and infiltrators in the SNP who are not front and back committed to independence were called out. And shown the door. If Joanna Cherry’s coming back to Holyrood has them shaking in their boots, it can only be good for all of us.
Anyway, what’s all this nonsense about “self-ID”? It’s not as if it’s something new. A company called Sevco did it several years ago, they self-identified as some football club called Rangers.
I suggest if you feel that the UK gov is going against WHO guidance that people write to their Scottish MP and MSP’s and urge them to push for us to follow those guidelines. Scotland has an opportunity here to pursue a different tack and I think we as people to should bombard our government to implement a different approach.

As you know, yesterday I said that that the global COVID-19 outbreak can now be described as a pandemic.
This is not a decision we took lightly.
We have made this assessment for two main reasons: first, because of the speed and scale of transmission.
Almost 125,000 cases have now been reported to WHO, from 118 countries and territories. In the past two weeks, the number of cases reported outside China has increased almost 13-fold, and the number of affected countries has almost tripled.
The second reason is that despite our frequent warnings, we are deeply concerned that some countries are not approaching this threat with the level of political commitment needed to control it.
Let me be clear: describing this as a pandemic does not mean that countries should give up. The idea that countries should shift from containment to mitigation is wrong and dangerous.
On the contrary, we have to double down.
This is a controllable pandemic. Countries that decide to give up on fundamental public health measures may end up with a larger problem, and a heavier burden on the health system that requires more severe measures to control.
All countries must strike a fine balance between protecting health, preventing economic and social disruption, and respecting human rights.
We urge all countries to take a comprehensive approach tailored to their circumstances – with containment as the central pillar.
We are calling on countries to take a four-pronged strategy:
First, prepare and be ready.
There are still 77 countries and territories with no reported cases, and 55 countries and territories that have reported 10 cases or less.
And all countries with cases have unaffected areas. You have an opportunity to keep it that way. Prepare your people and your health facilities.
Second, detect, prevent and treat.
You can’t fight a virus if you don’t know where it is. That means robust surveillance to find, isolate, test and treat every case, to break the chains of transmission.
Third, reduce and suppress.
To save lives we must reduce transmission. That means finding and isolating as many cases as possible, and quarantining their closest contacts. Even if you cannot stop transmission, you can slow it down and protect health facilities, old age homes and other vital areas – but only if you test all suspected cases.
And fourth, innovate and improve.
This is a new virus and a new situation. We’re all learning and we must all find new ways to prevent infections, save lives, and minimize impact. All countries have lessons to share.
WHO is working day and night to support all countries.
We have shipped supplies of personal protective equipment to 57 countries, we’re preparing to ship to a further 28, and we’ve shipped lab supplies to 120 countries.
We’ve published an R&D roadmap, with a set of core protocols for how studies should be done.
We’ve published a comprehensive package of technical guidance.
We’ve had more than 176,000 enrollments in our COVID training courses on OpenWHO.
We’re working with the World Economic Forum and the International Chambers of Commerce to engage the private sector. We’re also working with FIFA.
We’re working with our colleagues across the UN system to support countries to develop their preparedness and response plans, according to the 8 pillars.
And more than 440 million U.S. dollars has now been pledged to WHO’s Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan
We thank those countries that have contributed, especially those that have contributed fully flexible funds. Because this is a dynamic situation, we need the greatest flexibility possible to provide the best support possible. In the spirit of solidarity, we ask countries not to earmark funds for this response.

I urge our Scottish government to take a different tack and follow the guidelines clearly stated above in the WHO statement. We must continue testing and isolating our citizens, we can and must not accept that ‘our loved ones’ will die with no attempt to take the measures that are having an effect in China and elsewhere, I urge to you to follow your conscience, put your party political differences to one side and work for the benefit of the whole of Scotland to prevent further spread of this virus.
We must not give up on our vulnerable and older people at the behest of a lack of leadership and questionable science with regard to the notion that ‘herd immunity’ will ensue by adhering to the Tory government’s advice yesterday, 12/3/20.
There is increasing pressure on the UK to change course with this, from the scientific community itself, I urge you all to follow the developments and criticism and hopefully create pressure to stop and reverse this course of folly by the UK government.
Social distancing must immediately be put into to place in Scotland, the WHO recommendations and the clamour that is beginning to question the science and best practices from other areas must be the deciding factors and we must not give up so easily and just let people suffer and die in their homes because of a coterie of self appointed experts who seem to ‘think’ ‘they know best’.

Stoker @ 6.03 finishes by saying something in Nicola Sturgeon’s defence. I agree, Stoker: she and her Ministers are taking Coronavirus far more seriously than Boris Johnson and his pals are at Westminster. This is to be commended, and encouraged.
If Scotland/Holyrood/NHS Scotland can take a more radical and stricter approach to the whole thing than England/ Westminster/ NHS England is doing, I think we should. And NS might just be able and willing to do that. Don’t forget she was very successful as Minister of Health before she took over at the helm from AS, and obviously liked that job and took it very seriously.
Just imagine what would happen if Scotland’s approach proved clearly more successful than England’s. As I imagine, in the long run – or maybe even immediately – it would. I don’t hope for that: to the contrary, I would like both countries to handle the matter in the best possible way, with optimum results all round. It’s the good of the respective populations that matters, not any political capital that can be made out of it. All the same, the fact is that Boris Johnson’s handling of the crisis has been a lot weaker (and more dubious) than that of many other countries, and could just be heading for disaster.
With you, Stoker, mentioning something in fairness to Nicola S, let me – also in fairness, and however unexpectedly – say something positive about Jackson Carlaw. Scroll down on the link given by Breeks at 5.13 and you will see a tweet from John Nicolson MP in which, for the sake of comparison, he puts a conciliatory and helpful tweet by Jackson Carlaw side by side with a very nasty one from Westminster Tory James Cleverley. Cleverley lambasts Nicola for her Press Conference, as if its sole purpose was to upstage Johnson’s, whereas Carlaw seems to tell Cleverley in no uncertain terms that this is not the time for that kind of political point-scoring, and insists that there is very good cooperation going on in the face of an emergency which affects all of us.
That does Carlaw considerable credit. It already shows that the political (cross-party) response in Scotland to the crisis is a more mature than the childish politicking of someone like Cleverley who was, if I remember rightly, the Chairman of the Tory Party until recently. The only fly in the ointment might be if the SNP’s John Nicolson is seeing this only as a way of taking the mickey out of the Tories, exploiting their apparent disagreements or divisions, just as a way of sending them up. The Coronavirus issue is too serious for that sort of thing as well, if you ask me. This is not the time, and Coronavirus is not the issue, on which people should be going in for mere party-political point-scoring. The common good of all of us, the whole population, deserves better than that.
Facing this kind of crisis, it’s our politicians on all sides really started to grow up, and behave like adults – as should we all.
