All of these are based on the idea that 2012’s Edinburgh Agreement is what made the 2014 referendum possible and all of them are absolutely and categorically wrong. What made the 2014 referendum possible was the law which gives peoples the legal right to freely choose their sovereignty and international status with no interference – and that is all.
Alex Salmond’s extremely gracious offer to allow the UK to put on a show of diplomatic collaboration was a completely unnecessary step that no law, precedent or convention required and still doesn’t. The only person who has ever blocked, obstructed or denied the people of Scotland their right to vote is the one who was given the democratic mandate to make the second referendum happen, Nicola Sturgeon. No one else has ever had the power to do that.

Worse ever Tory gov etc – this SNP instead went all out to trash all those advantages. *Our* advantages, our assets, that we built while building them up as a party that would deliver independence and keep us in the EU.
They joined with the unionists to try and destroy and neuter Salmond, Wings, Cherry etc. This isn’t just an incompetent party: it actively acted against independence at the very best time for it and in a massive way. They did what the unionists never could alone. And far, far too many supposed independence supporters not only fell for it but cheered it on and continually keep on kicking the wrong people, even now.
Now, post 2021, they’re not even pretending anymore. They’re taking the remaining gullible idiots for what they are with the 2023 referendum and plebiscite lie. If by any chance they hold an indyref next year it’ll be to throw it or to ensure a U.K. driven horrific new form of devolution (which would really just change the constitution to kill off independence) is delivered.
I’d love to say we need rid of Sturgeon and her entire leadership clique but it is too late now. Five years of hounding out and neutering all the best pro Indy folk and replacing them with useless or worse place people is too long. It needed done before May 2021. I have no idea what we do now, but there is a massive danger in having these people in power now. Every year that passes they do more damage to the Indy cause.

Far too close for a savvy and serious Indy-minded FM to call for a referendum. I can’t be the only reader who recalls how Rev Stu has charted the flat lining of Indy support across the years since 2014.

You think an independence campaign would lower it? The last independence campaign started with 28% indy support, and got it up to ~52% by a couple of weeks before the referendum, before it dropped back to 45% after the seriously dishonest and probably illegal Vow campaign. Even at the 45% mark, that’s still a healthy >50% increase on 28%.
Given all that has happened since then, especially brexit and its all its abusive consequences, a decent Scottish independence campaign would be practically unstoppable. Its primary problem isn’t support, it’s getting it started in spite of the SNP’s leadership dragging their iceberg-enclosed feet!

Problem there is, in 2015 and then add in Brexit, we HAD an unstoppable YES Campaign, Brexit actually took us over the line and a Constitutional crisis the UK could not properly survive. Independence and inevitable International recognition were right there in the palm of our hands, until Sturgeon the Betrayer and Constitutionally illiterate imbecile, took hold of the reins and took it upon herself to capitulate and sell out Scotland’s rights and sovereignty.

We NEED her impeachment, and if it was down to me, her criminal prosecution for what she tried to do to Alex Salmond. She’s a liar and a fraud. Not necessarily being ironic.
I just can’t believe that both of these statements are true:
1) In Scotland, a convincing majority of Scots want and will vote for Independence.
2) In Scotland, there are politicians and leaders willing and able to accept the democratic mandate of a convincing majority of Scots and lead Scotland to Independence.
The vast majority on here are convinced that 1) is True and 2) is False. That leads to the eternal dialogues on here, and ever more convoluted explanations in justification of these beliefs.
I wonder if 1) is False and 2) is True. It is uncommon to find any political movement that remains essentially leaderless once a majority of the people are in favour. That just is not how politics works.
But why argue about it? The truth or otherwise of 1) can be assessed by looking at the polls. How stands support for Indy today? Up, down, flat-lined, what? What is the trend? If it’s on the up, extrapolate the graph to when a convincing majority for Indy will exist.
It’s not complicated!

Well, setting aside the rights and wrongs of it, and sidestepping ‘foreign’ influences, in 1689 there was a body of opinion in Scotland which wanted rid of James VII, who formed a Convention of the Estates and voted to oust the King and remove him from the throne.
As I understand it, SALVO are trying to convene a new Convention of the Estates to further Independence, and circumvent a waste of space Holyrood, which of course is the A game primary objective, but I wonder whether there should be a supplementary drive to depose Sturgeon and / or severely limit Holyrood’s capacity to screw up a determined Constitutional Initiative.
We need clear understanding whether Holyrood stands or falls as “ours” or “theirs”, so Holyrood needs drawn off the fence on the Claim of Right. Tackling Sturgeons Constitutional ineptitude and abject failure / betrayal would be an expeditious way to bring the matter to a head.

I get that SALVO has a firm handle on the constitutional case and is ‘daring’ all current SNP MSPs and MPs to support the Edinburgh declaration.
But we know what Sturgeon’s like – she’ll just ignore it.
What she can’t ignore is the growing resistance to the GRR Bill. Ash Regan has become a figurehead of sorts but there are strong principled women (and men) behind her who know that Sturgeon has their cards marked. They also know that the popular support ‘out there’ is with them. They have nothing to lose now.
Sturgeon has been on the run since that debate, pausing only to lie to the Public Audit committee before jetting off to Egypt to make an arse of herself. But she can’t keep running. And if the current judicial hearing is anything to go by (we should hear more on that later today) then professionals across civil service and legal bodies associated with Scotgov business will be working out how to put distance between themselves and her before it all goes properly pear-shaped.
It really does feel like the end is near. (But then again, I’m sure I remember writing something similar weeks, nay months ago.)

2: How many Scottish members of a Extinguished Scottish parliament sit in the UK parliament as representatives of Scotland?
WHEN the English and Scottish governments in 1706 and 1707 respectively ( agreed ) not to ask the Scots to vote to join the treaty of the union,
1: Were the NATION of SCOTS, left outside the agreed terms of union between of the parliament of Scotland and the parliament of England by that decision?….(See UK parliament site information source)
2: Why did the English parliament and the Scottish parliament think that Scots maybe entitled to have a vote separate, on joining the treaty of union?
3: Why did the English parliament and the Scottish parliament consider the Scots to be a separate group entity from Scotlands parliament?
If the Scottish parliament was extinguished in 1707, there is no treaty of union between parliaments surviving the original agreement between the two parliaments….only the English parliament entered the new British parliament.
There can be no ( Acting )members of a extinguished Scottish parliament sitting in Westminster parliament since 1707 to present day…

The Scottish parliament ceased to exist in 1707.

The 1707 extinguished Scottish Parliament for the past three hundred years is no longer liable for the treaty of the union.
It can not be in the treaty of union if it has ceased to exist.

Because throughout the years that followed the 1707 malarky, other Acts were incorporated & a *brand new state* was born with Scots losing thier shit the Union wasn’t more uniony & do something about this separate laws malarky. & Yes, we still have those tossers in parliament, lording it up in the Lords.

Another way of looking at this is that the English parliament entered the British parliament in 1706 as the the English parliament, while it was still in continuous session until 1708 officially.
However the Scottish parliament had broke its session and closed its doors, before the entry date that opened the new British Parliament.

Hate to say it again but if ANY Independence Party prepares some financial projections for scrutiny, revealing that an Independent Scotland could stand on it’s own two feet, then the majority of Scots would vote to go it alone and, more importantly protest vigorously for the right to have the vote.

The UK government has conducted a series of polls on Scottish independence, and they’ve point blank refused to release the result, it doesn’t take a genius to know why the result won’t be released.
No, I’m quietly confident that a majority of Scots know that independence will benefit them and that is why successive UK PM’s have refused to issue an S30 and deny Scots democracy, add in and it’s of the utmost importance, we have an FM who also doesn’t want independence, we can bypass Westminster, but it’s a bit more difficult (for now at least) to circumvent that treacherous bastard at Bute House.

I suppose my response to that is how long will it take? “Hoping” to have 100,000 signatories is one thing, doing it is another. I remain unconvinced that Salvo, Liberation and/or SSRG are going to produce concrete results faster than just getting on with it and pushing for indyref2, or preferably plebiscitary elections.
I still don’t see how these self appointed bodies are going to demonstrate their legitimacy either to the “community of the realm” in Scotland, or to the international community if that’s whose feet we are going to throw ourselves at?
You may well be right that Salvo’s advice is correct, but who is it from? Is it a secret? Who have Salvo and Liberation been talking to? Even if they are under an obligation of confidentiality not to release individual names of authorities they have consulted with, the process itself seems remarkably opaque. If on the other hand these bodies are public, and they have back up for the claimed advice, then let’s see it.

OK, that begs some more questions. Who makes up Liberation and the Scottish National Council? Who appointed them? How are they funded? When Sarah Salyers had her stair heid rammie at the Alba conference, I saw these bodies mentioned in the post rammie analysis, but answers came there none. Who have they been contacting? What have they said? It’s just not good enough to say: “Se have been assured that…..”. Show us the money!

6% of the membership of what? Who is the 6%? I’m happy for Salvo to exist as a ginger-group and to help put pressure on to examine potential alternative routes to indy if we draw a blank on getting indyref2 or holding plebiscitary elections.
However, like a lot of Scots – and I suspect the people, countries and governments abroad we will depend on for international recognition – I’m unconvinced there is some short cut to independence, or some clever legal wheeze that will allow us to simply walk away and declare UDI without you know….actually voting for it.

Yes it is deeply depressing. Holyrood may have a majority of MSPs from pro indy parties, but sadly it simply isn’t true that there are multiple mandates for independence, because that’s not what people were voting for.
We can insist that there are several mandates supporting Holyrood’s right to hold a referendum, and it’s true that polling shows >60% (which must ipso facto include some unionist voters) of Scottish electors think it should be entirely a matter for Holyrood to decide when and how often we hold referendums.
As for nothing getting done, the solution for that lies in the hands of voters. If the SNP are coming up empty, they need to punish them at the polls. It obviously hasn’t worked trying to change the SNP from within: the party is no longer fit for purpose, nor can it be rendered so.
It must either be replaced as the IPP was by Sinn Fein in Ireland a little over a century ago, or it must be made to come to terms with other pro-indy parties which have managed to deprive it of a majority. Realistically that can only be Alba, and the only practicable route to independence in the short to medium term is plebiscitary elections.

Don’t know about anyone else. But like the Rev 2 or 3 years ago, I am just bored with the whole thing now. I was a minute by minute obsessive about independence. Now I feel it is waste of my precious time and energy.
I have cut back on Twitter , only post once in a while. No-one seems to be doing anything that will change anything. We have loads of blogs and useless politicians. But until we have a government serious about independence, we may as well stop wasting everyday going round in circles.
I just don’t see an end to this inertia.
Sturgeon will still be there in 2026. We will not have had a referendum. That’s how hopeless our situation is.
What is the difference between a plebiscite and a referendum?

I’ll be honest and say that much of my grasp of this is, erm, blurred, and see it as unnecessary in a representative democracy.
That is, if my understanding of representative democracy is correct: that citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf, in accordance with pre-election pledges. We have repeatedly commanded HR to hold a referendum, not for them to ask WM for permission, or threaten to introduce plebiscite mid-term. There is no ambiguity.
The fact that they have failed to do so simply means that Scotland is NOT a democracy. And anyone who thinks that Sturgeon will hold ANY plebiscite election, or Indy ref 2, is grasping at straws.
Sturgeon has already lost the party.

The SNP are wrong. It’s part of them trying to assert control over the movement as a whole. That’s why the movement as a whole should resist the SNP trying to couch such elections as something they “own”, i.e. that only votes for them should count and/or that they can direct and control who stands for each seat in a plebiscitary election.
To be clear: victory in plebiscitary elections is game over. There is no requirement for a second step or a confirmatory referendum.
Alex Salmond said in the Edinburgh Wee Alba Book meeting that he felt the movement as a whole should be agreeing a slate of candidates for plebiscitary elections and that those elections should be couched as a single issue vote.
Trouble is, I don’t see Sturgeon’s SNP agreeing to that (or for that matter the Scottish Greens who have form for that kind of thing e.g. standing candidates in Holyrood constituency seats they have no hope of winning). The bar for victory in plebiscitary elections is the total of ALL votes for pro-indy parties. 50% + 1 = de facto independence. No ifs, no buts.
The UK government can certainly make things more difficult WRT blocking a referendum and/or threatening not to recognise the process. Like it or not, that will have an impact internationally. It’s far harder for them to block or impede a plebiscitary election however, which is why the movement has to pressurise SNP members and voters to force their party to co-operate with all pro-indy parties and ensure plebiscitary elections happen at Holyrood not Westminster.
They might not be ready to do that yet, but when indyref2 fails to materialise in 2023, Sturgeon will be exposed for the fake she really is.

She might, and she might not. The only realistic ways I can see her being removed is a palace coup within the SNP (…and there’s very little evidence of that being on the cards) or electoral defeat. The proof of the pudding will be the reaction of all those still supporting Nicola when it becomes evident she won’t deliver indyref2.
That’s already obvious to most of us of course, but she and they will still insist it’s possible. If the SC finds in their favour, they’ll have to explain how it happens in the available time given the timescales we already know about for 2014. That’s largely a matter for the SNP membership I’d say: I don’t think Sturgeon and her cabal are listening to the rest of the movement. Indeed they’re not listening to their party as their over-riding of the NEC results the other year amply demonstrated. I’ve said I don’t believe marches and demos will result in independence, not that they are totally ineffective.
FWIW I’d say the best way to change the minds of those who matter – which in this situation has to be SNP MPs, MSPs and office holders – has to be lobbying them and showing that they are losing support, and demonstrating that their support is falling in the elecorate and in polls.
Whatever Sturgeonite loyalists say in public, if they’re getting bombarded with folk at surgeries, on the street when they’re canvassing, and seeing negative impacts in bye elections and in the polls, that might encourage them to change policy.
If it doesn’t, the only plausible means is by giving them a bloody nose at the next elections which is the responsibility of voters as a whole.

There are two downsides to that argument. The first is that lobbying as you describe is an individual approach, when the collective is much more powerful. Lobbying is more likely to be ignored.
The second is that there is no hope of this type of approach being newsworthy. A large demo or march may, and I stress may, be reported in the media.
However, if we join up some dots, there may be a better understanding of the pro-Indy psyche and show that gatherings are significantly better.
On numerous occasions I’ve asked for an explanation of where tens of thousands of former SNP members have gone. It’s clear they haven’t gone to the other pro Indy political party, ALBA.
Yet, while SNP membership has all but vanished and Alba membership has stagnated at a worryingly low level, the YES/NO stats have remained constant for quite a while. That suggests two things: first, that most, if not all, ex-members are disillusioned with SNP but remain pro-Indy. The second is that these ex-members may be wary, perhaps for differing reasons, of switching allegiances to another Indy party, perhaps perceiving it as a clone of the SNP they once joined. Once bitten, twice shy?
Nearly all SNP voters are pro Indy – there is no other reason to vote for SNP unless you are part of the tiny woke faction – so we should not pour scorn on them. They are NOT coming over to Alba, but still, they are not the enemy. There must be room to accommodate ALL who support Independence, so unless Alba come up with something spectacular in the coming weeks, a new blueprint is essential to encourage as many supporters as possible to come together and demand a referendum, and that can only be as a united non- judgmental, non-political movement marching in unison.

Hmm…I dunno if I agree with a lot of your assertions TBH. Individual lobbying can be effective, particularly if a given MSP or MP is getting a lot of it in their mailbags, surgeries and out on the doorsteps. This can be pretty effective, as we saw in the recent travails of the Tory party: a lot of Tory MPs were gauging how their constituency parties and wider electorates felt.
It’s true that large demonstrations can be a great boost, particularly as you say if they are reported and visible, but if they are relatively small they could even be counter productive. However much some folk like a good Yes march, they leave a lot of people cold, and we can hardly claim they’ve produced huge turnouts by any stretch of the imagination. If we were getting Catalan La Diada style turnouts, I’d be more convinced.
I can’t answer your question about where former SNP members have gone. I’d say most Alba members are probably ex-SNP members. I reckon a lot of the 125,000 claimed SNP members at their high tide members had never been party members before 2015: they joined thinking it would help propel us to indyref2 and hoped that brexit would break the back of the union, only to find out that the SNP had been captured by an unsavoury and unholy cabal of devolutionists, grey suited managerial neo-libs and TRA zealots.
Historically quite a few SNP supporters have NOT been dyed in the wool independence supporters: they lent their vote to the SNP based on their (then?) perceived record for competence in government – hard as that may be to believe now! – and the fact the yoon alternatives were worse. Refugees from NuLabour realised what side their bread was buttered on once Scots rumbled Blair and Brown. They saw that the SNP was now their route to power, cushy sinecures, quango positions and a seat on the gravy train.
Longer term, if Alba doesn’t replace the SNP the way Sinn Fein replaced the IPP in Ireland, we better hope the SNP membership and supporters can effect change in the SNP, or we may be waiting a real generation for independence. At the very least we need Alba to win enough support and seats to hold the balance of power, as there are plenty of people so scunnered with the SNP that they’d probably just not vote or vote against them if they were the only option.
