Wings Over Scotland

New Labour Pundit Of The Year

Posted on November 10, 2016 by

Regular readers of this site will be impressed, if perhaps less than astonished, at the new high score achieved this week in the timeless game of McTernan Predicts:

mcternanpredicts15a

mcternanpredicts15

It followed an unbroken line of epic forecasting inexactitude for the former Labour spin doctor and ever-present media pundit, stretching all the way back to 2010.

On Brexit:

mcternanremain

mctpre

On the 2015 Labour leadership election:

mcternanpredicts12m2

On Jim Murphy’s stint as Scottish Labour leader:

On the aftermath of the indyref:

On ex-Tory Douglas Carswell of UKIP forcing a by-election in Clacton in 2014:

mcternancarswell1

(Carswell romped home with an increased vote share of almost 60% and an increased majority of over 12,000.) On the 2015 general election in Scotland:

And in the UK as a whole:

mcternan2015

On the 2016 Australian elections, won by Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberal Party:

On the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, just three months before what turned out to be the SNP’s unprecedented landslide and majority:

On what would(n’t) happen after he got that one spectacularly wrong:

And on the previous Labour leadership election:

[EDIT November 15] And finally, on last Friday’s big match:

But the President Of Wrongness can’t afford to rest on his laurels. Because there’s a hungry young turk in town (where “in town” means “the Mail on Sunday, the Telegraph and on telly”), and he’s been quietly building a track record over the same period to show he’s got the chops for the challenge.

hodges1

(If you have no idea who Barry Goldwater was, like we didn’t, he was the Republican candidate who got hammered by Lyndon B. Johnson in the US Presidential election of 1964, the year after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.)

Of course, there’s also a rank (and we mean that in every sense) outsider:

This site is poorly qualified to judge such an august title, of course. As well as not being New Labourites, we called the 2015 UK election right from 2012, we called the possible loss of the SNP’s Holyrood majority almost nine months ahead of the 2016 election, we called Brexit right as far back as 2014 and we called the US election right from 2015 onwards.

So we thought we’d hand it over to you to pick the winner.

Who'll be the WORST at predicting politics in 2017?

And the people just aren’t listening to them because IndyRef#1 opened their eyes to the endless, craven lies they spout. It is truly risible. Best laugh is they STILL come out with this guff expecting people to suddenly forget all they have said and done and trust them. They still think of themselves as being ‘influential’ failing to see how the landscape of Scotland has changed beyond any recognition. Their purile, wayward mutterings amount to nothing more than a wet fart looking for someone who’s not already holding their nose.

They don’t see the people of Scotland are finsihed with them, taht we have moved on and are seeking a better future without them; a better future they themselves promised us for decades–and never delivered. But, of course, even if the could have delivered such, they never actually would deliver for taking people out of pverty, educating them, moving them away from working class Labour voters would simply never do. Keep them down, keep them poor–it’s the Labour way.

No more. Scotland will take charge of its own reins, there is nothing surer. It is only a matter of time, by no later than 2020. And Mystic McTernan–you can definitely bank on THAT!

I posted this on the previous thread but it seems more relevant here :-

Read an item on BBC Ceefax this morning that gave me reason to have a wee chuckle to myself but then realised it illustrates just how the BBC propaganda sometimes works.

The item states, under the headline :-

“Guides and scouts ‘gain boost for life’.”

People who were in the scouts or guides in childhood have better mental health in later life, a study suggests,

Analysis of a study of 10,000 people found ex-members were 15% less likely than other adults to suffer anxiety or mood disorders at the age of 50.

    .
    .

Now there is nothing whatsoever wrong with the study nor with the scientific data. The error comes in the supposed scientific conclusion drawn from analysis by the BBC headline writer.

Their conclusion is not in the item itself but is in the headline that states, “Guides and scouts ‘gain boost for life’.” They do nothing of the sort.

The headline claims that by joining the scouts or guides it will give the recruit better mental health. However, the text in the article says nothing of the sort, for the proper conclusion, by anyone with a real scientific background would arrive at a quite different, and more correct, conclusion.

The correct conclusion is that the type of person, who joins the scouts or guides is the type of person more likely to have better mental health in later life.
Ergo, they do not gain it by joining the organisation because they are already predisposed to have better mental health at age 50.

Furthermore, it shows that the kind of person who does not join such quasi-military organisations is more likely to not be predisposed to have better mental health at age 50.

However, neither correct conclusion has concluded the organisations have anything whatsoever to do with the matter of better mental health.

This illustrates the sheer lack of investigative skills of the BBC, self styled, journalists and more so of their headline writers.

This scientist agrees with you. At one stage my father ran the local scout troop, my mother the guides. I? I went to Boy’s Brigade AND St. John. This was all in a thoroughly middle class area of Dunedin, NZ.

A fellow kid I knew in BB lived in a ‘difficult’ home adjacent to said area, from the dank, rarely visited valley down the back. This boy grew up to be NZ’s Most Wanted, yes really. He was a bit of a bampot back then aged 8 and BB didn’t do much to knock the hard edges off him, reputedly his Dad did that. He and another boy I knew, nice young lad, robbed the local post office. Bampot’s shotgun discharged into the counter as he leapt it.

He ended up ‘going bush’ a bit like ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’. He topped himself in Mt. Eden nick, suspected of having murdered a woman.

This,Cameron, is the BBC we are commenting upon.

It is my opinion, and only my opinion, that the BBC headline writer has a hidden agenda. Perhaps he/she was a scouter/guider or perhaps the motive is to recruit for these organisations.

My point was that the study only concludes that people who have been in these organisations have better mental health in later life. The study in no way claims anything else than that.

Yet the headline write has made the claim that the recruits, “gain”, better mental health in later life just by joining those organisations. The study makes no such claim.

That is, though, exactly what the Westminster Establishment Propaganda Wing is all about. As Independence supporters we see this all the time and Rev Stu is adept at highlighting it.

McTernan. makes such unsubstantiated claims with his predictions. He draws false conclusions upon evidence that does not support his conclusions.

    “Muscleguy & Robert Peffers
Did you know that the “business-cycle” is a fallacy? Incorrect analysis of data and wrongly identified correlations. There are still folk who think it is a fact of nature though.”

That’s the whole point. It is a truth that a very large number of people get taken in simple by being unable to read and comprehend and interpret properly what they have read.

I spent 50 years in electro/mechanical diagnostic work, ( mainly electronics). It might surprise you how many times I got to a job to find someone had gone through a very long and complex series of tests and diagnostics and failed to find the fault.

Yet upon arriving at the job it was not uncommon to find they had failed to do the basic checks like switching on the mains electricity, turning on the fuel or water supplies and checking plugs and pipework stopcocks were connected up and turned on.

The tendency is to draw false conclusions from the presented evidence or to miss out bits of the presented evidence.

So there is this prime example still on BBC Ceefax today.
The false report is under the Heading of, “Health”.

BTW: Wingers who do not pay for a TV Licence can get the BBC Ceefax pages on BBC Radio Channels on the TV set thus NOT viewing live TV broadcasts.

The false report is under the Heading of, “Health”.
