Stuey's RepAIr Shop – Best quality in our town

Everybody loves to moan about AI in game development these days, but surely nobody can object to it being used to fix objectively awful mistakes and game-wrecking bugs, or add new or interesting features to things, right? RIGHT?

FRGR DLX

This brilliant compiled-BASIC character-block port from 2021 was never completed, so Claude and I have finished the job. We've added Lady Frogs, snakes, diving turtles, deadly crocodiles and increasing difficulty – fewer logs and turtles, more traffic, less time. This is a much more feature-rich game than the original version, with no loss of speed, and was the most human-intensive mod of them all.

ANTEATER - SOLID GROUND EDITION

screenshot

It always drove me crazy that the anteater was standing in thin air on top of an open tunnel, when there was a totally needless extra layer of Earth at the bottom of the screen. Now that Bubu (RIP) is no longer with us to be upset about it, sane physics has been restored to the universe.

BUTCH HARD GUY - CARNIVORE EDITION

screenshot

BHG was an intrinsically good platform action game wrecked by moronic control choices. Up now performs the high jump rather than the useless low jump (you can still do a low jump with down+fire). The fire button now defaults to the much more useful kick move, with punch on fire+left/right. Defaults to cursor keys so you can actually play it, not "VEEGAN MIND CONTROL". Now a much more enjoyable game.

CAVES OF DOOM - FUN EDITION

screenshot

This is a really smart high-speed action game which was inexplicably slowed to a painful crawl by the need to have space in your fuel tank before you could collect the objects which were the game's goal but also served as your fuel source. Now you can pick them up any time, making it hugely faster and more enjoyable to play.

CHOPPER X1 - BOMBER EDITION

screenshot

This game was a right old mess when it came to smart bombs and I had to guess what it was SUPPOSED to be doing, but they no longer stop working after you drop two and they're replenished when you die.

DEATHCHASE - ARCTIC EDITION

screenshot

Speed across the snowy wastes in the polar twilight in pursuit of bad guys whose reflective snow-jackets make them look like ghosts.

DEATHCHASE - MIDNIGHT EDITION

screenshot

This all-night-time version was inspired by the colour palette of the unofficial port for obscure Hungarian micro the Videoton TVC.

GALACTIC TROOPER ARCADE

screenshot

This one was basically done by Claude from a single prompt. The colours have been modded to resemble the arcade (which also fixed the ugly BRIGHT attributes), and auto-repeat fire is enabled to save your keyboard a battering in a game where you never have to stop shooting.

GALACTIC WARRIORS - ACTION EDITION

screenshot

A simple mod for this very simple but fast and tough Centipede derivative with no vertical movement, that no longer makes you sit through an interminable beeper tune before every single life. Auto-repeat fire is also enabled by default.

I AIN'T GOT NOBODY - ACTION EDITION

screenshot

See the entry for Caves Of Doom. This is the Harry Price ripoff of that game with the same fix applied.

MISSILE DEFENCE - BIG SCORE EDITION

screenshot

The score display on the Speccy's best Missile Command was fairly screwed up in every way, and went really hideously wrong after Round 5. This version fixes the bugs and has the large score display enabled permanently from the start.

27 OCTOBER 2026

MISSILE DEFENCE - CLEAR SKIES EDITION

screenshot

This version also fixes all the display bugs, but only shows the large version of the score at the end of each round for those who prefer a cleaner screen.

MORRIS MEETS THE BIKERS - RECOVERY EDITION

screenshot

Fear not, for help is here! Punctures from nails are no longer basically a death sentence. Now you can fix them by collecting the P icons, which will restore your tyres to full health at a cost of the usual three coins plus 1 coin for each level of tyre damage.

ROAD RACERS - GPS EDITION

screenshot

This very early 16K take on Rally-X now has directional controls rather than rotational ones and makes a sound when you collect a flag, and I also got rid of the extremely tedious wait for it to display the start screen character-by-character before you could play.

SPACE PANIC ZX

screenshot

A minor tweak of the splendid Sam Spade by Silversoft with the colours switched and the main sprite redrawn, to better resemble the Universal arcade game it was a clone of. Also incorporates the fix that made it run in 16K as intended.

TAPPER - GENTLEMEN, PLEASE!

screenshot

Tapper was a good arcade port gameplay-wise but a gruesome assault on the eyes and the ears. This takes FlunkyRetro's recent "One At A Time" mod that stopped customers piling up in an incomprehensible visual mess, adds lovely 128K AY renditions of the original tunes and a beep when you serve a glass, sets keys to QAOP-Space and (as it's easier with all the fixes) defaults to medium difficulty, as well as sorting out an issue with the barman's trousers.

TAXI - KNOWLEDGE EDITION

screenshot

This neat and quirky game from the author of Cruising On Broadway was somewhat spoiled by the mind-wrecking in-out controls, because human brains don't work well upside down. Now you move naturally with QAOP, which puts the difficulty where it belongs - on the screen, not inside your head.

27 OCTOBER 2026

X-MEN - CONTINUOUS EDITION

screenshot

A very respectable Pac-Man clone for the ZX81 that's vastly improved by making Pac keep moving when you let go of the controls, like in the arcade.

DIGGER PC

screenshot

This cute port for the Pico-8 fantasy computer, of a famous old DOS Mr Do derivative, had a disastrous game-killing bug which I managed to hunt down and Claude fixed.
