Another lucky escape

Alert readers may recall that almost three years ago, the No campaign issued a series of dire warnings that independence could cause supermarket prices to rise:

What with the Treasury itself predicting a £66bn loss to the UK economy and likely Brexit repayments to the EU of 20bn Euros (lets call it £20bn), this is only the beginning of our marvellous British post-Marmite Brexit dystopia that Scotland voted to remain a part of.

And yet remarkably the BBC and others are still trying to say we’d be worse off independent.

Just what did the average voter in the UK THINK would happen to the cost of imported goods under Brexit scenario? The UK is a NET importer of goods and by the voting public’s own demand hard borders and hard Bexit conditions are about to be enacted.

Did they honestly think the other 27 member states and their respective business communities were not going to be affected and take action to protect their own interests? Did they believe that international law, border controls, tariffs and taxes wouldn’t have any effect on them?

Scotland is surplus in food and drink. Mass exporters. Self sufficient. Why would prices go up when Scottish consumers are nearer the source. Unless supermarkets are making foods dearer by unnecessary transport journeys. Aldi and Lidl’s prices are cheaper because of quicker, reliable turnover.

Scotland pays higher prices for fuel and energy despite being nearer the source. The companies wanted to charge less but Westminster would not agree. It would bring parity because it is colder in Scotland.

If the rest of the UK did not have Scottish products there would be shortages or prices would be higher because of transport costs. Beef, fish etc. Fish and beef products are exported to the EU for higher prices. Scotland is surplus in fuel and energy. Exports 25%

Brexit will mean prices will be higher in Scotland. 62% in Scotland voted to Remain.

Independence in or out of the EU is the only solution to Westminster intransigence.

Sky desperately trying to promote more illegal war. To detract from Brexit crisis. Deplorable. Migration in Europe was caused by Westminster illegal wars. The U.K., France and the US were arming and supporting the ‘Rebels’ in Syria. The majority if people in Syria support Assad. The Tories only have 36% support of the vote. Less of the electorate. 20%? They are a minority Gov. The dope on the rope is a lying disgrace. They should be giving aid and reconstruction.

Prices are higher in Scotland compared to some goods in depressed parts the UK. Firms taking a licence and liberty to charge more. Some goods in Eire from UK based firms (chains) do charge more but that is balanced out by other goods costing less.

Hotels and travel are less compared to the UK. It leads to more foreign tourists from the US etc. Overall prices are less. The cost of living lower with higher welfare benefits. Higher pensions and child allowance. Higher basic tax but more equal distribution. Fairer more equal country. With less debt. Lower corporation tax. The EU is clamping down on major tax evasion. Google etc. The reason the Tory multimillionaires and their associates want out of the EU.

The only tax the EU want to equalise are VAT and corporate tax for equal tax reasons. Minimise tax evasion for equal trade reasons. Most countries (European) have corporate tax at 20%.

Maybe it is profiteering but Tesco is probably taking the huff because they were planning to put prices up themselves using the falling pound as an excuse but Unilever beat them to it.
    ……..

Once upon a time the UK produced about 65% of its own food. That fell to around 50% when Tony Blair was PM. This fall of course impacted adversely on our trade balance.

The amount of food we produce has possibly fallen further since then therefore any fall in the pound will impact massively on our food bills. Since a lot of the food we import comes from the EU then Brexit will also have an impact on food prices. Double Whammy.

Fuel prices are going up – combination of weak pound and OPEC cutting production. I have seen it at £1.21 per litre in garages around here – Central Belt – over the past week or so. Food deliveries to supermarkets are delivered by road. Increasing fuel prices will be further upward pressure on food prices.

Not sure why the snp allow Brillo to get away with it. How many times has this been said and yet snp go softly softly. All Robertson had to say was stop talking over me, don’t be so rude let me speak- or if the riposte is “I asked the question Ill ask again”.. simply say smiling “I did answer the question- if you can’t understand it that’s your problem but I am sure the viewers understand- or words to that effect.

Programme finishes by stating Andrew Robertson was ticked off by the Speaker for Chewing gum in the house of commons. My God.
The BBC are the lowest. NO HAND CLAPPING NOW

Brillo should be invited to Glasgow or refused the option of talking over, using the time delay when the person is being interviewed. He went to other party conferences.

Listened to Patricia Gibson MP at the House of Commons on Baby deaths. She was excellent.

Now the BBC talked on the 2016 Prosperity Index. Concentrated on England- https://lif.blob.core.windows.net/lif/docs/default-source/publications/2016-uk-prosperity-index-pdf.pdf?sfvrsn=6

As regard pricing the mantra has always been “…whatever the market will bear”

Prices are not lower in high population areas only because of turnover but also due to choice/options.
Devon and Orkney share this problem – take it or leave it.

We must also accept some of the responsibility. We enable Tesc etc to undercut the local shops UNTIL they are dominant. I’m probably being unfair to those on low incomes who need to look for the best price.
I don’t have the answer but cheap low quality food such as McDonalds and large Supermarket chains such as Tesco who dictate your choice of shops and products are a bad thing.

How do we get from ” ..whatever the market will bear” to fair pricing?

Add in the fact that the big corporations are now very political (Tesco union flags) and it becomes a much bigger issue.

Heh! Who is this, “Our”, you speak of, Legerwood?

Scotland has long been a net exporter of food, drink, power and fuel. Mainly, of course far too cheaply, to the rest of the United Kingdom.

To put that into proper context – it doesn’t mean that Scotland does not import food. It means that on balance we export a lot more of what we produce in Scotland than we need to import of the stuff Scots do not produce. So on balance our exports more than balance what we export.

Not only that but the way the United Kingdom calculates our Scottish export produce does not give the correct Scottish exports. The UK classes Scottish produce leaving the United Kingdom via English air and seaports as English exports.

Which calculation, obviously, increases the figures of England while decreasing the figures for Scotland.

Indeed, they said we were ‘better together’, we stayed ‘together’ and look, oh there’s a squirrel.

300+ years of this destructive, negative, wasteful, bullying union, and the unionists continue in their attempt to keep Scotland shackled by telling us we are just far too poor!

It won’t wash this time, not with the shambles that is brexit.
People will be weighing up their options, what’s best for their pockets. The no voters of 2014 are not daft about money, and it is clear that brexit is disastrous in economic terms.

If they really look at what the Scotgov are doing, in only a few short years, having been shackled for 300+, they can only come to one conclusion. That they want to live in a forward looking, modern, well governed country, not the backward, destructive, cruel dictatorship that is the UK.

No-one on an earlier thread addressed the contention that the prevailing political orthodoxy across the EU is essentially right-wing corporatism. “Common sense tells you that it costs more to transport a tin of beans…” From where dammit? FROM WHERE?

Exactly. Crosse & Blackwell used to make canned beans up here in Peterhead until Nestlé closed the factory. If distribution costs are high then move production closer to the market.

Asda opened a massive distribution centre in Grangemouth 3 or 4 years ago. Why Grangemouth? Presumably so they can bring in goods through the container port there. Not everything starts out inside the M25.

I used to be the grocery manager for a large supermarket in Scotland. I once spent the best part of a day on the phone to head office because they told me I had to order the locally produced beer from their central distribution centre in Warwickshire. A 700+ mile round trip, involving two ferry journeys, to get beer from the brewery a mile down the road that I could see from my office window. The brewery owner used to bring the deliveries in the back of his car when he came to do his shopping. Eventually they gave in, but cost didn’t figure in their thinking. (I clinched it with the environmental impact of the unnecessary journey. At the time the company had just won an award for the “greenest” supermarket and were trumpeting their environmental credentials for all they were worth.)
