Wings Over Scotland

Dredging the sewers

Posted on September 10, 2016 by

We’ve already highlighted the abominable state of the Daily Express this week, but an article in today’s edition is surely some sort of record-breaking low.

expressscumbollocks

Hold onto your hats, folks, you won’t believe this one.

mcfanny1

“Legislation to secure more uncertainty”. Wow.

mcfanny2a

We’re pretty sure that Nicola Sturgeon hasn’t “refused to accept the result of the democratic vote”. We’re reasonably certain that politics continued as normal and the SNP contested the 2015 Westminster election, with spectacular success.

But does anyone remember these “violent outbreaks”?

mcfanny3a

We’re having trouble recalling a single actual documented death threat. There were claims that there had been some, but to the best of our recollection nobody ever produced evidence of any. But “widespread outbreaks of violence”? If only we had some sort of official police statement about this.

guardianpolice

Just one day before the vote, the chairman of the Scottish Police Federation publicly and unequivocally rubbished the idea that the campaign had been a violent one:

scotpolindy

He went even further:

scotpolindy2

Oddly, the Express’s Siobhan McFadyen seems to have been reporting on an entirely different referendum to the one that Scotland’s police experienced.

mcfanny4a

She then hands over to Eben Wilson, the only known member of the self-styled “Taxpayer Scotland”, for a bewildering SNP BAD rant about how independence is all a fiendish scheme to rob the poor:

ebenwilson

Which is followed by the article’s high point:

mcfanny6

McFadyen has something of a history of aggressively false reporting. In May 2015 she published a piece in the Express claiming that SNP staff and others had received free Ryder Cup tickets.

mcfanny9

But it turned out that McFadyen had mistaken several completely different people with the same or similar names.

mcfanny7

On her errors being exposed, McFadyen’s response wasn’t to apologise, as innocently naive readers might imagine, but to go on the attack:

mcfanny8

The article now appears on the Express website with the references to Pringle and Martin crudely hacked out (leaving a grammatically nonsensical sentence behind), but with no correction, acknowledgement or apology.

myfanny9b

When McFadyen ran another article, this time about Labour MSP Anas Sarwar but illustrated with a picture of the SNP’s Humza Yousaf (presumably because they’re both brown men and that’s close enough for the readership of the Express), she was just as belligerent – rather than apologising for the crass mistake, she threatened to start investigating Yousaf’s expenses:

mcfanny10

And her earlier track record is no better:

mcfanny11

On being challenged about the outright lies in today’s article, McFadyen immediately started bleating about a “hate mob”:

mcfanny12

When people laughed at that, she even managed to twist a complaint that the Express article’s appalling and inflammatory tone might incite violence into a personal threat:

mcfanny13

mcfanny14

(There is, it probably goes without saying, not a solitary scrap of evidence we can find anywhere that anyone has ever threatened to shoot her.)

mcfanny15

She then claimed to have received over 300 hostile messages from over 200 people in the few minutes since people had found out about the article:

mcfanny16 mcfanny17

But a Twitter search in fact reveals just 69 tweets including McFadyen’s ID today (at time of writing), from only a handful of different users.

McFadyen is clearly fishing for abuse in order to write another “MY VILE CYBERNAT HELL” piece. We hope nobody delivers. But while there certainly is a “hate mob” in Scottish politics, most of it seems to exist inside the offices of the Daily Express.

The only violence through the referendum has been from the Britnat side. Same as in the EU referendum.

    LOL

It is a racing certainty that her awful confections of partisan nonsense and, frankly, appalling attempts at political journalism will not win her a Pulizter Prize. Does Siobhan write this stuff because she knows that there is market for reactionary bilge in the Express? It may put bread on the table but it lacks a tad on the ethics and integrity front.

On the plus side I can’t recall the last time I saw someone with the Express. Does anyone actually read it in Scotland? I think their horrible article regarding the children that survived Dunblane a few years ago pretty much put them beyond the pale. There really isn’t any place lower for them to go.

Tonight I am off out the pub. We are having an Indyref reunion. The mood is buoyant and we are going to chew the fat and look forward to how we play the next one…no pitched battles expected…unless there are still some old firm fans discussing the finer points of toilet redecoration…a conversation we won’t be joining.

The closest I’ve yet come to an “outbreak of violence and misery” over the independence question was last New Year.

I was the only Nat present. A trio of elderly, largely-housebound relatives raged for a full fifteen minutes about the idiocy of my opinions. Every ultra-unionist cliché was deployed. Too wee! Too poor! Too stupid! Cult! The oil’s running out! North Korea! Drinks were shoogled aggressively in my general direction.

A copy of the Daily Mail sat, accusingly, on the shelf beneath the coffee table.

Replace “Daily Mail” with “Daily Express” in this anecdote and the lesson remains the same: The chief target of London’s middle-brow tabloids is the aged and poorly-informed. It’s been quite a successful strategy so far…

Desperate, childish jibberish from whoever she is. The hate filled, anti Nicola Sturgeon wording that this nasty, lying rag has printed lately is very dangerous indeed and they really should be taken to court over incitement to violence against an individual.

Now, and during the independence referendum in 2014, these right wing rags want riots, hatred, violence, killings even, to happen in Scotland and they will even try to stoke up unrest, they must be livid that Scotland is a peaceful, modern, intelligent country, by and large.

Just off out to get my National, some of it is a bit wishy washy, but as the unionists round here always hide it under their tory rags, I still buy it most days. Will look to see if any of these extremist rags like the Express have sold today, usually not many even round here, thankfully.

Her almost casual incitement to disorder looks like bordering on illegality. My friends and family were split 60/40 in favour of Yes but it wasn’t uncivil at any time. Her laughable responses to moderate complaints would suggest this whole thing has been got up. Expect an Express article from her telling concerned pensioners of her living hell at the hands of merciless cybernats.
The murder of Labour MP Jo Cox was apparently committed by a raging british nationalist, the kind of person who might find plenty to agree with in the Express.

I can think of nothing the other way unless you count Murphy’s (remember him?) egging.

On Death threats the only ones I remember were to Jim Sillar’s wife Margo MacDonald, and to Nicola Sturgeon which involved the police and to a Yes canvasser in Kirrie. Claims in the other direction e.g. Susan Calman were AFAIK unsubstantiated.

So Rimmer gets taken to court for kicking a Yes supporter at a polling station, Alex Salmond has an attempt made on his life after a debate during the Ref campaign by a driver trying to drive his car off the road. On the 19th September a royalist UJ waving mob arrive at George Square setting off flares and actively chasing and attacking yes supporters around Glasgow city centre, the police have to bring in reinforcements to deal with the hi heil sieging mob, one of the worst night’s the city has experienced in decades. There is even an attempt to set fire to the Herald building in the city centre that night.

None of this is reported as coming from the No campaign’s supporters.

    No.

Every single door stepping paper, has fabricated stories about decent people who supported Yes having a political view and expressing those views on social media as ‘cybernats’ or part of an ‘army or hate mob’. Every single lying headline has accused the Yes supporter’s as the instigators of ‘violence’ and not one of them have splashed a headline of the actual stories of Yes supporters being attacked and hurt during the campaign.

It is abundantly clear that the language and actions of ‘reporter’s’ in Scotland are part of the problem in this regard. They have actively lied to the population about what is happening in our own country. They have instigated the ‘hate’ and are participating in denigrating our political discourse. They utilise the language of the gutter in bile soaked rhetoric to stir up the No supporters and we as a country are quite literally being led into very dangerous territory by these so called ‘journalist’s’.

This is not ‘journalism’, this is inflammatory and vile propaganda with one aim and that is to divide Scotland.

Let us not sink to ‘their’ level. They are called the ‘gutter press’ for a reason: They are the untreated sewage that is infusing the air with the stench of fear and hatred.

We are winning. That’s becoming very clear. Peg’s in noses and let them rot.

Unionists in Scotland HATE the country they live in, so why not fuck off out of Scotland, then those who actually care about our country can enjoy life without the hateful chains of unionism, as shown by rags like the express, and the disgusting morons who follow such media.

Was watching the last hour of ghandi this afternoon. Haven’t seen it in years but must watch it all the way through one day.
There was a scene where his advisors/friends are urging him to encourage a call to arms just before WW2 when the British will be vulnerable. He waves them off stating that India will be independent and by peaceful means. He intimates that the will of the British empire to rule over India is weakening anyway.

I think we see that here. The London empire, UK corporatocracy is destroying itself and the economy in its ignorance. It’s partisan media, sensing its demise, are whipping themselves into a froth.

Prior to the fall of the Roman Empire, the crowd pleasing violent games were escalated to keep the masses ignorant of the politics. The British empire celebrates the huge successes of its state funded Olympians, hoping in vein that it might reinstate some British patriotism.

A decade ago I was voting for the lib dems. How times have changed. Things have accelerated at quite a pace, yet progress isn’t linear – frustrating as that may be.
We aren’t far off but I can see people (including myself sometimes )compelled to lunge for the finish line. I’m also fairly sure that there are those high up In the YES movement, who like the great Mo Farah, who know exactly when the time is right to make the move.

At the risk of attracting the wrath of those in here who have been campaigning for independence for longer than I’ve had a pulse, I think we need to be patient, almost zen like and watch the opposition make an absolute mess of things. They are most certainly obliging.

For me, there doesn’t have to be a race to indyref 2 before brexit. The UK is shifting to the right; we will have another financial crisis, due to knowledge amongst the big banks that the UK tax payer will always step up to the plate. The UK govt have created a massive moral hazard, and our big banks are thus effectively part public companies knowing full well they will be the recipients of the biggest welfare bill in our history. Our young dont feel like they have a British identity.

Even outwith the EU, a country like ours with its huge export capability and its own sovereign currency will be welcomed into trade agreements given our inclusive approach.

A rush headlong in the short term to accept some of the EU’s neoliberal conventions might struggle to win support.

The highly partisan bias is a deliberate attempt to re-inforce readers pre-existing attitudes and behaviours but for most reasonable thinkers it has the opposite effect. Constant use of metaphors of war, fighting vocabulary, reference to parasites and other fear filled negative images is very typical of the manipulative effect that the press is trying to achieve on its readers but tells us more about the writer’s lack of ethical and political significance.

The FM is repeatedly portrayed as a pugilist constantly doing battle in a crusade to vanquish her foes. The YES supporters are an out of control mob that carry the virus of free-thinking that is causing the plague of independence. The campaign of fear and anxiety doesn’t reside in the YES movement (which is an actual thing and independent of the SNP), it resides in the minds of the editorial board and writers of these ludicrous headlines and disingenuous articles.

UKOK continues this theme of a contained and fearful electorate and declares that the politically educated citizens of Scotland ‘talk to the hand’ in order to suppress co-production of knowledge about the social and economic viability of Scotland’s autonomy. This might be acceptable if the printing press and social media hadn’t been invented.

To end their panic, fear and worry these authors should re-wire their anxious brains. It’s all to do with an area of the brain, the amygdala, that apparently controls the anxiety response. Once this is understood and neurological circuits are re-routed away from the amygdala, anxiety (a potent emotional response that occurs in the absence of a threat) is minimised and the affected individual can regain control, engage fully in normal life and will be able to write balanced and informative articles.

In protest, millionaire business man, Arron Banks, who led the LeaveEU campaign ahead of the referendum, paid £5,000 for the Union flags, which he hoped would be waved by patriotic Prommers at the event watched by millions around the world.

A spokesman for the BBC said: “Flags are a traditional part of the Last Night of the Proms and audience members are not prevented from bringing them into the Hall.”

So Kezias position and job is dependent on somebody elses money

So Kezias whole life has been paid for by her MUM and DAD, The Taxpayer, and rich people

So the whole Unionist dependency thing becomes clear now, she isn’t used to making decisions for herself and doesn’t know how to do it hence supporting every party leader Labour “elects” until the next one comes along

    I think there’s a word for that #bigwean

    1. Try to buy off the “rebel” leaders.
    2. Terrify the population of the occupied country.
    2. Stir up hatred and division across the land.
    3. Demonise the “rebels” with false accusations.
    4. Provoke the “rebels” into responding aggressively.
    5. Have your own undercover “rebel” agents act on their behalf.
    6. Threaten the “rebel” leaders.
    7. Start arresting the leaders on fake charges.
    8. Military clamp down.

Spot on. As Robert Peffers keeps informing us the enemy of the people are the Brirish Establishment (this includes the labour, conservative and Lib Dem parties) and how they all close ranks as they did in the Scots Indy ref to keep “their” Scotland. Unfortunately the majority of Scots fell for this.

Contrast this to the EU ref when all main establishment parties were split for either remain or leave.

Scotland is the last bastion of their “Imperial power” and needs to be held onto at all costs even to the detriment overall to all its people. Hence the “establishment” media onslaught as seen by the express etal.

How we make inroads into most of the people that voted no in our referendum that is our challenge going forward. Especially with the old “imperial empire” process of devide and rule being implemented on the Scottish people on daily basis.

There will be several high-profile speakers, including Alyn Smith MEP, Tommy Sheppard MP, Joanna Cherry QC MP, and Minister for International Development and Europe, Dr Alasdair Allan MSP. There will also be live music and community acts, and entertainment from former Makar, Liz Lochhead. There will also be an opportunity to ‘Meet the Artist’ with a stall from renowned Indy artist Stewart Bremner.

As well as food, beer and sales stalls, a language tent, Councillor’s Surgery, children’s activities and crafts, there will also be bands throughout the day, playing an eclectic Continental mix, and including an Open Air Dashing White Sergeant and Strip the Willow!

I’m convinced many journalists have either Compulsive or Pathological Lying Disorder.

The difference between Compulsive and Pathological is given here:

    https://blog.udemy.com/compulsive-lying-disorder/

    “What is Compulsive Lying Disorder?

Compulsive lying often develops when individuals are very young and heightens with age when more opportunities for fabrication are presented. Gradually throughout childhood and adolescence into adulthood, lying becomes more and more frequent, eliciting a sense of control in the affected individuals. They experience a sense of power over situations when they lie and become uneasy and uncomfortable when forced to tell the truth. Soon enough, dishonesty becomes habit, which then leads to classification in the compulsive lying disorder category.

Compulsive Lying Disorder is frequently confused with pathological lying, but it’s important to recognize the difference between the two. Compulsive liars engage in dishonesty because it is their automatic response to questions and situations, while pathological liars do so in order to manipulate other people and achieve their goals with complete disregard for the feelings of others. However, both compulsive and pathological lying is associated with antisocial personality disorder, more commonly known as “psychopathic behavior”.”

In journalism the main distinction between the two is that whereas a Pathological liar will follow the money or seek to manipulate opinion for some other rational, if unethical, reason by lying, the CLD sufferer will seek to change what they believe public opinion is just for the power rush they seek.

One of the more obvious areas of journalism where this can be spotted is in that of the critic, where for some critics you know that if something is demonstrably popular e.g. ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ say, they will declare they hate it and tear it to pieces.

Desmond gave £1,300,000 plus to Farague to try and influence the political system for favours and thwart Democracy, and destroy the world economy. FORMER Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy has been having cosy political chats with senior members of the Conservative government, the Sunday Herald can reveal.

The arch-Blairite has held meetings with Scottish Secretary David Mundell and his Scotland Office deputy, Lord Andrew Dunlop.
Murphy said he “wanted to catch up privately about a couple of political issues” with the Tories.

Like so much UK wide programming it can be totally dominated by English domestic issues. Then, it is completely irrelevant to anyone outside England. When Question Time comes from deepest England, and there is no SNP representation, it too discusses irrevant issues. The main news bulletins are no better. Northern Ireland must feel the same way.

The real solution is of course Indy. However, it would help meantime if English output, about England, was kept to England. We have BBC Scotland, the concept of BBC England just hasn’t been considered.

Truth is, it’s all part of the wider England = UK perception.

Been reading the dodgy Sunday Herald again. Trying to work out where it is. I think I’ve cracked it. It supports Independence but not the SNP. Impossible to reconcile those positions, of course, but our very clever hitch hikers and band wagon jumpers manage to do so to themselves. These are the guys who managed just under 1% at the election but probably cost SNP list seats and a majority.

The editor kinda gives the game away in his editorial today . There are still people who shout we need to be more left wing and more radical to win independence when it is a clear as the wart on my nose that it is the non left and rightwing vote that defeats us that we need to make inroads into.

Kezia and Ruth are interesting topics at the moment . The front page of the Sunday Herald is very telling. It is in fact the assassination of Kezia Dugdale. To order. This is not Tom Gordon assisting the SNP. This is unionist hack Gordon doing the establishments bidding. Kezia is finally being put down. She was abandoned well over a year ago by the establishment as the canvas for Ruth got under way. But Kezia is now an embarrassment for the union and has to go.

Gordon’s only other contribution to the paper is an article attacking Andrew Wilson which is notable only in its absolute lack of any substance.

Ruth is a more interesting examination. I cannot remember any statement made or position taken of any political consequence from Ruth but she continues to enjoy a ridiculously generous press. She is leading “resurgent “ Tory party whose vote has actually dropped at recent council by elections and whose rating in opinions polls has slipped slightly to the giddy heights of 20%.

The insult to the intelligence of the Scottish electorate is actually becoming breathtaking.

There are significant movements going on. It is entirely possible that the independence camp has lost some of its more impressionable support interim. This happens all the time. But any loss is being more than compensated by an infusion of the seriously well informed into the movement.

But with Ruth we are in the early stages of the sort of deification that attended the elevation of Joann Lamont and more ridiculously Jim Murphy. It goes like this. Unbridled access to press and media coverage. Smiley photos. Inane political comment treated with reverence. Then pushed a bit harder when it doesn’t seem to be working. No evident reaction from the public. Pushed a bit again. Somebody at the back of the class laughs. The facade cracks and the edifice crumbles. Rapid execution and removal. And here we go again with some other figure that suddenly becomes the best thing for Labour/Tory since sliced bread. Ruth’s on borrowed time – as is the union. I’ll give her 6 months.

She would privatise health, charge tuition fees, slash services and give tax breaks to the rich.

On arrival on any oil rig in the north sea,the first thing that happens,is the safety discussion, the site manager (OIM),will run through the ongoing activities and they then, deliver one message, that is,above all else….safety.

Do your job,do it safely, you arrive on ‘here’ in good health,we would like to keep it that way and we want to deliver you back to your family,in the same condition as you arrived, remember, safety first,at all times.

These are reassuring words,in a very harsh, sometimes brutal, unforgiving workplace and they are effective, anyone found putting themselves or anyone else, for that matter,in any danger,is immediately removed from their worksite and will find themselves travelling, not on a slow boat to China, but rather quickly,on a fast boat or chopper, back from whence they came, most likely, never to return.

I see no such safety measures in place,in (certain?)newspapers,a slapdash approach to ‘news stories’ seems to be the ‘given’ and then,on receiving negative feedback,it seems the ‘hack victim’ card is played….look, look at me,it’s an injustice (rinse and repeat).

As an industry, you have to wonder….who, would endanger their own reputation, their fellow workers or anyone else’s for that matter,by not doing their job properly, checking the facts, writing the truth ?.

In any other industry, they would ‘run off’,co-workers would complain, management would insist on maintaining the highest standards,in most of today’s working environments, there is no room for the slap dash approach,(whether it is dredging in the sewers, the building of walls or the penning of a news article) we all know, there are good journalist out there, but declining sales are putting even their jobs in danger.

Every job has it’s risks, that’s why control measures (not the grammar police, but editors) are put in place,as sometimes, people even need to be protected from themselves,(medical’s anyone ?) crucially, people need to take personal responsibility for the own actions….’hacks’ welcome to the modern, fast moving real world, buckle up tight and remember, look out for each other and to look out for us,(treat your readers as family members, not just, members).
