It wasn’t so long ago that Fraser Nelson’s lovely aunt crossed over to the correct side of the debate. Now another member of the clan has joined her…

More and more often we’re seeing dyed-in-the-wool unionists adopting pro-independence stances. I’ve personally witnessed several conversions in folk who I’d assumed would depart this world in union-jack-draped coffin.

Cue much ingwush and tawtyahed voles from Fraser in the London media…

what a great, thoughtful guy, who seems to have arrived at Yes by observation and assessment of the various players and arguments. Its good to see people doing that.

O/T those polls showing the Tory lead narrowing to 5-6%, you might think they would be big news – but tucked away on the BBC website under GE2017, sub-heading polls. So three layers down and you have to go looking.

Its become actually pointless going there to find out what the news is.

    Have to echo Thepnr’s comments.

I’m young-ish (35 in November) and out of my close circle of pals, 9 were Yes and 2 No (one didn’t vote though).

Both No voters are Yes now. One was an ideological Socialist ”don’t believe in country’s breaking up”etc then Brexit happened and he woke up a bit. We all tried to warn him about broken promises etc, but still at least he’s with us all now.

The second guy is non-political. He tries to avoid politics, and was a soft No, but he was annoyed at the broken promises and he also went to Denmark just after Indyref and noticed how a small country was healthy, modern, and thriving whilst Scotland isn’t exactly doing that. He’s even registered to vote! Although he seems to be tempted by Labour – due to Corbyn – it won’t make a difference in our constituency, Dundee East will be won by the SNP anyways, he says he’s 100% Yes in the next Scotref.

Whilst we may well lose people who voted Yes thanks to Brexit etc, we certainly have gained more than lost since Indyref e.g you can see it with the likes of Pia, Joyce, Chisholm who may never vote SNP in the near future but they will most certainly vote Yes in the next referendum.

Like a few folk have said on here, why are the Tories shouting about Indyref2? Because whilst they can make modest political gain in the short with it from hardcore No/OAP/orange/white-settler raging voters and so on ; they will lose the next referendum.

It’s quite similar to the DUP in Northern Ireland who all backed Brexit etc, and whilst they can wave their Union flags etc. They will be the masters of their own downfall similar to the Tories. Thanks to Brexit, a United Ireland and a Scottish state now look inevitable and especially with Ireland, most of it will have been brought on by the Unionists being absolute gobshites.

So whilst the Tories had their day in the sun in Holyrood 2016 elections, and became the opposition. They also did alright by their standards in the council election.

They will lose in the long run.

I think this series of videos are great, but then as a Yes supporter I would think that. There real benefit though comes when YOU show them to those that previously voted No for whatever reason.

I’ve done it and it works, certainly makes them think. Don’t go overboard with it though would be my advice 2 or 3 is enough at any one time. Seriously you don’t want to make them feel sick about how they voted first time around.

So if given an oppertunity to show them with family or friends then just do it, the videos could be a great tool to win over more No voters to the Yes side. Be careful though not to overdo it, might just push them further away.

Good luck guys and gals, we can do this let’s just keep plodding on 🙂

That is the Opinium one which I think is usually in the Observer. So likely out tomorrow. It is just a subset of a UK poll.

There is a less favourable ComRes poll subset with SNP on 40% and Tories 35% but I see someone saying the tables for that one suggest a very skewed pick with recalled votes for 2015 showing SNP 39% Tories 20%, which renders it a tad suspect. I think the polls are trying to avoid shy Tories but that is taking things way too far.

    @ Thepnr

I had a look at the Edinburgh South results over the last 3 general elections the other day, and thought it wasn’t as clear-cut as I had believed.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_South_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s)

Nigel Griffiths had a hefty majority, but when he stood down (under rather a cloud) in 2010, Murray only just scraped in ahead of the LibDem. Friends of mine in the constituency thought he was expecting to lose.

Two years ago, the LibDems plummeted from second to fifth, behind even the Greens, and Murray substantially increased his majority. Despite this, it was seen as a close shave because of the SNP surge.

But looking at the Tory figures, they haven’t really changed that much; turnout has been similar since the 2005 boundary changes and is quite high. So how real was the “tactical vote”? Did former Tories vote Labour (which can be expected to evaporate) while ex-Labour went SNP? Where did 13,000 LibDem votes go? Did they keep the Tories roughly stable?

I am obvously hoping the SNP either squeeze through the gap or do well enough to win regardless of unionist churn, but I’d really not want to make a prediction!

I know this is wishful thinking and that I shouldn’t bother myself looking at the tables produced by pollsters. Can’t really help myself though as I need a political fix.

Call it an obsession I don’t mind.

Here’s my take on it for what it’s worth. Turnout in this election will be higher in Scotland than anywhere else in the UK that will help the SNP.

A good many of those still planning to vote Labour may change their mind at the last minute realising that voting SNP is the only way to keep the Tories out in their particular constituency.

I believe that many who would have supported the Greens will instead give their support to the SNP where they are not standing.

I’m sticking by my view of the SNP getting 54 seats and Labour losing their last remaining MP. We can’t ignore the significance of that if it came to pass.

Just over 11 days to go, the Ruth Davidson party has to go. If you live in any seat that they can possibly win then I would urge you to go volunteer to help the SNP defeat them.

Defeat them we must, I don’t really wish to live in a fascist state which is all that is on offer from Theresa May.

Stu has already covered the Katie Grant phenomenon in 2015 (yes that long ago):

“Katharine Mary (“KM”) Grant, better known as Katie, is a children’s author who pops up curiously often on Scottish TV and radio shows as a pundit by dint of occasionally penning opinion pieces for the Scottish Daily Mail. She’s a descendant of William The Conqueror, via her parents Sir Simon Towneley and Lady Mary Fitzherbert, and niece to the journalist Sir Peregrine Worsthorne.

Today she has a column in CapX, an almost comically right-wing blog set up in 2014 by the Centre for Policy Studies thinktank (co-founded by Margaret Thatcher), edited by Iain Martin of the Daily Telegraph and regularly featuring other contributors from the batshit end of the Scottish Tory commentariat like Chris Deerin, Bruce Anderson and Gerald Warner, as well as some very well-connected Conservative luminaries.

Unimaginatively entitled “Scotland is a one-party state”, the column rails dementedly in a manner only the privileged and entitled elite (to which Grant has belonged since birth) can when the filthy proletariat get above themselves and refuse to elect who they’re told to.”

David I completely agree. What annoys me the most is those no voters that were shocked when the tories got into power and the evil policies that transpired. Truly sickening when it was in our hands to end Tory rule for infinity. Hell mend them.

I think I am being stalked by YouGov.

Although I have been a member of their panel for ages it is years since I have been asked to take part in their political surveys.

I recently commented on the fact that that they had asked me for my voting intentions 3 times in 3 days.

Imagine my surprise this morning when they asked me yet again in a survey that seems to be very interested in Scotland.

Great car crash interview by Peston of that incompetent buffoon Fallon.

He continued the vile attack on Corbyn’s recent speech re terrorism.

I find it incredible that Fallon, the rest of the Tories together with their media fan club think that the public are stupid enough to believe that UK foreign policy has nothing to do with terrorist attacks in this country.

I recently commented that when the knives are planted in the back of the Incredible Wiibly Wobbly Giraffe Woman that my money would be on Amber Rudd as her replacement.

Rudd had a very impressive interview with Andrew Marr this morning – answered all the questions without hesitation and May type woffling – although I hate the Tories she is one to watch. I remeber also her demolition of Boris in last year’s referendum debate.

Ruthie at least answered the question, but, she clearly believes, getting your manifesto proposal to hold a second independence referendum passed by a majority of the Scottish Parliament, is not a mandate. Doh!

“Kezia blocking council deals with the Tories” says Ruth. Aye Right.

To be fair, Ruth did better than Kezia, but, she had an easier ride.

BUT – BBC balance on open show. No Lib-Dems, Greens or most-crucially SNP presence. Although, to be fair (should we be fair to BBC Scotland?), Nicola does get half an hour with the Paisley Panda tonight.

I agree with most of what James said, but don’t agree with him on immigration. When I was born in the early 1970’s, there were around 3.7 Billion people on the planet… there are now around 7.5 Billion. Thats 2 people for every 1 when I arrived. Those people need to live somewhere and Scotlands population has not increased much in that time at around the 5 million mark.

In order to defeat terrorism the Tories have devised a new strategy which is To Promote British Values

Is that not more likely to make terrorists even more angry?
I’m not even a terrorist and I’m angry already just listening to the stupidity of it

But then again I’m an extremist

May has to recognise that the Manchester outrage happened under her and the Tories so called watch.

Austerity cuts she supported with Osborne and Cameron. Less police in England, smaller conventional forces across the army, navy and RAF . Pro nuclear missiles which cannot be used.

All under the Tories. Private security companies on the increase to chase the poor and the infirm.

Davidsons tory party are part of the problem.

Amber Rudd – One to watch ! , Aye right , I suggest you watch her antics again, there has been a succession of Tory Party mouthpieces on TV this morning, every one of them when the surface is scratched it becomes obvious , they ain’t quite as bright as they first appear,
Ruth when pushed , as she was a few times this morning by brewer is all over the place on so many things, I believe it would be very easy to tip her over the edge, she’s like a wee volcano just waiting to blow, as for Kezia oh well as confused as ever doesn’t seem to understand her manifesto is as valid as mine or indeed as relevant as Davidsons . Both these parties manifestos are just a means of promoting the Union , it’s their masters down south that call the shots , as is Kezia going on about federalism just so much talk , it won’t fly and she knows it , This is where the BBC are letting the public down by allowing these two airtime to talk utter irrelevant pish and trying to give them some semblance of autonomy from London . Oh well the Unionists at play on their TV Station, same guff different day .
