Wings Over Scotland

The House Scot and the Field Scot

Posted on January 13, 2018 by

An alert reader this weekend linked us to a 1963 speech by the famed American civil rights and racial equality campaigner Malcolm X.

We’d never heard of it before, which is probably to our shame, but as we read it we were overcome by an inexplicable sense of incredible familiarity.

We present it to you below for your interest, without further comment or editing, but we’ve included a few pictures just to break up the block of text.

So you have two types of Negro. The old type and the new type. Most of you know the old type. When you read about him in history during slavery he was called “Uncle Tom.” He was the house Negro. And during slavery you had two Negroes. You had the house Negro and the field Negro.

The house Negro usually lived close to his master. He dressed like his master. He wore his master’s second-hand clothes. He ate food that his master left on the table. And he lived in his master’s house – probably in the basement or the attic, but he still lived in the master’s house.

So whenever that house Negro identified himself, he always identified himself in the same sense that his master identified himself. When his master said, “We have good food,” the house Negro would say, “Yes, we have plenty of good food.” “We” have plenty of good food.

When the master said that “we have a fine home here,” the house Negro said, “Yes, we have a fine home here.”

When the master would be sick, the house Negro identified himself so much with his master he’d say, “What’s the matter boss, we sick?” His master’s pain was his pain. And it hurt him more for his master to be sick than for him to be sick himself.

When the house started burning down, that type of Negro would fight harder to put the master’s house out than the master himself would.

But then you had another Negro out in the field. The house Negro was in the minority. The masses – the field Negroes were the masses. They were in the majority. When the master got sick, they prayed that he’d die. If his house caught on fire, they’d pray for a wind to come along and fan the breeze.

If someone came to the house Negro and said, “Let’s go, let’s separate,” naturally that Uncle Tom would say, “Go where? What could I do without boss? Where would I live? How would I dress? Who would look out for me?”

That’s the house Negro. But if you went to the field Negro and said, “Let’s go, let’s separate,” he wouldn’t even ask you where or how. He’d say, “Yes, let’s go.” And that one ended right there.

So now you have a twentieth-century-type of house Negro. A twentieth-century Uncle Tom. He’s just as much an Uncle Tom today as Uncle Tom was 100 and 200 years ago. Only he’s a modern Uncle Tom.

That Uncle Tom wore a handkerchief around his head. This Uncle Tom wears a top hat. He’s sharp. He dresses just like you do. He speaks the same phraseology, the same language. He tries to speak it better than you do.

He speaks with the same accents, same diction. And when you say, “your army,” he says, “our army.” He hasn’t got anybody to defend him, but anytime you say “we” he says “we.” “Our president,” “our government,” “our Senate,” “our congressmen,” “our this and our that.”

And he hasn’t even got a seat in that “our” even at the end of the line.

So this is the twentieth-century Negro. Whenever you say “you,” the personal pronoun in the singular or in the plural, he uses it right along with you. When you say you’re in trouble, he says, “Yes, we’re in trouble.”

But there’s another kind of black man on the scene. If you say you’re in trouble, he says, “Yes, you’re in trouble.”

He doesn’t identify himself with your plight whatsoever.

Yeah, we think we see what you’re getting at, Malc.

Malcolm X is much more complicated than being a Civil Rights Campaigner. He was making much more radical claims in 1963 than the claims for civil rights. At that stage he was still involved in the Nation of Islam, an American Black supremacist group, rather than a body looking for either Equality, or even Affirmative action.
The only reason I can write this is that I am old enough to remember the time and how Malcolm X responded to the Assassination of Kennedy.
Having said this, it is well for us to remember that there are through the Unionists movement in both Scotland and Ireland those who really wish to be English – an example this week is the Arch Unionists in Northern Ireland, John Taylor (now Lord Kilclooney) making very racist comments from an English point of view. The problem is that while it would be pleasing to describe some of the Unionists as Uncle Toms, the use to the term would give more problems and provide more opportunities for negative headlines than would be solved.
There is no point in calling names for the sake of it.

Cause of a US background I felt such comparisons were always valid. Its to do with peoples rights to emancipation in all areas. As this sorry mess of a UK stands some of us will always be ‘more equal’ than others. Some of us will side with the oppressors as pointed out. I’ve been linking these subjects for ages to friends & felt I couldn’t raise this as I’d get slammed.
There are degrees of course, but we still are experiencing oppression, its just the more equal among us don’t mind so much.

Thanks for this Rev best article in ages IMO.

I knew of the speech and it is indeed an interesting compare and contrast.

One thing that strikes me about the Blare McDougall tweet, everything is about money. Whether we like it or not, threat of penury cuts through. I have no concept of why that is, because the country is circling the drain, and will hit us all in same way.

I think there is a breaking point coming now, and its money based. If inflation continues, and I believe it will, those Scots that can be open to persuasion, have to take a decision.

Do I remain with the UK, who is well holed below the waterline, or do I start paying attention to how well run Scotland is in comparison, and the potential with independence?

When things are SO demented, desperate in the South, those who took the ‘I’m alright, Jack, don’t rock the boat’ view, might just have to start doing compare and contrast of their own.

I’ve noticed SiU’s second lieutenant, HappyMealBritScot Cameron,
often says something like ‘forget referndums, forget independence, let’s get on with dealing with the real problems that affect Scotland’ etc. etc…let’s i.e. let us.
The real problems of his class will be the threat of further land reform, a proper register of land ownership, the threat of govt. to offshore interests, stricter bank regulation…in other words…he and his class fear regulation whereas for most Scots it is only regulation that stops the feral rich from enslaving them and we all know that if they could enslave us they would.
The SiU types will want an independent Scotland to fail and they will work towards its failure. If and when we do well as an independent country the Call of the Home Counties will be irresistible.

What a great piece, Rev. It kind of sums up the situation here in Scotland at the moment.

I live amongst folk who dress, work and play like the Aristocracy. They wish to be them. Put themselves into debt to try to be like them. Even some members of my family assume this role.

If it hadn’t been for my father teaching me about Wallace and Bruce and some history of Scotland and instilling some pride in me for my country, Scotland, I might have thought that being Anglicized upper class was something that I should work hard to achieve. At school, they made that clear. That was the goal for working class kids.

Very few of these “gentrified” people were taught Scottish history at school. They want us Scots to be part of England and they feel part of England. Some of them are English but not all. They will never vote for Scottish Independence unless Brexit hits their pockets.

Their job is too keep the masses, the field Negroes as Malcolm X put it, in an ignorant and misinformed condition. They are very adept at it having had hundreds of years to perfect it.
At the end of the day, I suppose that change will only come when enough of these masses see the deception for what it is, and realise that their future and that of their children’s lies in an Independent Scotland free from the influence of their masters house.

Watched ‘Gone With The Wind’ in our all white house with three kids home from uni and all under 25. They had never watched this film before. They were astonished and horrified at the casual racism and white propagandist re-writing of the American Civil War and slavery as a benign and civilising regime; for the blacks own good, who were definitely too poor and too stupid to look after themselves.

I had not watched this film for over a decade but I wondered why I had not been previously appalled at this film’s cultural revisionist portrayal of history, especially the blatant primitive caricaturing of all of the black actors.

One sees that same revisionist story telling of British culture as a benign global influence. When did you last watch a BBC programme on the systematic extinction of aboriginal Tasmanians by the British? Or the British concentration camps of women and children starved to death in the Boer War? Or the Irish Famine millions? The Irish in question then being ‘British’. Or the treatment of Indians in their own country during the British Raj, not allowed to walk on the main streets, the Amritsar Massacre?

But back to ‘Gone With The Wind’. It’s worst example of casual racism actually caused outbursts of shocked disbelief from my family’s young, white, Scots viewers. Ex-Confederate army officer, Cpt Ashley, muses wistfully to Scarlet, that what he misses most from the pre-war days are the quiet evenings when all one heard was the soft laughter from the ‘negro quarters’.

It reminded me that all the British Nationalist yoons want to do is go back to the days of our own Scots Uncle Tams, when we could be portrayed casually as being too wee, too poor and too stupid and usually also too mean and too drunk.

“Their job is too keep the masses, the field Negroes as Malcolm X put it, in an ignorant and misinformed condition. They are very adept at it having had hundreds of years to perfect it.”

Nah! This is where the those taught our real history, and not the parcel of lies that stems from the Westminster Establishment, teaches that they have had a minimum of at least 2,073 years experience.

The Romans came in 55/54BC and became a south eastern based elite ruling class in Britain. The Romans built Londinium and established a customs & Excise system very much like we have today. After several hundred years when Rome ruled south Britain only the Romans left south Britain and Londinium.

Only to be replaced, (by the south Britain Uncle Thomas’), by the invited into south Britain Anglo Saxon, (Germanic), tribes. Who soon assumed the elite ruling class mantle left vacant by the Romans. The South Britain Uncle Thomas’s were delighted to have them as their masters.

These Germanic Tribes, (actually NOT from what we know as modern Germany but more from the Scandinavian areas of Europe. Began a series of such Germanic tribes ending with the Normans, (Norman is a corruption of Norsemen), and it was these that gave us the feudal system of masters and slaves, (serfs or villeins), that we still have today.

The Royals are Germanic as are the hereditary peers who still sit in the House of Lords today. Thing is although the Normans did become rulers and monarchs in Scotland there was never a Norman Conquest in Scotland as happened in what became England, (Angleland), Wales and Ireland. In Scotland the Norman’s integrated and were absorbed by the Northern Britons who had become the Scots. This occurred by marriage. Note that Robert Bruce’s father he was distantly related to the Scottish royal family and his mother had Gaelic antecedents.

So the historic truth is that south Britons have been, “House Slaves”, to an unbroken succession of elite rules from around 55BC until the present day while the Scots were conned into a union with the south a mere 311 yeas age.

Now while the British gene pool is fairly standard and most certainly NOT either Anglo Saxon or Celtic in origin but from Stone Age Britons there is a most definite cultural difference in Scotland where the northern Britons were never subjugated by anyone until after the Treaty of Union and that was a slowly Westminster/Londinium progression that seems now to be getting increasingly fought against by the modern Scots.

    Roll on Indyref2.

“At the end of the day, I suppose that change will only come when enough of these masses see the deception for what it is, and realise that their future and that of their children’s lies in an Independent Scotland free from the influence of their masters house.
If the latest polls are accurate, then it’s a only a heartbeat away.”

Now that last bit certainly seems to better fit our real history that is unsullied by Westminster propaganda.

Indeed. And it’s just not the Anglicised. In IndyRef1 I have no doubt that many who felt Scottish-first voted NO with a heavy heart because they genuinely felt that this was the ‘safe’ option for their families.

For IndyRef2 we must portray Brexit UK as the risky insecure option while iScotland closely associated with the EU is the safest future.

Scottish-first folks will have no excuse for voting anything but YES.

Among the British-first folks, proud-buts, Anglicised Scots, etc will be some who put financial status before their nationalism. We don’t need many to switch.

The Tories are doing their damnest to deliver that for us!

One of the key achievements of the SNP has to be that Scotland increasingly views Holyrood as the seat of power, not Westminster. ’twas definitely not so under McConnell. Keeping Holyrood as far removed from a comparison to late C19/early C20 Dublin Castle is going to be tough post-Smith.

Hey Rab, how old is England anyway? Did someone just say, this is England now? It could have gone either way too, it was almost cut in half by the Vikings, until Harold defeated that at Stamford?

    Was it there and then?

The start of England is not something you ever hear, in the UK, “where and when was England called England?”

Maybe its just part of the tory mindset, in that, origins of power held in the UK must never be questioned, a permanence and divine right, like the union with their Scotland region?

If something has a beginning, it also has an end?

This is not uncommon, in English history stories.

    On last night,

“Paul Seabright, economist and author, presents an omnibus edition of his investigation into our trading past. In part one, he explores the very earliest history of trade; he looks at the connections that war and disease have with trade; and he asks whether distance still matters in trade as much in the digital age as it did when goods were transported by donkey.”

Its nae bad, as histories go but there is no mention whatsoever of the UK slave trade, maybe next show, but why would he not give a mention to the fact that the British Empire was the biggest slave empire planet Earth has ever seen?

Or that 18th century UK was transformed and enriched immeasurably by the vast Brit empire slave profit, transformed from essentially a minor and poor parochial monarchic offshore Europe state, to what we can see today in all the vast neo classical landed gentry estates, country seats, palaces, slaver cities like London, Bristol, Liverpool, Glasgow etc.

And then all that slave trade profit providing a tiny UK elite with the required capital for the UK Victorian industrial revolution. Because actually sharing it with the UK masses was not the way at all, and what’s changed in the UKOK zone today?

Being 50+ I sometimes wonder if younger Scots appreciate how racist this country is. Youtube is a fantastic resource for illustrating the attitudes many of us were brought-up believing to be ‘normal’.

For example, there used to be a telly programme called The Comedians. I don’t know if it has a modern equivalent but it was hugely popular in the 70s, probably at its peak when it starred characters like Bernard Manning, Stan Boardman, Frank Carson. You get the picture, but only when you revisit the archive material do you end up having to watch through your fingers – it’s truly appalling. ‘So, there’s these thick paddies, darkies, pakis’ etc etc etc

Those attitudes haven’t vanished. We saw it in the House of Commons with that repulsive Tory citing Cromwell’s slavery of Scots as part of an unfunny joke. We see it in Bozza Johnson every other time he opens his mouth. We see it in the so-called ‘royal’ family despite mighty efforts to make them fit for some unknown purpose. And it’s not just WM Tories. The elderly woman who works in my corner shop experiences verbal abuse regularly. It’s everywhere.

The same characters who attacked Yessers on Sep 19th 2014 are watching their beloved empire come apart – the same methodology which built that empire will be used to try and preserve it, and racism is a major element of it. They know no other way.

I personally doubt Malcolm X would have much sympathy for Scotland. Not from any racist perspective, but merely because the hurdles and risks we face in Scotland over political emancipation from the UK would be dwarfed by the grievously more unjust, hateful, and life threateningly dangerous circumstances suffered for centuries by his own people.

But setting aside Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, both of whom would be assassinated, for me personally, the most gut wrenching episode, the one that makes me cringe as a white person, is the image and pristine dignity of Dorothy Counts, the first black American student to attend her local High School, being barracked and ridiculed by jeering whites.
The picture that springs to mind whenever somebody mentions American civil rights isn’t Martin LK or Malcom X. It isn’t even the riots, killings, the KKK, or the burning crosses and lynchings. It’s the extraordinary dignity of Dorothy Counts going to school. It was 1956, she was 15 years old, ridiculed, spat on, insulted, taunted, but held her head high and kept her dignity throughout. She put up with it for 4 days before her father stepped in, and Dorothy went to a different school. But in 2008, 52 years later, (and as far as I know Dorothy is still alive) the All white school which Dorothy attended renamed its library in her honour.

I wonder if 50 or 60 years from now, people will be quoting Scotland’s YES and SNP Independence rhetoric with the same profound reverence as we have for Malcolm X, or be remarking on the tremendous dignity of our own Dorothy Counts… Makes you realise that perhaps we’re missing our own Malcolm X type lightning conductor and Dorothy Counts dignity from our own freedom campaign for Scotland.

We were definitely getting there in 2014. That wee lass standing with the saltire beside the two neds with Union Jacks was an awesome picture… We need a lot more of that.

If we win, and do it peacefully, then there is a chance it can, and will, be a beacon to other Nations, but I feel right now we need a big dose of inspiration added to our aspirations.

Indeed so, Fred, but try telling that to some Wingers and you are banging your head on a brick wall. A dig near the Northumbrian village of Howick found Neolithic remains and a subsequent genetic survey around the area discovered a woman who was a direct descendent of remains from the Howick dig.

Almost unbelievably this woman’s family had lived in the same area since Neolithic times. In fact the earliest Britons are proven to have lived on what we now call Doggerland. This is now the area of the Dagger Bank under the North Sea.

In Neolithic times that low lying area slowly flooded and the inhabitants moved to the nearest high ground – what we now call Britain. But read up thread and we have claims we are al of Celtic descent. In fact there really is little Celtic Blood in our Gene pool. The early North Britons adopted the Celtic language and culture from the early Christian saints just as the more southerly Britons adopted the Anglo Saxon languages and cultures but there is less than 5% actual Anglo Saxon blood in their gene pool and guess in what strata of the modern British gene pool they are mainly found in?

Yep! The royals and the aristocracy.

    On Slavery
In the 17th century the City fathers of Edinburgh were exporting beggars and vagabonds to Virginia because they were “not fit to stay in the kingdom”. They were seen as a commodity, bought and sold like tobacco or firewood.

In the 18th century, in Aberdeenshire, there was the practice of kidnapping, or stealing children from their parents, and selling them for slaves to the planters of Maryland, Virginia, &c. In North America. One of these children, Peter Williamson, or Indian Peter, survived to return to Scotland and successfully sue the Aberdonians responsible. You will find his tale on the Internet.

I did watch the movie (or one of them) more than once, and very impressive it was. I don’t normally like this sort of comparison, it’s almost an insult to our own people, whose hearts and minds we want to win.

The problem is though that the reverse of this really does still exist, and I’ve been the victim or attempted victim of two or three of these recently, on the forums.

It’s the “master” syndrome. As long as we conform, do what we’re suppsoed to, say what we’re supposed to, then we are accepted. We’re OK even if we are Jocks. But try to claim we too can be masters in our own right, even if just of our destiny and resources then it’s a case of “Oh no you can’t, you’re not capable”. Or even the equivalent of “shut up and eat your porridge”.

This is something we see all the time with the SNP MPs, and it made no difference whether there were 6 or 56. Say something they shouldn’t and they were – and the 35 – are – treated with hoots of derision and “woof woof”, with not even a cheep or bleat from the speaker.

The Conservative, Labour and LibDems are treated with more respect in that supposed seat of government of the “United” Kingdom, but woe betide them – the house slaves – of they speak out of line. Suggest a better way of polishing the brass bedknobs, and they are welcome, and even given VAT relief to keep the field slaves happy. They do this through the house slave master who is allowed to consult on how to keep the rest in order.

But if they were to suggest anything that doesn’t fit the plans of the resident EVEL. then they would be doomed to the same treatment as the obnoxious, pathetic and franky revolting Nats.

Most ordinary people down ther are normal punters like us. But there are wannabe Masters amongst them, and I’ve come aross a few in my time.

Story in today’s Telegraph that 1000 care homes have closed in England. They cared for 30,000 elderly residents. More delayed discharges.

Be aware that on Tuesday 16th January ISD is due to release its latest report on delayed discharges in Scotland.

Taken together with the story about Bield and the situation down south be prepared for an onslaught of stories about ‘bed blocking’ in Scotland on Tuesday with front page headlines on Wednesday. The weekly A&E figures will be released on Tuesday as well and I think a report on Dentists.

As far as delayed discharges in Scotland are concerned the new integrated health and social care system went live in April 2016. Figures from ISD showed that in 2016/17 there was a 3% decrease in delayed discharges compared to 2015/16.

From October 2016 through into 2017 there has been a steady but gradual decrease in the beds blocked because of delayed discharges.

There was a slight increase in October 2017 but the figure was still 11% BELOW the October 2016 figure.

The figures are released monthly so not sure if the release on Tuesday next week will be for November or December but it is may show an increase in delayed discharges which might not be unexpected in winter time.

I find myself wondering about the difference. I wonder how much of the “house” negro came from within the person themselves, or whether it was frightened, beaten, intimidated into them by their white slave master. And by the same token, what factors determined a person would be a field negro? Was it possible to transform a house negro into a field negro, and vice versa, and what would it take to achieve it?

It’s easy to condemn some character weakness in the house negro, but what if the deciding factor of being in the house simply meant fewer physical beatings, punishment in chains, or an escape from absolute squalor? Aren’t we guilty of condemning the wrong people here? Its the slavemaster and his odious practices who surely deserves the condemnation, – not the narrow window of chance some slaves had to marginally improve their desperate circumstances.

In specific terms as they relate to Scotland, what is it that creates a “house” Scot rather than a field Scot? Because the implication is that Independence for Scotland won at the ballot means having fewer “house” Scots, and more “field” Scots, and if that’s right, then how do we bring it about?

How do you become a “house” Scot? Is it the wealth and privilege you are born to? Maybe. But only for the AstroTurf minority I suspect. Is there an element of established convention and fear of change? Maybe.

Is it a lifetime of disinformation and thought manipulation? Ah. Now then! I would say yes, yes, definitely. – Furthermore it is deliberate, well understood and orchestrated manipulation.

Conspiracy theory! The propagandists will cry to discredit and divert criticism. But do you remember Tony Benn’s “Sicko” interview with Michael Moore? – Keep people poor, keep them hopeless and disillusioned…he says as a “right honourable” Parliamentarian!!! So clearly, undeniably, – manipulating the actual way people think is seen by some as an established doctrine and legitimate mechanism of UK government.

If we want to win, we need to think, think harder, and make sure that when it comes to winning hearts and minds of the people here in Scotland that we are smarter than they are. So far however, I would say that issue is very close to call… We’re not losing I feel sure, but I’m not entirely convinced we are winning either.

Landlords and charities like this are overseen by inspectorates too.

There is action being taken at local level to see if other providers can take over. They will do everything to minimise disruption to residents.

It’s tempting to draw comparisons where we see them, but this is in poor taste. Let’s never forget the role Scotland played in slavery and how so many of our people left Scotland to colonise other countries–yes, many were sent against their will, but irrelevant when you consider that when they arrived they were at best complicit in the violence and colonialist spirit and at worse actively took part to pursue their own fortunes. Look to the plantations in the US, named after the Scottish towns and landmarks that the slaveowners missed from home. Look at the KKK, whose founders claimed Scottish ancestry (not that we want them). Look at the wealth that flowed into our ports from ravaged countries and boosted our big cities. There’s a reason Glasgow has a Jamaica Street.

Our situation is frustrating and there’s absolutely something to be said about the fear and internalised insecurities that have been fed to us, but comparisons like this erase our complicated and shameful history with the atrocities that we had a part in. As much as I would like to pretend that we were unwitting and unwilling passengers on England’s destructive romp through the world, that’s not what happened. It’s our duty to acknowledge that and be mindful of our role, so that we can make amends and progress as a nation. I understand that this is a sensitive topic and many find it upsetting or uncomfortable to talk about, but comparing current day Scots to the people many of our ancestors enslaved… Well, that’s just a bit tone deaf, don’t you think?

    Awareness.

In the 60s and 70s women formed consciousness raising groups. One book which was widely read and discussed was “Rubyfruit Jungle” by Rita May Brown. She identified women who slavishly internalised MCP values as Uncle Tomming it.

You don’t have to be a feminist or a lesbian to read it.

The strange letter written by French women distancing themselves from the “me too” movement might be an example of this phenomenon

But there is plenty of literature Scottish people can be reading and discussing to raise awareness of our true situation. This blog, for example.

Imagine that. It’s a first for me. But then I’m a good bit older and actually remember Malcom X.)

It has been discussed on several indy sites before, over the years and the analogy remarked on. As regards Hollywood’s take on the tragedy of slavery, the emphasis on films which came in the thirties and forties was to sentimentalise and sanitise the Civil War, with barely-concealed sneaking sympathy for the Confederate cause. The Confederates were portrayed as noble underdogs, somehow managing to sideline the cause of anti-slavery and concentrate instead on the consitutional divide in the warring states.

Quentin Tarantino must have been aware of Malcolm X’s speech. In his film, Django Unchained, the black hero is violently opposed by the master’s virtual major domo, the black house slave {played by Samuel L. Jackson) who is so fiercely invested in his master’s cause that he dies with him in in the final conflagration which destroys the plantation mansion.

Chamberlain was not opposed to some form of devolution – he proposed national councils for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in his Radical Programme – but he rejected out-of-hand the idea of an Irish Parliament. It would lead, he argued, to the dissolution of the union and of the Empire.

When the first Home Rule Bill was published in March 1886, Joe resigned from the Government. Now Gladstone had to deal with a party within a party, a group of MPs, led by Chamberlain, called Liberal Unionists.

From this point onwards the radical MP from Birmingham drifted towards the right. When Chamberlain returned to the Cabinet 10 years later in 1895 it was as Colonial Secretary in a Conservative and Unionist administration.”

    https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/voting-patterns-in-the-house-of-lords-rubbish-claims-of-its-independence

It is anticipated that Theresa May will appoint up to a dozen Tory peers this month – which could be joined by a handful of Labour members and some from the DUP.

It is likely she will be motivated by a desire to bolster the chamber’s Conservative ranks. Currently there are 248 Tory members from a total of 794 – meaning they are heavily outnumbered. This has resulted in recent defeats for her government, including when peers voted to give parliament a veto on the final outcome of Brexit negotiations.

Her big concern now will be ensuring she is able to get the EU withdrawal Bill through the House of Lords in the coming months.

    […]

Among the recommendations of the recent Burns report – which appeared to have cross-party support – was that political appointments would be shared between the parties in line with the result of the previous general election.

If later this month the number of Conservative appointments does dramatically outweigh those from Labour, this would mark none other than a total rejection of the recommendations – and even minimal reform.

To put it bluntly, arguments about the House of Lords’ supposed independence are rendered virtually meaningless when prime ministers can override any semblance of it through cronyism. This month’s rumoured appointments appear to prove that.

Needs must, Brexit legislation must be got through the HoL somehow and there aren’t currently enough Baron Dogby Jobses and Lady Moans to expedite the business.

At its heart is the description of how individuals develop feelings about and attachments to groups-how they build loyalty to groups. The review explores how such loyalty can lead to hostile reactions to other groups, can become translated into stereotypes that are shared by individuals, can shape the collective behavior of groups, and can help differentiate the multiple groups that define any political environment.

Wouldn’t that be cool – having a wee dram and a blether with Murdo The Fraser, on Burns Night?!

The answer of course is, America was NEVER previously great. How could it be ?

Engaged in war constantly over recent decades (since the 60’s) is not being great.

Pre 1960’s, America subjected the black community to horrendous treatment and denied them basic human rights, so up until that point, America had NEVER been great.

I’ve been aware of these words of Malcolm X for many years although I do not think I have posted on them here.

Another related area I have posted on in the past and I think possibly here, is the parallels between Scotland’s plight and and that of the African-American in the field of entertainment.

Of course I refer to the subservient (literally) roles, African Americans were required to play in innumerable movies but also the even more blatant demonstration of ubermensche v untermensche as depicted in the stereotypical song and dance routines they were required to perform. This usually involved tap dancing wearing spats with either a bowler hat or a top hat and tails, like this was upper class attire they admired and aspired to and all the time being required to wear a rictus grin.

As a child, I always felt uncomfortable watching TV reruns those old movies which were so prevalent in pre the 1960s.

However, I felt exactly the same kind of discomfort when watching British films with Harry Lauder, or Will Fyffe.

To me it was the same kind of ubermensche watching untermensch voyeurism, even though in our case the skin colour was not an additional differentiator.

It was still the underclass performing for the edification of their ‘massas’.

The main difference since the 60’s is that African Americans said, loudly and clearly, NO! resulting in, an admittedly slow but definite attitude change in America whereas in Britain we still have modern day equivalents of that kind of Uncle Tom obsequiousness from Scottish stand ups, Scottish ‘comedy’ shows etc. etc.

But, of course, I may be mistaken.

“Half the Battle”: Cultural Resonance, Framing Processes, and Ethnic Affectations in Contemporary White Separatist Rhetoric

A recent critique of frame analysis in social movements suggested that future studies (I) be sensitive to bridging micro- and macro-levels of analysis, and (2) attend better to human agency and emotions in the framing process. This paper addresses those and other issues in an examination of the “new racist” (NR) rhetoric of contemporary white separatists (WS’s) who focus on legitimating their movement using a cultural pluralist master-frame. In the context of theories about social movements, affect, and the social construction of ethnicity, I describe how NRWS’s engage in frame-transformation and frame-alignment by (a) consciously packaging a “hate-free” racism, (b) developing strategies of equivalence and reversal–presenting whites as equivalent to ethnic and racial minorities, and [c] deploying ideas about “love,” “pride,” and “heritage-preservation” to evidence both their putative lack of animosity toward others as well as their ethnic credentials.

I interpret these ethnic affectations as contextually bound efforts at truth construction that offer an opportunity to explore the role of affect in social movements. I conclude that the product of these claims is Kultural Pluralism: a blurring of distinctions between Cultural Pluralism and white supremacist racism, designed to emotionally appeal broadly to moderate and mainstream conservative whites.

Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality. Intimate Intersections, Forbidden Frontiers.

This book explores the “intimate intersections and forbidden frontiers” where race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality converge. The author defines ethnicity in a broad way to subsume nationalism, race, religious and linguistic groups, while pointing to the historical and contextual fluidity of these terms and, therefore, to their socially constructed character. In a similar social constructionist vein, she defines sexuality as the genitally-based distinction between men and women accompanied by culturally defined appropriate sexual tastes, partners and activities. Nagel wants to understand the social, economic, political, cultural, and / or religious agendas behind difference claims made in social constructions of ethnicity, gender and sexuality. As a result, she proceeds, in eight succinct, cogently argued, and well documented chapters, to map out ethno-sexual constructions; show how hegemonic regimens of sexuality shape ethnic relations, conflicts and boundaries; and document the importance of sexuality in all things racial, ethnic and national….

Sorry to disillusion you, Molly, but all matters of change of policy within the SNP can only be made by the delegates sent by Local Branches and Constituency Associations to National Conference. Thus those delegates of Grass roots members, (and every member, including such as Nicola Sturgeon herself, has exactly the same number of votes), and there are no card votes in the SNP.

The greatest example of such a policy change that I can recall was when conference voted upon a change of SNP policy on NATO membership. This was done before the World on TV. Conference had seconded proposals, seconded opposition motions and seconded amendments to both of the former proposals.

It was heatedly debated and the former policy of an independent Scotland NOT applying for NATO membership was reversed by the majority of the delegates.

The SNP membership appoints a leadership but that leadership cannot dictate party policies and it is the Holyrood parliamentary members that vote for who is to be First Minister. It could happen that these were different members appointed by the respective grass roots and elected to office MSPs. Furthermore it is the Westminster contingent who elect the leader of the Westminster SNP faction.

The SNP is, and has always been, truly democratic.

Many products have ‘Scottish’ written all over them. People just have to look for it. Whether it is real or not? Look up the internet but there are plenty of (majority) Scottish designated acknowledgement. Why people have such a problem of buying some products of good quality of from any rightful source. Supply and demand. Makes the world go round.

These products are also exported. With Scottish/eccose written all over them. As a selling point of reputation. Scottish products have a reputation for quality. It is an EU requirement that goods have to be labelled by country of origin. So customers know the source. The stupidity of labelling any Scottish whisky as British will just rebound with loss of sales. People know Scottish whisky is of good reputation and will source the products not mis labelled. As a matter of choice. A good marketing stance to preserve standards and reputation.

Anyone who opposes Scottish Independence lasts on average two years. Politicans, businesses, organisations etc, Especially in Scotland, they lose 50% of support. Loss of business. Apart from any indy concern we have to protect the Scottish Brand – who has ever heard of British Whisky – and even M&S will be desperate to brand Scottish when the English water table is contaminated by fracking and Scotland is the only place left with uncontaminated water.

In the meantime M&S there really are plenty of other food outlets who have not made the corporate decisions M&S have made against Scotland.

Are they joining because (a) They already feel like house Negroes/Jocks ? (b) do they want to become the house Negro/Jock? and thus expect to be indoctrinated as such to eventually believe in Project Britain.(c) Did they join through some kind of Military fervour ? and the notion that The Anglo British Military is the only route to sate their Military ambitions.
With (b) especially there is always the chance to renounce their house Negro/Jock position and come back over to the Good Scottish side. With(c) there is still the opportunity today to join The French Foreign Legion and sate your Military ambitions there. For (a) you are pretty much already lost to Scotland and can only bring negativity to Scotland with your return.

Just for the sake of accuracy, M&S did not “immediately rectify” and did not immediately acknowledge an error. Customer/s raised it with M&S first. It was only after The National took up the issue that the company made the change. And of course it was not only an issue regarding Scotch but also gin made in Scotland listed as British in contrast to gin made in England.

Great to think that now in shops throughout Scotland customers that value Scottish produce/products and Scotland’s brand might be undertaking their own personal ‘audits’ of how the outputs of Scotland’s farmers, growers and food manufacturers are being labeled and promoted (or not).

“On the subject of American History..”

In the first place the, catch all, description they use of the phrase, “America”, or even, “The United States”, is as bad, if not worse, than The Westminster Establishment’s use of the catch all term, “Britain”, instead of the United Kingdom.

There are three Americas plus Canada and a few more odds and sods. There is The USA, Central America, The United States of Mexico, New Mexico and South America and they even include parts north of Canada. These stretch from the north to the south poles of old Planet Earth.

Both Westminster and Washington use these catch all descriptions as propaganda to belittle the legitimate states around them and to attempt to dominate them.

Even North America does not properly describe the United States of America. There are far more Americans outside the USA than in it and, like Westminster, Washington is terrified of those states they seek to absorb and dominate.

To put that into perspective the USAsians seek to denigrate, for example, all Mexicans but can anyone honestly claim that a Mexican in a beautiful Hacienda with vast areas of cultivated and grazing land is an inferior species of humanity than a Red Neck white USAsian dweller in a Calafornian Trailer Park?

Furthermore, “American History”, is even, (Thanks to Hollywood), more fictitious than even that of the United Kingdom/Britain.

The truth being that it was the white settlers who began the practice of taking native American scalps as trophies to wear on their belts and thus they were the savages not what they called the Indians. It was the White Settlers who deliberately slaughtered the Buffalo that were the mainstay supporting the native American nations and reservations were essentially just big concentration camps.

So you are correct – there was nothing heroic about the formation of the USA, nothing heroic about the cowboys and the countries surrounding the USA are far from being the inferior species of humanity the often, “White Trash”, USAsians would have the World believe their neighbours to be.

The treatment still being dealt out to the former enslaved, and mainly coloured, USAsians in the USA is a blot on the face of the World and that blot now extends to vast tracts of the World where USAsian military might is killing and maiming countless million of mainly coloured human beings.

The USA are the self appointed World’s Police force and at both domestic and World level they are equally inclined to shoot first and not even bother to ask questions afterwards. In which World policing they are not slow to claim, “Britain”, a.k.a. England, as their greatest allies.

    Go figure.

I didn’t really want to touch this topic with a barge pole because reasons.
But ach…anyway, the topic as I understand it is about a mindset, not about race or slavery. The example used in the OP just happens to be associated with that.
What I’d like to address is where the example is inclined to be associated ‘Oppression’ as opposed to ‘Repression’ and I think there is where the difference lies in relation to Scotland today.

It is a difference and it’s interesting to think about whether the Field/House/Uncle Tam analogy stands up, or whether (as alluded elsewhere) perhaps “Stockholm Syndrome” or other psychological analogy is equally valid.
I would tentatively suggest, that the primary driver in the Field/House analogy was ‘Oppression’ and much of that from a basic survival root initially and passive.
Repression is a different animal, though certainly produces the same division of mindsets but perhaps for a different reason.

In 2012 Alex Salmond -in the consultation paper ‘Your Scotland Your Referendum’ – stated that “Scotland is not oppressed and we have no need to be liberated” (I’m sure that line will have straightened a few backs!) – However, he goes on to say “Independence matters because we do not have the powers to reach our potential. We are limited in what we can do to create jobs, grow the economy and help the vulnerable. We shouldn’t have a constitution which constrains us, but one which frees us to build a better society”…

Now to me, that was making a clear distinction between oppression and repression (stifles urge to link “Help, help I’m being repressed”) The Field/House mindset if it develops here, is at it’s root a result of conscious choice to be the part of the repressed or the repressor. Not a product of base oppression of the ‘whipped cur’ fawning to it’s master.
In that case it is quite certainly far more insidious and invidious position to take. For I’d suggest (I don’t know) but the ‘Oppressed of the Field’ may look upon the ‘Oppressed of the House’ more in pity – but the ‘Repressed of the Field’ look upon the ‘House’ with anger and resentment.

So, yes I think there are melded elements there and it varies from person to person. But the real ‘Uncle Tams’ of Scotland appear to be driven to that a bit more insidiously. Not so much from a survival strategy due to Oppression, but to be either part of the ‘winning team’ or to actively repress their countrymen. It’s that active choice which also drags it further from “Stockholm Syndrome” which is also passive.

I’m sure there are those who will argue about whether they feel oppressed or repressed. I’d say have a long think about that. I don’t doubt historically there is a possible case to be made for oppression in some quarters of Scotland, but today? In the interest of brevity I won’t expound any more on this psychological topic (I’ll leave such things to Mr Brodie)
Also, If you have never read Alex’s Introduction to the paper I referenced, I recommend it.

This follows on from the mentions of ‘Scotland the brand’, and UJ branding.

For the past few months, I have been buying ‘Dairy Manor British filtered milk’ from Lidl – £1.09 for 4 Litres. It has a UJ on the label.

    https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ocado-compare-prices/Fresh_Milk/Dairy_Manor_Filtered_Milk_Semi_Skimmed_Fresher_for_Longer_2L.html

The reason I buy it is because of its long ‘use by’ period. It doesn’t go off before I’ve used it all. I even freeze some in 500ml bottles, for defrosting and taking to work. A 500ml bottle does me for my coffee during the week and doesn’t go off during that period.

The producer’s name and address on the label is Müller, East Kilbride. From Googling, it appears that Müller bought Robert Wiseman Dairies some years ago, hence their presence in East Kilbride.

What also turned up (from 2016) was that the depots in Aberdeen and East Kilbride were to be closed down. Anyone from the East Kilbride area know what’s happening? Is the Müller presence in EK just ‘a plaque on the wall’?

Good post, thanks. I’d forgotten about active and passive modes, though I’ve probably still been trying to use them in my sentence construction.

It is a difficult one, though I would suggest the Acts of Union repress Scotland’s national identity and liberty to develop public policy that’s supported by the Scottish electorate. The Acts also changed the legal status of the Scottish person, from sovereign individual to subject of the Crown. Subsequently, Scotland has stood still, in terms of national development, when compared with other European nations with sovereign parliaments. To this day, Scotland still suffers unacceptably high mortality rates due to poverty related illness, as Scots continue to be denied access to our inalienable “Right to Development”. So I’d suggest Scots are technically oppressed, whether or not it is felt socially acceptable (see Brexit).

    Tagore: Transcending Post Colonial Attitudes

Cultural identity remains a strong ground of resistance to the political/commercial hegemony of forces ranged against pluralism. As part of this ‘assertion’ or ‘resistance’, culture is increasingly being defined through variegated parameters.

During the days of colonisation, culture was a potent symbol of protest as well as cooption. Post-colonial theory premises itself largely on what it perceives as acculturation arising out of a policy of diffusion-which aimed at the expansion of European culture throughout the colonies; as distinct from the evolutionary approach where parallel developments emerge out of interaction. Hoebel in Kopf ( 1969:4-5) defines acculturation as a ‘process of interaction between two societies by which the culture of the society in subordinate position is drastically modified to conform to the culture of the dominant society’. A large section of scholars of post-colonialism view the Indian renaissance in this light. Irrespective of shades of left or right, such theorists are suspicious of the Orientalists who were the prime movers of the evolutionary approach.

From one point of view, the reconstruction of the past is construed as resistance to an alien political power; from a different point of view, it may involve perpetuation of an indigenous social order smothering inner currents of change-and thus an oppressive native corollary to foreign domination, guilty of fostering an unjust system. It may also be viewed as a subtle endeavour at sharing the loaves of office/patronage.

“The right to development is an inalienable human right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development, in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms can be fully realized.” (Article 1.1, Declaration on the Right to Development)

“The human right to development also implies the full realization of the right of peoples to self-determination, which includes, subject to the relevant provisions of both International Covenants on Human Rights, the exercise of their inalienable right to full sovereignty over all their natural wealth and resources.” (Article 1.2)

It is a fascinating issue Cameron, BBC propaganda. Human rights and propaganda go together like oil and water, they need to be mixed hard to look they’re one and the same because when they stop the mix they just separate completely.

Only real defense or explanation of the success of BBC propaganda is, simply, our elitist state is not actually that exclusive.

Our elite masters will literally take anyone at all, as long you’re loyal, rich and or a UK media propagandist, aka Ligger Neil, ordinary Paisley lad, uni, tory, Sarah Smith, posh gel sure but still middle class Scots, Brewer, again, middle class ligger, small town boy, livin the bright lights big city beeb gimp life, envy of all his old local hack comrades.

Look at everyone in Pacific Quay, that we can see, publicly. They’re all middle class, some private school, most uni, but they are all very highly paid, for their loyal propaganda, all averaging £200 hundred grand a year. Is it show biz or unremitting SNP bac attack propaganda pay?

Are you on £200+k a year?

An NHS heart surgeon gets an average £75k a year. Slogging away at school for 5 A’s, 6 years really grafting through uni, in an incredibly competitive uni selection process, who knows how long before consultancy, in our terrible and horrific NHS hospitals.

Your average beeb gimp’s nothing like any of the above yet has no compunction in monstering Scotland’s NHS, day in day out.

So that beeb £200k a year gimp pays buys you very high grade propaganda, look at Sarah Smith’s 100,000 Scottish A&E waiting list tragedy. A blatant flat out lie from the lovely Sarah, yet its out here now, pumping away into our lives, and Sarah will be amply rewarded for all of it.

Thank you for the link to Nicola Sturgeon’s interview on the Andrew Marr show.

    Our First Minister is excellent.

It must be a shock to Andrew Marr’s system to hear a politition who actualy answers his questions.

I don’t know for sure if you’re simply stirring to cause trouble but it’s begining to look like it from here. You can’t expect to win folk over to your argument by insulting them? So why do you continue to do so?

    To paraphrase Richard Dawkins;

There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to run the affairs of our country… The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our country can be as ambitious, as inclusive and as successful as we choose to make it.

I get the point of the article but Muhammad Ali (pictured with Mr. X) was no house Ni**er. He rejected his given “slave” name of Cassius Clay, and was stripped of his boxing titles (and passport) at the height of his powers due to his opposition to the Vietnam War. As Ali said “No Viet Cong ever called me nigger”

Nobody was suggesting for a moment that he was. The position of the picture relative to the text is important.

Great article Stu! Another great black author who knew all about the curse of colonialism and suppression was Frantz Fanon who said “when we revolt it’s not for a particular culture. We revolt simply because for many reasons, we can no longer breathe” I think we have now reached that point in Scotland when the majority are saying enough is enough.
