Wings Over Scotland

The Days Of No Good Choices

Posted on June 24, 2024 by

There are now just 10 days until the general election. Wings has never told its readers how to vote and we’re not going to start now. Which is lucky, because if we were, we wouldn’t have a clue how to.

Just, y’know, not for any of these wretched, worthless shiters.

Because beyond any shadow of a doubt, if you have the slightest interest in ever achieving Scottish independence, the worst thing you could possibly do at this election is vote for anyone in the SNP.

That much is a given, and if you’re reading this website you’re not going to need any further explanation. To vote for the SNP this year is to vote to delay any advancement of the indy cause for at least another decade.

But as for the best WAY to not vote for the SNP, that’s a much trickier pickle for which we have no easy answers. There are a few options, but none of them are very great, so let’s have a quick walk through the pros and cons of each.

—————————————————————

VOTING FOR UNIONISTS

This is, for obvious reasons, the least palatable option for indy fans, but also by far the most effective way to get rid of the SNP, which is the prerequisite for any progress towards independence. As such it’s a long-term strategy with multiple short- and medium-term downsides – you’ll almost certainly have an imbecile for an MP for the next five years, for a start. (But probably no change there.)

Scottish Labour in particular have tried their damnedest to make voting for them completely impossible for independence supporters, and there is no force on Earth which could ever make this site suggest to anyone that they should consider voting for Blair McDougall under any circumstances whatever.

But in other seats the best-placed challenger may be relatively bearable, or at least no worse than whichever awful SNP dolt is currently in place. If you’re unlucky enough to live in East Renfrewshire, maybe best just to move house.

[EDIT: Colette Walker of the ISP is standing in East Ren. She’s good people.]

The media will of course celebrate a defeat for the SNP as a defeat for independence, but caring what the Daily Record says is a really terrible reason for doing anything. Roughly 50% of Scots still want independence and aren’t going to change their minds, so there’ll remain fertile territory for a political party to cultivate. Nature abhors a vacuum, and politics doubly so.

If you can’t bring yourself to vote for Unionists no matter what, we understand and empathise entirely, but THIS ELECTION IS NOT ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION – that ship sailed long ago – and it might be helpful to remember that.

SPOILING YOUR VOTE/STAYING AT HOME

A section of the Yes movement is loudly advocating “repurposing” your vote by writing “END THE UNION” or somesuch slogan across it. That isn’t repurposing anything, of course, it’s just old-fashioned vote-spoiling, and while people always talk about the potential impact of a mass spoiling campaign it never happens.

You’d need about a third of the vote to be spoiled papers for anyone to take the slightest bit of notice, and that just ain’t happening. (For reference, the percentage of spoiled papers in the 2019 election was 0.36%, which is a hundredth of that figure.)

However, you’re at least not doing any direct HARM by spoiling your paper and it’s mildly cathartic – the marks on spoiled papers are read out to the candidates, and it may be your only hope of having your MP hear your voice even momentarily for the next half-decade – so have fun if you feel like it.

The difference between spoiling your vote and simply not bothering to go out at all is of interest to politics stat nerds, but nobody else, because nobody attempts to ascertain which spoiled votes are making a pointed statement about the inadequacies of the candidates and which are just some moron who can’t even put an X in a box with a pencil without messing it up.

VOTING FOR MINORITY CANDIDATES

Not everyone in Scotland will have a candidate from Alba/the ISP/independents that they could vote for, but a fair few will. If smaller parties want to become bigger parties, at some point people have to start voting for them even in the knowledge that in the short term it’ll be a “wasted” vote.

If the Alba vote, say, were to rise to 5% in this election, they’d obviously get no seats but it’d be a signifier that the party had momentum and was reaching the sort of level where it’d be expecting to pick some up at the next Holyrood election, which would in turn start to increase their media presence and public awareness.

The drawback is that giving your vote to a party with, realistically, no chance of winning the seat – rather than to the candidate best placed to remove/defeat the SNP – risks letting the SNP squeeze through the middle, and every SNP MP that slithers back to Westminster with their gravy bucket drags out the party’s necessary death for longer.

It’s not entirely unprecedented for candidates elected for one party to retain enough of a personal vote to keep the seat for another party or as an independent, so readers might well feel it was worth trying to keep the likes of Neale Hanvey, Kenny MacAskill and Angus MacNeil – all contributors to the website you’re reading now – in their jobs, and we certainly wouldn’t argue with that.

—————————————————————

So that’s it. For what it’s worth, I’ll probably be spoiling again. Only one leaflet has come through my letterbox in Bath (from the impossibly dreadful Lib Dem incumbent Wera Hobhouse), nobody has knocked on the door, I haven’t seen a street stall for any party and I can’t find a single hustings where I can ask the candidates any questions, so my thoughts of possibly voting for someone to get Hobhouse out look kaput.

(It’s tempting to stay at home and contribute to what may be a very low turnout figure, but as noted above that’s a distinction without a meaningful difference, and the impulse to indicate democratic willing by at least showing up to the polling station to let them know they’re all scumbags is a strong one.)

But for Wings readers in Scotland the dilemma is much harder still, and we appreciate that. We wish we could offer you a genuine constructive strategy. But realistically the only useful thing this election can achieve is destruction, because you need to bulldoze useless unsaveable ruins before you can build something new.

Your vote, as always, is between you and your conscience, and only you can decide whether you want to contribute to the solution or merely to swerve any personal responsibility for what happens.

But after the catastrophic reign of Nicola Sturgeon there are no shortcuts. Voting SNP “because they’re the independence party” is like cancelling a dental appointment for a root canal. You’re still going to have to deal with it at some point, and you’re just letting more decay and pain take hold in the meantime.

Everybody knows Labour have already won the election by a landslide, perhaps by more than 300 seats. You may consider there to be some value in having a Labour MP who at least has the ear of the government, but the idea of Scottish MPs of any party having any meaningful collective influence is a fantasy.

Keir Starmer’s majority will be several times larger than Scotland’s total representation, and therefore Scotland, as a country, will have no voice in the next Parliament whether it sends 57 Labour MPs, 57 SNP MPs or 57 sacks of birdseed. There is absolutely nothing you can do about that.

(Don’t take our word for it, ask this useless fannybaws.)

In so far as we have any advice at all, then, it’s to use your vote to wreak as much destruction as you can, to shed the dead weight around our ankles and clear the launchpad for next time so that we can in future once more begin to dream of slipping the surly bonds of the Union.

I agree there is no earthly reason why a trans changing room or toilets could not be set up,

When looking up the word Trans- it means to cross over to the other side.
It does not say the transition has already taken place. But is in the process,

So a trans- women is someone that has not completed the transformation.

In that case they need a space separate of their own until the trans- formation is operated on medically – physically and the psychological help is mentally completed.
And I have no objection to them having ” their own spaces” just like men and women.
Because women themselves are not trans- women, they are already women not under-going a transition.
And men wishing to remain male are not transitioning,
And as a women I insist in helping these trans- Women by giving them the “right” to have a completely separate space of their own, so there is no need for them to feel in the wrong place at the wrong time in the rest of Society.

But the latest research suggested that five flights landed at Wick, a further five at Inverness and three at Aberdeen.

James Che: I think I answered you when I meant to answer Hatuey The both sides nonsense falls at the first hurdle when you look at the crimes against females and the ways in which they are ill-treated right across the globe. Females are ill-treated precisely for being female. No other reason need be applied.

Being female is the baseline. Yes, men do suffer injustices, too, but they do not suffer them BECAUSE they are MEN. They suffer them for a variety of reasons. All the ill-treatments I listed are suffered by females BECAUSE they are FEMALES. That distinction has to be made if we are ever to real,im the moral high ground.

‘Trans women’ are men and, as men, they are as much capable of harming females as any other man. This is the very heart of the matter and why, castrated or otherwise, they remain a threat to females. Every instinct tells females that any man can be a threat (even if individual men are not a threat by a majority, in everyday life, wars being very different) and those instincts are called self-preservation and have been honed by Nature to help to protect females.

Chimpanzee females (our nearest primate relatives) show precisely the same instinctive fear of strange males, and they, too, are often bullied and beaten by male chimps they do know. In nature, female chimps can band together and drive out a psychotic male who oversteps the mark. The other males seldom do, if ever.

Female chimps are very often the ones who introduce new techniques to the group, too. Females of all species are not inferior males, but the complementary sex. Unfortunately, many, many males believe that females are, indeed, inferior males in strength, intellect and morality. By the way, most of the TRAs who intimidate women at meetings are male, not female. Which is why they hide their faces. They are weak cowards who would never dream of trying to intimidate men in this way.

No I don’t think Assange will be safe in a (US) aligned country, politicians such as Penny Wong and Richard Marles would sell out Assange in the blink of an eye. There was a CIA plan to assassinate Assange whilst he was trapped in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Yes Albanese played a small part in asking for Assange to be freed, but Australia is the tip of the (USA’s) spear in the economic war against China. Australia now can’t put a comprehensive military force together without the aid of (US) forces, AUKUS further compromises Australia, both economically and militarily, and damages its relations with those nations that don’t comply with (US) interests in the region.

The (US) has multiple spying bases (listening posts) such as in Pine Gap in Australia.

If Maduro is not illegally ousted in Venezuela’s elections then Venezuela might be a good place for him and his family to live Venezuela isn’t aligned with the (US).

Australian Federal Elections will be held next year before the end of September, if an even more rabid pro-US PM comes to office it could spell danger for Assange if he’s still living in Australia.

The EU let the cat out the bag. It’s a direct instruction from America that the EU was instructed to adopt. That’s why every government has implemented it immediately with absolutely no question & against public opinion. That’s why there’d to be no debate.

Some EU countries are finally kicking back, while others have lost their seat in the recent EU parliament, or are flat out refusing to play along any longer. (Hungary for one).

We could’ve been one at least flat out refusing if we had our own parliament & a constitution that no parliamentarian can pass shit that’s against public opinion & is from a foreign country.

Those guys with the high heels in the women’s toilet are basically on a mission to save capitalism and the free world. People should probably have more respect or something.

Anyway, sorry to break it to you all like this but the so-called “free” market doesn’t really work. Banks are as important to capitalism as trees are to forests and they all died in 2008.

If we can stretch our imaginations and pretend capitalism is viable, maybe it’s not too great a leap to imagine that women can have peckers.

In the article he quotes this from the movie Network …..

“You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no #ussians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! […] Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and DuPont, and Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.”

Democracy ? Aye , wouldn’t that be great . Wonder when it might occur .

All the points made in that quote would apply to an iScotland – unless we had the intelligence and TRULY Independent spirit to resist we’d just become another vassal state of Global Capitalism . Hence my antipathy to all the ( alleged ) Independence Parties ( not sure about ISP ) and related Punditry thoroughly wrong-headed rush to get us signed-up to every Globalist entity going if/when we (re)gain our autonomy .

Some EU countries are finally kicking back, while others have lost their seat in the recent EU parliament, or are flat out refusing to play along any longer. (Hungary for one).

    I think it’s more complicated.

The EU’s economic prosperity wasn’t the end, but the means to the end. The end was peace in Europe after two grievous world wars and centuries of turmoil. By and large, that’s been a great success and the reconciliation between sworn enemies has been a commendable phenomenon.

The “price” however, was the EU abdicated its defence to NATO, and essentially, NATO is America. Arguably, Europe got rich because it wasn’t spending on defence, the USA got rich because it was.

And for decades, that “kinda” worked, but with greater wealth came greater greed, and with the rampant greed of NeoLiberalism and Free Market piracy, caused the West in particular to lose focus on peace, and the US military needed to maintain the East as an enemy to keep defence budgets juicy, but increasingly, it’s needing actual wars to keep the money coming.

In the non-West, yes there was communism and ideological enemies, but it was clear that Communism was relatively unstable, and nowhere near as prosperous as Western capitalism. The ideology lost it’s grip, and in the 1990’s when it collapsed, the West should have normalised relations with Ru$$ia, and embraced her into the EU.

However, an EU with Ru$$ia as a member meant NATO would lose it’s bogey man, and worse still, the EU would be a global superpower which didn’t rely on the US for anything, so the US would also lose buyers for it’s output – weapons.

So, amongst a raft of bad ideas, a monumental strategic blunder happened in the 90’s, led by the US and, well, not Thatcher herself, but let’s include Thatcherism, which instead of helping Ru$$ia survive it’s breakup, instead resolved to exploit it and destroy Ru$$ia; keep it as “the enemy” but keep it weak and beatable.

So far, so good in terms of clarity.

However, there are two more, well three more actually, massive components to the puzzle; first, the consequences amongst Ru$$ian friends and allies being ostracised and kept out in the cold when they wanted to be friends. Next, China, a very complicated component, and third but not least, the bloodthirsty Zioni$m and the dirty politics of the ME.

The degenerate Western attitudes to vilify the Ru$$ians while trying to destroy them, and the murderously asymmetric double standards and attitudes to events in Pale$tine, and the emergence of an all consuming and insatiable NeoLiberal greed have sown a profoundly deep mistrust of all things Western.

The West expected the rest of the planet to wither its shadow unless due deference was paid to the US in all its might. You might be murderous land steal occupiers defying International Law, but if you allied yourself to Western capitalism the US would look after you. But if you happened to be a murderous land owning sovereign national who didn’t believe in Western Capitalism, the US would bomb the living shit out you and your children.

But the non-West didn’t wither in the shade. It grew strong, it grew powerful, and it began out-thinking Western collective leadership. And it wasn’t very difficult.

There’s a bit of an overlap, sure, but the Non-Western leaders have been far more adroit and enlightened in their strategic planning than the bloated and decadent West, and they are in the process of changing the paradigm of Western dominance and supremacy, and there is nothing the US can do about it except threaten nuclear annihilation.

The West is blustering, pressing all the buttons to demonise the enemies, agitating racism and nationalism as it always does when it feels threatened, but nothing is working. It’s sounding klaxons all along the Maginot Line, but the war has already been lost.

The West needs political Leaders of great acumen, but the systems are dysfunctional and instead of great leaders, they get pliable imbeciles like Boris Johnson, May, Trump, Biden, Van der Leyden etc, etc, etc.

Scotland gets it’s own imbeciles…Sturgeon’s Brexit and No-fly-zone, Gender bullshit and the “continuity Sturgeonism” which defies all reason and logic but stubbornly cannot be purged out the pipes when flushed.

Do you see it yet Scotland? Do you see how this ends if we don’t jump from this moving vehicle?

What’s Swinney gonna do? The same fk all he’s done for 30 years.

A strong start, but totally unravels in to tin foil hat conspiracy theorising and RoS level sophomoric Brigadoonery towards the end sadly. The fact that your hot take on the recent history is clapped by the nativist barking seals in hear simply proves the point: the worldview presented is attractive to only a small minority of voters on the political fringes, both left and right.

There was never any realistic prospect of Muscovy being invited in to the EU – or even NATO – because the regime there didn’t want to follow the example of it’s former protectorates in Eastern Europe. It still had (and has) pretensions of being a superpower. It wasn’t manipulated by the collective West, it’s governing elite (with the tacit support of most of its people) simply decided they didn’t want to follow the same path.

There’s an argument to be made that the west collectively could and should have tried harder to encourage democratisation in Muscovy post Yeltsin, but there was no way yhe west was going to impose it. Historically however, the lost opportunity to integrate Muscovy and help it transform in to a liberal democracy will be seen as a huge mistake, alongside the failure of the USA to support the League of Nations in 1918 and the failure of democracies to stop authoritarianism in the 1930’s.

I know you and others have the hots for this idea that a combination of the growing economic power of the BRICS nations and Uncle Vlad and Chairman Xi’s military power will somehow prevail, but it’s still very much a niche and minority view. Don’t be under any illusion that it has significant support in the world in general, however much it might resonate with the usual suspects in here.

    Well said.

Their evil plan for world domination has spectacularly backfired on them. Endless sanctions didn’t have it’s desired effect but instead made them strive to become self sufficient. Now they’re growing & the West is having a mental breakdown on how to stop them. The days of printing money are over.

The EU has reverted to type with Von Der Liar at the helm too stoking the colonisers up with tales of breaking up Ruskies for untold wealth & tales of creating their own military industrial complex – crashing their economies in the process by telling them who they can & cannot talk to.

Then there’s NATO. Shown to the entire world it has fck all that works, feck all industry, feck all manpower & it turns out feck all co-ordination either as countries refuse to take part in their latest hair brained idea that’ll get them all killed.

They are the absolute dregs of humanity. They can only fight defenceless women, children & little countries without much in the way of defense to start with & it’s there for the entire world to see.

And we can also add in the total corruption of the UN, the ICC & the ICJ who only have one interest and that’s protecting murdering barstewards. They could issue arrest warrants for P for transporting orphans from a warzone in a nanosecond but killing hundreds of thousands of children in P*lestine has them all confused about the law that they need months to mull it over.

And, Ruby, you don’t need to explain yourself to anyone on here. If I had to choose someone from here to be stuck in a lift with John Main, it would probably be you.

Fortunately for me and especially John Main you are totally powerless.

Nobody has to explain themselves to anyone but I would like to know if you know anything about who & why it was declared that a man believing he was a woman was no longer considered a mental illness and also if you know anything about the Yogyakarta Principles.

Who are these guys with the plan to ‘distract and divide’ and why stop at transgenderism not being a mental illness and not go for the more hard core mentalists like the psychopaths, schizophrenics & the rest.
Is that maybe their ‘distract and divide’ back up plan?

I like Northcode’s post because they are very imaginative and and yours seem similar except unlike Northcode you claim to be posting fact and not fiction.

Change the genre of your posts Hatuey and all will be well.

Your “is it rhetorical” comment reminded my of a reported (quite possibly apochryphal) question allegedly posed in an Oxford/Cambridge philosophy examination paper many decades ago.
The question, “Is this a question, discuss and elaborate”.
The best Honours answer, “Only if this is an answer.”

It does indeed appeal to me, Sven. Thanks for bringing to my attention. Clever answer – no wonder it was considered the best.

New kettle functioning perfectly. My outburst of profanity yesterday was by design and not caused by a lack of coffee.

Actually, I’ve been meaning to offer an apology to you. You made a comment about magic and quoted Richard Bach on magic only being magical until the trick was understood.

I gave a smartassed answer trying to be clever and on reflection I feel it might have come across as rude. That was not my intention (I was just being a smartass). So, my apologies if my reply came across as rude to you. I suspect Richard Bach is probably right.

The GRA pish has been done to death. It’s as dead & as tiresome as the SNP. Get over it already & stop having a tantrum cause no one else is giving it the attention you seem to think it deserves. Yer nine yrs too late. Six if you live in Scotland & twenty since the 2004 Act.

It is a topic, and probably one of the few that there is actually relatively little disagreement about. There are very few if any TRA’s or their supporters posting here, or people who disagree with a gender critical view of the issue, or the kind of line followed by Rev Stu on the matter.

The few contrarians like Geri and Ruby who could start an argument in an empty room aren’t (thankfully) representative.

Over on the Slugger website there is a discussion on the state of the NI NHS and its failure. The title of a Sunday post poses the question of whether the crisis points to either more co-operation with Ireland or re-unification.

“…in the UK as a whole, there is a 15% deficit of £32 billion annually..”

“Half the UK’s hospital beds have been closed in the past 30 years, which means that France now has proportionately twice as many hospital beds, Germany three times and Japan four times. The UK has a below average number of doctors and nurses, and the lowest number of CT and MRI scanners per person among 16 comparable developed countries.”

“It is part of our social fabric, part of the glue that holds society together – it’s how we look after the vulnerable, those suffering and dying. Failure to provide a high quality health service will undermine confidence in our democratic society.”

You keep banging on about how BTL discourse has sunk. Is that cause no one is buying yer propaganda pish about how great the West is? Yer not cock o the walk? Everything you say is fictional pish. Deviancy, debauchery, mass murder, theft, rigged elections, overthrowing governments, assassinations, puppet regimes, resource stripping & land grabs…jeez, why can’t everyone outside the G7 just concern themselves with everyone’s pronouns instead.

It’s a mystery. It’s an even bigger one trying to think everyone outside the G7 wishes they were just like them. Delusions of grandeur is a recognised mental illness & so is psychopaths & sociopaths. They should ban all private schools for breeding ppl with mental illnesses. There isn’t a bigger bunch of narcissists outside the G7. Sorry to disappoint you but facts are facts. Everyone can’t wait to see the back of them as demonstrated on a daily basis.

That has got to be one of the most pathetic replies that I’ve ever read.

He claims everyone agrees about gender issues so no need to comment.

That is absolute rubbish you would be hard pushed to find a couple of posters on here who even know what the GRA is.

Poster for the most part on Wings do not want to talk about ‘gender issues’ and that I find pretty weird.

As you say moixx The WoS Twitter/X is chock-full of gender-related stuff

What the ‘The WoS Twitter/X’ isn’t full of is that stuff that regularly gets posted here. I can’t post what they are about because Stu has made them banned words because he doesn’t want these topic discussion BTL. Clue it’s all about wars.
