I have complex hearing problems. Including industrial deafness, Tinnitus and a rather annoying problem that is frequency, rather than volume, based. I can manage face to face conversations fairly well by use of a certain amount of lip reading but it is difficult when there is background noise. Phones all pose problems.

So I bought and installed an answer phone/FAX machine. On this I leave a message explaining I cannot hear phone voices and quote my email, FAX and mobile, (text only), addresses/numbers.

You would not believe the number of callers who get that message yet go ahead with their message but never follow through with either an email, FAX or text message.
Do they not understand the phrase, “I cannot hear phones”?

What is particularly laughable is the cold callers who use automated calling machines. I know these as non-human callers as they do not wait for the tone to indicate my recorded message has finished.

So I get messages that just say … … … press 1, or some other set of auto-machine selectors.

I don’t mind these calls as I set the machine not to ring but just take the message.

So if they want to waste money with their machine calling my machine it costs them but not me. The other clue that it is a machine or computer calling is the voices, (I’ve been told), are restricted to just a few. It depends upon what machine the caller has bought to automate their cold calling. I can receive anything up to between ten and twenty such auto-cold-calls in a 24hour period.

Think on that – there are machines all over the World calling other machines – ad infinitum.

But I will go without Christmas this year to contribute… I hope everyone can chip in just a little. Just remind yourself that Carbuncle voted to bomb Syrian women and children and have a think if you can maybe up what you were planning to give…

O/T I can never understand why George Galloway, that Will Podmore who posts on here, all those Britnat socialists say that voting for Scottish indy “will divide the working class”? Surely it will also, by the same reasoning, divide the upper (“repressive”) class – and so be a good thing? No?!?

It is weird that George Galloway and many like him are allowed to meet with Sadam Hussein, brown-nose Qadaffi, heck, they could even have been allowed to publicly kiss Stalin or Hitler, but the complete no-go area is Scottish independence.

What IS it about Scottish independence that even a united Ireland can be allowed, but Scotland must not go? Is there some legend, like the ravens of the Tower of London, that when they lose Dumfries, England will fall??

Off topic but important, apologies if this breaches any WoS protocol.

Just received an update from The People Versus Carmichael.

The price of justice does not come cheap. The stubbornness of the lying miscreant that passes for an MP at Orkney and Shetland continues to cost foodbanks and democracy untold harm.

The campaign, already at £134,360 has now been hit with an additional £75,000 legal bill on top of this.

I’m banging across a tenner. Hopefully fellow WoS folk will join in too. The Northern Isles 4 are very brave putting everything they own on the line because of a lying excuse of a politician by the name of Alistair Carmichael.

I think the decent thing to do here, for anyone and everyone who believes in democracy – no matter what their political persuasion – is to consider firing across a fiver, tenner or more if you can manage…

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-people-versus-carmichael#/

The campaign needs a further £75,000.

Hopefully it will be raised soon.

Be that on the despicable Alistair Carmichael’s conscience. All that money could and should have gone to foodbanks. Not for that lying creep to cling onto his financial gravy train otherwise known as Westminster.

Come on WoSers, please do the Orcadian and Shetland folk proud. Think about donating now. Thanks.

    @galamcennalath says: 5 December, 2015 at 5:35 pm

“Good point. I don’t think I’ve ever had an unsolicited call with a Scottish accent.”

As I already posted most of the cold calling is done by machines, mainly computer programs. I’m unable to hear most callers over a phone line so use an answer/FAX machine. When it answers callers it tells them I cannot hear their message but informs them how they can reach me by email, text or FAX message.

If the caller is a human being they usually just hang up and do not attempt to leave a message as they know I cannot hear it. If it is NOT a cold call they then contact me in a way I can read.

However, if it is a machine or computer it doesn’t wait for the tone to indicate my message has finished and all that is recorded is a part of their spiel that misses their intro and usually says, (so I’m told), … … if you want, “whatever”, press number one: if you want, “Whatever else”, press number two … …

Apparently my no-deaf helpers say there is a limited number of recognizable voices as there are only so many companies selling these automated machines or programs.

I also get the impression that those making the calls are getting paid by the number of calls they make rather than those that are successful something. Otherwise why would they keep calling the same numbers over and over and over again? Humans would cross off unsuccessfully called numbers as a waste of time but machines can’t tell the difference.

Interesting dynamic here. James Kelly is actively campaigning on behalf of Mo Razzaq the Labour candidate for local councilor in the forthcoming Blantyre by-election. I do not wish to denigrate Mr Razzaq, a respected local businessman, who does have some standing in the community.
But as well as being a local shopkeeper, Mr Razzaq is also known locally as a major landlord in the area. Having purchased, in the main, ex-local authority houses which he now leases at market value rents. Rents which are far in excess of local authority rents and of which I am sure a large proportion may be dependent on housing benefit or equivalent subsidy.
I wondered how this sits with the socialist principles of the Labour Party in Scotland. How does the Labour Party would view his role in this business, and compare it, say, with the property business of Michelle Thompson M.P.
Would there not be a conflict of interest in a councillor receiving a benefit from rents subsidised by social welfare payments.
I’m not suggesting there is any wrongdoing on Mr. Razzaq’s part, just a risk of conflict of interest, and a certain amount of hypocrisy on the part of he Labour Party in Scotland

I want to see us raise our game. We are continually embroiled voluntarily in complicated arguments about distortions of Scotland’s economic condition. Invariably these describe a Scotland trapped in a busted UK economy and use the result of this as arguments against the too stupid, too small, too poor Scotland. We must stop this.

They feel they are above the law & this case may show them that this is not the case when people combine to challenge their actions.

O/T Slab’s new attack line on APD is a stat on CO2 emissions increasing if APD is reduced. They have a figure getting tweeted about (they like large numbers) of 50,000 additional tonnes of emissions. Obviously no source given for this figure.

They also claim the measure will cost £250 million but I’ll leave that as it so idiotic as to be not worthwhile challenging.

I read a little of Transport Scotland’s impact study which came up with a figure of 34,000 tonnes but opened with the proviso that “Transport Scotland does not possess models capable of producing an estimate of the impact on emissions from altering APD.”

I understand a couple of things- firstly that we have to do all we can to limit CO2 emissions. Secondly, I understand how difficult it is to predict the effect of reducing APD on emissions.

What are we trying to achieve? We are trying to get people who would otherwise travel to somewhere else on either business or on holiday to travel to Scotland INSTEAD. Are these additional journeys that would otherwise not have been made? Perhaps some, but mostly the effect will be making it more attractive to conduct business here rather than elsewhere, and more attractive to come here on holiday rather than go elsewhere on holiday.

I don’t get the opposition- for a country that is pretty much on the periphery of Europe, it seems fairly sensible to remove obstacles for people wanting to travel here. As far as I can tell, any increase in emissions will be offset largely by reduced journeys to other places in Europe. And the increase in revenue from tourism and business will be at the expense of other countries.

Are slab just pissed because they didn’t think of it first and are now duty bound to oppose it?

To describe the SNP as climate hypocrites when they have been pushing so hard on renewable technology in the face of Westminster opposition is pretty ridiculous, particularly in light of so many slab MPs voting to bomb Syria. War is not a very green course of action as far as I can tell. So take the plank from thine own eye and aw that.

If its such a crap idea to reduce APD- if they really think it will cost £250 million and don’t think this will be offset by any increased revenues (as is implied by their position) and think it will increase the sum total of emissions of CO2 by a huge amount without being offset by reduced flights elsewhere then why not INCREASE APD?

Why don’t they go to the polls with a policy of making travel to Scotland less attractive?

“Renfrewshire, Scotland. The province has been hit by widespread travel problems as continuous torrential rain and high winds batter Scotland.”

Nah! Frazer, that reference is sure to be their reference to their UK/English Province of Scotland.

As I’ve been pointing out for years the terms UK, Britain and England are all perfectly interchangeable in their version of the standard English Language.

Never forget that little gnome like David Mundell’s sneering claim as he quoted thus from a paper commissioned by the UK government and compiled by two self proclaimed international Law experts.

“The Treaty of Union extinguished the Kingdom of Scotland and renamed the Kingdom of England as the United Kingdom.”

There is not a single shred of written evidence in either the Treaty itself nor in either the Scottish or English Acts of Union that supports that pack of utter lies.

There is, though, ample evidence that there were only two British Kingdom in existence in 1706/7, when the United Kingdom was formed and that these two kingdoms were equally sovereign Kingdoms.

The Kingdom of England annexed, not united with, Wales by the Statute of Rhuddlan, (1248), which, under the then laws of both England and Wales, was the Divine Right of Monarchs. Any monarch who defeated a rival in battle, married into or inherited another realm legally tagged it onto their existing kingdom.

The Kingdom of England, under the same Divine Right, annexed the Kingdom of Ireland by, “The Crown of Ireland Act”, (1542). Divine Right, though, was not Scottish law after, “The Declaration of Arbroath”, (1320). Furthermore the Edinburgh-Northampton Treaty, (1328), shows that England was paid to, and agreed to, accepted Scotland as an independent sovereign Kingdom.

Thus, there was no Union of the Crowns in 1603 for the very good legal reason that the monarch, James VI of Scots, while inheriting the crown of the three country Kingdom of England where he was sovereign could not invoke Divine Right as the People of Scotland were legally sovereign from the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320, and they would not give up their sovereignty as shown by, “The Scottish Claim of Right”, (1689).

In fact The three country Kingdom of England did not change the Divine Right laws until the English Parliament deposed King James II of England after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when they imported King Billy & Queen Mary of Orange. Even then they did not remove the Sovereignty from the new English monarchy which legally remains to this day. They just removed the Royal Veto over Parliament from the Monarchy, but still being independent, could not automatically change the Scottish Monarchy.

It made the three country Kingdom of England a, “Constitutional Monarchy”, but they were still fighting the Jacobite Uprisings almost 40 years after the Treaty of Union of 1706/7, as much of Scotland would not accept the foreign monarchy.

The written legal evidence that Westminster has legal sovereignty over Scotland is totally missing and is at best only due to our Scottish elected representatives claiming they have the people’s mandate by being elected but I cannot say I have seen any legal statement that bears out that belief.

Thus, if either the Westminster members from Scotland or the SG at Holyrood, are elected on a manifesto commitment to withdraw from Westminster it would be perfectly legal to do so.

Immediately after the WoS posting the fund has shot up on turbo-charge in 6 hours to £142,079.

That is a whopping £7,669 – over 10% of what the Orcadians and Shetlanders need.

Meanwhile the fundraiser for Alistair Lying Carmichael has gone from £2,000 as of (https://archive.is/6KTPC) on 9 September 2015 and in the subsequent three months managed to raise an extra £6,000 to hit the £8,325 mark. That is THREE months, for the fibdem MP. Whilst decent democracy can raise the equivalent in 5 to 6 hours.

It is a cold fact that Carmichael’s apologist is raising £2.84 per hour and slowing. Whilst the People-v-Carmichael, by tonight’s reckoning are steaming ahead at £1,278 per hour. Kind of says it all about what the vast majority of Scotland thinks of those who lie, cheat and steal to keep their dishonest political gains.

It makes me proud to be born in Scotland where democracy still exists, no matter how much Westminster tries to kill it and us off.

Pro-Democracy has raised more in 6 hours than the LibDem liars have managed in 12 weeks.

Meanwhile, if you haven’t yet popped a little into the People-v-Carmichael top-up, PLEASE think about it…

Worth mentioning what Thepnr and Lollysmum said:

Those that govern us never wish to see an action of this type ever again, fundraisers now terrify them. When four ordinary folk have the power to take the powerful to court so that they must answer for their actions.

That has to be a worry, make no mistake those judging this case are worried also. this decision will be scrutinised for centuries.

Win or lose, let it be known that there is no hiding place for dishonest politicians.

Stuart you should be proud of the website you created. The people on here are amongst the most decent and fair minded folk I have ever come across.

The Middle East is nuts tonight.

Turkey has basically invaded Iraq and the Iraqis have told them to get out. In response, Turkey is saying it has sent a small army in to Iraq in order to train the Kurds. Just mental.

The US has announced that it is increasing and intensifying its involvement and bombing in Iraq and Syria. Brilliant timing.

We heard today that British jets are armed with air to air missiles and can only guess why since ISIS has no jets.

Chatter in the background tells us that the Russian jet that got shot down definitely did not enter Turkish airspace and if it had they would have invoked article 5 and demanded a NATO response. The indications are that NATO would have responded too.

This situation is going to deteriorate for sure. If we had any sense we’d be at Tesco buying dry foodstuffs and powdered milk.

@Angra that is why the Herald really enraged me. I’ve shaken off a lot of that media stuff, and don’t buy papers, except the National.

I don’t think people realise how horrendous this conflict really is, starting with the horror for the Syrians left, and those in flight.

But, I think there are so many players on the field some of them deranged, and that’s not a reference to Daesh, and the stakes are being raised by the hour.

Added to your list is from Lollysmum, the 4 Russian ships being held by Turkey, which is being reported on Al Jazeera, as tit for tat. The ship’s are being held ‘for inspection’.

‘Scottish fighter pilots’, the majority come from elsewhere.

A higher % pro rata joined the forces in Scotland because of traditionally higher unemployment in Scotland. Now the same. More personel as a % (pro rata) in the Forces are from Scotland.

Many of the ex forces helicopter pilots in the North Sea Oil sector have been given their jotters because of the illegally high tax regime and people voted NO. Workers now have to work three weeks on/three week off shifts. Longer shifts bring more mental health issues, less family social contacts and more family break up. More social problems, drink/drug issues. The Grampian Health Board is the only health authority in Scotland that does not fund primary care for drink/drug issues, increasing the problem.

Helicopters falling from the skies. 4 in 4 years because of lack of compliance with UK Health & Safety Rules. Westminster refused an Inquiry despite the UK Transport Committee recommending one. The BAA (lead by a former pilot) regulator, concurred there was no requirement for an Inquiry, continuing to hide the issues. The Helicopter Company involved in the tragedy sold up two years later for £250Million, without censor.

The UK Gov is deliberately ruining the Scottish economy, because people voted NO. The Oil sector has been ruined because of the illegally high tax 75% Osbourne is deliberately trying to ruin the Scottish economy to try and stop people voting YES. More Oil and Gas has to be imported pulling up the balance of payment deficit and the debt. There is no money to invest in Renewables or CCS for coal because of UK gov cuts.

The Forth Road Bridge is falling down, because of UK Gov cuts. More expensive London Bridges are being built. Crossrail is costing £25Billion, to get Bankers from Canary Wharf to Heathrow 10mins quicker. £25Billion for an expensive Hinkley nuclear Power station which will be years late and over budget. £70Billion for HS2 a ‘white elephant’ without a business case and will make rail journeys throughout Britain even longer. Put more traffic on the roads in the South (cheaper) adding to congestion and increase flights in the North (dearer) Instead of lack of comprehensive rail connection/travel. Anywhere but Heathrow. Expansion to cost £Billions. Wasting taxpayers money,

The Unionists (+ Green who has the casting vote and votes with the status quo – the Unionists. Reneging on Green policies) have ruined the City centre and the local economy, to line their own pockets. Building an unpopular, expensive carbuncle in the City centre, increasing the debt and causing more congestion and health problems. Against the majority wishes and the public interest.

When Scotland has tax raising powers the NO voting tax evaders, will pay their tax to cover the illegal UK deficit/debt imposed on Scotland because they voted NO. Until they vote YES.

    Vote YES SNP/SNP.

I think the big problem they have with all this concerted SNPbad crap is that no one respects newspapers any more. They are held in contempt. It is no longer a respectable profession. On the internet they are just another voice and no one holds McColm or Torquil or Roden’s twitter views as any more important than Joe Bloggs.

They know their market though, Crichton Torquil, Roden and co. Roden’s not very interesting, more emetic inducing perverts, than far right henchman but the greatest was Kelvin MacKenzie. None of today’s grovelers and lackies like Torquil/Roden can come close to Kelvin in his “stick it up your Junta” glory days, and his page 3 pervert frenzy.

They’ve done everything possible to destroy Salmond ofcourse, which may partly be why likes of red/blue toryboys MacDougal, Kevrage, Hothersall flock to them on twitter.
