Wings Over Scotland

Feeling the pain

Posted on July 06, 2017 by

From today’s Scotsman, you can almost physically taste the tormented anguish of the three Unionist party spokesmen that Scotland’s economy isn’t in recession, and has in fact just posted its best growth figures since before the oil-price crash.

Spare them a thought today, won’t you?

I’m sure they know that the most likely cause of a recession is a chorus of a recession being likely. This time they failed, just hope that continues to be the case in the future.

Imagine doing down your own country at every opportunity, every day, on all channels, guns loaded. Scotland must surely be unique in this self flagellation. Oh, wait, it’s the voters they want to brainwash into believing their unionist lies, it’s the voters they want to hit with a stick, while attempting to destroy a democratically elected government who are actually working for the people, not against them.

These people, who would have revelled in this had it been a reality, would have actually loved to have a recession in their own country, are an utter disgrace to Scotland. They disgust me.

Yesterday morning GMS spent the entire programme gleefully talking down the Scottish Economy and as for the yoons especially Fluffy, does he not realise that the ‘Economic Levers’ are all tightly held by Westminster. As for limited powers given to Scotland it’s just as well that SNP is sharp enough to see the yoons trap. Why should Scottish Taxpayers pay twice for services reserved and supposed to be funded from Westminster???

Oh I suppose the Scottish Government could fund more but what would the yoons like us to cancel – leave the Queensferry crossing unopened, stop all work on the Aberdeen by-pass or the duelling of the A9 etc?

I wonder if they realise that by all their negativity they are actually making the case for INDEPENDENCE!!!!

This is what really has me grinding my teeth at night. Scotland’s opposition parties doing down their own country at every turn. And you’re right about their disappointment Rev. Yesterday morning on Radio Shortbread they signposted the news that by around 10 o’clock we’d find out if Scotland was in recession or not. The announcer was like a 10 year old who’s just been told the circus was coming to town. I swear you could hear them rubbing their hands together in expectation.

I agree that opposition parties should challenge the government of the day, but should they connive, spin and lie to the detriment of the very country they aspire to lead? I don’t think so.

    (2) Holyrood being dissolved and the SNP becoming a outlawed party?

It is these Unionist parties at Westminster, in various combinations and governments, who have control over Scotland’s economy. The SNP/SG can only tweak around the edges.

It always strikes me as ultra two faced of the Unionists when one minute they talk as if Scotland were already independent with power over all sorts of issues which are reserved, then in the next breath they switch to reminding us of who pulls the levers, Westminster.

They fought elections like this. Reserved matters are topics of discussion for Holyrood campaigns, devolved issues feature in Westminster elections, and the constitution features centrally in council elections!

Of course it’s all intentional. Smoke and mirrors to keep voters confused and put off politics. Well informed and engaged voters are the biggest threat to their Union.

When you hear the main opposition parties running down not just their political foe the government, but also running down the economy, this undermines confidence.

Low confidence frightens investment in Scotland and those wishing to relocate here be they individuals and or multi-naionals.

Long have I believed the laour branch in Scotland would rather see Scotland poor, stupid and suffering within the union, than rich, intellignet and prospering independnetly.

People are quick to suggest that SNP blame Westminster for all Scotlands problems.

However this is a clear case of the SNP getting blamed for the Scottish economy out performing UK 🙂
At a time when entire UK economy is starting to look sluggish – likely as result of Brexit. In reality Scottish government can only spend the pocket money allocated to them by barnett.
By design the major fiscal levers which could grow, or shrink, the economy remain in London.

If the unionists were a little smarter then would present this as a *good* news story.

“Scotland continues to under-perform the UK economy on an annual basis…”

Thus proving the UNION’s one-size fits all economic approach is harmful to Scotland.

In 1707 the population of Scotland was roughly 25% that of Englands’. Today Scotland’s population is now about 10% of England’s. This depopulation of Scotland was a deliberate London policy designed to undermine and harm Scotland economically. The British Establishment will simply NEVER allow Scotland to be a rival to London.

And the Unionists in Labour, Tory and LD parties turned a blind eye to this economic cleansing of Scotland for generations – allowed it to happen; even encouraged it.

There is truly only ONE major party in Scotland that puts the PEOPLE FIRST and wants to see us flourish as a nation, want to halt the damage the Union is inflicting upon us. No prizes for guessing who. The rest – well they’re just a bunch of CrinGERS.

Since Scotland is joined at the hip to the South British economy and dragged down by the continued weight of futile and counterproductive austerity policies it’s a wonder the Scottish economy is not a complete basket case.

The Unionist politicians in Scotland are now using a short spoon to sup with the devil. Call themselves Scots? We don’t forget how they were rubbing their hands in glee when the oil price dropped and thousands of people lost their jobs. Add to that their demands that Alex Salmond should apologise for something that no one could have predicted. Meanwhile no apology from Labour or Tories in relation to Wilson, Callahan, Heath and subsequent Unionist politicians hiding the true McCrone facts from the Scots and robbing us of a minimum of £300 billion.

Colin MacKay was excellent as a presenter on Scotland Tonight introducing the subject with ”Scotland is now outstripping the UK as a whole.” His approach is also far cry from Brewer and Neil, affording Keith Brown SNP the opportunity to pack in a load of facts and in the process giving Tory Lockhart a real showing up. Well done Keith.

Keith also mentioned that they, the Scottish Tories, seemed to be disappointed that Scotland was doing so well and daftie Lockhart couldn’t keep the grin off of his face. That would have gone down well, NOT, with the viewers. He also highlighted that the Tories, overall, are doing us no favours when he pointed out, twice, that Liam Fox, Tory Trade Minister, has been decrying business leaders as being lazy and said that the Tories should be apologising to Scottish businesses between one thing and another.

As an aside, Colin McKay went on to interview a livid Paddy Hill (Birmingham bombing) and that’s well worth a watch too with Paddy pointing out how he was screwed out of compensation money, tortured and so on. Great to see a presenter actually allowing the interviewee to have his say without constantly interrupting and speaking over them.

The economy is Westminster’s domain. Has Scotland ever had ‘fair dos’ in the Union?

Scotland versus England in the Union. Population is a simple measure of success. Opportunities, jobs, wealth, health, migration etc.. So when did the relative populations of the two countries begin to diverge?

    Some samples from Wiki

    Year / Scotland pop m / England pop m / relative size
    1707 1.0 / 5.2 / 19%
    1801 1.6 / 7.8 / 21%
    1851 2.9 / 15.3 19%
    1871 3.4 / 21.4 16%
    1881 3.7 / 24.4 15%
    1901 4.5 / 30.0 15%
    1911 4.8 / 33.6 14%
    1931 4.8 / 37.0 13%
    1961 5.2 / 41.2 13%
    1991 5.1 / 48.2 11%
    2011 5.3 / 53.0 10%

The two countries appear to grow at similar levels for the first half of the Union.

Then over the second half, a fairly steady deviation, from 1 to 5, reducing 1 to 10.

Simply explained. Basically Scotland never benefited as much from industrialisation which took off big time mid 19thC. Our population emigrated in greater numbers because of fewer opportunities.

I read an interesting comment on an article in News Net Scot. The comment said the voting franchise should be restricted to Scots-born residents only in the next referendum. The commenter pointed out that the UK Gov stopped EU nationals voting and we all know this group would have been heavily Remain.

Should the Scots-born only rule apply next time? After all, it was migrants from the rest of the UK, mostly England, that stopped Scotland becoming independent. Most Scots-born residents voted Yes.

How can we ever hope to become independent if we have a permanent group of residents from the more powerful country always voting to keep us under the the rule of that country?

The article called Scotland a colony. I used to not believe that but as the days go on, I believe it more and more.

    I guess the BBC will already be figuring out how they can make it seem really bad, and completely avoid mentioning that it was funded and planned by the SNP Scottish Government. Let’s see, I’ll have a try at it myself;

‘Salmond’s delayed ‘vanity project’ completely fails to help East Fife commuters. Or, how about, despite overspending on Queensferry crossing, ‘Think tank’ says their is a crisis in Scottish roads’, or maybe’ ‘New Scottish bridge harming wildlife in Forth estuary, says ‘expert’, OR, Tories slam SNP over ‘too small’ Queensferry crossing. Or maybe they can miss out the Scottish link altogether, and just emphasise that workers from many countries worked on it – a headline like, ‘New queensferry crossing is praised by Ruth Davidson as a truly international effort, with workers from all over the UK’.

Maybe we could have a competition on here, in advance of the actual bridge opening, with a prize for whoever can think up the best negative headline for the BBC to use for the bridge opening – which ends up being used by them.

REALLY interesting article Steve. Thanks for pointing it out to us. Brilliant folks. A must read for everyone, imo.

If we are a colony it might make sense to appeal to the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation?

….”More than 80 former colonies comprising some 750 million people have gained independence since the creation of the United Nations. At present, 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories (NSGTs) across the globe remain to be decolonised. Thus, the process of decolonisation has come a long way but is not yet ended. Finishing the job involves a continuing dialogue among the administering Powers, the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation, and the peoples of the territories involved, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions on decolonisation. Reflecting its impatience with the administering Powers, the UN still refers to what it views as “the scourge of colonisation”, calling on member states, and notably the UK, to end this as soon as possible, and for them to be “on the right side of history” in such matters. To a large extent independence and decolonisation are therefore one and the same. Relevant here to Scotland’s present situation is the fact that the UN considers Ireland to be a ‘former colony’; this further indicates that Scotland may indeed be little different given that Ireland was likewise at one time deemed to be a part of the UK ‘union’.”………………….

”Historical census data tells us that the largest single ethnic group of migrants coming to Scotland over the last one hundred years and more has been people from rest-UK, mostly England, and particularly in the professions (science, engineering, education, managerial etc), the latter a typical norm of colonial administration. In recent years inbound migration of people coming from rest-UK to Scotland appears to have accelerated; over the twenty-year period between 1995-2014, around one million people moved from England to Scotland, with peaks of over 70,000 people a year. These recent trends suggest that a further half a million people could migrate from rest-UK to Scotland during the ten-year period between 2014-2024, resulting in a total figure of some 1.5 million migrants over just a 30-year period. For a nation with a population of little over 5 million people, such inflows are indeed very considerable. Over the same period there has been a somewhat lesser outflow of migrants from Scotland seeking opportunities elsewhere. Clearly, though, the population of Scotland is both being boosted and replaced through ‘occupation by settlers’ from rest-UK, primarily England. Scotland is experiencing substantial, focused, and rising occupation by settlers from the administering Power, and thus exhibits the second defining feature of a colony.”……….

”…..Scotland is subject to ongoing economic exploitation by the administering power, and therefore meets the third and final defining feature of a colony. Based on this analysis the answer to the initial question posed undoubtedly appears to be yes; that is, Scotland demonstrates the essential features of a colony. Scotland is clearly subject to full or partial political control by another country; Scotland has been and continues to be occupied by significant numbers of ‘settlers’, and; Scotland is exploited economically by the administering Power.

Interesting reading in the National’s article about the Catalan indy vote coming up this October.

The people of catalonia will go into their referendum on Oct 1st knowing that if the majority vote Yes, the Catalan Government will declare Independence the following day….
the catalan Government is currently in the process of extracting the region from the spanish legal system… because the Spanish government has sofa used court actions and legal cases to block the referendum…

any citizens over 18 will be allowed to vote, including those living abroad.. Spain’s Constitutional Court has already overturned a resolution approved by Catalonia’s Parliament not because it has about 155 of the Spanish population but because it has about 20% of it’s economic wealth…the Spanish defence minister has said that the Army is committed to defending Spain’s national sovereignty.

The Catalans have defined it as… if there are more votes for Yes than No then that’s it.

and finally, but probably most importantly: –
I think the Spanish government will go back to court, but the moves announce today are based on international law and the United Nations Charter of Human Rights which says that all peoples have the right to self-determination.”

The Queensferry Crossing is a magnificent achievement . May I ask the Scottish Government to make the next big ticket infrastructure and policy project the Clyde Global Port initiative so that the Lower Clyde is redeveloped as a smart industrial community with fixed links between the north and south shores, energy generation and challenging the private owners of Clydeport which prevent the blossoming of merchant shipbuilding through its stranglehold on the existing port and river front areas?

Scotland’s future does not lie with our government being sucked in to support HS2 or where the next airport runway is in the South. Scotland’s greatest economic threat has been and continues to be the pull of London. We need to look to the east, the west and the north to develop our economy and not through the prism of the South of England.

    A critique of casino capitalism (UKOK economics)-there is an alternative- the Nordic Model;

‘Underlying the demise of neoliberalism is a financial system out of control. In the years 1980-2014 the financial system grew six times faster than the real economy. The fundamentalist belief driving it is that the sole duty of corporate CEOs is to maximize short-term profits, share prices and dividends. Those perverse incentives are used to justify executive salaries more than 300 times higher than those of average workers; and obscene bonuses…

The share of labor in global GDP has fallen by hundreds of billions annually, while the share of income/wealth enriching the 1% has increased dramatically…

This is why inequality has reached exorbitant levels in our societies. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer by the day. This is why long-term unemployment is built into the system. This is why poverty is increasing amidst plenty. This is why social cohesion is dwindling and polarisation growing. Since our leaders seem to be offering no convincing solutions, feelings of disappointment, resentment, anger and distrust are rising. Our democracy is under siege by the plutocratic elite…
Now we know better. The facts speak for themselves. No matter what criteria we apply, the Nordic model is invariably at the top of the league.

This applies no less to economic performance than other criteria: Economic growth, research and developement, technological innovation, productivity per hour of work, job creation, participation in the labour market, (especially women), equality of the sexes, level of education, social mobility, absence of poverty, health and longevity, quality of infrastructure, access to unspoilt nature, the overall quality of life. Less inequality than in most places. And a vibrant democracy…

What tasks lie ahead? An all-out effort against the financial elite to restrain the forces of inequality and to reclaim the power of democracy. An unyielding solidarity with Europe’s youth, who have been left to fend for themselves in the queues of the unemployed, bereft of hope. And take up the fight for the preservation of the environment and our common future on this planet…

    1. Sanitise the corrupt financial system and put it back firmly under democratic control
    2. Massive investment in clean and renewable energy to replace fossil fuels as the life-blood of our economies. This is an urgent task which calls for social democrats and environmentalists to work together to save our planet
    3. Start planning now how to tackle the consequences of the technological revolution which is ongoing all around us (IT, digitization and automation)‘

    https://www.socialeurope.eu/2017/07/what-can-we-learn-from-the-nordic-model/

An excellent template for a better future for an independent Scotland within a Europe that is reforming with a strong commitment to social rights and human dignity. Little wonder that the elite Brexiteers want out of Europe and to keep Scotland shackled to the disunited kingdom- a growing Scottish economy feeds the magic money tree that Scotland has no access to. Much easier to subdue the masses if you can remove their rights, exploit them in perpetuity, consign them to in work poverty, trample over their aspirations and have them vote for it.

So I was on the ferry earlier after nearly 3 days out of touch from the internet, and I heard this sound coming from the mists, this wail, this anguished cry as though it came from a thousand demented mouths. A deep, dark cry of pain, intense hurt and disappointment, sadness, biterness, madness, and deep deep longing for something better.

And now I’m finding out what I missed. Was it because of Hector, dragged as formerly in a chariot, his hair clotted with blood? Or was it Achilles having had a cleg bite on his heel? Perhaps it was the cry of the millions upon millions of those tortured for political gain or just for kicks? Maybe just Demosthenes having had a glimpse at the quality of UK Government utterances?

No, no, I just found out what it was.

It was Scotland NOT being in recession, in fact outperforming the UK in growth by a factor of 4, and Ruth Davidson’s holiday ruined, ruined, ruined, by good news for Scotland.

Just as well the majority see through them. The cheats and lars will never win.

The best Scotland has ever been governed is by the SNP Gov. In spite of the Westminster criminals. Scotland’s a better, more prosperous place. In spite of the unionists lars taking £20Billion out of Scotland a year. In mismanagement and downright thievery. Never trust a unionist Party, especially in Scotland.

The Tories are on their way out. A complete lamb duck Gov. Their policies are causing recession. Brexit. They will cause another world recession. They will be gone before too long, a bunch of complete incompetent. No one believes a word they say in Scotland.

The majority in Scotland know the best way forward is Independence in the EU. To stop the Westminster crooks and charlatans. Even the majority in England now support EU membership. 60%.

Just needs a further push for Scotland to gain Independnce in the EU. It is so close now. It is within distance. For Scotland to be a better, more equal fairer prosperous country. Getting away from any control of the Westminster illegal lying crooks and murderers.

Bring it one. Scotland Independent in the EU. Like most prosperous wealthy countries. Caring for the people and the rest of the world,

The unionists Parties are disgusting. No wonder so few people join them, especially in Scotland. The majority can see though them.

The BBC is finished. Low readers/viewer. More money is sent on administration than making programmes. Totally out of touch. An out of touch monstrosity. Eating itself. People get their information from other sources. The BBC is a puppet laughing stock. A total waste of £3,7Billion. Just wait until the outcry when the salaries are publshed. The ‘Press’ are in total debt. Becoming more and more irrelevant. White noise in the background. A symphony of nonsense. No one believe the nonsense anymore. The Emperor has no clothes. Illegally owned by Non Dom tax evaders. Crooks and criminals breaking International Law.

Scotland is being dragged down by the lying unionist crooks and spivs at Westminster. That will not be going on for very much longer. Shortly these liars will be gone. The history of the bonfire of the vanities The usual suspects divine right to rule lost. Into oblivion with the lot of them. Good riddance and goodbye.

This raises the question of what was the source of said flags?

Had each one of the crowd gone to a local shop or street vendor and bought said flag?

Or is it more likely that the flags had been dished out for free by some organisation?

    “Oh I remember now!
Tony Blair, where the gap between rich and poor grew wider under him than it had been under Thatcher.

Yes, Peter, and it was under a Labour government that the main burden of taxation was changed from direct taxation, (upon earnings and wealth), to indirect taxation, (upon goods & services).

The whole ethos behind that move was to transfer the main burden of taxation from the rich to the poor.

Where before the main taxation was by PAYE and upon profits and wealth. Certainly we had, “Purchase Tax”, but this was only levied upon such items as the most expensive luxury vehicles and such things as expensive imported French perfumes and things like expensive animal fur coats.

Then it became VAT, Road Fuel Duty, Alcohol Duty, Betting Tax, Tobacco Duty and upon services of all kinds. Everyone, whether they are the actual buyer of goods and services or simply the users of such goods & services must pay those indirect taxes.

Yet today much of Joe & Josephine Public still cannot free themselves from the mental thought process that centres upon income tax and wealth tax and never seem to understand that income tax and taxation upon wealth & profits is now of secondary importance.

Now Westminster duns the poorest and most vulnerable and least able to pay taxes while giving increasingly more generous tax breaks for those best able to pay by direct taxation.

That is the whole idea of changing direct taxation to indirect taxation. That is to transfer the main burden of taxation to the poorest in society.

As long as the general public cannot get their collective heads round the simple fact that this is a deliberate plan by Westminster to make the rich ever more rich and the poor ever increasingly poorer there will continue to be an ever wider gap between the haves and the those who have not.

Yes, substitute Scotland for ‘the UK’ here and you might think the BoE £ was a millstone round Scotland’s neck:

‘First, the UK has its own currency. And, as importantly, over 99% of its debt is denominated in that currency. What that means is that, unlike Greece, it does not need to earn what is, in effect, a foreign currency to pay its debts. It pays it with its domestic currency, and that means its ability to repay is dependent on what income generation happens in the UK and is not related in any way to what it can earn from outside it, which is Greece’s alternative priority. This means the UK’s capacity to repay is vastly greater than Greece’s: domestic earnings massively outweigh external ones in both cases.’

Two barrage tidal schemes (Humber) etc would cost half the price and produce more energy. HS2 will cost £Billions and always be subsidised. There is no market for it. It will put up prices and make journeys longer for all travellers. The present rail system needs improvement. Not a two tiered subsidised more costly system. Not required. Redundant squint Trident. Heathrow nit needed. More travel regionally. Less costly travel. Direct flights. Space induced travel.
