From today’s Scotsman, you can almost physically taste the tormented anguish of the three Unionist party spokesmen that Scotland’s economy isn’t in recession, and has in fact just posted its best growth figures since before the oil-price crash.
Spare them a thought today, won’t you?
Envy is such a destructive and ugly emotion.
Are they even trying not to sound disappointed by the figures for this quarter?
I’m sure they know that the most likely cause of a recession is a chorus of a recession being likely. This time they failed, just hope that continues to be the case in the future.
They just cannot help themselves, there is an old saying, never let a lie get in the way of a good story
It would suit all 3 to see Scotland go down the tube as there remit will always be that we are not fit to be independent as we will always need England to bale us out.A bunch of barstewards all of them.

Imagine doing down your own country at every opportunity, every day, on all channels, guns loaded. Scotland must surely be unique in this self flagellation. Oh, wait, it’s the voters they want to brainwash into believing their unionist lies, it’s the voters they want to hit with a stick, while attempting to destroy a democratically elected government who are actually working for the people, not against them.
These people, who would have revelled in this had it been a reality, would have actually loved to have a recession in their own country, are an utter disgrace to Scotland. They disgust me.
Yesterday morning GMS spent the entire programme gleefully talking down the Scottish Economy and as for the yoons especially Fluffy, does he not realise that the ‘Economic Levers’ are all tightly held by Westminster. As for limited powers given to Scotland it’s just as well that SNP is sharp enough to see the yoons trap. Why should Scottish Taxpayers pay twice for services reserved and supposed to be funded from Westminster???
Oh I suppose the Scottish Government could fund more but what would the yoons like us to cancel – leave the Queensferry crossing unopened, stop all work on the Aberdeen by-pass or the duelling of the A9 etc?
I wonder if they realise that by all their negativity they are actually making the case for INDEPENDENCE!!!!

This is what really has me grinding my teeth at night. Scotland’s opposition parties doing down their own country at every turn. And you’re right about their disappointment Rev. Yesterday morning on Radio Shortbread they signposted the news that by around 10 o’clock we’d find out if Scotland was in recession or not. The announcer was like a 10 year old who’s just been told the circus was coming to town. I swear you could hear them rubbing their hands together in expectation.
I agree that opposition parties should challenge the government of the day, but should they connive, spin and lie to the detriment of the very country they aspire to lead? I don’t think so.
Someone (never going to be a journalist) should ask the leaders of the branch offices the following question.
What would you rather
(1) Holyrood continuing as is (with the SNP being the government)?
or
(2) Holyrood being dissolved and the SNP becoming a outlawed party?
They would waffle and twist and turn but I honestly think they would take (2).

It is these Unionist parties at Westminster, in various combinations and governments, who have control over Scotland’s economy. The SNP/SG can only tweak around the edges.
It always strikes me as ultra two faced of the Unionists when one minute they talk as if Scotland were already independent with power over all sorts of issues which are reserved, then in the next breath they switch to reminding us of who pulls the levers, Westminster.
They fought elections like this. Reserved matters are topics of discussion for Holyrood campaigns, devolved issues feature in Westminster elections, and the constitution features centrally in council elections!
Of course it’s all intentional. Smoke and mirrors to keep voters confused and put off politics. Well informed and engaged voters are the biggest threat to their Union.
I had the misfortune to hear them talking thus on the radio yesterday. Their disappointment was palpable.
I didn’t know whether to laugh at the predictability of their response or cry with sheer frustration.
Confidence!
Confidence is key for an economy.
When you hear the main opposition parties running down not just their political foe the government, but also running down the economy, this undermines confidence.
Low confidence frightens investment in Scotland and those wishing to relocate here be they individuals and or multi-naionals.
Long have I believed the laour branch in Scotland would rather see Scotland poor, stupid and suffering within the union, than rich, intellignet and prospering independnetly.
No better example exists than fron the red tory baillie!

Since Scotland is joined at the hip to the South British economy and dragged down by the continued weight of futile and counterproductive austerity policies it’s a wonder the Scottish economy is not a complete basket case.
Given that any figures published are likely to be extrapolated from the overall picture of the UK economy and are inherently uncheckable any conclusions (as reported by the Scotsman) are basically an elaborate fiction.
There are no stats available which reflect a neutral economic position they are all filtered through a political lens.

The Unionist politicians in Scotland are now using a short spoon to sup with the devil. Call themselves Scots? Colin MacKay was excellent as a presenter on Scotland Tonight introducing the subject with ”Scotland is now outstripping the UK as a whole.” His approach is also far cry from Brewer and Neil, affording Keith Brown SNP the opportunity to pack in a load of facts and in the process giving Tory Lockhart a real showing up. Well done Keith.
Keith also mentioned that they, the Scottish Tories, seemed to be disappointed that Scotland was doing so well and daftie Lockhart couldn’t keep the grin off of his face. That would have gone down well, NOT, with the viewers. He also highlighted that the Tories, overall, are doing us no favours when he pointed out, twice, that Liam Fox, Tory Trade Minister, has been decrying business leaders as being lazy and said that the Tories should be apologising to Scottish businesses between one thing and another.
As an aside, Colin McKay went on to interview a livid Paddy Hill (Birmingham bombing) and that’s well worth a watch too with Paddy pointing out how he was screwed out of compensation money, tortured and so on. Great to see a presenter actually allowing the interviewee to have his say without constantly interrupting and speaking over them.

I think when any Tory like Dean Lockhart comments on the SG’s handling of the economy he should be reminded that the national debt of £1.8 trillion has doubled since the Tories returned to power.

I agree with what you say. But such change will not happen until such time as we have a Scottish Government with its MP’s and MSP’s prepared to speak openly and often about the clear benefits to Scotland from running our own affairs. Sadly, that is something the SNP no longer does.

The two countries appear to grow at similar levels for the first half of the Union.
Then over the second half, a fairly steady deviation, from 1 to 5, reducing 1 to 10.

Keith Brown was excellent in that interview on STV. Never lost his rag, but, was firm and pushed home his point about opposition always tearing good news about Scotland down.
We need more SNP politicians taking these detractors on like this. No more “Mr Nice Guy” stuff, call them out for the damage they are doing.
Colin Mackay did a good job too in challenging on each side and didn’t give Lockhart, with his facile non argument, the easy ride we have come to expect from most interviewers.

It won’t win the war but I get tremendous personal satisfaction by doing my bit, weekly, for my country’s future, however minutely.
I look at the teacakes, soup tins etc (and now Highland Spring) all on the shelves, staunchly demanding that I, a cringing Scot, must buy them, and I quietly say to myself,

Obviously, the SNP and their focus on independence has galvanised the Scottish economy and boosted confidence. More of the same is required and the opposition parties must call for a greater emphasis on independence. It grows the magic money tree.

You can hear and feel them choking on their words, desperate to find justification to put down Scotland because it’s in the hands of the SNP. Unrelated topic I know but I’m curious to hear the thoughts of others on here.
I read an interesting comment on an article in News Net Scot. The comment said the voting franchise should be restricted to Scots-born residents only in the next referendum. The commenter pointed out that the UK Gov stopped EU nationals voting and we all know this group would have been heavily Remain.

I should clarify that I think all residents, regardless of where they were born, should have a vote. If you live here, work here and contribute then you should get a vote on the country’s future as it will affect you.

Was there not some Tory MP, maybe 3-4 years ago, who suggested Westminster funded projects in Scotland should have plaques with Union flags to remind rebellious Scots who pays for their infrastructure projects. Then it was pointed out that WM hasn’t had any such any such construction projects in Scotland in recent times.

The fact is, the Queensferry Crossing, like so-much of the UK infrastructure since the 18th century would not have been built without the efforts of an awful lot of “Paddies” – ie citizens of the Republic of Ireland.

The majority in Scotland know the best way forward is Independence in the EU. To stop the Westminster crooks and charlatans. Even the majority in England now support EU membership. 60%.
Just needs a further push for Scotland to gain Independnce in the EU. It is so close now. It is within distance. For Scotland to be a better, more equal fairer prosperous country. Getting away from any control of the Westminster illegal lying crooks and murderers.

On the BBC News coverage of The Queen opening the new Quenn Elizabeth The Second???? Canal I couldn’t help noticing that the crowd were waving a forest of miniature Butchers’ Aprons with not a Saltire in sight.
This raises the question of what was the source of said flags?
Had each one of the crowd gone to a local shop or street vendor and bought said flag?
Or is it more likely that the flags had been dished out for free by some organisation?
If the latter who was responsible and out of whose budget were they paid for?

Yes, Peter, and it was under a Labour government that the main burden of taxation was changed from direct taxation, (upon earnings and wealth), to indirect taxation, (upon goods & services).
The whole ethos behind that move was to transfer the main burden of taxation from the rich to the poor.
Where before the main taxation was by PAYE and upon profits and wealth. Certainly we had, “Purchase Tax”, but this was only levied upon such items as the most expensive luxury vehicles and such things as expensive imported French perfumes and things like expensive animal fur coats.
Then it became VAT, Road Fuel Duty, Alcohol Duty, Betting Tax, Tobacco Duty and upon services of all kinds. Everyone, whether they are the actual buyer of goods and services or simply the users of such goods & services must pay those indirect taxes.
Yet today much of Joe & Josephine Public still cannot free themselves from the mental thought process that centres upon income tax and wealth tax and never seem to understand that income tax and taxation upon wealth & profits is now of secondary importance.
Now Westminster duns the poorest and most vulnerable and least able to pay taxes while giving increasingly more generous tax breaks for those best able to pay by direct taxation.
That is the whole idea of changing direct taxation to indirect taxation. That is to transfer the main burden of taxation to the poorest in society.
As long as the general public cannot get their collective heads round the simple fact that this is a deliberate plan by Westminster to make the rich ever more rich and the poor ever increasingly poorer there will continue to be an ever wider gap between the haves and the those who have not.

Those flags were handed out by some flunky, the same happens regularly eg the chidren in Fijii recently visited by the Scottish ruby team. There was also a case in West Central Scotland during a visit by Prince William and Kate. Saltires were taken from the children and they were given Union Flags.

Heathrow nit needed. More travel regionally. Less costly travel. Direct flights. Space induced travel.

Thank you for this reference – I was alive to the establishment of the FAI and brief conversations at that time often mentioned a bona-fide Scotland ‘Input-Output’ table.
From time to time I have since wondered why we have not had public airings of such data. Knowing the origins of the FAI makes this a bit more clear.
