Walking like a peasant
So this story is the front page of tonight’s Evening Times.
It’s a pretty slim piece deploying a Glasgow mother to attack the SNP-run city council over a recent increase in nursery fees, and it sounds like the new higher cost might be a pretty big deal to her.
“Marisa Murdoch, a TV production worker from the west end of Glasgow, has a five year-old son who is starting school this year and a one and a half year-old younger son who is in a council nursery part time.
She said nursery provision allowed her to return to work part time and was intending to return to work full time in November when her youngest turns two but has now had to reconsider her plans.
She said: “It is frustrating to say the least. If someone had said we need to increase the fees and it will improve the service and transform the system for everyone then that would have been more acceptable. I’m now looking at what I will have to earn to have my son in nursery full time.”
What was surprising was that the ET didn’t feel it was worth mentioning that in addition to being a “TV production worker”, Marisa is also the wife of Stuart Murdoch, from the celebrated Glasgow emo stalwarts Belle And Sebastian:
And given that Belle And Sebastian have sold millions of albums and concert tickets over the course of their career, including selling out the 18,000-seater Hollywood Bowl on several occasions, and are currently flogging their own Mediterranean cruise-liner festival at which the cheapest pleb-class steerage berths (not including travel) are £519 and the more luxurious options are £7,000 a head (plus taxes and fees):
…we could forgive readers a certain degree of scepticism over whether council nursery provision going from £2.54 an hour to £4 (still below the UK average) is really going to be a make-or-break deal for the band’s families.
Of course, lots of other people will be struggling with that stiff increase too (though households earning under £30,000 will be exempt), thanks to the highly challenging financial circumstances facing the council after it was landed with a £1 billion bill for its Labour predecessor’s prolonged failure to give women employees equal pay.
Indeed, Labour spent millions of pounds cynically fighting the women it had cheated in the courts for over a decade – enough on legal costs alone to have covered/postponed the nursery fee increase for two years, or phased it in much more gently. Many of them died before seeing a penny of the money they’d been robbed of.
Yet having run Glasgow for 75 of the last 84 years (including an unbroken 39 years before the SNP won in 2017) and being solely and entirely responsible for the huge weight now chained around the council’s neck, Labour didn’t let it stop them – in a display of brassnecked dishonesty breathtaking even by their standards – blaming the party that’s been in charge for less than a year:
It’s always worth seeing things in context, readers. And if you’re a newspaper looking to take a swipe at the SNP for trying to clean up Labour’s mess, that probably also includes the people you get to front your stories.
Nice piece of investigative journalism.

The charges only apply to those earning over £30k pa and are giving those who earning less than that more free hours. The previous Labour administration applied charges to those earning over £25k and gave fewer free hours to qualifying parents.

With regard to Mr Murdoch’s chronic illness, if he has suffered this for decades then it must have been present when he was making the big bucks.
I assume he is still earning, the missus is still receiving a financial contribution from him, so why does she need to work. Unlike many much poorer Mums in Glasgow who have to find the money from somewhere.
I have no idea of the murdochs net wealth or income, but any family that has health issues and young children to care for, irrespective of income, will be aware of the criticality of nursery care for the social development of the children and functioning of the family. They may or may not be financially impacted by the price rise, but they will understand the impact of other families in similar circumstances but may have less financial indepednace (or not) than them to access to support and caring.

Stupid of Evening Times to use such an example as there are many ordinary folk that are going to be hit hard by this rise, and Yes Glasgow is financially in a mess a legacy of Labour misrule.
However the amount raised by these rises is comparatively small, I think it was stupid of SNP in Glasgow go go for this in this manner a stepped increase over several years would have achieved this, or guaranteeing that only new starts will pay the new scales.
To give you some context, a young single parent, working full time has 2 kids in nursery, 5 hours a day, cost just under £4000 a year, will have to find an additional £2400, now that is a chunk of money in anyones book
Sorry to say that my party has badly misjudged this one and handed Labour in Glasgow a huge stick to beat them with. Remember in Glasgow many seats are fairly marginal, this has done damage and a political price will be paid.

As for Johan Lamont, she is the saddest figure in Scottish Politcs. When ever she rises in Holyrood to ask a question, you can hear a collective sigh from her own benches. EVERY SINGLE TIME a ‘newspaper’ reports something like this it turns out that the person being quoted (cue eponymous put-upon hardworking mother of two) is either a politician, related to a politician or she is (relatively speaking) rich.
The article will be a reverse of the truth (I don’t mean a lie) For example, on misreporting Scotland we saw a ‘reporter’ standing next to a motorway talking to a suit in a hardhat and complaining about months of delays, diversions and ‘traffic chaos’ at ‘one of the busiest times of year’ when what he was ACTUALLY telling us about was a HUGE investment in the road network by the SNP Government to build a new section of motorway to REDUCE congestion long-term.
It’s amazing that when you dig beneath the headline the ‘story’ seems to evaporate and those who they ‘blame’ are actually the ones doing all the hard work to improve things for us.
Once again proving what we already knew, our press are beyond biased, they simply propagandise for the unionists and have no interest in truthful, honest and unbiased reporting of the facts…
I am a Scottish independence supporter and have voted for SNP for a number of years.
The stuff that is being written above about Marisa is nonsense. Her comments are not related to an anti SNP viewpoint and it’s a bad day when a someone can’t complain about something that is having an impact on them without a lot of personal / unvalidated nonsense getting written about them. Who her husband is, the job she does or how much she earns is no ones business but theres. Treating people like this is counter productive to getting a majority in next indieref vote. Although not my favourite band having met a few of them I’ve found that they are decent folk who have also done benefits for Syrian refugees and other good causes not likely to be regarded positively by the right wing press. As far as I recall many of them were pro independence during the referendum so slagging them off is stupid. We need to win more people over to getting independence for Scotland and if we were to attack everyone who lives in Glasgow just cause they speak out against something crap the Council has done then we’ll have to attack the majority of people who live here.
