Sadly for May her contradictory red lines mean there can be no credible backstop for NI. Schrodingers brexit : Northern Ireland simply can’t be in and out of the customs unions at the same time. Plus her parliamentary dependency on the DUP means the only credible option of a sea border has been taken off the table…

I believe some other Wingers have posted on this, but, could maybe a Scottish Government approach to the European Court of Justice get a declaration that Scotland can stay-in, in view of the fact, we voted overwhelmingly to do this, and, the other equal partner in the United Kingdom insists we leave with them.

Chequers has been dead since inception. It’s only been kept alive on May’s insistence and by the UKOK lying media. It’s value might have been to say something was on the table of discussion.
My understanding is that the EU didn’t shoot it down immediately to give May a lifeline – agree to the Irish backstop and the EU will accept a fuzzy statement on future trade which sounds a bit like Chequers. Thus Brexit is achieved, Ireland has all it wants, there is a transition, and over the next couple of years something like Canada or Norway will be agreed.
May screwed up on Ireland big time and the lifeline was hauled back.
So, unlike the movie scene Rev Stu highlighted, May tried the same sort of trick and in response everyone shouted as one … “go on then, pull the trigger!”

All the way and then some Robert. For all those who have seen (and it is well worth watching if you haven’t) The Spiders Web gives a clue to the extent of the wealth hidden in the tax havens, much of it old establishment money.
It didn’t say it, but given how much of it was from the asset stripping of Colonies, one of the oldest, most aristocratic of families, quite probably have their hands all over the levers of Brexit No Deal. How very patriotic they are being – in a funny sort of way.

I’ve no idea where we are going to go next or if we will even get a deal with the EU, Chequers is floating belly up and is the stuff of nightmares. Corbyn or Johnson as Prime Minister, totally unbelievable and yet it will happen.

Her palm will most definitely be crossed with silver at some later date, however I am not sure it will have been worth the ten years loss of life she will probably suffer due to the mental and physical stress of the whole thing.
We are in a revolutionary moment. The gateway to independence is right in front of Scotland except there is no gate- just a line that we all need to walk over, together.
‘The UK has not done a very good job. The last year and a half has not been very productively spent in terms of negotiations with the EU because we have only even recently come to an agreement on what a future relationship with the EU might even look like (Chequers) and that is more an agreed disagreement than an agreed agreement. Nobody really seems to like it apart from the government. There has been very little movement on the NI issue, we haven’t even talked about Gibraltar and nor have we said anything about the only issue that most people agree the referendum was actually about, immigration…
How is this country going to handle discussions of immigration which are going to be at the core of any agreement with the EU when we are now only six months before the exit date? From a negotiation point of view, it has been slow and given that these two years were supposed to be about negotiations, then the EU side has said to us: why did you even submit your Article 50 notice without having made all these internal decisions first?.I think we are dealing with a revolutionary moment, constitutionally a revolutionary moment. We don’t know if the current parties will survive in their current form. We know there is a gulf of opinion between London and a few other centres in the UK and the rest of the country’

There’s got to be an increased chance of Brexit being cancelled altogether, with the no deal shambles, the (yay) ECJ ruling, and we have to be ready for that when talking to people. Some answers to possible questions like “will there still be another Indy Ref?”.
My hope would be that even if not committed before people will be so pissed off with the whole ridiculous waste of money, jobs, companies, working days, that they would be near YES, so maybe the answer is “yes I hope so, we need to take control of our own destinsy and not be at the mercy of Westminster Tory party splits and greed for power of its senior members”. Something like that.
So if the final outcome in UK is to remain in the European union whether by a people’s vote or change of gov. do we no longer have a legit reason for second Scot ref.

Am I the only one to be gobsmacked that there is no mention on the BBC news or Channel 4 of the Court of Session ruling today? It was covered on the BBC news where we are (Reporting Scotland) but this was a story of great importance to the whole UK which happened to originate in Scotland. If an English citizen (or is it subject?) had gone to the English High Court and got a ruling that he or she could take a case to the ECJ on the critical issue of whether Article 50 could be stopped by a decision of the UK government alone, would that not have been reported as a particularly pertinent twist to the Brexit story? Think of the Gina Miller case and the coverage that got – is this not just as important a case?
Of course I know the answer – Scottish courts and Scottish people don’t really matter in all this. We are just a slight irritant in the debate being held by our grown up cousins in England. But we may get the last laugh – the ECJ will not care which nation’s courts made the referral. They will just rule on the question asked and when they do, no doubt the media’s reaction will be “S**t, where did that come from?”
I really don’t like being an afterthought. Please, please let’s use this chaos to bring about independence sooner rather than later.

I’m pretty sure Nicola has told us enough times what she will do in the event of a “no deal” Brexit. Now I take it that you can include a “no detail” brexit right alongside that.
It says to me that we will learn soon when the next referendum is going to be if either of the above come to pass. If the Tories miraculously survive in government and obtain any kind of deal that does not include the SM and CU membership for Scotland we will have a referendum early next year is my view.
Fly in the ointment, the Tories don’t survive much longer and another General Election is called, that importantly they don’t win. That scenario will buy the UK some more time as far as another referendum is concerned.
Won’t matter what happens. We’re gonna do it anyway 🙂

When you understand that Labour/Tory and Mini me Tories are all serving the same institute and have their parts to play, and when you look at Brexit – not at face value – but from the point of view of the 1% who have for 100’s of years stashed and stolen and never paid tax, suddenly being held to account. They’re like cornered rats. They will quite happily trash the whole of the UK’s economy to keep themselves rich, rather than pay their fair share of taxes.
It is really hard not to get caught up in the practicalities of this type of deal or that type of deal with Brexit. But if the plan all along is for no deal, to avoid the ECJ at all costs because of its tax laws. Then the motives and game plan are very different and so is the time scale.
The tax laws being implemented by the EU affect the 1%, the elite, the establishment, and they have never faced such a threat before, not on whole, not in the west.
To put it in perspective. WW1 and WW2 both made them a great deal of money. And for a while Hitlers regime didn’t bother them too much, they would have fit into it quite nicely – they could have done a deal.
The only real deal they are trying to broker, is a revoke or relaxation of the EU tax laws on the tax havens. And I have no idea how that’s going, but if your leverage is to say, look what damage we will do to both our economies, help us and we’ll help your 1%, then I think their bluff has been called. The EU can change the tax laws for their own 1% the day after Brexit, and why wouldn’t they.
Right just now and for the next 6 months they are going to see significant industry relocations to mainland Europe.
In my opinion, Brexit does not add up, unless you look at it from the Tax Law perspective.
Thinking out loud here a bit, but hey.

Been thinking about it, and yes that’s a likely scenario.

No deal is what they intended all along.

Any snap Indyref2 is nothing more than a gamble and an immense one at that.
Polls are going to have to show 47% YES consistently over a3 month period (ergo til next year) or we lose.
May’s position was bought from the DUP, but, there is no sitting parliament at Stormont – ergo, no support. A snap GE and she can lose then retire to the Lords as an ex-PM and kick the can (also, maybe knock more seats from the SNP, though that’s now unlikely)
Any other scenario and she is on the broo and Scotland sets timetables. So, unless she is being very well compensated to continue, or insane, I’d be preparing for a snap GE.
The SNP may or may not wish to stand on an Indy ticket for it, that’s their judgement. Tricky though – Much as I’d like to see it, my number crunching says, there is a better chance not to and let the stats climb to 47% in the stramash period for a few month, then call it. Failing that target, stretch out to the Scot Elections on an Indy ticket, or if the 47% target is hit before it – call Indyref2.
But that’s a post for another day.
In the meantime, if there turns out no snap GE, then we still get time to climb to the target.

Dearie dearie me, I missed this article in the Herald yesterday “Which? raps three Scottish universities over online claims”. For instance according to the article:
“Aberdeen University said it was ranked consistently among the world’s top universities, but did not verify the claim, according to the consumer group.”
So a quick google gives 26368 universities worldwide, and another google finds the Grun’s usual annual tables where Aberdeen is 158th equal. Last year 164th.
That’s in the top 1%, in fact it’s in the top 0.62%. Don’t know about you, but I’d call that “ranked consistently among the world’s top universities” (at least for 2 years, I didn’t bother going further back).
Not the first time Which has picked on Scotland, their report named 3 unis in Scotland out of a total of 6 in the UK. Well fuck off.
Aberdeen Uni 2016 = 141st equal, 2015 137th equal. I can’t be bothered doing any more, 4 years is “consistently” enough for me.

I do online surveys for a number of companies (YouGov, Opinium, Populus, etc) and at least one of them (I forget which) has regularly presented me with a list of review sites, including Which?,and asked me whether I have not heard of them, heard of them but never used them, used them, consider them my first port of call, etc. I’ve also been given a load of adjectives, including “trusted”, and asked whether I’d apply them to the various reviewers.
Presumably that or similar is the source of their claim. Every time I’m asked that question, Which? is the only one from the list I’ve ever used, but by now of course I’ve heard of all the others because I keep getting surveyed about them!
Having said that, I agree with you entirely about the nonsensical way they have categorized the universities.
A snap indyref2 would catch the yoons by surprise there’s no way yes would lose it would have to be 100% rigged for a no vote for that to happen yes support maybe 47% but yes is winning as UK support is 43% that’s with most noers becoming undecided now we can beat them outright and they know it hence why they are out to stop indyref2 at any cost.

Thanks for that, so there are surveys. Still, their complaint was that Aberdeen made the claim but didn’t back it up, and they are guilty of exactly the same “sin” – they don’t have a link to any surveys they had to prove they’re “trusted”. Personally I don’t use their reviews, I didn’t find them very good a few years ago and haven’t bothered since.
