Wings Over Scotland

The darkest hour

Posted on December 21, 2017 by

Today, on the shortest day of the worst year in recent memory, the people of Catalonia will vote in an election under the control of a brutally repressive government which has unjustly dissolved their devolved parliament, imprisoned their democratically-elected leaders, viciously beaten hundreds of voters for no crime other than trying  to vote, and banned almost all types of expression of public support for Catalan independence, including outlawing colours of the rainbow.

All this has happened within the borders of civilised free Europe, and the other nations of that great continent have largely either turned a blind eye to Catalonia’s suffering, or actively sided with the Spanish regime. Many people fear that today’s election will be rigged, or that if pro-independence parties win the result will simply be ignored and the election re-run until the “right” result is arrived at.

The UK media has barely acknowledged the election is taking place, even though it appears that many of the most cherished and fundamental human rights and freedoms of the West are at stake in it. (Or perhaps precisely for that reason.)

For members of peaceful self-determination movements across the world, including in Scotland, the stakes could barely be higher. Madrid has demonstrated in the starkest possible terms that power devolved is power retained, and events in Barcelona today could be events in Edinburgh tomorrow.

(And if that seems overly melodramatic, ask yourself who would ever have imagined a 21st-century democracy sending in riot police, in full view of the eyes of the world, to literally drag blood-soaked elderly women out of polling stations by the hair?)

All we can do is watch and hope that justice prevails, and that the darkest hours do prove to be those that come before a bright new dawn.

Middle and working classes only provide the labour and economic base to maintain an elite.

I hope the people of Catalonia choose better than we did in 2014, but I suspect no matter what they choose ,the final outcome will somehow go in favour of Spain. Whatever means necessary to attain that final outcome, will be used. Of that I have no doubt.

But then I never imagined that I’d hear a UK Prime Minister define child homelessness as not sleeping in the streets.May is as cold as the grave. And yes, I can imagine her sending in the riot police to Edinburgh following a Yes vote.

In Scotland, and of course some similar, modern, civilised countries, we have the workings of a competent government at the helm in Holyrood, which is at least trying to be fair, and a government of and for the people.

Send positive vibes to Catalunya today folks, and no I am not going all hippy :-). Ha!

Labour ceased to be The, “Party of Workers and human rights”, almost as soon as Kier Hardie took his seat in Westminster to uphold the rights of his English Constituents.

The truth of the matter is that Hardie, the father of the Labour Party, never represented a Scottish constituency in his political career.

His supposed manifesto promise of Home Rule for Scotland was never, by the Labour Party, ever more than lip-service, (like so many other Labour Party mantas), that they never, while in power, attempted to introduce.

Labour were, and are, internationalists until the Blair/Brown era when they eventually also threw in that particular towel to become what they always really were – WESTMINSTER ESTABLISHMENT UNIONISTS.

Strange why the EU is showing its teeth to the obnoxious Polish government but not to Spain. There are serious issues about the EU which reduce its attractiveness to an independent Scotland. The YES Movement needs to frame an independence narrative which is not predicated on an early membership application. We need to be seen to be in control of our future and not be perceived as weak. The key to this is to ensure the funding of our public services is from a source not affected by global markets and individual incomes. Our land through Annual Ground Rent provides that source. Goos to see that the Land Commission is requesting tenders for a report on international examples of AGR/LVT.

I used to be a regular eater of chorizo. Since the events of October 1, 2017 no more. Unless Aldi stock that German chorizo I bought once again. I have found other spiced sausage products and have recently made my own black pudding and used that in place too. It is remarkably easy and cheap. I found tubs of frozen pig’s blood in our local Dundee Chinese Supermarket for not much money. Two large bore black puddings.

No special equipment required, I stuffed the skins with a serving spoon. Skins from a sausage making site for pennies each. Large bore plastic, string tied ends. Other skins are usable, I happen to like my black pudding large diameter. Blood, oats, suet, salt, pepper, spices. Mix, put in skins, simmer at 80-85C for 2hrs for large bore and less for smaller diameter skins. Prick with a pin to release air of any which rise to the top. Cool in water, hang to dry, refrigerate.

EU member states, and the Commission, cannot offer any succour to secessionist movements, as so many of them have similar ‘internal’ issues. One might have hoped for chilly neutrality, rather than the overt hostility shown to Catalonia. So much for hope.

There is no such dilemma regarding the internal politics of Poland so it’s safe to batter them about the head, diplomatically speaking.

I suppose the reason they don’t just all join forces is because they would lose the three way tag team pantomime that’s played out for the benefit of the media,
Three kicks at the SNP rather than one they would get if it was a normal political party , by rights the SNP should have equal representation opposing this Unionist Bloc as opposed to the built in three to one majority that doesn’t reflect votes cast for each of the parties.

Catalunya and Alba/Scotland are essentially matters of territorial integrity. The loss of both to the ‘greater state’ would signal in glorious neon considerable loss of face. Some years ago the thinktank Chatham House pointed that out with respect to the UK. The Spanish might be able to live that down but the UKGB&NI would struggle. Its historic high profile on the world stage, the imperial legacy, would be questioned. With Brexit the British state has not found many new friends and has possibly lost quite a few anglophile sympathisers. Were we by popular voice to dissolve the Union the chances are we should be held guilty of the basest ‘treachery’. The British ‘establishment’ might well choose to retaliate. We know from its yellow press how Scottish nationalism and things Scottish generally are perceived. Anything might be expected from a state free of the constraints of the EU and in buccaneering mode.

I am lucky to be in a well paid job, yet the flip side of that is that I’m surrounded by Times, mail and telegraph readers. The ignorance is staggering. In 2014 I did raise my head above the parapet and took people on with their wet and economically inept arguments. It quickly got me known and it became quite an uncomfortable period at work.

They got their way – and their result. Incredibly, with everything that’s gone on since, their arguments remain the same – they can’t explain why – just quietly optimistic about brexit and thoroughly disparaging about Scotland, the SNP and independence.

They turn their attentions now on ‘jimmy krankie’ and her tax policy. The derisory comments about folk that vote for SNP/Green are breathtaking (these are people I get on well with and respect professionally and I know they would bend over backwards to help me personally out of a tough spot).

Channel 4 teatime news also kicking the living shit out of indy Catalan right the noo. Our imperial masters are essentially mimicking BBC, as usual, and its the exact same C4 crew that shat all over Scots indy ref1, too.

UKOK Tory media propaganda hasn’t been this bad since 2014 but it may be that no UKOK media gimp can get anyone pro Catalan to talk to them, its all just NO and converts to NO, shock.

Yes, but one way of ending that kind of doubt might be bob?

Lots of international neutral observers, instead of none, exit polls, instead of none, maybe even remove the threat of getting kicked tae fcuk by Spainish riot cops in the street and so on,

    Do you see bob?

No police needed in a legal election, such as today.

Nice. So its all fine and dandy sending in the riot cops when it suits, to beat the shit out of anyone who you disagree with bob?

I meant the threat of being kicked to fae by storm trooper thug riot cops bob, the threat. Because police violence is always a great democratic thingee isnt it bob, if you dont vote how we say, you’ll get a batton smacked across your skull grandad and grandma, dont know what that is in Spanish or Catalan, bob.

States terrorising a section of its populace, might be all fine and dandy with you bob, but its democracy?

A lot of Catalan YESers did bob.

Worst thing about turds like you bob, you’re apologists for neo fascism. Actually that’s two worst things, youre an apologist and supporter of neo fascism. And all because you’re against Scotland becoming a nation state, again.

Very sleazy bob, might work though.

Atta boy bob. Hardly a draw, a spectacular victory for yoons like you, 2014, a triumph over North Britain that Spain neo fascists can only dream of, and all the violence in that ref came from, wait for it bob, neo fascists. Huzzah for great British neo fascism bob.

But its interesting watching neo fascist apologists of teaGB in action too bob.

Do you think the Spanish gov wil do a UK gov The Vow shyste bob?

Not saying the pushed UKOK over the tape, 2104 bob, but even neo fascists like you must be wondering why UK gov came out with their historic The Vow fraud, at the last minute, let alone how they’ve reneged on completely too bob.

Well not completely, PAYE got “given” to Scotland and look how exact same crew of teamGB yoons are going mental about their nattax hell now, bob.

You’re an odd lot you yoons, bob.
