Wings Over Scotland

Life coming at you

Posted on August 02, 2019 by

2 August 2018: Ruth Davidson is the second most popular Tory with party members surveyed by Conservative Home, and regularly spoken of by the press as a potential future Prime Minister.

2 August 2019: not so much.

Oh well, that’s showbiz.

Still, at least the UK media punditariat was on top of the situation as usual:

Sooner or later, everyone sees what we see.

A media construct and nothing more.

CmonIndy

She still has a long way to fall to reach her true value.

bobajock

Former BBC luvvie gets all the love, and then gets noticed and then falls flat on her selfish face for popularity <- cos shes a mini-Boris.

Terry

There’s not enough stupid people around to swallow the ‘anti-snp no other policies’ rhetoric forever and she clearly has no influence on the wider party.

She said sorry to me in asda once for no apparent reason, took all my might to stop myself saying ‘there’s plenty of real actual things you could apologise about instead hen’.

galamcennalath

It’s all another measure of the utter irrational and chaotic mess BritNats and Tories in particular are in.

Whatever we think of Davidson, the last few elections have shown that she was probably the strongest asset the UK had in Scotland. The media build up, and creating the Ruth Davidson single policy brand, returned modest gains for BritNattery.

And now all that has been cast aside as collateral damage with Johnson’s orgy of the far right policies and English Nationalism.

Perhaps even some Scottish Tories will now see they are Scots just like the rest of us, expendable!

Etrigan

They’ll get there in their own time. Just takes some people a little longer.

Bugger Le Panda

The political output of Scottish editions of the English Dailies have become more like the football pages with slapped down and and angry commentary.

Dumbed down to simple catchphrases and dog whistles so they can create build and knock down politicians at will for edition sales.
Their sales are falling faster as we see through their lies and smears.

Hell mend them

Alastair

Perhaps she should do something really radical like holding some constituency surgeries to understand what’s gone wrong.

Effijy

What can the Mooth expect?

The rich don’t like their lackeys taking time off to breed.

Oh and don’t like darling Bojo the Cliwn

Doug

She’s a British nationalist bbc invention – shallowness a prerequisite.

“The shallower the brook, the more it babbles.”

“You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time” seems an appropriate quote.

Torie are soooo fickle, aren’t they Ruth?

Out of the spotlight for twa minutes and pfftt naebody loves you.

Shame. Never mind…

If the pot called the kettle black, what can we call Martin?

Clapper57

Hey my name’s RUTH…..you’ll find that I’m renowned for not talking the TRUTH……my nickname is the MOOTH…..once pretended I was reaching out to the YOUTH….that fell apart it was like pulling out a TOOTH…….they just didn’t get my politics God S’TRUTH…….I think it was cause I was doing it with Mikey G…..he’s got a face that looks like he needs to permanently PEE…it was actually all just a ploy to get on the BBC……but I needed to look like I could fly like a butterfly and sting like a BEE…….it was all going so well until it was spoilt by BOJO….. that swine aided by fanboy stole my MOJO…..now I’m trying to hide behind another LOGO…..saying I’m not with them that’s a definite NO GO….nobody is taking my crown especially that JO JO……Orange Jacket man he was on my SIDE…..we, as a party, made his kind welcome and didn’t try and HIDE, Adam and Murdo made that clear with mucho quotes of NO SURRENDER…..if they wanted bigotry we were the VENDOR…..they could even be one of our Councillors when we put out to TENDER…..there was some scandal but we didn’t return them back to SENDER….they and their bigotry are still here in our party in all their SPLENDOUR.

Life does come at you so very FAST…..not so long ago I was having a BLAST……future PM they said with so many votes they would CAST…..now it looks as if they want to put me out to GRASS……No more second Independence Referendum was my CRY…….through every type of election but it was only time I was trying to BUY………I was lucky the media never tried to look me in the EYE….and ask me awkward questions cause I’d then have to LIE…………..HQ has abandoned me and so have my sodden MP’s……they’re all on BOJO’s side and on their bended KNEES…..it’s like I’m now contaminated with loser FLEAS……they no longer listen to me they just do as they PLEASE.

Never mind I’ve still got my pals in the PRESS…..they’ll help me get over this bloody MESS….in times of trouble they’ve always saved me from DISTRESS…………or maybe I’ll just keep my heid doon and if Boris asks me anything……….I’ll just say f**k it………..YES.

Ian Mackay

galamcennalath says:

Jeez. No wonder the Union is croaking its last.

starlaw

Never mind Ruthie . . all good things come to an end, except a black pudding . . if you start in the middle.

Merkin Scot

“Fiddling with Flies”. RC Ruth, caught in the zipper of Brexit.

Artyhetty

Looks like some Tories in Scotland are persona non grata when Johnson gets into the big hoose at WM! Oops. You see untRuth and Mundell, all that swithering, I can’t stand that Boris mind, then, I love that Boris mind, it’s done you no end of harm.

Johnson’s weeding out the weeds so he can prop up his Scottiah brand with only thsoe who would follow him off of a plank if told to. Jump? How high? Or that’s them, on the dole queue, victims of their own nasty policy, except they all still get a fancy pension don’t they, so still living in the way to which they have become accustomed with lots of dosh apid to them from the public purse.

These troughers shafting their own country should hang they heads in shame, but they are devoid of any conscience, so they won’t.

Hope they enjoy early retirement, so many people never get to retire before they shuuffle off this mortal coil, due to being overworked and hugely underpaid.

Davidson is a disgrace as is her party, but she has blotted her copybook now, boo hoo untRuth, how sad, not!

Artyhetty

I proof read it, amended spelling, but it still has mistakes grr.
Scottish, not ‘Scottiah’, but that could be a thing maybe!

Wee Alex

Independence would be guaranteed if Ruthie and Nigel (Esq), were elevated to House of Lords

CameronB Brodie

Life is hard enough, but when your personal ideology lacks coherence with the outside world, then you’re really up against it. Not if you’re a media construct though, who’s entire ‘success is dependent on their usefulness to the One Nation ideology. Unfortunately for (t)Ruthless, One Nation Torydum is just sooo passe. The New Right rules the roost now and are creating Brexitania to ensure there is no alternative to authoritarian (white) English/British nationalism.

Special Thematic Section on “Societal Change”

A Complex Systems Approach to the Study of Ideology: Cognitive-Affective Structures and the Dynamics of Belief Systems

Abstract

We propose a complex systems approach to the study of political belief systems, to overcome some of the fragmentation in the current scholarship on ideology. We review relevant work in psychology, sociology, and political science and identify major cleavages in the literature: the spatial vs. non-spatial divide (ideologies as reducible to a spatially organized set of dimensions vs. as complex conceptual structures) and the person-group problem (ideologies as driven by psychological needs of individuals vs. by institutional and power structures of society).

We argue that construing ideologies as conceptual networks of cognitive-affective representations embedded in social networks of people may provide a path for bridging these existing gaps and epistemological disputes. Tools from cognitive science and computational social science such as cognitive-affective mapping, connectionist simulations, and agent-based modeling are appropriate methods for a new research program that substantiates our complex systems perspective on ideology.

I have a strong suspicion that Colonel Yadaftie worked her way up the BritNat greasy pole via British Armies Media Operations Group as a ‘journalist’, her minimal time as an Army Reservist, her ‘extra-curricular’ work for Fluffy whilst still employed as a BBC Journalist and now as a constructed media puff piece front woman for the ‘Scottish’ Tories and the ‘Precious Union’.

“The Media Operations Group” rebranded the “Security Assistance Group” now the 77th Brigade which is described by the MOD as “an agent of change”

RM

BBC best propaganda machine in the world.

Robert Peffers

Ruth who?

Cubby

Not commented much recently but I think this just about sums up British politics:

British Nationalists lie and they lie all the time about nearly everything.

geeo

Davidson very recently, has ‘threatened’ to split the Tories in Scotland from the Uk party.

An official split, where the ‘Scottish’ tory accounting unit, self fund and become an ACTUAL Scottish Conservative Party.

Officially, it is because Davidson hates her new boss, but in reality, it is to enable the New Scottish Tory Party to operate in an independent Scotland when we end the Treaty of Union.

As currently constitued, NO UNIONIST PARTY will be allowed to take part in the politics of an independent Scotland as they are part of a political party operating in WM, which will soon be the parliament of a foreign country.

THAT is why they oppose even holding an indyref, good old self preservation.

By talking about a split, Davidson is admitting that Indy is inevitable and is testing the ground to see if she can get enough backing to create a new, seperate tory party entity which WILL allow her to keep operating in an indy Scotland.

Fuck all to do with her new idiot boss.

A chancer of the highest order.

Big Jock

She is no better than Boris. A career politicion. She only cares about Ruth. That’s what a shallow , empty vessel she is. It’s why She does no surgeries. She would have nothing to say.

SilverDarling

@Jockanese Wind Talker 7.48 pm

I’m not one for conspiracy theories as such but you may have something there.

She appeared out of nowhere, had little or no background in politics, appeared to be talking from a pre prepared script most of the time and now appears to have completed her mission and will disappear with her route out being her disagreement with the real Boss.

She was clearly unsuitable for the job long-term and there was no substance to her whatsoever.

A Unionist media construct indeed, funded by ‘Dark Money’.

Doug,

Old Gaelic proverb.

Ken500

Tory agin Tory. Even Davidson can’t stand Johnston.

Tory majority down to one. The Tories are going down into negative figures. They will lose a GE.

The Polls were wrong again.

Robert J. Sutherland

The English Tories have found a new saviour and anyway, Scotland (as always) is expendable for the Greater Good of the Party.

JayCee the other would-be saviour is also well on the road to ignominy.

Lenny Hartley

Ken500 , dont know what polls you read but the ones im looking at say that the Tories will win ,and if they wait until after Brexit day they will win handsomely. There is a new voting intention poll out tonight we shall see what it says.
If the Brexit Party did not split the Pro Brexit vote last night the Tories would have won with a candidate whom the electorate effectively sacked after being found guilty of fraud.
The Liberal party just got over the finish line because clwyd cymru and the Greens stood aside.
If you think that there will be a liberal/labour/snp coalition or a supply and confidence agreement then I think you are mistaken, certainly not when Corbyn is leader of the Labour Party.

Dr Jim

Jo Swinson’s Liberal Tories demand the SNP stand aside in Scotland for the good of the *country* over Brexit

You just knew at the first sign of them thinking they’d won something that daft wummin would demand queenery

And the worst of it is the news people are running with the idea of it as if the SNP should get out of the way for a party with 12 MPs across the whole of the UK while the SNP have 35 in Scotland alone predicted to rise to over 50 if there’s another GE while the Tory Dems are predicted to be less than 40 in the same scenario

For the good of the *country* though eh

Reluctant Nationalist

As much a media construct as Sturgeon, but without the golden carrot.

She was a shite actor, though. Chewing the scenery and all that.

galamcennalath

I don’t think Swinson is a very good pinup girl for the Union in Scotland. She has a lot of baggage from being part of Cameron’s coalition government – austerity and benefits squeezes. She has voted on some very objectionable policies at WM. Consensus seems to be that she is now an absentee MP living down south.

Davidson’s ‘success’ came from distancing herself from the dodgy doings of her party down south. Swinson has been up to her oxters in London Tory effluent.

Swinson is going to be a harder sell for the loyal ‘Scottish’ media machine.

Kenny J

And if there is a GE do you really think Corbin would do a deal with the SNP. More Pie in the Sky.
I reckon he would rather prefer to lose, which Labour would do anyway, than talk and deal with these sweaties.
Even if they did win, they would refuse to entertain the SNP.
Imagine the English press getting wind of it.

Dr Jim

Struggling to see how Nicola Sturgeon a politician for 32 years could in any way be thought of as a media construct unless of course you just don’t like her then shouldn’t you just say that

Capella

I think the army cyber brigade is recruiting atm.

@Capella

They need to up their game a tad, the quality of recruit is honking.

Tory Whip Obeying FibDem Jo Swineson (no typo) is now the best hope to save their ‘Precious Union”.

Since Indy Ref 2014 Scotland has had:

1. Saviour of the Union, Jim Murphy (British Nationalist Labour Party in Scotland) lost all seats bar one!

2. Colonel Yadaftie, Ruth ‘flip flop’ Davidson (Neo-Facist BritNat Tory from Scotland Party) serial Election loser!

3. Tory Whip Obeying, Jo Swineson (no typo) (Yellow Tory British Nationalist FibDem Party) who wants the SNP to stand aside in Scotland to let her Pro-Remain EU Party to win!

She’ll go the same way as El Colonel Yadaftie

🙂

Shug

Sadly i dont think Ruth has the balls to run her own conservative paety in scotland and it would only make sence if she switched and supported indyref2
That would be a leap
She could end up with power in an indy scotland but in the uk she is toast

Well.

Fintan O’Toole, on Brexit:

ben madigan

@Ian Brotherhood who reported Fintan O’Toole’s idea

I do not think any Irish person or politician has the right or duty to save England from a no-Deal Brexit if that is what it wants and is working towards.
Remember it is England with the weight of its population that is inflicting Brexit-related harm on NI, Scotland and the ROI.

International measures will be taken against England for breaking the Belfast/GF Agreement.

Given the No Deal related damage to the economy, job losses, farming, fishing etc, over the next couple of years Scotland will move towards Independence and NI to a successful Border Poll.

Richardinho

She’s outlived her usefulness. The Tories don’t need to pretend anymore that they embrace working class Jockos as much as anyone else.

Hamish100

Lib dems are willing to go into coalition with the Tories in Scotland.

Just ask Wullie Rennie

K1

Nicola Sturgeon ‘is’ in fact the FM in Scotland and heads the no. 1 party in Scotland, the SNP MP’s are in fact only accountable to the the FM in Scotland.

Hardly a ‘construct’ and certainly not a ‘media’ construct at that. NS isn’t a branch manager elevated by the media as the saviour of Scotland fighting back the hordes…of voters who didn’t vote for the fucking Tories even before the SNP replaced Labour.

You’re coming across as an idiot more and more. Keep it up, just gein’ yersel a richt showin’ up. 🙂

Clapper57

Yeh as someone mentioned above …I caught the tail end of some chump on Da Nine show….expecting SNP to step aside in some seats in Scotland while Lib Dems field candidates in every constituency…fir the country ya ken………eh which country is that champ ?

They are likey so so transparent…hope they run with this because only the thickest of the thick would think this was okay…and not mental mental chicken oriental….kinda illiberal too …..I mean taking away voter’s choice for their benefit…oh nothing to see here…seems fair and square…in La La Land maybe !

So basically the Lib Dems are really going to go down to the depths of this radical road as the teeny weeny itsy bitsy liar infested party whose leader thinks she’s queenie….. dictating to the largest party, the SNP, in Scotland…….the SNP whose chances of achieving many gains in next GE as most pro Remain EU party in Scotland is all but assured…..THEY the SNP have to stand aside for the proven liar infested party but the liar infested party ain’t gonna reciprocate…..are they on drugs ?……ones that give them delusions of grandeur.

Whoa there ya Tubes…..see this is the thanks the SNP get for trying to save the UKOK…next thing the People’s vote mob will climb on board the Liberal choo choo train….why do all roads always but always lead to SNPBAD….dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t.

@ Petra @ 9.42pm

Yeh Petra….I did miss out the dark MONEY….that’s kinda FUNNY…..but then again I might have had to call Ruth HONEY…or a political boiler BUNNY …know the term is bunny boiler but rhymes… you know…needs must….in fact the rap sheet on her and her party, branch and HQ, would put the word count on War and Peace to shame……and sure even the Rev has a limit on how many words we write on his blog Lol

It’s now 2pm so I can say Have a good day ( even though it’s the middle of the night) ….I will probably now have nightmares about Jo Swinson at her elocution lessons….those vowels….stop the sound of those vowels…..aaarrrgh

defo

Maybe some think tank could be created to give her a title (with cosy income) to fall into.
Not the title she was after, although a girl who keeps schtum could be a Lady yet.

@ Thepnr – I was only thinking of Ruth’s employment prospects “going forward”. Problem is, who could take over as leader of the Ruth Davidson No Referendum Party in this new Johnstonian era? Adam Tomkins?

@ Reluctant Nationalist.

The media can hardly be credited with any positive involvement in the profile of Nicola Sturgeon. It’s wall to wall SNP baad, daily. Have you ever come across any positive reporting of Nicola’s trips abroad, or even reporting it at all. Nicola’s international standing and even in England is down to Nicola, the UK media have had f#ck all input to that.

Gordon Forrest

real proof of the pudding will be if she gets invited back on have I got news for you

One of Davidson’s bunch?

TODAY. ” Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has told the Daily Express Whitehall will have a greater say in how hundreds of millions of pounds are spent in Scotland. ”

Scotland’s Tory MPs are answerable to:

ONE their constituents

TWO the UK Conservative Party

THREE the UK Conservative Party Whips at Numbers 9 and 12 Downing Street, Westminster and their office in the Commons.

NOT Ruth Davidson who in UK terms is an empty vessel—all bluff and bluster.

Clapper57

Re my previous comments on the BBC ‘The Nine show’ last night.

The Lib Dem that was on was John Ferry an adviser to Lib Dems.

Checked his twitter and someone tweeted this to him :

” I do hope you made it clear the LibDems would not consider working with Scottish nationalists under any circumstances. The pact with Plaid seems Machiavellian enough”.

John Ferry’s response was ” Yes I did”.

So no worries the Lib Dems will NOT be asking the SNP to step aside in any Scottish seats…thanks God they are a party that keeps their word….after all you can’t ask the SNP to step aside for your party…” if you make it clear you will NOT work with them…under ANY circumstances”.

That’s a keeper….another one.

Brian

Martin Kettle has a long and ignominious history of getting things wrong. I remember there was a short period (during the time I posted on the Grauniad years ago) where he got a few articles right, and each time my only comment was “Who are you, and what have you done with Martin Kettle?”

He’s also a dyed in the wool tory (hence the love for Bliar), so would naturally big up Ruthie.

David

Why is STU even reading Conservative Home never mind advertising it by posting its findings on this site

Brian Doonthetoon

Hi David.

From the WOS “About us” page.

About us

———————————————————————————————————————–

“It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.” – Terry Pratchett, author

———————————————————————————————————————–

Wings Over Scotland is a Scottish political website, which focuses particularly on the media – whether mainstream print and broadcast organisations or the online and social-network community – as well as offering its own commentary and analysis.

Which other media outlets do you feel that WOS should ignore? Did Terry Pratchett ever have the honour of meeting you and that inspired his above quote?

Gary

Her ‘rise to fame’ reminds me of Farage. Farage was leading a party (UKIP) with little support and little chance of getting any. Seen as a fringe party beset with power struggles and petty squabbles. They’d had little to raise their profile since Robert Kilroy Silk had been with them, albeit temporarily. But, with MUCH support from Question Time under Dimbleby’s direction, he was given a regular platform from which to present both his case, and the ‘fact’ that he was mainstream and most important of all – POPULAR when, in fact, he was NONE of those things.

Like Davidson, Farage (and UKIP) have been entirely a creation of the media. But for Davidson the novelty has worn off and her obvious support for ‘Remain’ has her out of step with the ‘swivel-eyed loons’ that are the Scottish Tories…

David

Brian point taken haha
