Wings Over Scotland

Get your feet back on the ground

Posted on February 28, 2014 by

A chance comment on Twitter this afternoon gave us a fun thought – with over 230,000 readers a month, could we get a song to No.1 in the charts by ourselves now, as both publicity and a rallying call for the Yes movement?

We got lots of suggestions for songs with apt lyrics about Scotland’s relationship with the UK and catchy tunes, so as democrats we’ve decided to have a poll to pick what would be the best choice if we should decide to attempt the project.

You can cast your vote below.

[poll id=”52″]

SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOVED
(The Proclaimers, 2003)

“You’ve been let down, messed around
Told to get your feet back on the ground
When you should have been loved, loved, loved
Should have been loved

You’ve been ripped off, written off
Told an act of kindness made you soft
When you should have been loved, loved, loved
You should have been loved

But all your detractors underestimated you
Cause they don’t know you like I do

You’ve slept rough, you’ve stolen stuff
Been beaten by a guy to show he’s tough
When you should have been loved, loved, loved
Should have been loved

And anything new you tried to do
Got you treated like a jumper in a queue
When you should have been loved, loved, loved
You should have been loved

But when there was pity and when there was wealth
You wasted neither on yourself

Should have been loved, should have been loved
Should have been loved, should have been loved

Should have been loved, should have been loved
Should have been loved, should have been loved

Oh, your detractors underestimated you
Cause they don’t know you like I do, like I do

You’ve been let down, messed around
Told to get your feet back on the ground
when you should have been loved, loved, loved
You should have been loved.

The “Make Alba Shine” YES song that featured at Celtic Connections (see Scot goes Pop link) has just finished being recorded in the studio by “Cask” this week.

    link to scotgoespop.blogspot.co.uk

More news to follow regarding release date, but there will be a chunk of the proceeds going to the YES cause.

It was performed at the YES Badenoch meeting in January (wee clip below).

Not on the same league as the Wings crowd-fundraising, but the money to record “Make Alba Shine” in the studio was “pub-sourced” in about 5 minutes, after songwriter Gilly performed it at his legendary New Year’s Day gig (with Brother Fergus) in the Cairn Hotel in Carrbridge.

I also think it would stand a decent chance of getting the whole movement going ‘yeah, we’ll get behind that and get it to number one’ …rather than just the WoS readers.

I’m sure there are loads of decent candidates worthy of the nod. This piques my curiosity and humour. I shall watch with interest.

It’s all crap so I want my country back.
Breeze blows sleaze from this musty-coloured fellow,
    So I tell them he’s a sack.
Yes, yes, yes, I want my country back.

It has no meaning, better together,
    Remembered, but not Forever
Flee to your hosted, shuttered rodent runs
Can’t compensate for lack of a colony,
Because the empires all gone away.

    La-la-la-la…
Oh, your poor old union jack
Yes, yes, yes, I want my country back.
    La-la-la-la…
Oh, in the autumn albas back
Yes, yes, yes, I want my country back.

I like my football on a Saturday,
Roast beef on Sundays, aye right.
I go to Blackpool for my holidays,
Sit in the open, shoot the shite.

This is my street, and I’m never gonna to leave it,
And I’m always gonna to stay here
If I live to be ninety-nine,
‘Cause all the people I meet
Seem to come from my street
    And I can’t get away,
Because it’s calling me, (come on home)
Hear it calling me, (come on home)

    La-la-la-la…

Yes, yes, yes, I want my country back.
    La-la-la-la…

There are those who think that life is nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

    A planet of playthings,
    We dance on the strings
    Of powers we cannot perceive.
    “The stars aren’t aligned
    Or the gods are malign”-
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
    I will choose a path that’s clear-
    I will choose Free Will.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them- they weren’t born in lotus-land.

    All preordained-
    A prisoner in chains-
    A victim of venomous fate.
    Kicked in the face,
You can’t pray for a place
    In heaven’s unearthly estate.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
    I will choose a path that’s clear-
    I will choose Free Will.

    Each of us-
    A cell of awareness-
    Imperfect and incomplete.
    Genetic blends
    With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that’s far too fleet.

    This is it
    Don’t play it safe
    Don’t put on ice
    Yeah, this is it
    Don’t chew it over
    No don’t kick it around
    This is it
    Don’t wait and see
Don’t try to work it out

Just say yes! Do it now!
    Let yourself go!
    Just leap! Don’t look!
    Or you’ll never know
    If you love it
    You might really love it!

    So don’t tell me
    It could all go wrong
    No don’t tell me
It could all be a mess
    Oh don’t tell me
It could all be a waste of time
Just say oui! Si! Sim! Da! Ja! Yow! Igen! Kylla!
    Just say yes!

I’m with Paul above, not a great idea in my opinion. Makes the Yes campaign look like a wee fringe group trying to be allowed to sing rebel songs, or a bunch of indie types moaning about Simon Cowell and X-Factor.

The only way I can think of it working is if the song in question provokes the BBC into banning it (for being overtly political, maybe?) and then you get a Streisand Effect. On those grounds, a rewrite of Cap in Hand might be an interesting release.

Flower of Scotland is a love it or hate it job.
Anything folky will be seen as too parochial by the younger generation.

It would be good to see the indy supporting bands and artists do an original song – maybe with a shouty YES chorus along the lines of Van Halens JUMP 🙂

Just back from leafleting arrivals at the Sheridan/Donohoe Celebrity Death Match.

TS arrived, after reccying us from the car park, surrounded by a human doughnut of his most trusted guards (they know who they are…plus ca change, comrades eh?) He accepted a leaflet from me, but the head was down the whole time, no eye-contact, and no sound at all, apart from a vile comment from one of his party (who shall remain nameless) dismissing us as the ‘Scottish Psychopath Party’ (huh?) – the same character emerged some ten minutes later to call one of us a ‘monkey’. Nice!

The place was packed. We ran out of leaflets publicising next Monday’s Ayr Town Hall SSP public meeting (where Colin Fox and Jim Sillars will be speaking) and Trade Unions For Independence. 99% of arrivals cordially accepted the flyers – a few angrily waved them away when they realised who were were.

I asked the organiser, well before the hall started filling, if I could put the flyers on empty seats. Request denied – ‘no political literature on the seating’. Aye, okay big man…

The proposed Livestream was cancelled – the ‘speakers’ hadn’t given consent. Clan Destiny Films were denied permission to film the event, although Sheridan did agree to grant them an interview afterwards. It seems you really had to be there, eh? (‘Public’ meetings – don’t you just love them?)

And that, as they say, was that.

    Hmm.

    Let’s get this straight.

I was told ‘the speakers’ (in relation to the Livestream bar)and as I didn’t encounter another source able to confirm either way (not that I asked everyone else – we were rather ‘busy’) that is what I reported. Maybe the organiser was being ‘diplomatic’, or maybe the person who communicated the information to me got it wrong, but that’s precisely what I was told the organiser said, on the ground, and I was told that at approx 6.45.

Morag, I’ll ignore the ‘as if you didn’t know’ – not even sure what you’re implying there? If I was particularly interested in what Sheridan or Donohoe have to say about anything then I’d still be in the Volunteer Rooms. And in any event, I was there to hand out leaflets for an upcoming SSP public meeting, not to collect notes for a WoS article/BTL SSP propaganda piece.

What I’ve written above is a true account of what happened tonight – if you think it’s tainted with some ‘agenda’ then you’re crediting me with more imagination and guile than I happen to have.

This is my first post on this site. Have been reading for a while and very impressed with the information available. As the Proclaimers support us in the YES camp, I think we should support them by choosing Cap in Hand as the single to promote, as it is very apt to our cause.

The Poll , however, does seem to only have one choice at the moment , and I would also support that choice , especially if the Proclaimers were willing to perhaps change some of the wording for us.

If timed properly we COULD make this a number one in the UK, what a slap in the face that would be, but I feel it would be most effective towards the last two months.

In 2013 Avicci reached number one with 267,00 copies sold in the first week, with Blurred Lines being the best selling single of 2013 at 1.47 million copies sold and occupying the number one slot for 5 non consecutive weeks, also making it the longest number one of 2013. If Andy Stewart could keep A Scottish Soldier in the charts for 36 weeks in 1961, surely with these ease of online purchasing we can get a ‘hit’ in 2014.

Perhaps a dry run with Should Have Been Loved just now, but we should bide our time and go for a big one in the summer. It needs to be something obvious, with broad appeal across all age groups. During the summer there needs to be an unstoppable momentum, a zeitgeist. The only one that I can think of that’s accessible, upbeat, not corny and has artistic merit is Caledonia. Probably the Frankie Miller version (sorry Dougie).

This song is so rich in imagery and symbolism that it is impossible to give an adequate understanding of it without writing a major treatise. Basically, the main theme is anti-imperialism coupled with the recognition of the part that Scots have played in the conquest and subjugation of other peoples within the British Empire and the anticipation of the day when all peoples are truly free and can meet in peace and friendship.

    Can only agree, Jeannie.

This one takes it outside our own borders and makes it international and multi-racial. It is one of the most powerful statements of determination and inevitability I have ever heard.

For me, it’s now about the inevitability of Independence, and of the indomitable human spirit.

We will get there, it’s just a question of when. Please let it be during my lifetime.

Another suggestion could be Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down” OK its not particularly Scottish, nor is the writer but it sends a pretty clear message:

Well I won’t back down, no I won’t back down
You could stand me up at the gates of hell
    But I won’t back down

Gonna stand my ground, won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won’t back down

    Chorus
Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
    And I won’t back down

Well I know what’s right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around
But I’ll stand my ground and I won’t back down

Hey baby there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground

Lyrics to Scotland Will Flourish :
Scotland will flourish by the sweat of labour
The strength of our will and the force of our mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
    Hatred corrupts and friendship refines

Let the Scots be a nation proud of their heritage
With an eye to the future and a heart to forgive
And let us be rid of those bigots and fools
Who will not let Scotland live and let live

Let us govern over country wisely and fairly
Let each man and woman work with a will
And Scotland will flourish secure in the knowledge
That we reap our own harvest and ring our own till

And let us be known for our kind hospitality
A hand that is open proper to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive and win out in the end

Scotland will flourish by the sweat of labour
The strength of our will and the force of our mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
    Hatred corrupts and friendship refines

So let us be known for our kind hospitality

    OK, looking at this logically…
It would have to be something that is already available on iTunes etc. It would also need to be something that many people would buy without realising why it is suddenly selling well. There are lots of good suggestions on this thread.

I like Letter From America, cos Johann Lamont set us off in that direction this week. It’s been on the news so that could be what put it into people’s minds. And, of course, the guys are pro-independence and have been in the news complaining about JL hijacking it.

As for best time to buy it… Saturday night after midnight. It’s when new releases are released and a sudden rush to buy would be normal. Get it high enough before 4pm Sunday and it would appear in the top ten at the start of the Chart Show on radio. If it is in the top ten it would be brought to more people’s attention and therefor could go higher before the chart is “locked down” around 6pm. Without radio play it would be difficult but do-able.

Of course already we all have a wide spread of IP addresses and locations, if iTunes was checking.

I’m heading off now to research possibilities on iTunes. I’ll report back later 🙂

As I said on Twitter, if we were actually going to do this, from a “bang for your buck” point of view, we’d be far better writing and recording our own song, with a nice blatant title like “Scotland Is Being Lied To By The Media”, “Anyone Who Says Scotland Would Be Forced To Join The Euro Is A Fucking Idiot” or “Euan McColm Is An Arsehole”.

After all, one of the strongest statements in pop history was “God Save The Queen” by the Sex Pistols, particularly as it demonstrated the sycophantic nature of the BBC et al by pretending it didn’t get to number one. Nobody listens to the charts any more, so nice lyrics with a coded message does nothing. What you want is to hammer the point home, and you do that by having a particular title.

Or just choose Declare Independence by Bjork.

Alternatively, I was put in mind of Fish’s cover of Thunderclap Newman’s ‘Something in the Air’ – credentials for this song as a candidate? Well, apart from the lyrics, and happy beat, a nice chorus about the revolution’s here… at the time Fish was a fairly large SNP supporter (I even remember him saying ‘Free by ’93, I truly hope so’ on stage once), and EMI blocked him from putting this single out before the 1992 general election on the grounds that it was “too political”. It got a delayed release and no promotion, disappearing fast…so it kind of is a song that got martyred for the cause of Scottish independence!! 😉

    Royals – Lords

There is power in a union – Billy Bragg (OK, perhaps not)

And agree with previous poster – ‘This is the sea’ would be perfect.

Regarding suggestions for a Runrig song, does anyone know what the band’s opinion is regarding independence? Former member Donnie Munroe used to be a Labour supporter and stood for election to the UK and Scottish parliaments in the 90s as a Labour candidate. Many Labour supporters oppose independence but I’m not sure whether or not he does. Former member Pete Wishart is of course an SNP MSP but I’m not sure what the political views are of the other current and former members.

C’mon Rev put us out our misery, if you don’t tell us today Im going ahead to buy it anyway.

    Iron Sky by Paolo Nutini

    We are proud individuals
    Living for the city
    But the flames
    Couldn’t go much higher

    We find God and religions
    To bait us with salvation
    But no one, no nobody
    Can give you the power

    To rise
    Over love
    Over hate
Through this iron sky that’s fast becoming our mind
    Over fear and into freedom

    Oh, that’s life
    That’s dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
    In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

    From which we’ll rise
    Over love
    Over hate
Through this iron sky that’s fast becoming our mind
    Over fear and into freedom

You’ve just got to hold on
You’ve just got to hold on

[Charlie Chaplin’s speech from The Great Dictator]
“To those who can hear me, I say – do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed – the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. ….. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! …..
You are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

….. let us use that power – let us all unite.”

    And we’ll rise
    Over love
    Over hate
Through this iron sky that’s fast becoming our mind
    Over fear and into freedom
    Into freedom

    From which we’ll rise
    Over love
    Over hate
Through this iron sky that’s fast becoming our mind
    Over fear and into freedom
    Freedom, freedom

    Oh, rain on me
    Rain on me
    Rain on me

Standing at the door of the pink Flamingo crying in the rain,
It was a kind of so-so love and I’m gonna make sure it doesn’t happen again,
You and I had to be the standing joke of the year,
You were a run around, a lost and found, and not for me I feel

Take your hands off me, hey,
I don’t belong to you, you see,
And take a look in my face, for the last time,
I never knew you, you never knew me,
    Say hello goodbye,
    Say hello and wave goodbye,

We tried to make it work, you in a cocktail skirt and me in a suit but it just wasn’t me,
You’re used to wearing less, and now your life’s a mess, so insecure you see,
I put up with all the scenes, this is one scene that’s going to be played my way

Stu, I’m quite sure there’s any number of musicians and associates quite prepared to put in a bit of their time should you want to record something special. I know there’s quite a few readers on here in a position to make this happen.

For people who have suggested a couple of Yes (the band)songs it just so happens that i wrote quite a few of their earlier songs in conjuction with their singer. There is one in particular which wasn’t recorded by Yes but Jon tried to do it with someone else but couldn’t get the words to work. Some one else ended up recording it adding to the lyric to make it work for them. I am in the process of re-writing a couple of lines and am recording it now as we speak. I’ll up it to youtube when it’s done. 🙂
