Did you spot it, folks?
You should have said “the land border with England“, shouldn’t you, Michael? You’re the Scottish Secretary. The constituency you represent is entirely in Scotland. And Scotland doesn’t have a border with Scotland.
And nor does the UK, before you try to pull that one. There is no part of Scotland that isn’t inside the United Kingdom. (The clue’s in the name.) Not yet, anyway.

What a disgrace for a politican meant to be representing a Scottish consticuency to say this. He just proves what we already know, that the British interest will trump the Scottish interest, first last and always. Time to make another saving and get rid of this parasite that leeches of us the taxpayer only to go against our interests. It’s always tempting just to dismiss senior lib dem politicians as a comical blundering irrelevance. But then you remember these absurd clowns are cupping the balls of the tories and cheering them on as ATOS and the Bedroom Tax hammers the disabled, the poor and the vulnerable.
We know why senior lib dem MPs became ministers and sold their party down the river. A nice cushy ministerial job a spiffing ministerial car and all the lovely perks they can grab. Why any decent lib dem would continue to support Clegg and these rogues, or even worse, spin for these yellow tories, is frankly baffling.
They must know the horrendous things being done to the the poo, the disabled and the vulnerable while principled lib dem opposition to abominations like Trident is a thing of the past. I only hope more and more decent lib dem members will shun what their party has become under Clegg.

this sort of mince, keeps bringing me back to this theme I picked up on as soon as Better together got off the starting block. This odd sense that these…lets call them unionists…don’t really think Scotland is part of the UK. If you pay close attention to most of what they say, even when trying to be positive, you are always left with the impression, that Scotland doesn’t play any part in it.
We should stay in the Union because it was Britain that bailed out Scotland’s banks.
We are excellent at business and science, but we need “Britain” to be noticed.
We wouldn’t be able to enjoy British Culture, suddenly, when independent
We wouldn’t be very good at sport unless we had the use of British sporting facilities
We would be a colony of Britain if we had currency union

Scotland’s border with Britain is not strong enough for divergent immigration policies? I wonder how Europe copes with its divergent policies given how close they all are. Its the casual disingenuous nature of this unionist campaign that strikes you at first. But then you notice that they never seem to speak of Scotland being part of it but always on the fringes of it, or at the gate of Britain waiting for handouts.
Seems peculiar to me that the status quo seems to be to keep Scotland in the Union, so it can benefit from this place called Britain, which its not really part of.

I’d be tempted to find it more amusing except I’m fairly sure that most people like me will know some of those who have been victimised by ATOS and the Bedroom Tax. For a government (and for lib dems in particular) to blatantly go after the poor and the disabled in this vile way is sickening. The casual bureaucratic cruelty dealt out by this westminster government should haunt those who are part of it to the end of their days.
The most ridiculous excuse I’ve heard from the lib dem spinners in the pocket of Clegg, Rennie and the rest is that if it wasn’t for the lib dems things would be worse. So in essence the lib dems are standing beside a bunch of Eton toffs calmly watching them kicking the living sh*t out of the poor and the disabled. When they are asked why they are doing nothing they then say that it’s not their fault because it could be even worse if the lib dems decided to give them a knife.
Like I say, why any decent lib dem is still in that party I have no idea.
They’ll have to live with what is being done in their name.
I could say something but I’ll hold my tongue, the only thing that I take from this is he will be the last SoS against Scotland.

I agree…..I just keep thinking that if they hadn’t gone into coalition with the Tories, the Tories would have had a lot more difficulty pushing through their odious policies. There might even have been a vote of no confidence by now. So, far from mitigating the effects of Tory policies, the Lib Dems have simply kept them in power, as far as I can see. On the other hand, they COULD have supported the SNP at Holyrood – a party which has policies far more in keeping with supposed Lib Dem principles. But they’ve done everything they can to oppose these policies in Holyrood, whilst supporting policies they avowedly do NOT agree with at Westminster.
Perhaps the majority of the UK’s electorate are just too scared to admit to themselves, that their vote is meaningless apart from the sanction it provides for what is essentially a one party system in Westminster?
On R4 now programme about how the N Sea oil is running out and there will be no more soon. I wonder how it will progress.
The veil slips there, showing that Moore’s interests lie clearly at Westminster, rather than in his constituency.

Re. the slip of the tongue? You don’t have to be an ambitious politician to be seduced by London. I have know plenty of Scots who have gone there, for a variety of reasons, and who have gone on to completely loose their Scottish identity. It seems to make life easier for them.
…or perhaps Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk are to become rUK sovereign territory?

Just heard the Radio 4 programme on oil. Very interesting and would recommend listening to it. Essentially was saying what we all already know – Aberdeen is booming, the North Sea is booming, the volatility in oil prices is factored in to the planning of the oil companies over the long-term, independence is not seen to be a problem, the oil should last up to another 40 years, but who knows, given developments in technology, there’s no saying how much more they can get out of it. Very encouraging and impressed by the amountof Scottish accents from people working at high levels in the industry.
Just thinking about an earlier posting about the scandal of politicians smiling at the opening of ‘food banks’.
Does anyone else remember the ’60’s when we used to have the Thanksgiving Service’ in our churches? (I believe we still do have them). It was at harvest time and people brought all sorts of foodstuffs to the church; There were loads and loads of tinned food etc. because there were an awful lot of people attended church in those days. These foodstuffs were then distributed to the less fortunate members of our society.
It was an act of genuine affection for our fellow human beings and it gave your heart a big lift. It was something special to experience and it gave you hope and faith in our people.
And there wasn’t a damned politician anywhere near the event. Ever!

In all seriousness, what is going to happen to these people post-Yes? The prospect of them trying to get into the Scottish Parliament is too awful to contemplate, and it’s hard to imagine that the decent folk in rUK will have much patience with all these grumpy Scots loitering around Westminster. The Reids, Ingrams, Alexander ‘Brothers’, Browns, Moores etc etc.
What’s more unpopular than a fart in a spacesuit? Someone else’s fart.
They must never be allowed to get their feet under any SP tables – no sackcloth & ashes, no mea culpas, no ‘blinding lights’ should make us forget what they’ve done and are doing. I can understand how you feel. However, if there is a Yes vote then it is up to both the electorate as a whole to decide whether to elect them or not, and also up those who choose to fight independence to justify and explain themselves. Of course if it is a No vote then we are collectively fucked, and the ermine chasers will continue in the same vein as they have done for ages.

None of us knows what the make-up of the Scottish Parliament will be five years hence, but if it still contains characters like Baillie and Lamont, and there are ‘newcomers’ like Douglas Alexander and Michael Moore? Heaven help us.
Politicians are, for better or worse, ‘professional’ – the real ‘pros’ among them will realise they’re holding a duff hand and switch allegiances, form new alliances etc asap.

I know some folks might think I’ve lost the plot here. Well to be honest I’m not too sure I really ever hold of the plot in the first place but hey that’s another story.
Anyway, in some respects I’m glad that Moore is the SoS fort Scotland Westminster. If the Liedems had not gone into coalition with the Tories then we’d have been left with my M.P. as SoS. I know that it is almost impossible to believe but this guy is actually WORSE than Moore. Jeez, I can’t believe that I’m actually saying Moore is NOT the worst politician to hold the post of SoS but it’s true.
I’m no psychologist, or analyst of human behaviour, but you can just tell that Michael Moore does not believe a word he is saying. Michaels only thought to himself when he is answering these questions is. For fucks sake big yin keep it together, don’t laugh whatever the fuck you do. We have a great gig here, 70 grand a year, plus expenses. Don’t do anything daft, were really chokin tae wet ourself and collapse in a heap at the shite were spouting, but if we do that it’s game over. No more nice lunches . Back to applying for jobs at aldi or pound land. Just an other year of this pish and we can fuck of tae Hawaii for 6 months.

That’s precisely what I kept thinking during his ‘debate’ with Nicola Sturgeon, and her parallel thoughts must’ve been along the lines of:
‘You know fine well I’ve got you by the baws big guy, and I know you know I know you know it. But fair do’s – we can play this game as long as you like ’cause we’re in a telly-studio. But outside here? You’re spoutin’ mince pal, and abody kens it fine.’
He’s nothing but a big ‘Bengal Lancer’.
His statement reveals much; a significant deficiency in intellectual capacity is his primary problem. Everything he says is therefore a consequence of his impediment.
But that doesn’t explain his British Establishment attitude; that Scotland is confusingly a fundamentally important pillar of what constitutes the British state yet is simultaneously a subservient region that borders it.
Extended immersion in The Establishment has clearly coloured this Ulsterman’s opinion of Scotland and he is clearly worried that he may never be able to hang an ermine robe on his back should Scotland choose impendence. For as sure as the sun will shine tomorrow, he will be as welcome to stay in London as he will be welcome to take a pew in Holyrood.

the behavior of Moore Murphy, et al, is beyond the pale, maybe you would like to head up a truth and reconciliation group, to reeducate these people, not into thinking like Scottish Nationalists to be honest human beings who have the best interests of their communities front and center and not a little considered side effect of their own self gratification, if these people were just career shoplifters/muggers/burglars you would wish to see a court taking seriously their anti social behavior and make efforts to rehabilitate them and remove the need for the crimes, but you seem to think that ministers of the crown who can have a much more damaging effect to the WHOLE of the country not just one old dear traumatized after being burgled, but no these people have to be beyond reproach? really?
Maybe the Constitution should have a clause barring any UK serving (or former) UK government minister from eligibility to run for the Scottish Parliament for (say) ten years. I don’t like the thought of folks who might still be working for another government behind closed doors being in our legislature in it’s formative years.

I don’t have a problem with your prohibition period for former MPs wishing to enter Scottish politics. I can’t remember how long for, but aren’t MP temporarily restricted in terms of the type of employment they can take, after they leave Parliament. I have the same concern as yourself. Given the lessons history should have taught us (e.g. McCrone Report), I wouldn’t put anything past the British state.

I share your view of the undesirability of Unionist politicians, who are willing to insult and belittle Scotland to try to sustain their beloved and profitable (to them) Union, bringing their nastiness into the Parliament of an independent Scotland. However, keeping them out generally has to be left to the voters since that is the nature of democracy. One possible exception to this would be for the Scottish legislation implementing independence to include a clause saying that no person currently entitled to sit in the House of Lords may stand for election in Scotland, to avoid possible conflicts of interest.
Does the 100% invisible and porous land border in Ireland not hole Moore’s argument below the waterline?
I just don’t get Lib Dems at all.
They want home rule. They could get it next year by voting Yes, but instead, they are voting No.
They want rid of the House of Lords. They could get rid of the House of Lords next year by voting Yes, but instead, they are voting No.
They want fairness and equality. They could get it next year by voting Yes, but instead, they are working together with the Tories who are promoting unfairness and inequality……and voting No.
They want an effective Scottish Government which implements some of their Lib Dem policies. They could get it if they lent some support to the SNP, but instead, they attack the SNP at every opportunity, for trying to implement the very policies the Lib Dems are in favour of.
What exactly are the Lib Dems then….some sort of “contrary” party?

I would guess that Nick Clegg has shafted the LibDems in his quest of personal political advancement. He left Uni and after a suitable series of non jobs turned to the LibDems, rather like Tony Blair did to Labour, not out commitment but self advancement.
He took them into “coalition” with the Tories in order to increase his personal “World” profile and his legacy in 2015 will to leave the LibDems virtually eliminated and cast aside. Their votes in Scotland will go to the SNP, mainly and some to the Tories and Labour. In rUK I haven’t a clue what will happen beyond saying that they are stuffed.
Clegg will a special elevation to the Lords and a top job in Bruxelles where he has always wanted to be.

They really are a puzzle, the Lib Dems. In an independent Scotland, they could achieve all of their policies fairly easily – we even have a system of Proportional Representation for electing the government, which they also want. So in an independent Scotland they would have PR, no House of Lords, Home Rule, nuclear disarmament, renewable energy and lots of lib dem policies, but, for some weird reason, all of these cherished aims are simply discarded in favour or a Union which refuses to deliver ANY of these things! It’s just bizarre! No wonder they’re so far behind in the polls. Their position simply has no credibility up here.
Remember wee Jim Wallace and his smiley wee proud face as he received his Ministerial Mondeo after forming his first sell out to Donald Dewar.

This statement about having a border with England being a “Nightmare” is an embarrassment to himself, his office, Scotland and the UK.
These stories that come out from Better Together must be causing laughter and scorn amongst the rest of the world. Meanwhile, most people in Scotland (so the polls would suggest) seem to be buying it and giving it “oh how awful! that sounds so complicated. maybe we shouldn’t bother, it’s probably beyond our wits”. We’ll be a laughing stock if we fall for this tripe. Imagine explaining to visitors that we voted “no” because because the Secretary of State for Scotland said that it would be a “Nightmare”, in fact “a Complete Nightmare”.

Actually, while admittedly contrary to appearances, Clegg, in his pre-British political career was not quite the inept figure he portrays today . He wrote academic papers in support of neo-liberalism/monetarism and rose to some prominence within EC circles.
His main claim to infamy (except it isn’t, it is well buried by the MSM) is that he headed the European negotiating team which dealt with whether or not and under which conditions, the BRIC countries would be allowed to join the WTO.
The timing of that and the generous tariffs agreed, was one of the big two destabilising influences on westernised democratic economies (the other whammy being neo-liberal monetarist madness) which brought on the credit crunch crisis. His Spanish wife is an international lawyer specializing in trade law and met Clegg while both were working in Brussels.
Surely Nick Clegg must wake up every morning and wonder why he is still in the same nightmare? His naked grasp for power has backfired spectacularly on himself and his party , consigning them to the political wilderness for many years to come. The ONLY noble course of action he has open to him is to walk away from the coalition and tear down this sham excuse for a government which has no mandate for existing, yet still manages to reign hardship and misery on millions. Is it possible that he would do this? It would take principle, that’s for sure … and guts. Over to you, Nick ………..
