The SNP really really don’t want to have another independence referendum, but if somebody somehow FORCES them into one, they DEFINITELY don’t want to have it in circumstances where they’d be starting the campaign with a 16-point lead.
(We must conclude from all this, incidentally, that John Swinney LOVES the Tories, because he had no problem accepting an indyref from a right-wing party in 2012.)
If Scotland leaves the UK, who might be the Prime Minister of the remains of it is none of his business, and certainly shouldn’t be a dealbreaker in achieving independence.
If there’s anyone left in the SNP with a shred of integrity (and if there is they must be very deep undercover indeed), Swinney ought to be challenged for the leadership at next month’s conference and replaced with someone – the Lord alone knows who – who’s actually willing to pursue the party’s supposed primary goal, because Swinney has now dismissed every possible route to it out of hand.
(Even though he loves Reform winning seats the rest of the time.)
We know Andy Burnham won’t give him a referendum and we now know he won’t accept one from Nigel Farage, so it would appear that the whole idea is off the table until at least 2034 (by which point the SNP will have about 17 members left on their current trajectory).
That’s a lot of time for a lot of grifters to slurp up a lot of gravy, but the rest of us are in for a depressing decade.
Swinney is a true fascist, refuses in democracy and working with other democratically voted parties. A total arse wipe of a politician _ used loosely.

Is that bad? My interpretation of the consensus from the BTL comments on the last thread is that Swinney’s playing a blinder by doing so.
The consensus is that it’s a trap, and even if it’s not, far more importantly, it fails the ideological purity tests.
It’s surprising to see Wings BTL content to settle in for the status quo until 2034, just as it’s astonishing to see Wings BTL in lockstep with the tractors of the SNP, but there we have it.

No matter how much Honest John and the other Fabians stamp their feet, if Reform form the next UK government (quite likely, according to polls) then they’ll HAVE to work with them, whether they like it or not.
But we all know Honest John’s completely against independence and is just in it for the gravy. Oink oink.
I never thought I might be recommending Mr Churchill to Mr Swinney, for I have no time for Mr Churchill, or indeed the Devil, but the former said there were circumstances in which he might at least give the latter a favourable mention in the House of Commons. I commend this pragmatism To Whomever It May Concern!

Reforms membership is now at 12,000 and rising. Who says Reform want to do a deal? The time the election comes around Farage may have a majority in Westminster and the SNP are left begging at the door. Let’s not pretend Scotland has any cards to play in the future negotiations of a majority Westminster government. Let’s not forget that it was the Scottish electorate that emptied the Nats from Westminster.
The dynamic of politics has changed. The SNP ideology is in par with the rest of the woke juggernaut. What have the SNP got to offer Reform? Threatening to tear up the union failed ten years ago leaving Scotland bitter and divided. Sturgeon left Scotland with it’s knickers round it’s ankles.
