Wings Over Scotland

Why we won’t give up

Posted on September 19, 2015 by

One year ago today.

The Daily Mail’s headline about the Unionist violence in George Square that night was “Police out in force at the polls as Salmond’s bullies are accused of intimidating voters”. The BBC went with “Salmond to quit after Scots vote No” with reports of the rioting quietly buried halfway down the page, later pulled out into the story “Police separate rival groups in Glasgow”.

Compare and contrast all the gatherings of Yes, throughout the last few years: no police lines, no screaming contorted hateful images such as those above.

These are violent people, they are not representatives of our country.

I felt the fear watching this unfold on 19th September last year, and was texting out messages of safety to others who I knew were out and about, to hide their yes badges, that evening, because I knew these people were simply thugs looking for a reason to hurt anyone.

They’ve nothing to do with ‘politics’, they are organised gangs with prejudice and hate aimed at anything they perceive as threatening their narrow minded hateful outlook on the world.

What is shocking, was the mass media cover up of this. That is an utter disgrace. They have condoned these violent gangs by not exposing them for who and what they are.

I will never forgive the BBC and STV for this, as for the rags, they are snake oil salespeople, punting their wares for profit, they’d sell their weans for their name on a byline:

Propagandists who protect violent extremists one and all.

There is no place for them in a civilised society.

It is a shame their opinions and culture were not laid bare before the electorate prior to the vote.

The irony they don’t see, albeit it is tattooed on them, worn by them, flown by them and shouted hysterically by them at others, is their tawdry, vile and triumphant nationalism.

I wonder how many Scots Asians, Black Scots, newly arrived Europeans or indeed people from England living in Scotland would have voted for no having seen this lot?

Truly shocking and sinister, brit nationalists are Scotland’s enemy within.

This has probably been mentioned before, but I attended a YES Glasgow anniversary bash last night (attended by the First Minister). I got talking to a couple of people at my table (SNP Glasgow south branch members) and we got talking about WoS. I was, naturally, singing the site’s praises but was met by some deep scepticism from a couple of people. They told me that they had only ever vsited the site once and as soon as they saw the German Nazi Party logo, they never came back again. I explained, of course, that it wasn’t the German Nazi Party logo but they responded by claiming that it looks helluva like it.

I couldn’t actually disagree with them after viewing the Nazi symbolism:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_symbolism

The WoS logo is actually putting some people off visitng the site because it gives them an immediate (although wholly false) impression. Perhaps some food for thought, Rev?

Depressing scenes, but even if independence is won, these folk will still be part of society.

This is why we have to win IndyRef 2 convincingly. Had we scrapped 51% last year, there would have been mayhem. The bigger the margin we win by, the less those BritNat monkeys (and their organ grinders in the shadows) will feel confident to hit the streets and do their bad stuff.

Last year was a massive disappointment, but I’m beginning to think maybe it had to be this way. One step at a time.

It makes me sick to think that Scotland produced these animals. They are worse than any Alabama lynch mob. The worst part is the media are on their side.

I remember Martin Luther walking across the bridge to face the southern Klu Klux Klan. The police and authorities allowed the racist bullies to beat them up. Martin refused to fight back. He said they would win by never reporting to violence. He said they use violence because they can’t control or understand their emotions.

We are better than these people. We use our heads and they batter heads. Something must be done about the BBC though. They are obsessed with alleged cybernats. Because they know the physical evidence points directly to Unionism. British intimidation is ending. We have already started to dismantle the State.

The dopes that turned out that night were encouraged to do so. Look not to the monkeys but the organ grinder. Someone put them up to it. The establishment was afraid that the YES support would occupy George Square after the referendum. In panic they opted for intimidation to scare us back into our box. Judging by the way the independence movement bounced back, it appears to have backfired spectacularly.

I lived with, and beside guys like this all my teenage life. They, like the young kid in one of the pictures ,are brought up this way by their parents, who ingrain prejudice and intolerance into their children.

This is reinforced by local groups, gangs and friends.
The bond is extremely strong and is indeed a survival mechanism in some areas of Glasgow and other inner cities

The links between Scotland and Northern Ireland are very strong through family and the drugs trade, which amasses a lot of money from this country. No amount of education can break this cycle, because it is all these people have to give meaning to their lives and existence. Without it they would be nothing,

However unpleasant, they are a fact of life in Scotland that we could well do without.
During my working life as well as my formative years I have met many of them and it confirmed for me their need to belong to something which shared their values, however twisted and contorted they may be.

I suppose ultimately every country has their share of social misfits with a warped and perverse outlook on life. We just have to deal with them best we can.

As a Rangers fan perhaps I can shed some light on the mindset of these thugs. They do really believe they are ” the people”. Elevated above their station in return for their unquestioning allegiance to the crown. Many of these Ulster/Scots Unionist were historically shipped to Ireland from the Estates of the aristocracy here and promoted to better positions. In return when the locals revolted they would answer the call to arms. That is what happened in Glasgow that night, win or lose, in their minds, they were answering the call to arms. Protect the crown.

What it was with the people in the square is that some left early I saw them going, some arrived late I talked to a couple, some were in bars and cafes and queueing in Greggs, and around on the streets as well. A lot in CH. My estimate would be 3,000, not 1,500, though the latter figure is probably what was there at any one time in the main part of the square, not adding those on the streets.

The police were relaxed and seemed happy. Oh, apparently there was a NO rally for about an hour earlier on, and the 2 people there behaved themselves well. I do mean 2, that’s not being flippant. Hope somebody got pictures of their rally!

They told me that they had only ever vsited the site once and as soon as they saw the German Nazi Party logo, they never came back again. I explained, of course, that it wasn’t the German Nazi Party logo but they responded by claiming that it looks helluva like it.”

You would think that being SNP members, they would disassociate themselves from comments that compare an innocent organisation to that of the Nazis.

In the not so distant past, when the SNP adopted the angular design of the thistle logo, it resembled a flipped version of the Odal or Othala rune. The Nazis had used a version of this rune, and it is still a favoured design amongst neo-Nazis, so it came as no surprise when the UK media and the unionists immediately made comparisons between the SNP and the Nazis. Such is the blind hatred of the UK media and the unionist, that these connotations exist to this day, despite the fact that all of the far-right organisations in the UK support the union.

Of course, as mentioned by others, the eagle has been a symbol for various organisations, regions and countries for centuries. France, Austria, Poland, Mexico, Egypt, and the good ole US of A all use the eagle in one form or another, as do various regions throughout Europe.

After a resounding win for the Golden Eagle in a SNH poll, in December 2013 the RSPB approached the Scottish Parliament with a petition to have the species formally recognised as Scotland’s national bird. This led to the Conservative MSP Jackson Carlaw attacking the proposal, stating that “ The golden eagle is the symbol of an empire that once invaded large parts of Scotland, and more recently of another empire that tried to. In the lifetime of many people in this country it was the last thing their relatives saw as they were marched to their deaths.”

Of course, what always manages to escape the uninformed, including that prize buffoon Carlaw, is that the Golden Eagle, in its winged form, is the globally recognised symbol of the Royal Air Force, and sitting atop the circlet of the RAF crest, is an imperial crown!
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force

But as another Winger commented, the Wings logo depicts a lion and not an eagle, so unless you somehow manage to confuse your Polar Bears with your Penguins, then the argument is a non-starter.

A lot of people think the EU in/out will be the trigger, but I too think it will be the Scotland Act.

    I agree.

Firstly, the EU ref has its problems. There are a lot of Indy supporters who see Scotland as best being out of the EU, like Norway. They may vote to take the UK out, then if the result is England out/Scotland in and indyref2 is triggered, these same people are going to be asked to vote Yes for independence, but independence inside the EU.

Pro EU and pro Indy don’t have exactly the same collections of followers.

If the Scotland Act turns out to be the poisoned chalice many of us fear it will be, then the Scottish Parliament may reject it. Swinney has already hinted at this.

The SNP have always previously accepted new limited powers on the basis that any power devolved is another step in the right direction. However, this package may have sinister hidden objectives!

They won IndyRef1 with promises, and those promises will be seen and accepted to be in tatters.

If that Devo2015 is genuinely WM’s best and final offer, and it is deemed potentially harmful and is rejected, we have a constitutional crisis!

It then becomes Status Quo versus Independence – as IndyRef 1 should have been! No promises will save thief Union next time.

    By Joe McGuire

A SEA of Saltires took over Glasgow’s George Square as an estimated 7000 people turned out for the Hope Over Fear rally, led by Solidarity Scotland co-convenor Tommy Sheridan.”

But the BBC report that an estimated 1500 (police estimate) were in attendance today,
maybe we should ask a man who knows how many people he was looking out on today, Tommy Sheridan, if he thinks there were five and a half thousand FEWER people in George Square today than in October last year because I sure as hell couldn’t see the difference,

    BBC YOU ARE LYING SCUM
If you had bothered your arse to get a camera crew in a van and drive the arduous distance of a mile and a half from pathetic Quay you would have been able to make your own estimate ,
but that would have meant you would have been faced with lying directly instead of being able to palm off the estimate onto the police hence removing plausible deniability
AND WE CANT HAVE THAT CAN WE!

I was just short of 4 hours in Freedom Square, left just before 4 to get train home. I don’t know, maybe it’s the atmosphere, half-listening to speeches, looking at people, but having time to peacefully think, and I can’t help feeling that what I was thinking 3, nearly 4 years ago when posting in the Guardian (dadsarmy) is even more valid today than ever.

I worked freelance in Germany for a big blue, and they had this relationship with the union, whereby they agreed work terms amd even big project needs in terms of the employees – overtime or not, mainly. And from what I heard other companies had the same easy relationship. I think that was backed with legislation though.

So basically it seems to me, that if you take the Tories Trade Union Bill, but upend it, and agree it with the unions, but also incorporate working practices for employers, again with their agreement, you’ve got a very good setup for businesses being able to do business and make profit, but workers and their rights being looked after.

Well, that will never happen in Westminster, not even with Labour. There’s no interest or will for it to happen.

So, what’s needed for Scotland to be able to implement such an arrangement? Ummm, errr, I dunno 🙂

The mutants in the videos were holding better together posters & wearing No Thanks T shirts. Did Darling, Brown or any of the other leading lights come out to condemn the people who brought fear, intimidation and violence onto the streets of Glasgow? Did they think they should rein them in? Did anyone from bt think that the ugly mob were in any way connected to bt? Or was it a case of,, Job Done, who cares what happens now? Anyway, we can get our tame media to say it was just as bad from the Yes side.
Sturgeon & Salmond before her were always grilled about online bullying & were asked repeatedly to condemn it even if little evidence existed of threats.
Here we have real intimidation. Physical intimidation. Menacing intimidation.
Much as I don’t care for anyone in the leadership of BT I wouldn’t hold them responsible for the behaviour these unionist animals. It seems that our media didn’t think bt were in any way to blame either. Johann Lamont, before the vote accused Salmond of orchestrating the online campaign by cybernats.
Will the bbc & all other news outlets start treating us like adults. The magnifying of any transgression by snp or Yes but ignoring the huge amount of unionist misbehaviour is now a widely held view that won’t be easily shaken off. Thankfully the new media is now more trusted than the old.

@ Effie.. Well said. Was great to meet you all. It was actually Joff I recognised. Glad you made it through.

I met many people today I’ve never met before and was privileged to do so. I feel good about things. I think independence is inevitable now. But these narrow minded clowns will do everything in their power to make the transition as difficult as possible. Arseholes!!

See you at the next rally I hope. Katie, Mr Effie and the bold Joff too.

Yes, I’m positive we’ll meet again.

Funny you should say that about Joff, it seems a common theme with children & young adults with disabilities, they inspire so many people in the community, I often get “strangers” coming up and greeting Joff asking me how he’s doing, I don’t know them from Adam…the young people having their own wee celebrity status. Not the first time I’ve been relegated by Joff! Love him.

    Shug at 1117pm,

Wholly agree. Part of the problem is that Scots in general are oblivious to the many ways in which they are short changed – paying for the upgrade of London’s sewers, or the London crossrail project for example.

A concise book, setting out such facts, about how the vow has been undelivered, and how Scottish taxpayers money continues to be squandered on London infrastructure projects would be simply excellent.

This was painful viewing first time around as the images flashed across Twitter. But for me it was enough for the fire in my belly to return.

In the early hours of 19th September my thoughts were of disillusionment and a resignation that we now had put independence behind us and look to get the best we could for Scotland within the UK.

And then there was this rubbing our noses in it that appeared to being reported across the world with one exception. I wonder where eh?

The resolve was back. I sent off my application to join the SNP that night and the fight was back on once more.

    galamcennalath at 826pm,

I wholly agree with you. The Scotland act in its current form is a joke, but a very damaging joke. As you rightly say, no Government in its right mind would ever accept the imposition of legislation to impoverish its country.

It is truly an indication of just how much a cesspit Westminster is, that despite winning the referendum, London just cannot be adult enough to realise that if they truly delivered the ‘vow’ i.e full home rule, the desire for indyref 2 might disappear. Instead, yet again Westminster treats the Scots as fools, thinking that by merely saying ‘they have delivered the ‘vow’ Scots will fall for it.

As the recent poll shows, almost all Scots realise the vow was just one big lie, courtesy of our unionist loving red and blue tory chums in Scotland and at Westminster.

To this day, I still cannot fathom unionists (especially Labour) from Scotland, who are happy to short change and impoverish their own country, Scotland, just to keep their undemocratic union and London rule. It really is bizarre. Why would any sane person choose to do damage to the very country in which they and their children live.

Unionists in Scotland have a very bizarre concept of ‘self’.

Hi Onwards (hours ago – I’m not long home from Glasgow.)

“Guy at 0:37 with the Eng-Ger-Land chants”

We stayed to the very end so we could see Gerry Cinnamon. At some point, around the back of 6, Tommy Sheridan asked for a minute’s silence to show solidarity with the refugees heading for the EU. (We were still at the site of the Wings stall, at Sir Walter Scott’s feet.)

As has been typed above, the police had a generally laid-back approach. I didn’t actually see any wandering about in our vicinity until later in the afternoon. Most were wandering around in pairs but there was an inspector (? – white band on the peak of his cap), who was wandering about on his own, blethering with the pairs – and being accosted by a Yesser who wanted a selfie with him.

Just as the minute’s silence began, a couple of individuals came into the square from the south side. One of them was obviously (going by his accent) from another, more southern part, of the UK and shouted out “ENGERLUND! Britain’s better together!”

Two pairs of our finest started walking towards them, from around 50 yards away, formed into a line of four, and ‘forced’ them back, from whence they had come. The more sober, non-shouty one, was by this time, walking backwards, dragging his ‘friend’ and shouting towards the four saviours of the silence, “We’re really sorry…”

The police corralled them right back to the street, where the pair turned and headed across the road, in front of a double-decker.

I thought, “Wouldn’t that be poetic justice.” but they, somehow, got across the road without incident.

I did hear that there were no arrests within the square, the whole day, but britnats were stopped (as mentioned in previous posts here) before they could cause disruption.

This is actually the first time I’ve seen images of the full enormity of what happened in George Square in the hours following the indyref but it’s still a bit of a shock.

I hadn’t seen any images of the obey your queen stuff or the smoke canisters. Or the violence in Buchanan Street.

No doubt I have the MSM to thank for not bothering to publish any of this at the time. But a year on and I’m kind of glad I didn’t see it then.

What a contrast from the lovely festival atmosphere in George Square today.

Returning to the subject of this thread: Who organised this lumpen mob of loyalists to turn up and attack innocent young Scots in the Square?

Police Scotland must have known it was planned. I found the ‘Scottish Loyalist’ site in seconds which urged attacks on ‘Jacobites’ and ‘fenians’. I also texted the information at the time to the BBC.

I believe that Police collusion allowed this to occur…don’t tell me that it wasn’t predictable…..fifty or so turned up the night before, but outnumbered…clustered at the corner of the city chambers.

The ensuing silence of msm and Unionist politicians was predictable…but why did the SNP not kick up a row over it? And why were there not mass arrests? No-one has ever been done for conspiracy, yet if this had been a football inspired riot, there would have been salutary sentences handed out to ringleaders.

To have allowed this disgraceful, neo-Nazi display of disgusting racist and sectarian intimidation and violence in the centre of our biggest city, should have been sufficient for House and his coterie of metropolitan police pals to get their marching orders.

When Unionists talk about the ‘schism’ in Scottish society since the Referendum, they should take a long hard look at these deluded adherents of English imperialism in our society which, at the lowest level, represents the real cause of divison. As long as these neo-fascist sectarian bigots exist in organised groups and are sanctioned by institutions such as the Orange Order and Glasgow Rangers, division will continue and deepen.

Let’s face it, unless we deal legally and through political change and social ostracisation with these groups our Independence will be tainted.
