Wings Over Scotland

We’ll never have that recipe again

Posted on February 24, 2014 by

A remarkable insight into how Scottish Labour MPs see the people of Scotland, and the future that awaits us after a No vote, from an article posted on Labour Uncut today:

“Uncut recently put the point to a Scottish member of the [Parliamentary Labour Party] that while it is hard to imagine Scotland voting for an uncertain future outside the EU, keeping the UK together by playing on these fears risks perpetuating Scottish grievance against the English. They were unrepentant.

‘They need to be told. It’s like a child saying they want to play in the rain. They can do if they want but they need to know that they’ll get wet.'”

Hear that, people of Scotland? For even considering taking control of your own affairs like adults, Scottish Labour (ironically) thinks you’re behaving like stupid kids too dumb to come in out of the rain. Mm, feel the respect from your representatives.

There’s a whole extra level of irony, of course, in the fact that a No vote is much more likely to result in Scots being outside the EU. But we digress. The article goes on:

“No one denies that children can’t [sic] have fun in the rain. Getting wet, however, is unavoidable. And Osborne and Barroso have made clear just how wet an independent Scotland would get.

If Scotland only begrudgingly stays in the union, seeing it as a lesser evil than the drenching threatened by exciting [sic, presumably “exiting”], we will stay together but only on arid and vindictive terms.”

Something fun to look forward to there, then. The grotesque, sneering, juvenile and dishonest tone of the “Better Together” campaign can’t possibly result in any other kind of No vote than a “begrudging” one. We’ve been pointing that out for about two years now so it’s interesting to see its own supporters agreeing, and thereby saying that a No vote is a vote for a bitterly divided, poisonous and resentful future UK.

macarthurcake

(Though perhaps not as interesting as watching a faithful Labour site unquestioningly accepting that George Osborne and a right-wing Portugese EU mandarin must be telling the truth, and siding vigorously with them.)

But most remarkable of all is seeing them prepared to openly quote a Scottish Labour MP describing a majority of the Scottish electorate (because most polls now put the No vote below 50%, and everyone else is either a Yes or at least thinking about it) in such appallingly contemptuous, patronising, condescending terms.

We’re reminded by the comment of Mitt Romney’s disastrous reference to 47% of Americans in the 2012 US presidential election. We hope for the sake of everyone in Scotland that Labour, and their Tory allies, get the same result he did.

“No one denies that children can’t [sic] have fun in the rain. Getting wet, however, is unavoidable. And Osborne and Barroso have made clear just how wet an independent Scotland would get.

Here’s what blows my mind about it: why else would children go outside to play in the rain if not specifically to get wet? It’s fun playing in the rain! Water & wetness offers an altered state, and it’s enjoyable. And that’s the thing about rain: rain is, by definition, wet. So if a child wants to go out and play in the rain, it wants to get wet.

Look at this adorable wee thing:

    link to youtube.com

Then just think of all the positive things regarding rain:

    link to tvtropes.org

Really, this is an incredibly apt metaphor for the Unionists. The “grown-ups” of Labour cannot fathom why the Scottish people would want to go “play in the rain” (become independent) complaining that they would “get wet” (it would be hard-going because you’re independent) – they don’t realise that this is the ENTIRE APPEAL AND POINT of playing in the rain (independence) in the first place! I guess what’s happening now is the Scottish government is negotiating for an umbrella to go with their Mackintosh & wellies.

I could also bring in the burning house metaphor: “I know the house is on fire and your room’s about to explode, and the foundations are cracking, and I think the car’s gone into a sinkhole, but I don’t like the look of those clouds!”
