    “If, however, Scotland leaves the EU, along with a Northern Ireland rendered unstable ?once again by th?is week’s resignation of Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness as deputy first minister – with a consequent threat to power sharing – Wales will be yoked for ever to a Conservative-dominated England.”

A further minute passed quickly, followed by another minute, when suddenly, a different minute passed, followed by another different minute. And another. And yet another further different minute. A minute passed. I glanced at my watch. It was a minute past. This was it. A minute passed. After a moment, another minute passed. I waited a minute while a minute passed quickly past. It’s not a rebuke folks, but what will Scotland be left with when the days of anti-independence rhetoric and BBC propaganda are all behind us and it isn’t London at the top of the news agenda?

    We should be seizing upon these quiet times with positive initiatives here in Scotland and home grown progressive news coverage we do want to see. When the mainstream media has nothing more to say, that silence is the void which a new progressive Scottish media needs to fill, and fill well.

    Thats not a swipe at Wings, far from it, but just a cautionary sign that we have a lot of work to do still, unless we are happy to accept our new home grown news is going to be about shortbread production figures and the annual headcount of sheep in the Outer Hebrides. We should have some high octane news stories on standby to give folks a glimpse of what a properly functioning Scottish news agenda and media might look and feel like.

    When the Union shuts up a minute, it’s a chance for Scotland to speak.

    Because there isn’t much to read in the news < I just happened to look at Johnnie Beattie's twitter feed as there was a retweet on WOS twitter feed (yes its that quiet)

    Was drawn by the picture posted from the bridge of a supply vessel in the north sea

    Anyhoo I noticed a tweet from Simon Paterson to Johnnie Beattie concerning an item posted by an ex customs officer on the Scottish Exports that get claimed as being English (that old nutmeg)

    I am not on twitter (as a bit of self preservation and sanity) so not able to join in

    But the ex officer is correct, Scottish exports shipped through English ports are claimed as English exports, as that is how the UK's stat gathering system on exports(& imports) works

    Of course the usual idiot yoons chimed in stating its not true, including that well known pet food sales person, whose name slips me, but known to most for his idiotic views.

    The problem being is that the Scottish Government for reasons best known to itself had referred to estimates in something called ESS (Export Statistics Scotland) which is based purely on estimates and guess work and not actual hard data. ESS is a complete pile of MINCE!

    The problem lies in that fact that the UK Government's data gathering is only based on port of export, commodity, value of goods and destination. It does not include UK regions and nations that actually manufacture or produce the goods being exported.

    Johnnie Beattie, bless, has asked Derek Mackay MSP to comment and also asked if the ex customs officer can contact him to be interviewed.

    I wait with baited breath, but will not hold my breath

    Can’t provide a link, but the video is on RT Twitter at the AntiCorruption Summit held in May 2016, where David Cameron said, among other things, that countries with lots of natural resources should be helped use them for the benefit of the people – by fighting corruption.
    Such happy memories of our dear former leader – how we miss him, together with his amazing and magical Chancellor, George Osborne, who made an entire economy disappear, while we watched in awe of his powers.
    It was Osborne, with a background in building nothing in particular, who was then given the job of building up the UK economy – but then proceeded to trash it for the 99% of the population.
    It was the same Osborne who said, while no one was paying attention, that austerity was to be the normal way of life in the UK for almost everyone who was not part of the Establishment.

    Good news for ‘birders’ or should that now be wingers!: The Waxwings are here in Glasgow! Stood and watched a fab aircombat display – a flying fight with one female thrush. When heavy winter snowfalls drift down from Siberia over central Europe, small flocks of the stunningly beautiful WAXWING migrate in whats called an ‘irruption’ to our milder habitats. (They feed on the red berries in inner city gardens/parks.) Do you think we should phone Jackie Burdie. NO, better not, she’ll probably blame the NS/SNPbad guv for the harsh, frost weeks ahead.

    The Nothing People

    They do not lie;
           they just neglect to tell the truth.
    They do not take;
           they simply cannot bring themselves to give.
    They do not steal;
           they scavenge.
    They will not rock the boat;
           but did you ever see them pull an oar!
    They will not pull you down;
           they’ll simply let you pull them up and let that pull you down.
    They do not hurt you;
           they merely will not help you.
    They do not hate you;
           they merely cannot love you.
    They do not burn you;
    They just fiddle while you burn.
    They are the nothing people:
           the sins-of-omission people
           the neither-good-nor-bad
           and-therefore-worse.
    Because the good, at least keep busy trying
           and the bad try just as hard.
    Both have that character
           that comes from caring, action and conviction.
    So give me every time
           an honest sinner, or even a saint.
    But, God and Satan, get together
           and protect me from the nothing people.
    I am NOT a nothing person.

    We had the Waxwings in Stirling about 8 days ago. There was a flock of about 120 in my neighbour’s garden – stunning.
    The local thrush didn’t want the foreigners here (as she voted leave) because after about three days the immigrants had taken all the food, left her with none and moved on to other areas. After Brexit tho’ it will all be different, they’ll have to pay to come here!

    Seriously, the local thrush was giving them laldy, but to no avail. Within three days they had stripped her tree of yellow rowan berries – and others in the area – before disappearing. Now I know where they went!

    Aren’t they delightful birds, so elegant and making such a fairy-tale trilling sound. Gorgeous sight.

    Obviously left a bitterly cold Europe as we can see from the news – when there is some.

    Despite repeated requests from this intrepid reporter neither BBC not STV were willing to confirm, or deny, on the record anything about the level of darkness currently being endured by the people of Scotland. However, one or two more brave reporters did agree, off the record, that the current levels of darkness did make life extremely difficult for them to complete their work writing articles that were all SNP BAAAD.

    News is reaching our canine reporter that some canines are taking their human ‘owners’ outside for a constitutional without firstly ensuring that they, the humans, are correctly protected against what is reported to be weather that is a bit ‘nippy.’

    News from the canine police squads that humans are going skiting along on their backsides whilst out with their canine ‘owners’ are as yet unconfirmed. However, the canine police squad ask that whilst out on constitutionals all canines refrain from tugging their leads as this can, when the pavements are icy, result in human ‘owners’ end up skiting along the pavement.

    Since nothing’s happening, can I interest you in number one in an occasional series of 375 from my Place-Names of Scotland masterwork?

    “GORBALS

    Gorbaldis, 1521; Gorbels, 1731; Gorbels 1753-4; Gorbals 1759; Gorbels 1773.

    The simplest explanation for this Glasgow name is that it represents the Gaelic compound-noun construction gobhar baile, “goat farm”.

    The name has been regarded as “difficult” , perhaps because it does not conform to the expected Gaelic phrase-name structure baile na gobhair, but such compounds can be seen in other Scottish names, such as Crianlarich, critheann làrach, “aspen site”. Indeed, Watson regarded them as being “of an antique cast” and therefore of long standing.

    Whether this is true in the case of Gorbals is not clear. It may equally have been a late Gaelic construction when English was becoming more common in the Lanarkshire area and when Gaelic may have come under the influence of English word-order in forming place-names.

    The final ‘s’ in the earliest form suggests the original steading lands had been subdivided, perhaps into Meikle and Little (like Govan) or Easter/Wester.
    The intrusive ‘d’ may have resulted from illogical assimilation with Sc. bauld/bald, “bold”.”

    Meanwhile, I see some nonentity MP in Stoke has resigned for a sinecure arranged by his nice Cambridge Yooni friends in case his Brexiteer constituents stick his head on a pike.

    Mike Cassidy: interesting stuff. I was in Prague last year and when the tour guide found we were Scottish we had a friend for life. He was a Slavia supporter and knew more about Mr M than us. He wound up the “British” members of the party when we reached Prague Castle. He pointed out the American embassy and then turned to us and said, “No Scottish embassy—-yet!” with a big grin.

    The BBC are incorrigible.
    When Nicola produced the long-awaited SNP proposals to mitigate the worst of Brexit, which was by far the biggest story in Scotland and even got a spot in the main news, those BBC Scotland creeps lead Reporting Scotland with a report on an alleged paedophile priest living in Sydney, which was a three year old story, and which immediately vanished never to be heard again.
    The priest story was produced for one reason only and that was to knock Nicola off the headlines.
    They can’t help themselves. Every story must be given an SNP BAD TWIST.
    I detest everything they do.

    Talking about the BBC. Here’s what they reported on the morning of the 11th January.

    “Most of Scotland’s small firms expect conditions to deteriorate according to research carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses. It found that business confidence was at a lower level in Scotland than elsewhere in the UK. A separate report from the Bank of Scotland suggests falling levels of entrepreneurship and a decrease in the number of new start-ups here.”

    Sounds pretty bad eh?

    Here’s what the report actually said.

    “Scotland has managed to withstand a sharp decline in the number of start-up businesses in the last five years. The findings of a Bank of Scotland study reveal that 3% fewer new businesses were started in Scotland in November 2016 compared to November 2011, while the UK figure dropped by 19%. (See table 1) Regionally, the data from BankSearch shows that Wales has seen the largest decline in new start-ups, falling by over a quarter (26%). England has also been hit hard, declining by a fifth (20%). As this is where the greatest volume of new start businesses are launched, this equates to nearly 100,000 fewer new businesses created in 2016.”

    and:

    “In contrast to England and Wales, the view in Scotland is much more encouraging, with almost half (14 of 32) of Scottish regions seeing growth in the number of start-up businesses over the last five years.”

    This is BBC Scotland folks. Talking Scotland down whenever possible with cleverly worded spin. This is not news, it is anti Scotland propaganda. If it were news, they could simply have used a summary of the report, which is positive in its outlook. No, they turned it upside down, inside out to make it sound that Scotland is doing worse than the rest of the UK, when in fact the opposite is true.

    That IS interesting…

    My memory of the N.Irish High Court hearing which preceded the High Court in London and the Supreme Court hearing was the judge stating that the as a result of the G Friday agreement, the WM Government retains the right to legislate over the people of N. Ireland and that the Royal Prerog was able to be applied without the permission of the people of N Ireland. This then went to appeal in the Supreme Court.

    The Supreme Court is deciding whether London or Belfast has the correct interpretation of this point and if they can’t then it must go before the European Court of Justice… but as the goalposts have moved, might the Supreme Court also be delayed…

    Nicola .. there will be no Indyref2 in 2017 – has she had a ‘tip off’ re these delays?

    He read some of the comments out to me earlier. Jings!

    Some never going to buy the Record again – which must be good for us.

    Basically, according to my son, Nicola is a ‘nippy sweetie’.

    Some would describe me as a ‘nippy sweetie’ and my mum and gran. Nicola comes from a long line of Scottish women who are all ‘nippy sweeties’.

    It’s the ‘nippy sweeties’ who will bring us independence.

    Let us be grateful for that.

    Why does BBC SCOTLAND have a space in their schedule for this US of A orientated sportsfest, when they have no space to feature what’s happening in the Highland League?

    Found myself strangely uplifted by the “Don’t caricature Europe’s Court.

    When you actually look at what they like to caricature, but then think about who it is doing the caricaturing, it will make you kinda angry. Did me anyway.

    It’s so rare living in the toxic U.K. media swamp to hear anything positive or constructive said about Scotland or Europe, and that needs to change or there will possibly be more “Brexits”.

    I don’t know about other folks, but I want to see Scotland forging ahead in Europe. No more grubby, malignant BritNat pish slagging everybody else off, but lungfuls of a purer, fresher air, and news with substance to really get your teeth into. European status isn’t just a badge I’m entitled to wear. It’s a badge that I want to wear. You attack Europe, you attack me. It is my European Court that you caricature.

    My European status is as good a fit for me as my Scottish status, 2nd place of course, but it’s not the occasion for marching bands or waving flags, it’s just ordinary and mundane, it’s simply what I am. Perhaps that’s why I feel pretty indifferent about “slipping” my British status, geographical references not withstanding, because increasingly, it’s being British which doesn’t seem to fit and requires such conscious effort to maintain. Brexit has never felt like a matter for us, but from the beginning, it has felt like interference from “them”. What does that say about me, when the “them” in that formula are the British?

    @Lenny Hartley

    The swastika is an old Hindu religious symbol. One idea for its origin is that it resembles the tail of a comet seen from behind. If the nucleus is spinning the outgassing gives you a crude swastika. Remember back before electric lighting the nights were DARK and the sky BLAZED. I can still remember the arc of the Milky Way seen from Southern NZ.

    Couple of years ago an Indian guy in Auckland painted a swastika on his roof as a good luck/devotion sign. In all innocence. Sadly he had to paint over it.

    The Nazis owe the Hindus a big apology.

    Then, we wouldn’t be having this transfer speculation, Rangers and Celtic would have been in a bidding war for the exotic Spanish striker Juan Fittit.

    Fascinating links/stuff on here recently, seems to me that national-identity is misunderstood, when defined by the winners of wars.

    The UK treats victorious ‘war winning’ generations as though all descendants and citizens should ‘be more like them’.

    There is so much WW2 stuff in our culture, that many people under 70 years old have a fondness for the spirit of a war that ended .

    Scary, actually, London has never suffered to the same degree as other EUROPEAN cities, never raped, occupied or suppressed.

    Only in unionist ‘britain’ do people want live like it’s the 1940s.

    Scotland is ancient, with an overriding wisdom, managing to protect our unique laws and cultural values. It has a true outgoing personality..

    England has history..but its wisdom (if it’s any) is only as old as it’s monarch, the greatest under God..

    Weirdos.

    Oh, there’s more UK war on the way for sure. The markets are just trying to work who can be punished next without crashing the market.
