Wings Over Scotland is a (mainly) Scottish political media digest and monitor, which also offers its own commentary. (More)
I think he’s what you call a numbnut.
So, OK for xenophobic little Englanders to end ‘Treaties’ but not for the Scots. Will they never learn that this is the recipe for internal strife, Ireland being our closest example?
I’ve asked this Q before if we don’t get a Sect. 30 why don’t our (majority MP’s) hand the Speaker a ‘Notice of Quitting’ and walk out?
So the obvious conclusion from your verbal meanderings, Mr. Hunt, is that the UK is a Soviet-style prison camp…
Why is the British Foreign Secretary touring Scotland? Insulting us. He can do that from home.
Alex Salmond puts him in his place

Completely inured to the double standards. Almost pointless highlighting them unless we, collectively, have the balls to do something about it.
‘Politicians go back on their word’ is hardly news.
Hunt by name, Hunt by nature
Keep sending them Miss Treeza.
Keep right on putting us uppity Jocks in our place.
We love it, deep down.
We really really do ma’am.
😉
@Ian B
That’s what I thought too, shades of Osborne who single-handedely added about 5% to YES support, though he even managed to hack off unionist papers and journos.
British imperialism and soviet imperial share(d) many similarities.
Bloody hell Dr Doom is quick off the mark tonight.
” Almost pointless highlighting them …..”
Dr Doom says the Wings post is almost pointless. Your never ending doom laden posts are pointless. We’re doomed doomed.
Cameron B Brodie@9.40pm
I can see that. I can also see our old friend Prof Tomkins feeling at home in both regimes.
“Almost pointless highlighting them . . .”
Shhhh, you know what.
Who can trust a foreign secretary who doesn’t know difference between Slovakia and Slovenia then tells Scotland you can’t have a democratic referendum on self government.
Also how can Unionists defend their vote to oppose Offensive acts at Football Act after events at Easter Road
The comment about the “concentrating on the NHS” was interesting. Jeremy Hunt created such a disaster in the NHS down south, to the point where they stopped reporting on indicators that are embarrassing.

” … I’ve asked this Q before if we don’t get a Sect. 30 why don’t our (majority MP’s) hand the Speaker a ‘Notice of Quitting’ and walk out?”
And you have had it answered as many times as you have asked it. Auld Rock.
In no way will there be a situation that allows the Westminster Establishment the slightest chance to take legal action and have the Scottish actions ruled as being illegal. The fact is that the United Kingdom legal system is an anomaly because there is no such thing as a United Kingdom Rule of Law.
There is the independent rule of law of the Scottish Kingdom and the independent rule of law of the English Kingdom and Westminster rules by use of the English rule of law.
Thus there are legal doubts about the so called United Kingdom Supreme Court. Any excuse given to Westminster could involve many years of legal arguments. If the SG are wise, and the SG and SNP are full of lawyers, no chances of things getting mired down in the Westminster dominated legal system.
On the good side the law, so far, has favoured the Scottish claims. This, of course, is because they have the rights of things and, importantly, they have the documentary evidence to support their case.
There is absolutely no doubt the United Kingdom was constituted by the Treaty of Union and that Treaty is an international treaty between two equally sovereign kingdoms. Which means that the United Kingdom is legally a union of only two kingdoms and is not a country nor is it a union of four countries with England in charge and ruling over three dominion countries.
Sooner or later the matter will arrive in the international courts – and with good tactics- avoid the so called United Kingdom Supreme Court and years of legal wrangling.

As well as dealing with Britain’s structural racism, my professional training was specifically focused on addressing Britain’s colonial legacy. That’s the Royal Town Planning Institute for you, bloody do-gooders. 😉
Of course the UK is actually England, so in essence its England that is refusing permission for an indy2, if we ever needed proof that we are just a colony this is it.
The thing is Scotland didn’t cease to be a country when it joined England in a union so what we are seeking is not independence but rather a reverting back to what we were.
So this arrogant Hunt who has come north to lecture the natives can p### off back south and stay there.
o/t. Just to say i`m sick to death of hearing and reading about “Britain`s” knife crime epidemic when of course is England`s problem and never a mention about Scotland`s success in reducing the number of incidents involving a knife.
Please get us out of this awful union.
For anyone who might be questioning why the Brexit negotiations have gone so badly for the UK and made them a laughing stock then this article helps to point out the reason why.
Those that are in charge of governing over 65 million people really don’t have a clue what they’re doing. It’s worse than incompetence, it’s idiocy and a dereliction of duty.
Theresa May most incompetent Prime Minister ever bar none.
Jeremy Hunt second most incompetent Foreign Secretary coming in just behind Boris Johnson.
Chris Grayling the man that has cost taxpayers over a billion quid of your money, totally fucked up the probation service, legal aid, prisons and the justice system. Went on to make a hash of transport and still refuses to resign.
Karen Bradley the Northern Ireland secretary who didn’t know that people in NI voted along sectarian lines. She’s now wishing she kept her big mouth shut over illegal acts carried out by the security services during the troubles for which she fully exonerated them.
David Davies, Liam Fox, Michael Gove, Dominic Rabb ect ect ect.
That’s who’s currently in charge not just of the UK but Scotland as well and it’s basically the number one reason why Scotland needs to elect it’s own government.
That can only come with Independence, let’s never forget that.
They just don’t see the parallel logic. Whatever they think about their UK – EU relationship, we can say much the same about Scotland – UK.
But only up to a point.
What has the UK done positive for Scotland in recent decades? Scratches head.
What has the EU done positive for Scotland and the UK? Well … safe food, high environmental standards, safe products, clean beaches, protected regional food and drink, easy travel, workers rights, ability to work and study abroad, etc etc..
There are unions which add to our wellbeing and there are unions which harm us.
There are unions which need dissolved and there are unions which offer valuable benefits.
OT
OK, this is interesting, from a Herald article:
“The UK will be plunged into uncertainty and may never leave the European Union if MPs reject the Brexit deal, Theresa May said. ”
I’ve thought for some time this could be a reason for all the “blundering” from day 1 after May took over. In which case May might must be the cleverest PM the UK has had. So it’s an either or – she’s very clever and highly competent at what she does, or she’s thick and incompetent. But she does seem to be upping the pace on that possibility – either to scare the MPs into supporting her plan, or even to scare them all off the idea of Brexit completely.
Events might make the choice clearer. Or if it’s like Brexit so far, not.
Vaguely related and since the S30 & Osborne’s name was mentioned by @Indyref2 upthread, perhaps readers could clarify for me:
Apparently some new Indy documentary featured quotes from the players at the time. On the subject of Westminster retaining total control of the referendum; Osborne apparently said something along the lines of “that’s what Spain would do” – Implying that the Spanish constitution, in relation to Total Sovereignty & ‘secession’ (eg Catalonia etc) was well known and studied as an example and tactic for keeping Scotland from ever having a ‘lawful’ right to a referendum.
Deary me that’s a tortured paragraph, anyway, as I’d rather gouge my eyes out than watch telly and too busy to research it – Did he say that? Very interesting if he did way back in 2014 (and by extrapolation considered policy much earlier) If it had been considered and they had every trick available to make it so, why didn’t they? If not then (must have been good reason not to) why would it be viable now?
Methinks it was thrashed out well before and the consensus was they’d be on a hiding to nothing trying it and Osborne was quickly disabused of the notion. Ergo: refusal of an Indyref2 must be a non-starter as well.
Naughties finest moment.
@Iain mhor
Didn’t watch it, didn’t even record it. But that discussion took place I think in 2011/12, when Cameron was talking about holding the Ref himself. Either meant it, or was putting the pressure on Salmond, was the question.
Iain mhor @ 10.23
I think they said it had been decided,that a referendum controlled from and by Westminster would not be trusted…
And… Alex Salmond would exploit that Westminster was putting itself in charge during the campaign,as a further sign of Westminster dictating to Scotland,and stoke resentment from it.
I think Jeremy Hunts a good guy. Aye right,only joshing, he’s a thick fuck!
It’s no surprise that two of the largest colonial empires – Spain and ‘Britain’ – have the greatest problems letting go.
That colonial mindset persists with both even when reality tells them they are a spent force and yet the Soviet Union with all its similarities is still their model for the bad guy.
Who votes for fuckwits like this?
yesindyref2 says:
She’s done some damned strange things! A plan or a mess?
Article 50 with no plan.
Red lines yet pursued a settlement which those lines often made impossible.
She behaved as if she was trying very hard to lose the 2017 GE.
She seems to regularly offend the EU at exactly the wrong moments.
She rejected the EU plan for NI in the single market and insisted on the backstop. Then she rejected the backstop.
Time will tell what all the odd behaviour is in aid of. Sabotaging the process, but to what end?
@Street Andrew
“Who votes for fuckwits like this?”
People just like them.
Looks more and more likely we are out of the EU by March 29th, with a short technical extension to sort out WTO rules and other such documents to stop a total shutdown at the Ports and airports.
Since the 1990’s Gorbachev, Yeltsin and Putin. 150Million people have realised self determination and self governance, (former USSR) The Russian population (USSR) has halved. For 300 million (on par with the US) to 150Million. Helped by the EU, financially and economically as member States. The EU a force for good in Europe and the world to stop war and starvation in Europe after the 11WW.
The UK Gov (Tories) cannot cope with 50,000 people a year (ebb & flow) coming to the UK to work and help the economy. They plan to crash the UK, EU and world economy. Instead of intergration they plan to crash the world economy for no reason. Telling lies all the time.
The Russian saved the West in the 11WW 26Million Russians died. The Russian economy was devastated. Saving the West.
Since the 1990’s Russia has tried to build up its economy to stop starvation and wars and build a successful economy to make Russian prosper. Despite many trial and set backs. Quite similar to the EU in certain respects. Trying to make Europe a better place. A more peaceful and successful place,
The US/UK (France) decided in their wisdom to blow the Middle East (world) to bits. Spending £Billions destroying other people’s economy and their own. Raking up unecessary debt and causing strife, sickness and death in their own countries. They are supposed to be running properly but are contemptible.
To cut a long story short Hunt is a lying psycho bastard who wants not only to ruin the world economy but to start a war with Russia who pose absolutely no threat to the UK. The treat to the world economy and war are the unionists at Westminster. Total bloody criminals.
Hunt is responsible for the death of people in the UK. The Tories (ConDems) cut the NHS fubding £4Billion a year from 2015 to 2020 £20Billion (saving and supposed efficiencies) Just outrageous. Hunt was Health Secretary and as a Tory minister is responsible for the death of millions of people (illegal wars included.
Gorbachev, Yeltsin and Gorbachev aided by the EU helped 150Million people to self determination, and freedom. Within EU protection in Europe.
The Westminster Tory Gov. Not elected in Scotland. Cannot agree to aid and release 5 million people in Scotland to self determination and self governance as democracy intented with the help of the EU citizens and human rights legislation. Rather taking £Billions out of Scotland to pay for their catastrophe and appalling policies. Illegal wars, financial fraud, tax evasion. Hinkley Point, HS2 and Trident a total waste of money. The Tory slush fund.
The Westminster Tories+ Unionists have ruined the Scottish Oil & Gas sector, the fishing and farming industry. They have caused death in the Oil & Gas sector, fishing and farming sector. Not enforced UK Health and Safety rules. Putting Tory high taxes on the Oil & Gas sector when the price had fallen costing thousands of jobs in Scotland. Allowed fishing discards throwing back dead fish for years, The Tories taking £147Million CAP EU funding, plus other funding intended for poorer farmers in Scotland.
Hunt is a malicious hypocrite, a criminal who is lining his pockets with taxpayers money while trying to destroy the world economy and start WW3 – with his associates. The Tory psycho bastards. Their own description.
Some of the things Osbourne has been saying are unbelievable. Cameron and Osbourne are the ones who started this mess. Taking absolutely no responsibility and blaming others. Absolutely no self awareness. Just astounding. They should be put in jail. In Spain, Russia, US or any other country they would be. Held to account. In the UK crooks get knighthoods. Often to keep them quiet.
Iraq War, Lockerbie, Dunblane kept secret for 100 years to cover up Westminster unionist criminality.

@ Cameron B Brodie
Would this be like the people on Brexit Vox Pops who declare ‘we fought the war and we won single-handed against the Nazis’ when they weren’t born until after WWII?
Thanks peeps, So pretty much well in advance of 2012 the concept of rubbering an Indyref was ruled out. It of course still begs the question why?
Acknowledging @LizG suggesting it revolved around a trust issue, I have to suspect it ran deeper. I am aware (vaguely) that legal minds have discussed it at length and concluded ‘lawfullness’ (as opposed to legality) has never been tested. My suspicion is that their own advice was not to attempt putting it to a proof inviting defeat. I see little reason to suspect that advice to have changed.
The difference (if there is one) might only lie in the politics of the time. If it could be argued that there was a modicum of decorum and intelligence pre-2014 in the WM government, which precluded such a rash gamble – and that the Scottish government was well aware of their predicament and argument (both morally and lawfully) That does not mean that this insane, incompetent and desperate government today, would not take that course – yet this does not resolve the question – was it mere timidity pre 2014, or strong argument against putting this to the proof anywhere near a judiciary?
If not timidity, then assume today, the argument against denying an Indyref is still as strong as it ever was and it would be foolish of the government to attempt to deny an Indyref2. If anything defines the government at WM today, the epithet “foolish” is apt. One would have to deduce that May’s government would be on the same potential hiding if attempting a denial as Cameron/Osbournes was, but they would be just dumb enough to ignore advice and try it, at their peril.
The Westminster Tory unionists want to start a war with Russian. Johnston was wanting to put in the Military and start a war on the Russia border. As soon as Trump got elected Johnstone was trying to start military action on the Russian border. Trump refused. So Johnstone had to back down as usual with his total madcap schemes. It would be going on now for three years. With endless death and destruction. Costing wasted £Billions.
Trump did put sanctions on Russia to damage the Russian economy. Not because he wanted to but because he had to. To appease the hawks. Some of the CIA/Fed were calling Trump a ("Tractor" - Ed) and a Russian agent because he would not start Military action on the Russia border. They called him a ("Tractor" - Ed) and a Russian agent because he wanted to and had talks with Putin. All the US Presidents and US Presidents have has talks secret and other. More peace and consideration came because of it. Reductions of nuclear weapons treaties and more peace and understanding.

Well…the media has encouraged a flourishing of the “old-fashioned” personality, and British popular culture has been rather macho and superior towards Others, for some time now. This is a characteristic of neo-liberal society and government. International Relations shapes national policy, to a large extent, and neo-liberalism is intensely “Realist” in it’s approach to International Relations.
That’s why I keep on pointing to the Realist logic of Scottish independence. There’s no ideological resistance from an International Relations perspective, IMHO. 😉
My immediate reaction to Mr Hunt’s bold statement was that it seemed so strange that he had shot the blot so early.
Was he briefed to make that statement?
Or is he in Teresa May’s bad books for shooting off his mouth?
Arrogance and stupidity or a cunning plan?
Me, I think Hunt’s attitude falls very firmly into the Arrogance and Stupidity Camp.
Perhaps Hunt has been told to say what he said, to see the reaction ?
Trying to gauge the Scots mood to see how they react to no S.30.
@galamcennalath
I think anything is possible. It did cross my mind months back that even May and Sturgeon could have something going – but there’s been no move to change the Scotland Act to make an S30 unneccessary.
I think preactically any theory under the line here is and has been possible, though maybe the most likely is just arroganace and incompetence – and perhaps after a no-deal Brexit, real negotiations start as someone posted a link to (maybe Nana).
What’s also interesting is the poind rose, and is at 1.16 EUR and 1.30 YSD which is quite good considering it was expected to be par at the Euro.

All the US and Russian Presidents have had talks, secret and otherwise. Since the 1950’s and before. The 1950’s when Churchill, with CIA/M15 assistance was taking all Iran’s Oil. Overthrowing and discredit the elected PM until he ended up in jail. For wanting a share. Than re-imposed the despised Shah destroying the democracy. The papers can be accessed in a US Gov institution. Disclosing CIA/M15 involvement. Previously secret. The first time it happened. Followed by many others. To overthrow others and take the assets.
‘The Confession of an Economic Hit Man’. John Perkins which nearly did not get published.
Chelsea Manning is back in jail for refusing to testify, again, about the WikiLeaks disclosure of military secret actions. Saying they already have the information.

The 9 Billionth barrel of oil has now passed through the

9 Billion since 1975…I will let that sink in for a second..
All on LinkedIn….
“Today we are celebrating with guests and customers the significant milestone of the nine billionth barrel of oil passing along the Forties Pipeline System (FPS) and sharing with them our plans for the future. Commissioned back in 1975, today the pipeline delivers almost 40% of UK oil production from over 80 fields in the North Sea.
Under INEOS, we are looking forward and we are investing to ensure the pipeline remains “safe, reliable and competitive to 2040 and beyond”. link to lnkd.in
Huhn! Seems UKgov are trolling Scotland again.
Hunt is a blunt instrument in a suit, so not the most subtle of strokes from Ms May. How and ever, if they believe the Scottish government or the electorate will rise to the bait? Thur ontae plums! 🙂
@yesindyref2
“I like the unionists talking about an “illegal referendum”.
Me too. I’ve been of the opinion for a while now that there needs to be be pain in order to jolt people here into action. Things need to get worse in order for folk to wake up.
The £ has gone down against the EU for the last ten years. It wa €1.40 ten years ago Now it is €1.14. Even without the undemocratic, destructive EU Ref. The Tories implemented,illegally. They are not fit people to represent people under the Representation of the Peopke’s Act, They lie about that as well. They lie about migration. They lie about numbers. They lie about policy. They lie about other countries, They lie about everything. They are not fit to represent people and they lie about that as well. So do all the other Parties. They are the same, No wonder people are sick fed up of the Unionist politics and the rest. In fact it can influence people not to vote. Damage democrscy. . They lie about that as well.
The SNP are so successful because they are funded by their members. Not Trades Unions and banks/corporate etc. Institutions that have other agendas, Usually to fleece the public. It means they can do the right thing, implement the right policies without so much outside manipulative interference. Good smart, well informed people who care about others. Fir a change They want Scotland to be a better place to live in. They have a duty to do it. They are achieving it as well. Despite the odds stack up against them.
Thank goodness for people’s support. Each and every one of them. Rev Stu, Nana and everyone who do the research so successfully. All the shared information from everyone. Unionist free so they cannot destroy the website, which they would like to do, every minute of every day. Rev Stu is too fit for them. Counter acts them in every way. Altruistic. The unionists have destroyed every other website with tittle tattle and lies deliberately. To stop correct information getting through and out, They corrupted the Media. They do it deliberately as a policy. Independence supporters were constantly deleted and banned as a deliberate policy by corporates to stop debate and people became bored with it. . So they had no forum. Now they is an alternative space and narrative on the internet. A collective of like minded people which becomes a relevant force. To counter against the falsehoods. Spectacular.
@robin says: 9 March, 2019 at 6:49 am:
” … why has this not yet happened”
Some of it already has but only to a very limited extent. It did, though, establish some very important points in Scotland’s favour. Even the unionist’s own Supreme Court has had to concede important matters in Scotland’s favour. It will eventually come to a head.
@yesinyref2
Indeed, Bernard Ponsonby’s attitude to Independence softened noticeably after the Sermon on the Pound and he had pursued Osborne into his car while being roundly ignored. It was almost as though he suddenly realised how Scotland feels.
@ScottieDog
I hadn’t really thought of that angle, but yeah, the more times people hear it from the unionists the better. You could picture some of them thinking “Why would a referendum be illegal”? Or maybe firther “Why would Scotland need Westminster’s permission to hold a referendum on our future?”. Maybe even including “I thought we were supposed to be the most powerful devolved parliament in the world.”.
The angle I was thinking more of was that if Holyrood legislates for a referendum including date and it passes, and it’s challenged in court and gets approved, then it’s clearly not “illegal” as it went through the court(s), so the unionists who’ve been saying they’d “boycott an illegal referendum” wouldn’t have a leg to stand on, plus they’d have humiliated themselves, probably all the way to court 🙂
Mmm, not sure which is the stronger of those two. But in any case the Unionists have made a rod for their own back.
Oh dear. *tears*
@Muscleguy
Yes, back in the days when STV was good. He also didn’t like it much when Fallon’s aide brushed him off. But he seems to be on less these days, and STV has got worse. Probably a connection. According to an article I was too busy to read properly the last couple of weeks, STV has a good future as an independent channel after its STV2 costly demise. Maybe some “tainted” money got invested and changed its editorial line.

Running out of popcorn.
‘What an absolute Hunt, eh readers?’ – Did you mean Berk?
The Edinburgh Act allowed for another referendum if their was any material change in matters as Sturgeon put it (as an example)”if Scotland is taken out of Europe against it’s will”
Thatcher said “all Scotland need do, if it wishes Independence is to return a majority of SNP MPs”
A majority of MSPs has voted for another referendum, it is therefore the will of the Scottish Parliament.
All of these conditions have been met. Under WHAT circumstances will we EVER be granted another referendum? Why does a country need to ASK permission to hold a referendum of IT’S OWN PEOPLE to leave a ‘union’??
If you need permission to do so then it is NOT a union, it is ownership…
