How the Daily Mail works
Sometimes it’s the smallest, most trivial things that give you away. Graham Grant is the Home Affairs Editor of the Scottish Daily Mail, and earlier this morning he tweeted this snarky dig at prominent independence supporter and pundit Pat Kane, also of the primarily-1980s band Hue And Cry:
Ostensibly it’s a throwaway gag aimed at puncturing an opponent’s pomposity and over-inflated self-regard while portraying the journalist as an arch, wise cynic.
But hold on a second.
Because what Kane actually says couldn’t be any clearer, or any further away from what Grant claims. What Kane says is that there are three “brackets” of artists – a lower one inhabited by most bands including his own, a higher one including the likes of the Beatles and a stellar one that’s the preserve of the likes of Stevie Wonder.
In other words, what he’s very explicitly saying is that Hue And Cry are definitely NOT “in the same bracket as The Beatles and Stevie Wonder” – which is the precise opposite of how the Mail hack snidely represents it.
Grant relies on the fact that people will see he’s included the quote, skim-glance it to see that it does indeed include the words “Beatles” and “Stevie Wonder” and assume he must be presenting it accurately. They’ll go away with the impression of Pat Kane that Grant wants them to have, which is diametrically at odds with the reality.
That doesn’t matter a great deal when you’re just talking about old pop bands, but it’s a mindset and modus operandi that permeates everything the Daily Mail does, and it’s always wise to remember it.
Hue And Cry weren’t our kind of thing, if we’re being honest. (We’re a Jesus And Mary Chain kind of website.) But we do prefer a hue and cry to a Cheap Trick.
“Hue and Cry” is the perfect description of what the Mail does is it not?
As a band Hue and Cry were a bit girlie for my liking. Definitely more of a Pink Fairies fan myself 😀

I *think* I know what he means by that – he’s saying they essentially had the catchy pop tune and the artier, indulgent Sgt Pepper type of thing. Obviously there were lots of VARIATIONS of both but they all fell into one of those two types, whereas H&C really only had that one pop/soul/jazz sort of number. (Not sure what Stevie Wonder’s three are.)

Hey! I liked their first two albums 🙂 Good pop songs and all that. Even saw them in 1988 at the Kentish Town Forum or Town and County (my memory isn’t so good). Not listened to anything they’ve done since that second album but they’re a worthy Scottish band, preferable to Deacon Blue (sorry, Ricky).
I skim read Grant/ Daily Mail and came away with the impression, “Arse”. Doesn’t always work the way they hope eh?

Whether to your taste or not. Pat is a great vocalist and Greg a great melody writer. I don’t have insular tastes so like The Soup Dragons,Paulo Nuttini,The Smiths,Jesus and Mary chain,Hugh & Cry,Beethoven, Dave Brubeck,Katy Perry Jimmy Shand.Music should never be compartmentalised as a fashion. You need to have wide tastes to have a broad understanding.

I’m not sure how much more information you could need when it comes to the Daily Mail. How many examples of them distorting or flat-out reversing the truth will it take? I could probably give you a list of 100 without too much trouble by lunchtime.
Most newspapers really have one outrage in them. The Scotsman has two, and the Daily Mail has about six million.
I don’t care about who did or not not write good songs. That is, as far as I am concerned, not the point.
What I do care about that we have a rag that masquerades as a newspaper, that employs staff who are chronically incapable of understanding English, and who constantly create screaming headlines that are, at the least, total distortions of the facts, and in some cases (in my opinion) are out and out lies deliberately designed to decieve the public.
I wish we could get them under the Trades Descriptions Act.
The four basic premises of writing: Clarity, Brevity; Simplicity; and Humanity.
Sadly most journalists lack three of them and suffer an abbreviated version of the fourth. They are just simple.
Like Robin McAlpine, Pat Kane is another high(ish) profile person who is prepared to be honest and acknowledge the contribution of Wings to the independence debate.
Other hacks would rather choke than admit that Wings is knocking them out of the park.
(Let’s face it that’s what this drip-drip assault on pro-indy voices is really about).
Hue and Cry were definitely not my cup of tea (I’m much more a Cheap trick gal). But I really applaud and enjoy his important contributions to the independence debate, and I love to see a lying and cynical hack (GG) get his come-uppance for this unnecessary and misguided jibe in a tabloid rag.
My music tastes go back to the 50’s when I could actually understand the clearer diction of these musicians. I actually liked Dolly Partin’s big hits (correct spelling). I couldn’t name one recording of Hue and Cry, or many of that ilk. So what? All credit to Pat for having the guts and intellect to stick up for Independence.
I cringe at the “celebrity” airhead interviews on the telly and the likes of the Daily Mail hysterical headlines on the newsstands. Lots of good folk artistes were never allowed anywhere near a TV studio and unlike Pat, could actually string sentences together and spoke out for their class and country. I suspect Pat suffered from the same media prejudice.
Struggling to recall the one Hue and Cry song here. Also a bit disappointed that the Rev has clearly never listened to Cheap Trick’s Live at the Budokan album with such lyrical genius as…

Pat is incredibly articulate. Very likeable and never loses the rag. He is an old school political scientist. Understands the mechanisms of government and the history of socialism and activism. A passionate Scot as well as a social Democrat.

My grand-dad was a wee pal of his when they were boys and they grew up together in extremely impoverished circumstances in the mining villages of Fife in the early twentieth century. There are many wonderful tales I could tell which would completely blow out of the water the “shortbread tin” sneers I often hear.
(Another wonderful old Scots character maligned and misunderstood. Hmmm. Sound familiar? (Cringeing Proud Scot buts….)
To anybody who would deny the huge contribution he made to Scottish world-wide recognition – not to mention the huge voluntary amounts of graft he put in for charity and for the comfort of individuals in distress – I say you must be a surly and churlish cringer indeed. He gave pleasure, through his music, to thousands of Scots and exiles of a certain generation.
But there were also a lot of great things he did behind the scenes.

I was around in the Beatles/Stevie Wonder era, and the former far outranked the latter in output, critical acclaim – even as a pop group – and world-wide popularity. You’re talking at least 20 hits to one. I have only a vague memory of, maybe, three Stevie Wonder songs.

I always wondered why people said the majority of the 600.000 scots living in england would have voted no. I never believed that for one minute, the majority of scots i come across, celtic supporters and other provincial scots football team supporters were predominantly yes, the only exception were unionist rangers supporting scots, who are in a minority down here as opposed to the others mentioned. So i believe there would have been a majority yes vote among scots ex pats.

Jimmy Shand and my Grandad, as boys, used to roam around the farms in Fife looking for labouring/shepherding jobs to keep the wolf from the door. But they would, when they could, treat themselves and team up outside a certain football ground on a Saturday afternoon. (Can’t remember whether it was East Fife or Raith Rovers now, as my Grand-dad is long departed – sob).
Jimmy used to play his wee squeezebox (such as he could afford at the time), and my Grandad would hold out his flat cap for ha’pennies from the arriving crowds. As soon as they had enough to pay the entrance ticket they’d pack up the squeezebox and go in to watch the game.
Words cannot express the extent to which I dearly wish I could sit those two gentlemen down right now, and speak to them about the current Scottish politics. I can’t speak for Jimmy S but I do know that my Grandad, who was a miner then a railwayman, was involved in the General Strike of 1926 and was an active participant in those early essential years of the Labour party in Fife. He would be gutted to see now what they fought so hard for had become.
I had an emotional chat with my Mum about this on the night before the referendum. I asked her what she thought Grandad would have been voting if he’d still been alive.
No doubt about it, she says. He’d be voting “Yes”.

As a four decades “collector” of music I understand where Pat is coming from. He is not comparing Hue and Cry to the Beatles but, rather, he is saying that is what pop musicians like himself and his brother aspire to and what’s worng with that?
I also get the jist of his “we were a one trick pony, the Beatles had two tricks and Stevie had three” comment, though personally I find the Beatles hard to beat much as admire some of Stevie’s stuff.
There is a great scene in Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood (please watch if you haven’t done so already – an astonishhingly good film) in which the dad, played by Ethan Hawke, has put together a CD of songs by members of the Beatles after they broke up. He calls it the Black Album and goes on to explain how their solo output on it’s own may have sounded less than impressive but when you mash them altogether on one CD it’s the Beatles all over again!

…what a surprise. The BBC Scotland are telling use the penny extra proposed by Labour would ease austerity…shock news more money would help. We will have more money ONLY if we tax everyone earning over 11k pounds a year.
The spin forgets who is paying for this windfall to ease Westminster cuts. A pity the BBC cannot bring itself to investigate the rebate system – how will it work? What will it cost? Is the rebate taxable?

I think it’s fairly obvious that there was an element of people being legally registered to vote in the referendum on the basis of once having lived in Scotland or promising to do so. That is well within the rules as long as you don’t vote more than once in any given election. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sheer number of postal and proxy votes meant that it was near impossible to properly scrutinise them all.
Even allowing for those who may have misreported how they voted and that given those might actually be more likely to claim to have voted with the majority the results would still have been a narrow victory of close to 1% for NO.
In addition there may be an element of some who actually voted No in a postal vote and subsequently changed their minds as the polling day approached.
Fortunately with the introduction of Scottish Tax codes we’ve a method of deciding who gets a vote based on a willingness, or otherwise, to pay tax to Holyrood.
There are also three levels of journalism.

Bank of England deputy governor Ben Broadbent told BBC Radio 5live’s Wake Up To Money this morning that the oil price crash is good for Britain’s economy
“I think it’s a net good,” he said to the BBC. He said that the 7% rise in real wages over the last two years has largely been down to “the drop in oil prices. That’s boosted consumption and UK growth overall.”
“It was only in the latter part of 2012, once confidence about the Eurozone had begun to come back, that the UK economy really got going. So, I would date the recovery not from 2008 or 2009, but actually from early 2013.
“And since then we’ve enjoyed three years of pretty solid growth certainly in the labour market.”
The price for Brent oil is just over $34 per barrel at the moment as of 7 a.m. GMT and the price for crude oil is around $31.60.

So we are not alone in Europe, giving up the msm seems to be more common than I thought.
Stevie Wonder was way more talented than Ray Charles and different musically. He was a prolific writer and had a long career. I remember other musicians saying he was way ahead of his time. He was a musician’s musician.

Mike Cassidy, good shout some of Richard Hawley’s is stunning. Can I mention a wonderful American band I found recently – Lord Huron. Two albums,27 songs, no fillers just amazing song after amazing song.
I always liked Pat Kane, the guy, much more than I did his music, and, more recently his writing, which I find to be a bit patchy, scattershot and a tad bland.
But, he always comes across as a really decent, well meaning guy, with a good heart and a smart head. There’s very little malice in his writing and I’ve no doubt he’ll get better at it.
If I was a Scottish Daily Mail journalist, Pat Kane is so far down the list of people I’d be going after and if i was to take a pop at Kane, it’d be for some of his more political writing, not his musical musings.
Is this the life of a Unionist Scribe; trawl the papers, social media, the telly, for anything, absolutely anything that might be construed by one’s loyal readers as a smudge on thon target’s character, constitution, intellect or acumen. Did the fruit ever hang so low?

The way they spin words is insidious. I’m a Pat Kane supporter though his is not my favourite kind of music. As someone else said I admire Pat and Robin McAlpine for staying true to their own standards and trying to be inclusive in their yes ideals.
As for Clapper57 suggestion of who Spanner is, I had wondered the same thing, especially as he has a new show coming up and his politics are of the correct leaning. I’d discounted him though since the tweets, even the funnier ones by Spanner, aren’t that funny – but then the Unspun show was asking for writers to contribute to it, even non professionals, so perhaps he isn’t funny unless reading someone else’s lines.
Keep up the good work of showing how headlines are twisted Stuart, and thank you, I’ll keep reading with interest.

The ‘vow’ had an effect right enough. It gave waverers an excuse to vote no IMO and the media sold it for all it was worth to cement an image in popular perception. How and ever the big risk ittook in implementing this strategy was always going to be the aftermath of the vote. It relied heavily on a. a big win and b.the usual suspects getting back to business as usual in short order
Neither occurred and here is where the swing back of the risk comes into play. The downside of the strategy was what we are seeing all around us today. It was always going to come down to delivery of what the population were led to believe was ‘on the table’.
Now those who sold the lie face an engaged and angry populace calling the lie out for what it was and those who were used and abused for their loyalty reacting as only those betrayed or used can react.
Doesn’t matter what the Record or the wider media say, they are now regarded by a great deal of the population as a poisoned well. No, there is no hiding place either for Cameron or the media and the clock is ticking down.

NICOLA Sturgeon is under intense pressure to abandon her Valentine’s Day deadline to seal a deal on new tax powers for Holyrood after David Cameron intervened to brand it “artificial”.

There is only one reason Sarwar wants into Holyrood, and that’s to be top Labour dog, surely Dugdale , and A Rowley recognise his intentions.
This is a situation which P.R. does not serve the voting public, they, Sarwar and Docherty , were turfed out of public office by the voting public, so why should they be able to regain public office, by the back door?!, “first past the post” system would have sorted that out.

I would love to see a televised debate between this trio of absolute chancers and, say, three candidates from the Solidarity or SSP or Green Party for Glasgow.
Correct me if I’m wrong but 48 hours-whatever happened to carrying out due diligence enquiries? Doesn’t it have to go before a cross party committee first then to debate in the full chamber.
Rushing it through in 48 hours would attract complaints of not having done a thorough in depth scrutiny or even negligence. We know WM cannot be trusted-how much more evidence of their continual lies does Scotland need. This is just another instance of them but its the people that will pay the price of any hurry-we know it’s a trap.
Take the time to do the job properly & if the deadline passes then so be it. WM should have got its act together much earlier.
If it doesn’t meet John Swinney’s requirements then reject it. Some will moan but hey what’s new with that? The union hasn’t stopped moaning for a long, long time. Let them wait.

Goes back to the days of Demon in the 90s (an ISP) who provided dial-up internet access, email addresses and free webpages (homepages) for a TAM – Tenner A Month.
If you used too much bandwidth on your website it was throttled to be slow for access until steps were taken to use less. 4800 baud would be ummm, about a thousand times slower than what we get these days.
And a PS2 was a sturdy PC from IBM going for years, but overtaken by faster models which could do like 64,000 operations a second. Unlike the slow stuff we have these days which can do millions and billions. I’ve lost track.

Maybe it is the amount of bandwidth they’re using. Their pages are appallingly slow and jerky, if you don’t hit the “red x” in time to stop them loading. If I leave a page sit there a few minutes and then exit and clear up, there’s over 100mb of gunge. They could be exceeding their server host’s quota, even in a big datacenter. They’ve got a whole raft of local papers with the same slow heavy-loading format.
Unlike Rev’s which loads in a second or two, even with a load of gravatars!

Yesindyref2 when I started in the IT business we had a 25 bit/s leased line, at one one time I managed a global network entirely on 50 bit/s leased lines apart from the one from Aberdeen to the states which went at a rocket 75 bits/s . I used Denon and then Thus as well, and Scottish Telecom before they were Thus . both ST and Demon provided great services (and hospitality 🙂 went downhill with Thus eventually

I had the great pleasure of meeting a certain Barry Sheene at Donington in 2001 and 2002, the wife and I were at the motorcycle GPs and Baz was racing in the classics.
He was my boy hood hero, and all I can say was he lived up to the expectation. A true gentleman. and for me THE GREATEST MOTORCYCLE RACER EVER.
The Daily Fail is a disgrace – they are now employing the call to national pride with regard to the EU . The same call that they attacked the Scots on in the run up to the Referendum.

Sorry, really didn’t mean to spoil your game. I’d thought it was just a joke and since it wasn’t addressed to anyone in particular and is on a public forum, and this thread was a bit bulgy and that issue had been in my mind, I commented. Sorry to spoil your fun, but it sounds like I engendered it instead, so no worries. It’s been on lots of minds since it ignited and on mine especially since Bella had tantalised with their Edinburgh omerta hint of a post but still hadn’t delivered. For instance I remembered back to the Claire Robertson thing and the creepy person who outed him/her and reading at that time one of the reasons for doing it was because Robertson was trying hamhandedly to out Spanner, but was outed instead. Was good he/she was outed given what happened but not because it protected him. Spanner protected then and now. As you say, pretty obvious.
Looking forward to Bella’s post. Seems lots of Edinburgh shibboleths are being deconstructed. The sooner the better.
