Here is the news(wire) 13

Posted on June 07, 2012 by

Particularly alert readers will already have noticed an exciting new addition to the top of our links column in the last few hours – the Wings Over Scotland NewsWire.

Lacking a fully-staffed newsroom and having to go out and get the shopping from time to time, we can’t always cover every single interesting story that appears in the media straight away, and on occasion we don’t even have the time to knock together a quick round-up post. It’s appalling slacking on our part, obviously, but until someone invents a rent-free house we need to do some actual paid work now and again too.

So instead, inspired by Peter A. Bell’s excellent Referendum 2014 news-aggregating site, we’ve come up with the distinctly similar NewsWire, which is a supremely easy-to-use linkzine that’ll fill you in on interesting stories until we’ve got the chance to dig below the surface and analyse them properly. So a respectful tip o’the hat to Mr Bell (whose own page also remains worth checking regularly, because we and he will probably find different things interesting), and that’s about the size of that.

If you're a reasonably frequent reader of WoSland, this is kinda important. Just to the right you'll see a poll. (We apologise for the fact that it's a bit ugly, and in the sidebar rather than in the body of this post – failings which are a result of the absolutely startling shitness of every single WordPress polling plugin.)

Please take five seconds to respond to it. Thanks.

BREAKING: Lockerbie bomber still alive 22

Because, y’know, it wasn’t Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who died today.

Perhaps one day we’ll know the truth, though.

Since we’ve already been nice to a journalist today, it seems only fair to also send out a little bit of love to the press corps’ less-celebrated and much-maligned brothers in arms – the photographers. (We don’t know why we’re being so pleasant to everyone all of a sudden. We think someone may have slipped something in our tea.)

Rangers FC has been in administration since Valentine’s Day. That’s three long months in which the story has featured in the news pretty much every single day, and it’s not a situation that lends itself particularly well to illustration. One picture of a Duff & Phelps press conference looks much like another, and once you’ve knocked out the traditional broken-club-crest it starts to get tricky to find a fresh visual angle.

The nation’s photo-journalists have risen heroically to the challenge, though, and we feel irresistibly compelled to take a moment out from our day to offer them a heartfelt and genuine salute, before whatever this stuff is wears off.

In case you hadn't noticed it already, in response to several requests Wings over Scotland now has an RSS feed. It's over in the right-hand sidebar, or you should be able to click these words right here to subscribe.

I especially love the line about "plunging Scotland into darkness for half the year", as if what our arbitrary human clocks say actually makes any difference to how much daylight there is.
