I think Alex is sincerely thinking better to just take the focus off the FM, as her focus is needed on Scotland.

Ruth Wishart wrote a good blog saying any other ex Leader, it would be a one day wonder, but Alex is like no other.

Ruth also said she anticipates her fellow journalists, inclined that way, will hound, until they uncover the two women.

    It so stinks.

Had these allegations about Salmond arisen from a respected, trusted and independent Scottish media source, I might have paid attention to them. But, they came from the discredited, risible and contemptible Daily Record…the self-proclaimed Voice of Scotland. They have so debased themselves, together with the BBC, as the propaganda cheerleaders of the British/Scottish Unionist establishment that anything they say can only be treated with the jeers and sneers they so richly deserve. Good luck Alex, you have the support and good wishes of the many hundreds of thousands of Scottish Independence supporters who stand right alongside you. Trial by media on behalf of the establishment. Where will it stop?

I can see the sexual misconduct angle getting used repeatedly to hound individuals into resigning if they are deemed to be a significant threat to the established order. That and whatever other dirty tricks they might utilise in their attempts to discredit prominent indy voices is a genuine cause for concern.

Whilst I can understand his reasons for resigning, I do wish the SNP had stood their ground on this one because I fear that a precedent of sorts has now been firmly set. It’s also quite frustrating that the SNP seem to be held to a higher standard than any other political party even when there is no evidence presented of any wrongdoing. Whatever happened to the presumption of innocence?

It really is a shame to see Alex hounded out like this. I hope to see him return as soon as possible to the party that he has given almost his entire adult life to having brought them from the political fringes of Scottish politics to the dominant position they now inhabit in Scotlands political landscape.

Happy to share a link, don’t think it is a secret. I haven’t donated, feels like a vanity action that will not impact the police investigation. More concerned that the Scottish government will need to spend tax payers’ money defending the judicial review that the FM signed off. The former is folks right if that is how they want to spend their money, rather than on on pro indi causes, but the latter sticks in the craw somewhat.

He stands head and shoulders above any of them. He almost singlehandedly brought the yes movement and SNP out of the wilderness where we were seen as oddballs and eccentrics, to the place where we are today, mainstream Scotland and with the goal firmly in our sights at last.

It is gratifying to see his fundraiser progress as fast as a Wings fundraiser, showing his detractors clearly that they have failed to sow the division they intended and they have failed to make any smear stick in this case, as we all know AS for his sheer integrity and trustworthiness, almost unique in the political world. It is a tricky situation. For decades few listened to such accusations and the pendulum has now swung the other way. Now if an accusation is made everything grinds to halt. Unfortunately, a number of false accusations have been made along the way but in order to protect the genuine cases everything must be investigated. The SNP or any other party cannot give senior members a mulligan on such accusations.

Given the nature of the accusations this is the best course for Alex and the Party. It leaves the door wide open for Alex to return once he has resolved this matter and it maintains the focus and direction of the Party. It is the best and most dignified course given the circumstances.

I would agree with Jason that should Alex succeed there must be consequences for those the smeared his name.

Why should anyone have spend £50,000 or more in order to prove their innocence? Allegations are exactly that, they are NOT evidence of any guilt and for that we would have to wait on the verdict in any trial which in all likelihood will never happen.

I’m really glad Alex Salmond set up a crowdfunder, sure he may have been able to afford these initial costs himself or maybe not? That’s not the point as I see it, the point is his crowdfunder will help to show the strenngth of support for him and strength of support for Independence as undoubably he is a leader of our cause.

Rest assured, Alex Salmond will make good use of any money he raises in his name and of those that support him through what must be a very stressful time.

The press are evil and those leaking the details of the allegations are even worse and I hope they are found after an investigation. This should never have happened this way. The law will need to be changed to prevent it happening in future. Everyone of us whether accuser or accused deserves anonymity until investigations are complete.

We also deserve our voice to be heard in that investigation and as far as I know Alex Salmond has yet to have been given that opportunity to have made his voice heard.

It will be heard loud and clear now. I hope the fund raiser breaks £100,000.

Why don’t they acknowledge and forcefully point out that the Permanent Secretary post is NOT a Scottish Government position but a UK Government appointed position. The Civil Service is not subordinated to the Scottish Parliament but is run from and by the Scotland Office under snack beard.
Alex Salmond was never in conflict with the Scottish Government nor his own party so why are we seeing him resign? Why are both Alex and Nicola talking about the case as if it was the Scottish Government who brought it about?
This is like they’re attitude to the BBC and the media they go along with any and all UK state spin instead of pointing out the lies and the transparent bias.

Cheers, Liz. Now I just have to convince my wife that this is a worthy cause!

Here in the USA, there are several constitutional rights that one has – rights which seem to have been trampled on of late:

    The presumption of innocence until proven guilty;

    The right, inter alia, to face one’s accusers (article VI of the Bill of Rights);

No ex post facto laws (Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution)

These are not some airy-fairy notions. They are common-sense safeguards to protect against precisely this sort of vicious attack. If those involved had gone to the police in 2013, the story would have been, at least initially, “a XX year-old man appeared in court and reporting restrictions were not lifted.” But they did not do that and now there is no chance of justice being served, whoever is in the right.

The points you raise are exactly my concerns about the way the :: real, very real :: problem of sexual harassment in the work place has been presented and handled.
It seems to me that the system to supposedly mitigate the lack of redress, is in fact a system that by its very ambiguity not only doesn’t serve the women it’s supposed to protect.
But rather has been hi jacked as a “controll” over anyone who threatens the system..
They used abused women… once again… as vehicle to right their wrongs..

We will be writing a Constution very soon, Skip and I do hope and will agitate towards… learning the lessons of History.

For the avoidance of doubt… I am referring to all the abused women whose struggle has initiated the current process, not the two Women directly involved here….. A process which I believed , then , as it developed , and now as , the Yes movement are getting to know …. Is wrong and deeply flawed , nothing about it helps anyone…
It’s introduction into the Yes movement hopefully demonstrates the glaring flaws in the process….
And we must learn from it.

I’m so proud tonight that we are all stepping up to help take this from the hand of the Media and put it into our Courts (that’s what we are Really doing)
Nicola Sturgeon is working within these peramiters… I admire her management within these peramiters … but this is one area that needs to trash the framework so that even she can do what needs to be done to stop this “abysmal behaviour “ in its tracks..

I’m afraid my contribution will have to wait until later today but it will be there. Anyway I’d just like to point out that it was always SNP policy for anyone being under investigation to resign the party whip if they were an elected to government member or if a party official to resign from the party.

It was probably never been a written rule but it has been the way it was usually been done. Remember that the SNP has a very different way of running than any other party in that it is led from the bottom up democratically. The rest are more like dictatorships with wee emperors telling the underlings what to do.

In any case when Alex was being accused of anything by other parties, or by the media and they did not follow through with an official complaint then Alex referred himself for official investigation. Now my take on such a way of doing is that only someone with a completely clear conscience would act in such a manner.

And another thing – Mr Salmond was never one to be greedy. He not only, (as did most other SNP elected members), refuse to accept pay rises when the public was suffering cuts and Mr Salmond, when sitting as both an MP & an MSP donated one salary to charity.

BTW: As the MPs and MSP were not allowed to just not take their official rises they all donated the rises to their chosen charities. Are you listening Gaefaetheblock?

Finally my best wishes to Mrs Salmond who must also be suffering greatly at this time. Our thoughts are with you Moira – the power behind the man.

I may be wrong, but it is my impression, any actual evidence there is indicates exactly the opposite is actually taking place. He was attempting to say that Alex was ultra wealthy and had several good pensions to draw upon. Now again I may be wrong but I’m almost certain that Alex donated some of his government pensions but most certainly some of his Golden Handshakes directly to Scottish charities of his choice.

The more these hateful, Scotland hating animals attack us, they stronger we become. ‘Nemo me impune lacessit’, as it says on the entrance to Edinburgh castle, with Wallace and Bruce on either side. ‘I will not be attacked with impunity.’

This all makes me even more determined to get Scottish independence ASAP.

It would appear an unelected service servant has more power and has been allied to usurp the Scottish Gov power, An unelected civil servant on a higher salary.

The question is now not just about the allegations. The question is how the Press got a hold of the ‘Statements’. The Police should be questioning Clegg. If money changed hand for information. Bribing a public official punishable with prison. Some of Murdoch’s lot were charged with corruption and hacking. They went to jail.

The comments allowed on the Herald are appalling. Deflammatory and breaking the Law. The Police should be in there. These editors/organisations need to be held to account. So, now that Alex Salmond is critical of the Scottish Govt and actually suing them, is he now a unionist etc?

Or will some Wingers finally realise that there is a big difference between supporting independence and supporting the Westminster devolution Scottish Govt?

You can support independence but be highly critical of the Westminster devolution administration at Holyrood.

And will people finally realise that the SNP politicians are just mouth pieces of Govt: they often take little involvement in day to day running of Govt and let civil servants get on with it, even when those civil servants are abusing human rights and fiddling the books etc.

When the Scot Govt are told of these complaints by the ordinary public they are ignored. It’s the same civil servants that do the abuse that then handle the complaints.

Alex Salmond went straight to legal action; he knows better than to waste his time with the Scot Govt complaint process and SPSO.

He knows that that system is designed to frustrate and fob off the general public who complain about abuses by public authorities including the Scottish Govt.

Well done to all those who have donated, including Craig Murray who pushed it over the line, and those who have now joined the SNP giving Nicola a much needed boost too. Welcome to the club, lol.

BBC’s Toodleoothenoo (went to St Andrews Uni at the same time as Alex) covered the issue fairly well but ended by saying that the Labour Party in Scotland, the Westminster lackey branch office, have stated that the crowdfunder is “dragging Scottish politics into the gutter.”

That’s the party that hid the “Scotland could be the richest country in the World McCrone Report”, handed over 6000 sq mls of Scottish seas including 7 oil fields to Westminster behind our backs, stomped Glasgow into the ground, exploited female workers for decades, shackled Scotland with billions of PFI debt, robbed pension pots of billions, dragged us into an illegal war which resulted in millions being killed, injured, displaced and generated real hatred towards the UK etc, etc, etc.

Forget about Scottish politics. The Labour Party in Scotland, at the behest of their London bosses, has attempted to drag Scotland, and therefore the Scots, into the gutter. Brass neck or what?

I’ve read that Westminster, England, politicians won’t be outed if accused of sexual harassment (no “safe place” for the accusers there, then). If so the Permanent Secretary in Scotland, Leslie Evans a regular visitor to Westminster, should have included a similar amendment when she was adding the one that included involving former politicians. Strange that she didn’t. Then again it may have been an oversight taking into account that she doesn’t seem to have the appropriate qualifications for such a prestigious job? A music degree?

I’ve also read that the Daily Rag is aware of the details of the two allegations. If so why haven’t they published both? Is the other more serious? Or less so? Whatever the case I’d imagine that every Unionist worker at Holyrood will be racking their brains trying to dredge up some story or another. Hopefully this crowdfunder / support for Alex and Alex’s strength and decency of character will act as a real deterrent.

You cannot defend yourself in ignorance of the most pertinent facts. It is an affront to natural justice. Should we proceed down that route then we are all susceptible to the same treatment at any time of their choosing.

Defend the women’s anonymity by all means, but do not deny the same to Alex, which has clearly happened in this case.

Case files like these carry enormous weight and are therefore very confidential and for authorised eyes only. Someone has given that to the media, and you have to ask why sensitive files ended up in the public domain.

Charles Stewart Parnell activities did not damage the Irish quest for Independence. There was to be a Home Rule Bill introduced in Westminster two weeks after the start of the 1WW. It would have been Law by 1916. The Irish did not have the vote. The NI unionists used the 1WW as a cover to smuggle in weapons. Capt Crawford. Illegally smuggled past Port Glasgow. Irish nationalists fought in the 1WW. Although the Irish unionists would not fight in the same divisions.

The Nationalists retaliated by smuggling weapons in. Though not on the same scale. The Irish Easter rising 1916. Ireland illegally partitioned by Lloyd George. 1923. The death of Michael Collins. Universal Suffrage 1928. The unionists denied the Catholic the vote right up to the 1960’s in Belfast. Westminster conduct in Ireland is totally illegal. Appalling behaviour.

For those hoping for a civil war inside the SNP then I fear they are going to be very disappointed. At our local branch meeting on Monday night the mood was a fighting one. This looks and feels like a political attack, not the playing out of a grievance case. When you attack an organism its defences kick in and that is what Clegg, Marra, Grant and the rest have done. They could not contain their bile and have gone for political gain against the SNP and the wider Yes movement not justice for individuals. In truth all they are ever interested in is political gain. With regards Evans, she administers the complaint process and has to play by the book. I would be extremely surprised if she was the source of the leak to the Record, who claim to have seen documents. Having dealt with grievances I can say that sometimes the complaints are genuine and upheld and sometimes they are eventually found to be false and not upheld. I hope this one falls into the latter category. However, once dealt with there is the matter of the leak and who is responsible. This has all the hallmarks of a political attack and not a very subtle one at that. Rather than MI5 I would be more inclined to look at the ranks of the opposition benches. How do we know this myopic focus of the MSM, simply because no other party has been put under the microscope so intently by them, not even the Conservatives running the UK. There are numerous parties in Scotland that have questions to answer, the MSM has shown little interest in investigating any of their issues.

The objective was pretty much delivered by a Daily Record representative on Newsnight claiming he had split the SNP, he is deluded. Followed up by Newsnight claiming Salmond had been forced to resign.

We will now all be marred with the claim of conspiracy theorists, I would say just look at the evidence. There is not one neutral commentary on this in the main MSM outlets, he is guilty, the SNP are guilty, that is the message.

In any decent society, anybody with this man’s integrity would rightly be revered and virtually untouchable.

I don’t believe for a nano-second that Alex is guilty of ANY indiscretion whatsoever, and it is an absolute disgrace that these allegations have been made public and allowed to besmirch the reputation of Scotland’s formost international statesman, when the substance and politically motivation behind these allegations seems highly suspect to say the least.

We should not mix up the term “due process” with “any process” when dredging up an excuse to be spineless do-nothings, and we should tear down any process which pronounces guilt before the accused has any opportunity to defend themselves and refute the allegations. The leak. Start with Daily Record and work back. Should be a police matter.

If the leak was done by one of the complainants then it could be straight forward case of Libel.

If the leak came from one complainant, who revealed details of the second complainant – without permission, then libel trial+ breach of data protection.

If the leak came from the Civil Service/Scottish Government – then its a clear breach of Data Protection.

Which is Criminal (not civil) Legislation. So yes, it is potentially a Police matter. In order for the Police to ascertain details from the newspaper concerned, they will need a Warrant – newspapers and their sources are (quite rightly in most cases) extremely well protected by law. But there would be nothing to stop them investigating at the Civil Service/SG end also.

It is possible the leak was carried out with a view to trying to ‘shake the tree’ a bit and see if other complainers might come forward to strengthen the case a bit. Doesn’t seem to be working out that way for them.

Really very serious for all involved.
