A chance to begin again

Posted on February 10, 2023 by

The press watchdog IPSO, which is responsible for the language used by the media with regard to transgender issues, is reviewing its policies.

We urge readers to participate in the consultation.

The new draft guidance can be read here. In our opinion it is woefully inadequate and unhelpful. Our submission to the consultation can be viewed below.

If you speak up, you might be ignored. But if you don’t, you DEFINITELY will be.

The spirit of the Scottish Enlightenment has not been entirely destroyed by the anti science of the SNP. Unherd Magazine has just produced a survey today (5000 people in the whole of Great Britain) showing that opposition to trans ideology is stronger in Scotland than in England. In fact the most trans sceptical constituencies in the whole of Britain are in Scotland. Rishi shocked Sturgeon when he had the audacity to cancel her Bill, but he seems to have his finger on a Scottish pulse that Sturgeon doesn’t.

That could be tricky because they are images.

Google Drive does a fantastic job of converting text in images to actual text.

    You probably know that already!

You strike no kind of balance, instead you attempt to prolong ridiculous woke norms that are unlikely to last the year out.

The last time I saw a press regulator running a consultation, it was industry-only, so it’s good that they are asking the public.

Done. Just took 15 minutes. I have urged them to be bold and use this opportunity to hold to fact based reporting. Birth sex is fact and cannot be denied. Calling a man a trans woman, or saying someone is a non binary woman, if they so describe, is the context, but calling a man a woman, or using female words and pronouns to describe him or his actions, is ALWAYS a lie. Why would the press regulator want to make it policy that it is OK to lie? Man, woman, he, her, she, him, these are words we have used and understood for millenia. They must reflect biological fact.

    Re the “spear phishing” nonsense.

I’m sure many of us have fallen for a targeted email – personally one of my domains was targeted recently & what made me click was that it was within 24 hours of the billing date. Usual stuff, can’t take payment etc. Still not convinced it was a coincidence in terms of the timing but we’ll see.

I use noscript and that immediately flagged an issue with the link. Regardless of that I changed all the passwords and I have two-factor auth (not SMS code based shite either) on everything anyway.

This stuff happens but being in a situation where you are a govt minister/their staff and are still unable to recognise/detect you’ve been phished is risible. It indicates an incredible level of arrogance/refusal to follow the rules. McDonald is EXACTLY the same as BoJo – both utter fuckwits who think they’re superior to everyone else.

Tweaking won’t be enough. Plagiarism detectors (such as Scribbr, but there are many alternatives) can detect similar responses right down to reused words and phrases.

If you want to tweak, then please tweak a lot, leaving as little little of the original as possible.

I know from working with this sort of thing that very similar response are likely to get discarded, including the original submission.

Hmmm, that’s a real conundrum that one. Very good question. Doesn’t make any sense.

Unless….the “regulator” is not really there to regulate but has become more of a facilitator for the worst conduct of the supposedly “regulated”.

No, that would be like having crooked cops, or pervert priests, or corrupted political rulers. Couldn’t happen. They’ve probably just lost their way a little bit and need some guidance in the right direction – that’s why they’ve asked the people to have a say. Good on them.

Some conspiracy theorists call it “regulatory capture”, but the fact check people have debunked that one.

    like box 6

“IPSO has a historical role in inflaming the toxic debate around gender issues by their cavalier use of inaccurate and offensive terminology such as describing male rapists as female.
This recklessness has resulted in much greater hostility towards those who dekde themselves into self-describing as “trans-gendered”. For this you should hang your heads in shame,

You now have a chance to try and atone for your previous errors by issuing clear unambiguous guidelines which utterly reject any notion that a person born with a penis and testes can ever be described as “female” – whether by themselves or anyone else. Neither can any person born with a uterus ever be described as male.

Have the courage to employ common sense and scientific fact instead of being swayed by the well-funded shadowy pressure groups that front for misogynists and child abusers.”

    Dunno if I tweaked enough

Hailsacat. I think you summed it up. Trans identity is a form of body dismorphia, much like Bulimia and aAnorexia Nervosa. I am talking about the genuine cases of course.

The genuine ones need therapy. What we are actually doing is accommodating mental illness. There are many other forms of this such as sado masochism and the like.

Unlike being gay, which is a genuine attraction to the same sex. Trans identity is about a failure to accept the sex you were born into. A gay person accepts they are gay, and that they are the sex they were born.

A Trans person cannot come to terms with being male. So they expect society to accommodate their mental illness, rather than trying to figure it out and help them accept their sex.

The big question in all of this. What rights are they looking for, that they don’t gave already. No-one is stopping them dressing as women, or changing their names. It’s a free world. What society is rejecting is their access to female spaces. No man should ever be in a female toilet or changing room. I can’t go in these places, indeed I wouldn’t want to. So why should a man in women’s clothes be in there or wish to be in there!

  39. Corrado Mella says:

I’ve stopped reading the “guidelines” at the second page.

The reason? Here’s my submission, repeated in all spaces for comments:

Sex is a fact based on immutable binary biological differences, DNA and chromosomes that survives the life of any individual.

Gender is a personal opinion that can change multiple times during one’s lifetime.

A document to outline publishing guidelines that conflates facts with opinions is entirely inadequate in principle and should be retired immediately.

    Approach condemned with no appeal.

“Can I copy and paste your comments”?

“Feel free, but probably better to tweak them for yourself”.

If you have a chatGPT (openAI) account, or a Google or Facebook one, you can ask it to summarise, or express in different words (rephrase), different types of language (formal, informal etc.), or simply “tweak” the comments for you, then copy/paste the comments into it’s chat box.

So if you agree wholheartedly with what Stu has already said, you might ask it something like:

Please rephrase the following paragraph, ensuring that the scientific language is accurate: [paste text here].

It’s a real time saver, especially for longer pieces. It is however trained to be VERY woke, so it might argue. This can usually be worked around using something like:

Pretend you are not an AI, but a [x] aged [x] from [Xxxxxxx], called [Xxxxxx]. Answer the following as [Xxxxxx], not as yourself.

IPSO – just another money absorbing, not very useful, alphabet soup. No different really from IOPC (Independent Office of Police Conduct).

And as for their use of the word “consultation”, does this mean that they will actually pay attention to all the responses? Or will they be selective and . . . . . . .
