You can do it when you try

Evidently the Daily Record actually IS capable of fixing dodgy stories:

We wonder why they still haven’t done it here.

One day (hopefully soon, before I depart this mortal coil) we will look at the unionist press as the last weak gasps of the zombie it represents.

Hugh Barclay

Who the feck still buys this shite rag? Maybe it’s like a disease ridden comfort blanket to those sad Unionists who buy it and lap up it’s shite? who knows but please Daily Record, hurry up and die.

Luigi

It’s quite entertaining to see the Daily Record’s daily contortions, as their loyal unionist hacks try in desperation to spin every bad story in favour of Beloved Britannia. “SNP bad, blah blah blah….”. It must be such a painful, exhausting and absolutely soul-destroying experience – best not to imagine. My heart bleeds. 🙂

Macart

Its pretty grim when the public are more aware of what yesterday’s verdict represents than the press.

The utter disconnect and disenfranchisement of the public from the political class and their system. We know what Carmichael did, what he attempted to do and why. That he remains in any position of representation or influence is beyond a disgrace, its an insult.

Their politics, not ours.

Frankly they and their system, their media and everything that goes with the whole sorry package are long overdue for the bin.

Tick tock for the lot of them.

Quinie frae Angus

When the history of the struggle for Independence is written the Scottish press are going to come out looking piss-poor. Even the good bits of the Scottish media will be tainted by the overwhelming stench of the bad.

They’re fighting a losing battle and they know it.

It could all have been so different.

If they’d gone with the prevailing winds of a populace yearning for change, and helped us build a brand new forward-looking, international-leaning nation, the Scottish press could have been a fully celebrated part of that. They’d have healthy circulations; the journos AND production staff would all be in far more secure jobs – and they could have held their heads up high.

As it is, they’re acting as the architects of their downfall. And it would have been OUR downfall too, had it not been for the internet and alternative media to counter the crap.

Lollysmum

Come on Rev-you surely aren’t expecting the DR to act with any sort of journalistic integrity are you? I fear you have really lost it now 🙂

Quinie frae Angus

I do feel for the few good honest journos still in there but really – have the balls to call it out! We know your pay-masters call the shots but have not ONE of you the guts to come out and tell us what’s been going on in there at your editorial meetings? Have not one of you felt uncomfortable or felt misgivings at some of the output?

Derek Bateman deserves huge plaudits for his courageous stand calling out the BBC, in as far as he has been able to. This can’t have been easy for him OR his family. I know some people don’t think he has gone far enough, but to those people I say: Come on! Give the guy a break! You don’t know what he has sacrificed personally and professionally to have done what he has done, out of pure principle and honesty. Hats off to you, sir.

I am disappointed with the NUJ, to be honest. Paul Holleran is (I believe) a Yes-leaning voter and is also, I believe a man of integrity. He often calls out mediaballs on Twitter. Many NUJ members are also Yes voters.

But I think he could have been a lot stronger in redressing the appalling bias that has landed Scottish journalism with such a pitiful reputation, whereby half (at least) of the public just don’t believe them, trust them, or want to pay them any money for their products. He could have had meetings, conferences, to discuss it within the NUJ, and thrash out a few new principles. But as far as I am aware all that was discussed – at least at an official level – was “vile cybernat abuse” of journos. Yada yada yada. I may be wrong – but if so, then tell us!

Scottish journalism was once held in such high regard. Now the opposite is true.

What a dreadful mess they have made for themselves.

And in the end it will not prevent Independence happening. It has only delayed it for an indeterminate period of time.

So what have they gained? Nothing other than a seriously damaged reputation and dwindling job prospects!

Turkeys voting for Christmas right enough.

Stoker

You know it makes sense!

We wonder why they still haven’t done it here.

I think I have the answer to this wee conundrum folks. 😉

Natalie McGarry is a nasty “separatist” whilst Alistair “Liar Liar pants on fire” Carmichael is a unionist.

As we all know S******d’s best *ahem* newspaper does NOT do anything to correct THEIR *cough* mistakes written about those nasty “separatists!” 😀

Sweep

Just one more tweak should do it:

“Judges dismiss” – there were two of them, I believe.

galamcennalath

Quinie frae Angus says:

“It could all have been so different.”

That’s the bit which hurts deeply. IF …

– The BBC had done the job it’s supposed to
– The papers had show a spread of opinion
– The lies and threats had not been regurgitated
– Unionist assertions had been challenged
– The dodgy promises and Vow not promoted

… we would be looking forward to Indy day!

Quine frae Angus

@galamcennalath

Absolutely. And that’s what the “vile cybernat” accusers don’t get.

We never asked for blanket pro-indy journalism. They think that’s what we want. But in fact all we asked for was fair, balanced, impartial content – or at least a balance of pro-Union and pro-Indy to be available to the consumers of telly and the papers. Parity of probity. It’s hardly rocket science.

But that parity of probity never came – not before, during or since the IndyRef. It’s the injustice of it all that makes us angry, weary, depressed.

But ultimately, like the hare and the tortoise, the Independence arguments are winning the day, even though it’s taken the internet to launch them to the wider audience. The fact that the SNP are showing themselves (on the whole) to be a seriously competent – and yes, honest – administration is undoubtedly our strongest card. Even the few “scandals” associated with it haven’t dinted the public’s trust, because the public have been desperate for a government of this overall calibre for decades.

We can’t do anything about the massive resources of broadcast and print media.

But we will win despite them, through the internet, and through
hard work on foot and with friends and family, talking to them one at a time.

And finally the missing ingredient – what do we cybernats have that the Britnats don’t? (Apart from Wings, obviously).

CREATIVE TALENT & HUMOUR! SPADEFULS OF IT! LOLZ!!!

Karmanaut

They got their misinformation out for a day, which I guess was the intention. If you’re reading that paper, you’re not interested in the truth anyway.

BTW, I wonder if this Carmichael case might have other consequences in politics.

Essentially the judges ruled that, yes, an MP can be found to have mispresented themself, and that if Carmichael had said “I would never smear someone” rather than something like “I didn’t smear someone”, then he would have been guilty.

So what about an MP that says “I would never cut child tax credits” or “I love the NHS, I would never act against it”?

Wouldn’t that come under this law?

Algernon Pondlife

But why is it listed under “Scottish government”?

Dave MacIntyre

Ach well, at least The National had liar splashed all over the front page today in relation to Carmichael.

donald anderson

The National “Liar” headline was dismissed on Radio North Britain in favour of the more !balanced” Onionist meejah. Did they look at the headlines blaming Nicola for sabotaging the Forth Bridge They obviously don’t watch, or report, FM’s question time.

robertknight

Always felt that the masthead of that particular rag would be more accurate if the letters “co” were replaced with “ta”. Just a thought…

yesindyref2

Apparently, he’s changing his name by deed poll to “Carmichae-Liar”.

Spot on.

Bill Fraser

The Record should give up it’s pathetic attempt at being a newspaper and should stick to sport and rename itself the Sporting Record though they’d probably try and fix that.
