Wings Over Scotland

The millionaire Paul Daniels

Posted on March 30, 2013 by

There’s an isolated outbreak of proper journalism in the Herald today. A story by actual reporter Gerry Braiden (who must be relieved to have it offsetting a ridiculous puff piece about a 1p cut in beer duty prompting a crazed drinking bonanza in Scottish pubs over the Easter break) reveals that the head of Scotland’s largest police authority has been accused of the repeated harassment of a married woman.

“Phil Braat, chairman of the Strathclyde Police Authority, is the subject of complaints made to the force by a woman employee of a Glasgow City Council-related company last December.

The Herald understands that, despite the complaint being made almost four months ago, Mr Braat, a Labour councillor in Glasgow and a solicitor, has not been interviewed by the police regarding the accusations.”

In an attempt to get to the bottom of this perplexing mystery, we’ve added some emphasis to the quote above. For some reason we can’t seem to get a celebrated segment of an old TV chat show out of our minds.

    I might have been tempted to highlight “chairman of the Strathclyde Police Authority” as more relevant. I might have been, if there were no other Labour councillors in Glasgow getting away with criminal acts. But it seems to be a perk of the job, these days.

    The link works, but I don’t get it. Debbie Mcgee is asked by Mrs Merton: “So what attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?” What has that to do with the Strathclyde Police dragging their feet over an allegation against their ?boss? in the council?

    By saying Paul Daniels is a millionaire she is hinting at the reason Debbie married him  – so by calling Mr Braat a Glasgow Labour Councillor the journalist is perhaps  hinting at why he has not yet been interviewed by police.

    @Ghengis.
    I may be wrong, but i assume the Rev is alluding to why it might be obvious that a Labour politico isn’t being investigated by the police in Glasgow?
    As in it’s obvious what attracted Debbie to the millionaire Paul Daniels.

    Glasgow Labour hierarchy’s cosy relationship with Glasgow ‘finest’ is a mystery wrapped up in an enigma:
    Apparently you can consort with known criminals and drug dealers, partake of  banned dangerous substances, have an 18 year old ‘friend’ drop dead close to your vicinity, all whilst governing Scotland’s biggest city, yet there is nothing to be investigated. Further, you host a riotous party in your Merchant City flat, after fleeing from said responsible post, all paid for whilst apparently unemployed, and are taken in for questioning by the constabulary…then are released without charge, but given a police car home away from prying papparazzi eyes. Then your successor is surprised, by a member of the public, having an ‘affair’ i.e. public sex in a car park with a recent paramour (ten minutes),who squanders £100,00 -£200,000 on a sham consultation to alter George Square and then ignores recommendations, cuts pensioners’ meals by a third and treble the costs to said OAPs, and closes disabled clubs in the poorest parts of the city, denying any assistance to the local groups organising resistance against the Bedroom Tax.
    Never mind the history of an ex First Minister’s wife’s constant support of a criminal dynasty’s stealing of public funds from a Community project year after year backed up by violent intimidation.  Question: So who guards the guardians? Is there no way that the SG can encourage the new National Police force to investigate this rotten borough? Or is the new boss of this force too close to the source?

    I would be wary of this one. Don’t know the facts behind the allegation – neither does Braat apparently – but I do know he is pretty well respected by councillors of all parties.  The fact that the Labour Group AGM is coming up this week may not be unrelated to the fact that this story has appeared at this time. Gerry Braiden has commented on the timing himself.
