Wings Over Scotland

Quoted for truth #7

Posted on February 13, 2013 by

Never let it be said that Wings Over Scotland isn’t the sort of fair-minded site that would acknowledge when the Scottish press prints some reasonable and balanced commentary once in a while:

“The last time I wrote about the tone of the debate on Scottish independence, I came to the conclusion that there was little to choose between the two sides in the quality of the arguments and the calm or intelligence with which they were presented.

Since then, there has been something of an improvement on the nationalist side, perhaps through entrusting the presentation to Nicola Sturgeon rather than to other politicians I could name. But there has been an appalling deterioration on the unionist side.”

Here’s another quoted for truth, from Ian McWhirter on his blog:

“The problem is partly the sheer weight of the forces against them.  Better Together have the UK Government, the three unionist parties in Westminster and Scotland, the UK Treasury and civil service and the Scottish and UK press on their side, plus fellow travellers like Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission. The Nationalists have Alex Salmond and a few loose cannons.”

Wow, I just left a comment praising the fact that FINALLY someone in the media was articulating the fact that the accession process is just a case of ensuring potential member states comply with the acquis communautaire, and I’ve been put under review before it can be published.

This is because I left a comment on Brian Wilson’s last article which they deemed unacceptable. Which it wasn’t, because I know better than to post stuff that’s likely to get you banned from Scotsman and Herald comments.

On the separation issue, Cathy Jamieson has just used the term in a question during Scottish Q’s.

So does it only apply to the framing of a debate?

Can you imagine the outcry if an mp were censured for uttering a particular word??

Yet, in other news: NNS reports a BBC apparatchik telling a licence holder that the BBC has no duty to be impartial with respect to the independence referendum since the official campaign period has not yet started.

The viewer’s complaint concerned a Brian Taylor hosted program (The Big Debate perhaps?) in which the only Nationalist on the panel was opposed by three Unionist comprising  its remaineder.

    These guys are beyond shameless.
