Is Utilitarianism Risky? How the Same Antecedents and Mechanism Produce Both Utilitarian and Risky Choices

Philosophers and psychologists have long been interested in identifying factors that influence moral judgment. In the current analysis, we compare the literatures on moral psychology and decision making under uncertainty to propose that utilitarian choices are driven by the same forces that lead to risky choices. Spanning from neurocognitive to hormonal to interpersonal levels of analysis, we identify six antecedents that increase both utilitarian and risky choices (ventromedial prefrontal cortex brain lesions, psychopathology, testosterone, incidental positive affect, power, and social connection) and one antecedent that reduces these choices (serotonin activity). We identify the regulation of negative affect as a common mechanism through which the effects of each antecedent on utilitarian and risky choices are explained. By demonstrating that the same forces and the same underlying mechanism that produce risky choices also promote utilitarian choices, we offer a deeper understanding of how basic psychological systems underlie moral judgment.

THEY ARE IRRELEVANT the party borne of Kier Hardie do’nt see the modern new labour as anything but tory lite and as such ("Tractor" - Ed)s to the cause, they should now withdraw from Scotland, reform and present the new Scottish Nation with a modern franchise of policies for a new and aspirational nation, then and only then maybe the newly politically aware Scottish electorate will give them another chance.

Thought you might like a read of the reply from Farron regarding this fool.

Thank you for your email regarding the news that the office of Alistair
Carmichael, MP, leaked inaccurate information about a meeting held
between Nicola Sturgeon and the French Ambassador. I am sorry it has
taken a while to respond, but I wanted to be sure of my facts before
    replying

The leaked document was not ‘an entirely fictitious account’, but a
memo drafted by a civil servant in the Scotland Office.

The Cabinet Secretary instigated an investigation into the leak which
has now ended. The inquiry concluded:
The investigation team interviewed the civil servant in the Scotland
Office who produced the memo. He confirmed under questioning that he
believed that the memo was an accurate record of the conversation that
took place between him and the French Consul General, and highlighted
that the memo had stated that part of the conversation between the
French Ambassador and the First Minister might well have been “lost in
    translation”.
Senior officials who have worked with him say that he is reliable and
has no history of inaccurate reporting, impropriety or security lapses.
The Cabinet Secretary has concluded that there is no reason to doubt
that he recorded accurately what he thought he had heard. There is no
evidence of any political motivation or ‘dirty tricks’.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is currently
undertaking an investigation into the matter, and it would therefore be
inappropriate for me to make any further comments at this time.

To be honest I am really pleased with the rumor in the press today that David Cameron is being persuaded to stay for another term. That means 10yrs of Cameron and at least 15yrs of the Tories. At least for England it does. Perhaps Scots might not think that is such a good idea? Considering he, Cameron, has been shooting policy from the hip and getting roundly trounced by the SNP on every occasion I would hope Scotland would want a different future.

The government and elite are only one step from appearing on TV while twirling their moustaches and cackling about all their evil deeds and what they can get away with. Yet the public still sit around, voting the same, never lifting their head out of the mainstream media blur. As long as they keep on the path of “boiling the frog” they can eventually get the collars on and the whips out and people will still think it’s freedom and the best things can be.

It didn’t take evil geniuses to take over everything and manipulate the masses into serfdom. It only took people of average intelligence who paid attention to reality instead of drowing themselves in distractions and spin. This only makes it even more sad. The same people ruling over us would struggle to get a job in a local council office if you stripped them of their background.
