Tough love
We can’t really avoid mentioning the big list of “celebrities” for No assembled today by the cuddly, fluffy, funded-by-Tory-donor-oil-tycoon-linked-to-genocidal-murderers “Let’s Stay Together” campaign to lovebomb Scottish voters, summed up perfectly by an alert reader on Twitter as “a veritable Who’s That? of the British establishment”.
One of the people we HAD heard of on the list was the, er, noted historian Dr David Starkey. Dr Starkey was keen to lend his name to the letter telling Scots that “we want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you”.
He didn’t always feel quite so warmly towards Scotland, though.
More recently, of course, the good Doctor also called the First Minister democratically elected twice by the people of Scotland a “Caledonian Hitler” who “sees the English everywhere, like the Jews”.
But he likes us now, which is the important thing.
Has he a book to promoote?
Fuck Starkey.
@Bugger
Watch it lad! Some people are coming down heavy on swear words on here (not sure why because loads of people swear in real life).
Have we found out who Conn Iggledun is yet?
Good call.
But who would he look down on if Scotland left? Foreigners are obviously inferior anyway, as BT keep telling us, so it just wouldn’t be the same 🙁
@nelliejean
Anybody outside the M25?
At least The Pope was misquoted.
Whats next, the shy retiring Leader of Welsh Parliament saying “They Scots deserve a better deal, so say all of us!”
Yeah, David Starkey.
No, I better not.
Its not past the watershed.
When Kelvin McKenzie comes on board that should swing it for NO.
“The infrastructure of Scotland exists solely on the handouts of the clever English generating wealth in London and the South East…”
Starkey hasn’t a clue about Scotland. All Starkey cares about is Starkey. Tenth-rate historian.
Amazing what some people will do for £25!
If that’s what he says out loud about Scotland I wonder what he really thinks?
From the Daily Mash. Says it all really.
SCOTLAND has welcomed a letter urging the country to reject independence, signed by a collection of fancy English celebrities.
The letter was signed by Dame Judy Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, Simon Callow and 200 other absolutely spiffing famous people who probably have really nice old houses, covered in ivy.
Bill McKay, from Bathgate, said: “I imagine Judy, Helena and Simon all got round a big farmhouse-style kitchen table in Hampstead.
“And Judy said ‘I’ll get Tracey Emin, Melvyn Bragg and Richard Dawkins’, and Helena was like, ‘I’ll get Emma Freud, Richard Curtis and Ben Fogle’ and Simon was like ‘I’ll get Cilla Black, Ray Winstone and Gloria Hunniford – you know, for the Glaswegians’.
“And then they wrote a lovely letter about how lovely everybody is and that we must come for tea, just like that poor bloke in Howard’s End who gets killed by the bookcase.
“Fuck off.”
But he should be able to place the quote from Cromwell Darling based his “Contemplate for one minute that you might be wrong,” thing from.
link to cyberussr.com has it in all it’s glory with a claim that it’s an answer from the English Army to the Scots Kirk.
I’m voting No because Mick Jagger is.
Starkey came to grief when he told David Dimbleby he earned too much. What he said about Scotland was fair game in Dimbleby’s eyes it seems.
As a historian,Dr Starkey might do well to actually understand the part played in the world by us poor feeble Scots, but then again maybe he was having a bad day driving on the road surfaces we invented,or,had inhaled some chloriform by accident,or maybe the antibiotics had’nt kicked in yet to cure an STI which had infected his brain
Ta-Da! Is the penny on the way down yet Dr Racist, i mean Starkey!
Sorry but wholly off topic but i just want to get this off my chest…
About this no swearing and being seen to be all saintly and as pure as the driven snow shite, i say its now too close to the referendum for all that crap now. We should be telling it like it is from here on in and not be intimidated into acting like the good christian anymore. The fact is anyone voting No (thats basically bigots, tories and the trash with cash aspiring middle class bampots that think because they have clawed their way up to living in a new build and being able to afford 2 holidays a year then everything is jst dandy in this here union brigade) are not going to change their minds now. Most people are now pretty much decided on their voting intentions and despite the much publicised and wholly inaccurate official polls, i think Yes are going to romp it so what does it matter now?
Is thon Starkey chiel not the Holocaust Denier or was enmeshed in a stushie about same (I could be wrong)?
Starkey and Sewell have both made it clear how they feel about us, and no wonder they feel the way the do. We’re not just Johnny Foreigner, we’re Johnny Foreigner that lay down and died at the Act of Union, and they’ve been walking all over us ever since, and their contempt has grown deeper and deeper. It’s racism actually. They couldn’t get away with saying those things about any other group of people.
Strarkey’s a poor wee man.
Lots of Sirs and Lords, but no Katie Hopkins so I’m not persuaded to vote no yet. But Ronnie Corbett, William Dalrymple; who is Betty Jackson?
It’s like a list of BBC c’lebs from Who Do You Think You Are, padded with nonentities you’ve never heard of before, or after.
Still thanks for the letter chaps, I’ve thought long and hard about it, a damn sight longer than you lot anyway, and guess what – I’m still a Yes.
@Rosa Alba Macdonald
I think you are thinking of David Irving, rather than David Starkey, Rosa.
And the self-congratulatory mode of STV on its debate goes on.
What were we like said the presenters? What was I like said Bernard Ponsonby?
Pure dead brilliant!
I honestly think we will never here the end of it.
Macart says:
Yeah, David Starkey.
No, I better not.
Its not past the watershed.
If I might be permitted to borrow a line or three from a *ahem* certain film here Macart. 😉
HOLD!
HOLD!
Awe f**k it … see you in the “Darkened Room” in five minutes! 😀
Awe dear, dear DOCTOR David Starkey. Here wait a minute I’ve got this pain in my side Doc, do you think you can have a look at it and see what is causing me all this pain? 😛
Misogynist, racist, disablist Rod Liddle who made a joke about not being able to smoke when visiting Auschwitz wants us to vote no.
ps
Here’s what Rod thinks of Scots –
Rod Liddle: Scots are alcoholics & druggies

I had a look at the list and it isnt even 200 names, Neil Stuke appears twice (once under N and once under S). Also I cant find who Peter Reed is other than Pete Reed the rower, so this may be a duplicate. I didnt look that closely so there may be more “errors”.
It’s funny how certain well known historians (Starkey, Snow, Oliver etc) love talking about the past, but momentous, historic events unfolding in front of their eyes seem to unsettle them.
I would have thought that the Scottish referendum on September 2014 would be a fascinating event for any historian, but it seems that to some, it is way out of their comfort bubble and something they do not think should be happening at all.
Rather than enjoy watching an exciting, unpredictable history in the making, they would rather it was all under control, all wrapped up in cotton wool, or wrapped up in the union flag?
“Is thon Starkey chiel not the Holocaust Denier or was enmeshed in a stushie about same (I could be wrong)?”
No. Starkey is “the whites have become black” guy.

But he’s quite happy to give $4.5 billion a year to America’s friends who blockade Gaza.
Ah that Starkey who said….
My sense in politics is that successful women are at least as brutal and nasty as the successful men, and Margaret Thatcher’s an outstanding example.
If youre gonna put his mug up be sure of one thing..
Big supplies of Analgesic!
Dear All,
Why? You didn’t say.
Yours aye,
I remember another piece of literature like this, there was just one difference, people cared about this one:

The best thing is that, if Starkey was honest, he’d know that one of the main themes of the entire English colonial project at its outset was built on telling other people they had to adopt ‘English apparell and habittes’, which were inherently ‘civilised’ while the others were ‘barbarous’. No English dress, indeed!
I have read the list of celebrities who have signed the letter asking the Scots not to leave the UK.
Well my reply is this – thank you for signing the letter but unfortunately it makes no difference to what Scots people think
PLEASE MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Another great reason for voting yes.

Ah’m no gonna read it.
“Fuck Starkey.”
Dinna fancy him ava.
David Starkey is a mediocre waste of oxygen that’s a shameless media whore (and a nasty, spiteful ‘personality’ too). Just like almost everyone else on that list is a waste of oxygen too (minus the awful personality/psychological issues of Starkey).
Scotland are we ready for a new dark age in which we won’t have access to the broadcasting genius that is Ben Fogle?
Love the vibe of both the video and letter that indicated it is a choice that is ‘absolutely yours alone’ and then tries to subvert precisely that notion in a pathetically maladroit passive-aggressive manner.
Scots need to think long and hard over this historic letter before we vote to cut ourselves off from the endless talents of Bruce Forsyth.
And how can you possibly turn your back on the wonders of Kirstie Allsopp, Sarah Beeney, Rob Brydon, Gloria Hunniford, Cliff Richard, Alan Titchmarsh and a galaxy of similar stars?
How can Scottish cultural and intellectual life survive if such titans as Melvyn Bragg and David Starkey (along with June Sarpong) decide to ignore we ungrateful Scots?
Plus Eddie Izzard will be mildly upset if we vote Yes! for all of 5 pico-seconds. How can we Scots be so hurtful to such nice, caring, well-informed people that only have our welfare and best interests at heart?
Personally I’d love to be shot of all of the people on this idiotic letter. Ideally in my worst/best mood with the traditional Leninist method for dispatching such numpties – that’s joke btw – honest 😉
That will be Dan Snow, married to Lady Edwina Grosvenor, the second daughter of the 6th Duke of Westminster.
From Wikipedia:
“According to the “Sunday Times Rich List 2014,” the Duke of Westminster is worth £8.5 billion, placing him tenth in the list and making him the third richest British citizen after British-Indians David and Simon Reuben, and richest member of the peerage, with a wealth significantly greater than Queen Elizabeth.
He was educated at Harrow School and RMA Sandhurst. In 2005, he was elected Chancellor of the University of Chester.
Via Grosvenor Estates, the Duke is the richest property developer in the United Kingdom and one of the country’s largest landowners, with vast estates in Oxford, Cheshire and Scotland, as well as large areas of Mayfair and Belgravia in central London, and also elsewhere in Europe.”
Dan says, “What unites us is much greater than what divides us. Let’s stay together.”…
… ROFLMAO! Couldnae fucking make it up, etc.
Naw, Dan, let’s turn your lovely wee sentence around for the truth, shall we… ‘What divides us is much greater than what unites us. Let’s separate.”
He’s a horrid little man. Doc Starkey and Doc Schama seem to have one aim in life, wipe Scotland from the history books and how’s that worked out for them.
In a few weeks time, Scotland might be having a wee word with teamGB history.
David Starkey is so far up the Establishment’s a*** he can see Dan Snow’s legs!
Soda: “trash with cash aspiring middle class bampots that think because they have clawed their way up to living in a new build and being able to afford 2 holidays a year then everything is jst dandy in this here union brigade”

Richard Madeley and Katie Hopkins told us what English celebs really think of Scotland on the Wright Stuff.

Well he is right there I have to admit it. 😀
THEY start all the wars, including the ILLEGAL ones, and send OUR boys and girls in to do the dirty fighting stuff whilst THEY sit back and sing “Oh what a lovely war!”
We all know WHY they want us to stick with them. THEY need us to do THEIR fighting for them. If, sorry WHEN, we go they will have to do all their dirty fighting on their own. We can’t have that now, can we? 😉 😛

I await Jimmy Nail, Allan Shearer, a handful of retired northern comedians, The Blackpool Revue girls and a Yorkshire Terriers paw print to give us a Northern please stay perspective
I’ve updated my list of the ‘Top 10 Most Annoying People’ from the Let’s Stay Together campaign. (I missed out Starkey first time round.)
1. Rod Liddle (nc)
2. David Aaronovitch (nc)
3. Nick Cohen (nc)
4. George Galloway (+1)
5. Richard Dawkins (-1)
6. David Starkey (new entry)
7. Alain de Botton (-1)

Coming out in support for a NO vote can have it’s rewards, just ask John Barrowman and Tunnocks.
“You come out in support of the NO campaign and you’re in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.”
“Where’s do I sign.”
In fairness Robert I’m sure I have heard the (in)famous Kelvin MacKenzie say in the past that Scotland should go it alone. Of course he then does go on to have a rant about us being scroungers etc. 😀
Prefer Feargal Sharkey’s work….at least he had “A Good Heart”…..

Re the sweary stuff, I recall the last time this was extensively discussed and Morag was taking big licks for denouncing it. I supported her and made the point that the best way to sway Don’t Knows was calm, polite, non aggressive setting out of the Yes case without ad hominem attacks.
Stuart’s response was,
“Very much THIS”.
I’ve never come across ‘Soda’ before (4:29 pm) who wants us to curse and swear as much as we like, but he or she sounds like a false flagger.
Politeness costs nothing.
I’ll get my coat now.
Starkey’s such an utter mental establishment type that you could almost like him. He’s like a caricature. He’s also deeply jealous of the Scots.

Cliff Richard spend most of his time in Barbados.
What about Hutch? Is he a naw an’ a’?
It’s not Scotland they want to keep in the union, it’s what they see as the last of the British Empire that they want to keep together.
What ever happened to the “It is all for the Scottish People to decide” and then they spoil it by interfering. Can I join with others and say Shut up and leave us alone. After all we know exactly what you actually all think, you see we have the internet.
The only celeb who could persuade me would be if Christina Hendricks offered me the hot sexy time to vote no.
Even then I think I would just take the hot sexy time then vote yes anyway.
Say no to drugs might be appropriate to some of that mob.
Impressive disciple folks. That is us over 60 comments and nobody has gone off on one yet. What a dispicable bunch you are. 🙂
The list really blows to bits the dreary nonsense of “Better Together” and “our UK family”. A bunch of verified Scot haters, Tories and establishment figures from Planet London.
I’m working on going off on one Cameron, just give me time! 😛
@Helena Brown
Oh hell, they haven’t stuck to that promise from day one. Just this past week we’ve had HMG sending us their wee leaflet and taking out full page ads even in local titles. Then of course today we’ve got their lurve in letter and a bunch of American politicos who, without any prompting at all, have decided to stick their oar in.
I mean they really do think we’re that stupid and or in awe of celebrity.
Come to think about it Cameron I think Macart might be nearer going off on one than me going by his last post. Thankfully he is now ‘installed’ in the “Darkened Room” so he should begin to calm down now. 😀
Caledonian Hitler’s quite catchy, and that’s Hampton court palace this royal arse licker in chief’s looking very regal in.
I think it’s Prince Charles private palace but it’s always a shock to see how sharing citizenship with England means scrambling about on the royals private shire called the UK. The royals own so much of it all but it’s nice to visit. Windsor park is bigger than London almost, you canf get into Windsor but the cops outside are a good craque. Buckingham palace has the queens art collection that’s bigger than anything any public gallery owns. Wills and Kate got Kensington palace and spent a fortune renovating it with their benefits:D
One top tip if you’re a biker, the Deeside roads to and from Balmoral palace are smooth as glass, to protect the royal bums getting jiggled but they’re only there a couple of months a year or so, after that it’s a bikers treat.

Indeed Mac, they certainly haven’t and I remember David Cameron also said he would respect us, then he was really rude. I notice my namesake is on the list, I wish it to be known I was Helena well before she was, and I am Scots.
RE: the odd sweary word etc,
I am very much a Yes voter and have been all my adult life, i’m 42 btw and male. I have been on here infrequently for sometime and i can assure all or any one concerned i am most definitely not a false flagger.
I can converse in a polite and mature way and do not have to revert or resort to foul language to get my point across but i stick by my original comment, in essence, and very much hope i havnt caused to much offence by making my case. 🙂
Is he not with Hutch any more then?
Starkey is a dinosaur, now that’s historical… or is that histerical… there is a book for him in there somewhere.
Well, frankly I’m disappointed in some of these people. My favourite off the list, though, has to be Mike Batt. I now cannot shake off the mental image of a giant, No-voting womble.
I’m amazed my Slovene girlfriend’s not on that list of 200 Scotland botherers and where oh where is this berk http://www.adamtomkins.net

Training Day, Conn Iggulden writer born 1971 to an English Father and Irish Mother, so he will truly love you.Writes Historical Fiction so good to onboard, the English keep telling us our history is fiction aka that wee man Starkey and I am not ashamed to say he is a wee man I am only four feet ten inches myself.
1st Queen of England by the look of him..
Nana Smith
I don’t Facebook, but this would have been my comment.
Could the authors of this letter not have done a bit of research before penning their thoughts? Britain is not a country, it is a unitary state created by the parliaments of Scotland and England, centuries before Britain became a ‘democracy’.
More British nationalism from and for the ignorant.
Starkey is a sneering, sanctimonious, hypocritical little hyena. And his TV ‘history’ programs are dire. After 30 seconds, the sound of that voice makes your ears bleed.
He is also a dyed in the wool, right wing Britnat. The concept of Scotland as a nation & the right of its people to elect their own government simply doesn’t enter his thought process. Why? Because we are a “province” (his word) of Mother England.
I never knew that so many people, including these pseudo-celebs, “loved” us so much. If it’s a No result, do you think any of them will remotely care what happens to the Jocks in the future?
Soda
Flup off. 🙂
Think you’re getting a wee bit confused there heedtracker. Patrick Stewart’s character was Captain Piccard not Captain Kirk. 😉
Ben Fogle’s in there, last time he was here was tweeting about how he wasn’t going to be foreign in his own country. Fair enough I suppose. Must be hell for all those don’t want Scotland to be a foreign country types, when they actually leave England’s shores to go anywhere.
I fully agree with “bugger” in post #1
Starkey can go forth and fornicate….on his own !
What an objectionable little man.
Oh gawd! Not the camp Starkey?!
I prefer my camp theatrical, on stage, in a Restoration comedy, not in my academics.
Nobody but a stupid dog could like the guy. I have this revolting vision of him taking an animated powder puff of a toy dog to bed each night, a pocket rat to reassure him he’s a wonderful guy ten times a day.
Barf!
Oh no! I’ve just had a wee, erm what do you call it 😉 , thought! I’m sure after the last Question Time from Inverness the *ahem* chairman, a certain Dimblebum fellow, said they would be off the air until the week before the referendum, I think, when they would be back in Scotland. 😉
Now, seeing as the BBC is, as they themselves claim, neutral in the referendum debate I wonder how many *cough* panelists will be individuals from the famous 200! 😛
When you have to get a bunch of foreigners to tell us were to wee, stupid & poor then we really don’t deserve any respect, we deserve to be treated as thick, while grovelling about trying to survive on the scraps thrown from the big foreign table. The scraps we are fighting over is the remains of our dinner which these snobs have just stuffed themselves with. After which they retire to the “drawing room” to divi. Up our money for their own private use.
These people are PARASITES living off the efforts of other people and they believe they are entitled to this because they are superior beings, and we are just the brainless peasants. Unfortunately if we vote no then we have proved beyond any doubt that they are totally correct and We deserve to be treated like their village idiots.
Proud Scot, if it is a no I will be contacting the Irish embassy to become a citizen of the republic which I am entitled to be and obtain a Erin passport. I will let the loyal peasants lick the boots of their foreign masters and be used and abused as their wealthy masters dictate.
Is that the same Cilla Black that threatened to leave the yookay if Tory Bliar and his new labour party got in..then she remembered they were really tories after all so its best to stay after all! So i guess its ‘tara chuck tara’ from us when Scotland votes yes.
Just watched FMQ. Alex Salmond was brilliant and the script becomes ever clearer.
It’s our pound and we’re keeping it, the alternatives are on page 110 of the White Paper,it is in Scotland’s interest and England’s interest to keep it and they can’t stop us using it anyway.
That line is already insinuating it’s way into the minds of interested and informed people and will win out.
Better Together has stepped into the trap they made for YES.
Something strange has happened since the beginning of this week. We’ve never had so many people in looking for badges and stickers and signing the declaration. And we have never had so many women that we never met before in offering help.
First impressions are not necessarily the most telling.
I guess when something you love to hate gets taken away from your direct control …
Starkey?
Anyone stupid enough to buy a Gran Torino doesn’t have the brains to advise others.

It thought the FM’s response was at its best when he talked about Osborne justifying transactions costs to rUK business people and increased debt burden/interest/tax to rUK voters.
I wish he would stop the line “sovereign will of the people of Scotland”. I totally get what he is on about, but the language is a bit OTT and clumsy. Needs to just keep it simple and plain.
Don’t you just love it Dave when a plan comes together, or in this case falls apart! I’ll bet there certain people in BTHQ running around like headless chickens scratching their heads trying to figure out why the YES camp are avoiding the traps so diligently set by UKOKers and UKOKers keep stepping in them instead. 😛
If you put together a list to make the Scots consider independence, this is it,cheers stay bt no thanks!
David Starkey is a spoilt brat who has grown old, wrinkly and boring without actually growing up. Like all spoilt brats, he’s best ignored.
Just got a change. Org asking me to sign it for Let’s stay together. 12,000 odd had signed it so I take it this is a concerted effort.

I believe in the next few weeks you may see a move towards leaving the ropes and being more adventurous in attack. It is also my opinion for what it is worth that the real heavy knock out blows have yet to be delivered.

Starkeys remarks are bad enough, but if you go back in time, there is worse: there was an author called TWH Crosland who wrote “The Unspeakable Scot” Well worth a read and wholly available online (pdf, txt etc):

I suspect that Crosland wasnt alone in what he thought.
…and yet I’ve spent two days in work hearing tea break conversation from other tables regarding how poor salmond was and how they are voting no due to him not answering questions.
To be honest I think it would need someone from eastenders or whatever “reality” show is currently on to come out in favour of Indy in order for the handful of folk I am talking about to change to yes. I despair
Greetings from Raleigh, North Carolina.
This is completely off topic but, having seen the news about H. He is a constitutional lawyer and former law professor at a prestigious university, so I hope he will have the good sense to say something about it. I’ll post when I get a response.

So I take it they don’t think the pile of stones at Gretna is going to cut it so they’re sending “lurve” letters now. Shows how bad their education system is when they need 200 of them to write it!
The most amazing thing for me is just how out of touch these people are with what’s going on in Scotland. They see Scotland remotely from a TV report and think they can help.Just what they think or hope to achieve is anyone’s guess! But English people living in England or abroad expect us to change our vote because they might lose some grouse shooting. We have had 300 years of remote control and that’s the point they miss. This is not about them or the UK this is our time not theirs and they can’t stand that.We are winning this everyday the campaign goes on.The small meetings out with the msm are converting 2 to 300 people a day. With 6 weeks to go the movement is to Yes.
Dave McEwan Hill said: We’ve never had so many people in looking for badges and stickers
Dont know if its a case of confirmation bias, but I reckon I’ve seen a lot more over the past week as well. Mind you, driving up Loch Lomond side the other day, there was one of those ghastly “Proud to be Scots, Delighted to be United” posters on the LHS

Interesting domain name that BTW. Owned by some Perthshire toff if you do a whois lookup.
Also on that web page there is a bank account sort code Its 83-91-35 Adams and Co, Edinburgh who boast:

I think you are right. It has been a long campaign, but the best bits are yet to come. What have No got? They can bang on about the currency – I think that will be nailed finally quite soon. After that what is there? Platitudes like “Best of both worlds”. What does that actually mean? More letters from more celebs? Apart from the old project fear tactics, which have been systematically debunked, I really don’t think they have any ammunition.
Dan Snow has been on channel 5 news saying how they love us and want us to stay.
My hubby is home and the air is now blue!
Has Plan B signed it ?
I know it is not his style but I’d love to hear Alex Salmond say, JUST ONCE 😛 , to Darling … “for goodness sake tak the spuds oot o yer lugs and LISTEN! We will be using the POUND! That’s P O U N D … spells POUND! Now can we get onto some REAL debating now please?” 😛
I’ve just heard that Glenn Campbell personage
I notice there has been quite a few complaints today about insults on JaBa but is it ok to call Glen Campbell a baldy bastirt ?
Nice work Rev.
You couldn’t make this stuff up.
It’s probably been said already but they can all fuck off.

Thereb does seem to be an air of desperation in the media. It’s lie they are trying desperately to apply “media Pressure” ie you repeat that pressure is growing, there is growing anxiety in the party, there is a need for Salmond to declare a plan B” all pretty much that same currency thing that has been said since day 1 by a mainstream journalism that really pretty much knows the answer. They are trying to see if the Yes campaign cracks and there’s not really much else they have. If the public get scunnered with them banging on they are forced to go onto territory they are unsure of. The public never seem to ask the obvious, what exactly have we got for our three hundred years of partnership? Apart from a bankrupt, corrupt system of patronage and grace and favour that bankrolls the entire No campaign. We could have had that 300 years ago. That BT increasingly look like the “haves” and the English Aristocracy (I refuse to call it anything else) fronted by somebody from Labour shows how perverse the whole thing is. There is no democracy in a campaign run and financed from another country and Scots people aren’t so daft as not to notice. It is Labour’s shame that it has had to front it but that is the price of ermine. The more this drips into the consciousness the more likely it is we are going to win.
Starkey is a man with issues. A homosexual quaker and english nationalist. Lovely. And he hates Scotland because we stop his beloved england being an perfect island nation with no filthy borders to worry about.
Did the fragrant Hilary Mantel sign the letter? Her award winning books are littered with references to england being an island. And from the mouths of French ambassadors too! Not very likely at the time of the Auld alliance.
Vote yes to exist as Scots or no for extermination. Simple choice.
Soda
We have to keep the heid buddy. By voicing our thoughts without the sweary words we get the point over much better.
Saying that it’s hardly a surprise you feel angry as we all do. \the difference is we are winning and we can be more sympathetic to the desperation of the NT campaigners as they have nothing to say but growling pish which most of us are immune to by now.
keep the heid and on the 19th watch how many go out their way to tell you “course i voted YES” – They know that you know the truth and that on it’s own will more than ease your furrowed brow.
If we lose and the cuts start a destruction of Scotland you have my permission to remind them it’s all their fault the ("Tractor" - Ed)s that they are.
By the way most of that list have never been to Scotland and more than likely live abroad (for tax reasons)
”
Starkey is a smelly old man”.
There got that off my chest.
The only way folk will look down on Scotland is if we vote No. Then we will be everything he describes.
Another two undecideds now Yes voters. A Yes badge is a wonderful icebreaker.
Get those Yes badges on, folks. 🙂
What happens after this is over? The tories are clearly unelectable but what about labour. Unless there is a serious clear out and I don’t know who they could replace them with that would restore any faith in that party then I see no way back for them either.
Just heard on the radio that a “punter” in England has placed a£600,000 bet on NO! Nothing to do with odds on YeS shortening in the last week then? W.T.F.
To quote Billy Connolly, “Scotland will get what it deserves whichever way it votes”.
Very telling for the no supporters because the austerity that will follow a no vote, the privatisation of the NHS in Scotland, more food banks, homelessness, unemployment, more child poverty. You will all have voted for this and reap what you sow.
@YESGUY
I must remember never to upset you. 😀
@ Cag-does-thinking. Well said. This current unionist media hysteria over the recent debate is yet another attempt to get at AS. It never ceases to amaze me that the unionist media, especially the London-based part, really believe that Alec Salmond IS the Yes campaign and if they can somehow “break” Salmond they will “break” the Yes campaign. We all know the opposite is the case. The people of Scotland ARE the Yes campaign, and they are unbreakable.
Dear Scotland , please stay , if you leave and we refuse a currency union, we will be saddled with well over a trillion in debt , with no oil , whisky exports , huge fishing grounds , limitless energy or water. We love you… it will be different this time… honest.

Maybe they put the decimal point in the wrong place?
It was probably Danny alexander that placed the bet, we all know he is not great with figures unless he is manipulating them.
O/T Today I sent an e-mail to David Clegg the political editor of the Daily Record and asked him to name one of the senior SNP politicians who stabbed Alex Salmond in the back Reply- No not without betraying basic journalistic ethics.
From the answer I believe that the headlines were fabricated lies as were the associated pages. Hang your head in shame.
Croompenstein says:”Is it ok to call Glenn Campbell a baldy bastirt?”
Yes!
It’s (not for me anyway) about f’n swearing it’s about using personal insults particularly relating to body image to attack people when their words and actions are perfectly good reasons to be ridiculing them. It lessens your argument.
Is “Alex Salmond’s fat” A good argument for voting no or a useful contribution to anything? All it does is make you disregard the opinion of whoever said it. and it works just the same for the other way.
No matter how it’s intended it comes across as misogynist bull or macho posturing depending on the target.
And Soda if “Most people are now pretty much decided on their voting intentions “Then what is the point in discussing anything at all , stu might as well shut up shop and go on holiday. Every voter counts
If I want to direct an undecided woman to a pertinent article on here and the first comment they see is going to be about Jackie Baillie’s weight rather than the nonsense that’s come out of her mouth… or “fuck starkey” (actually I’ve changed my mind about the swearing since the first line) oh work it out, it’s not rocket science.
@Lesley-Anne –
Aw shucks Lesley-Anne I wasn’t implying you had said Glenn Campbell was a baldy bastirt I was just wondering if it was ok to say Glenn Campbell is a baldy bastirt. just wondering what the consensus was and if it was ok to call Glenn Campbell a baldy bastirt if the consensus is that it’s ok then I will say that Glenn Campbell is a baldy bastirt if however the consensus is that it’s not ok then I will refrain from calling said Glenn Campbell a baldy bastirt..
Phew..
These people will say or do anything in their effort to maintain Scotland’ as a resource base for exploitation by London. Despicable as this man is, through the disgusting comment about the first minister, he has, I feel ‘projected’ his own deeply prejudiced views, which tells the real story. We have had historians like this throughout history, they are more akin to ‘spin doctors of past events’.
@Nana Smith
Another piece of a bullshit non story from the labour party as there is no way Nicola Sturgeon would have said anything different regarding currency than Alex salmond.
Nearly 800,000 people have signed the YES declaration so this love in has some way to go yet!
Also these are real people, not so called celebs and these are the ones who matter.

I’ve seen many posts from Cameron since I first discovered this site, and I’ve been aware of you as from today.
On the whole, I think I prefer Cameron’s attitude.
So from Doc Starkey’s “Caledonian Hitler” who “sees the English everywhere, like the Jews” through to
link to theguardian.com
and
“To win the debate, Salmond had to win over Darling. But he didn’t even try. Far from reassuring Darling that he was open to all kinds of ideas about currency, for example, Salmond stuck to impersonating a chicken and clucked La Marseillais in front of a fake neutral audience bussed in from England to boo, heckle and shout insults and all got 25 quid each for their day out from the loony bin”
Guess which bit I added, its hard to eh? What a UKOk freak show’s on display now.
Juteman, totally agree. The whole world will piss themselves laughing at us if we vote no.
Jim Sillars says that the SNP are not the leaders of the yes campaign. Would there be a yes campaign without the SNP negotiating the referendum Mr Sillars?
Starkey is the living proof that too many people are going to university. This twerp is the BBC’s comic relief in residence, wheeled out on programmes like Question Time for the specific purpose of winding people up. God knows he has no other function; if I want to know about history, Wikipedia is likely to have more insight. He should be driving around in a little feckin’ clown car with his knees up under his chin.
@Nana Smith
Divide and conquer, Nana, divide and conquer!
Didn’t stairheid ask Nicola, “What’s your plan B on Currency”, and got exactly the same answer Salmond gave to Darling.
To those who don’t like swearing on here thank your lucky stars that Steven Seagull isn’t around to comment on Sillars latest intervention!
@ Jim, who cares now who started what.
Come on everyone, lets stick together and back everyone and everything that will ensure we all get our country back from this whole giant BetterogetherBBC fraud.
Hey folks, this isn’t the first time we have chatted with Soda, who is effeminately one of us. There are crossed wires, perhaps, as well as a difference in opinion.
Starting to wonder if Salmond’s performance in the debate was a deliberate ploy to get the No campaign to focus all their attack on one issue (i.e. currency)
I think now we have the undecided’s in a position where they think the only reason for voting No is because the currency answer is not there. Euro membership, borders and all other nonsense is now no longer in people’s thoughts
If Yes can break the currency issue in the debate at the end of the month does that kill the No campaign credibility?
If my analysis is correct isn’t amazing that we are only 1 question away from winning? Who would have though that a year ago?
They just don’t get what this is all about. They don’t understand Scotland at all.
As for all this ‘you’re my best friend drivel’ I aint forced any of my mates to keep a ton of cemtex in their front room. I don’t rip them off then tell them they’re scroungers. And I don’t tell them what to do.
Anyone who willingly associates with Better Together (f who let’s not forget accuse Yes campaigners of being uneducated nazi racist anti English…. etc) are no friends of mine.
If they loved us they would see how much of a struggle the Scottish people are going through and give us a bit of support against the UK state and it’s organs of the press. Some do – ordinary folk and household names. They are friends of Scotland.
Starkey et all are irrelevant, excepting that their intervention can only push more to Yes. In that sense alone, it is welcome.
Starkey – surely his intervention is a wind up? Or his hatred of Scotland is so great that he will revel in our defeat more than he wants to be shot of us? Or can he not bear that it is we who are leaving to forge a new society. It is our choice to leave?
My message to the celebrities in England. Please go and take your class system, plummy accents,Trident missiles, bedroom tax,John Bull,Hessian checked jackets in mustard yellow with non matching bright red breeks, overcrowded overpriced polluted capital, gutter press,Union Jack cool Britannia Jack Wills pish,BBC England, bad debt, dead empire,Royal family tax dodgers. However we will take your Billy Bragg and make him the foreign office minister for England cause we know you would love that.

If any of these 200 celebs (allegedly) had any political conscience at all, we would have heard from them long ago about their objections to the welfare cap, bedroom tax, austerity cuts, NHS privatisation, trident, Westminster corruption etc.
But no. They all come together spontaneously on the issue of Scottish Independence, with no reference to the issues that matter to Scots.
Yes, Scotland Should Be An Independent Country, and they should a’ bile their heeds in a pan o’ shite.

Oh wait?
Celebrities love being associated with other celebrities.
The greater the status the greater the love-in. I am more famous because I am in the company of famous people.
You can equate it to parking your expensive car in a far off bay in the Tesco car park to avoid dings and dents, only to discover on returning from shopping that a crappy van is on one side and a heap or rust parked on the other, each driver thinking their car’s status will benefit by close association.
Thanks for that Croomp, I was a wee bit worried for a second you were suggesting that … awe shucks never mind just glad we’ve got it resolved, whatever it was that needed resolving. 😀
Starkey and Sewell , reminds me of Stadtler and Waldorf.. only nastier , trying to get us to stay by reminding us of these clowns is a stroke of genius. Don’t worry though.. there are plenty of other nationalities they can look down their noses at ,in a year or two they will be pouring their bile on all Europeans.
I think Nana that the headline says everything you need to know.
Labour claims Nicola Sturgeon is behind Salmond attacks
Johann Lamont, the Scottish Labour leader, names the Deputy First Minister as the source of briefings against Mr Salmond but Ms Sturgeon says the mood in the SNP has never been better.
So without reading another word in the article we are all made fully aware of who is the TRUE back stabber … it is, as we all well know, NOT Nicola Sturgeon but it is … none other than the rabbit bolt hole dweller herself … Johann Lamont! 😛

Nearly 800,000 people have signed the YES declaration so this love in has some way to go yet!
800,000 I think is an old figure released a couple of months ago – would love to see it top the million. Am sure we are due an update soon!
Great to hear your team are doing well – as I told you, they play an absolutely vital role.
Nice you could make it to the Newsroom – will be another one soon I hope x
@gman – No Plan B then 🙂
… each time I get a response but never an answer …
Sorry folks but have I just gone through a time warp or something here?
In case folks don’t know yet, that was a quote from Johann Lamont 8 minutes 41 seconds into today’s F.M.Q.’s here.
link to tinyurl.com
Now I know, as I am the village idiot on this site, that I am one of the more thicker individuals 😛 around but surely if she gets a ‘response’ from the First Minister then that surely is an ‘answer’, is it not? 😉
I am seriously confused now, even more so than usual. 😛 If Lamont is saying a response is NOT answer then perhaps she, as a former English teacher, apparently 😉 , should stand up and explain to one and all what exactly a response is and WHY a response is not an answer. 😀
@gman – Mmwaa mmwaa, or what ever the spelling is for air-kisses.
gman
Can someone from Yes send them a document in reply – just a simple list of all the 800,000+ names who have signed the pledge.
.
They are the people who have a vote and are fighting for this. 200 celebs? 12000 names? Not quite in the same league.
Starkey is an odious little character, as has been witnessed several times on Question Time.

Looks like Dave’s Christmas card list!
Well done gman , it’s a veritable Who Cares of the establishment , i see Robert Winston is on the list , who kindly suggested we should all pay £200 to see our GP … A vote winner if ever i saw one 😀
Clootie
Magic. Need a new FB campaign to get everyone signed up and push it over the million before the vote.
Hopefully Yes can take it forward- plenty Yessers not signed up.
Now that they have no power over us and that we will be their equals for fifteen hours on the 18th of September, now they respect us.
What are these people like.
Lets make sure we don’t balls this up, they won’t give us a second chance.
do = so
oops
@Clootie
Is there a webpage with a running total ? I seem to recall AS saying when it reaches 1 million he’ll know we will win.
I can’t be bothered with celebrity culture, so can’t say how many of these individuals work with or for the BBC. Now, where’s that tinfoil? 🙂
That list is as good a reason as any to say YES. Those down south trying to impose their will on us again. Isn’t it enough to be having it from the UK government and its pseudo Scots.
Preferred this advice from a much troubled English genius –
If your in a rut you’ve gotta get out of it, out of it, out of it ! Malcolm Owen – The Ruts circa 1979
Aaahh the formative years!
Bryan Ferry is also in there… do you think if 200 of us wrote and asked him to stop backing fox hunting , he would listen?

Starkey and Schama are both odious UK historians with an absolute contempt for Scotland.
Completely ridiculous that they are on this list. They were also some of the first to support Rory the Tory’s Patio at Gretna.
Nothing about caring for Scotland and it people – all about maintaining the delusion of the British Empire.

I’m surprised Kelvin Mackenzie isn’t on the love bomb list, as he really really loves all things Scottish. Or even Ray Winston who affectionately refers to Scots in London as tramps, what a nice man Ray is.
Mick Jagger – Street Fighting man with a knighthood.
Any word on how the big canvass went?
I guess the ones that haven’t got ‘titles’ are hoping to get one soon.
Is Baroness Deech on that list, anyone got a copy and tell me please?
I haven’t quite finished with her after QT from Solihull or Nuneaton, when the whole panel started dissing Scotland and the Scots whilst the crowd roared them on.
Deech, said one of her grannies was Scottish, so she felt perfectly justified in talking our wee pretendy Parliament in the most arragant dismissive fashion possible. I think Starkey or Scharma was also in on it. A real Scot bile hate fest.
There was a guy there from the Quillam Foundation who was completely out of her depth. I wrote to him a said what he had been right in the middle of, was a perfect example of the structural racism inherent in English culture. It is forbidden to direct that on Muslims (he), Jews (Scharma and Deech) or Irish, so it is displaced onto Scots, who don’t count higher than dogs. He never replied but I alerted Lallands peat Worrier and he got stuck in and if became the start of the anti QT outrage.
When we vote YES we will be subject to dog’s abuse until we fuck off and their economy goes down the grubber. Then they will start to give us the respect they have owed us for centuries. Time for payback.
Revenge is a dish best tasted cold.
I don’t suppose many people read our greatest philosopher David Hume these days. But this wee essay about the First Principles of Government (1768 or therabouts) is worth a look. Hume strips it to its basics – which many many yes campaigners will recognise: link to constitution.org
“When men act in a faction, they are apt, without shame or remorse, to neglect all the ties of honour and morality, in order to serve their party; and yet, when a faction is formed upon a point of right or principle, there is no occasion, where men discover a greater obstinacy, and a more determined sense of justice and equity…”
(my bold)
And all the No campaign can come up with is a list of love-bombing luvvies?
It’s strange how all these newspapers, TV and radio companies have the exact same headline story, Alex Salmond and Plan B. You would think it was co-ordinated, wouldn’t you.
Even the news bulletin on Clyde 2 this morning, their politiacal editor and friend of STV, Colin Mackay, was telling us that they would be discussing the currency issue at Holyrood today and if you miss it then go to their website where you can find updates from Holyrood on the currency issue.
It’s really obvious now that this is another one of their “Dambuster” moments. That this is an all out attack from every media outlet in the UK.
And it is getting them no where.
John King
Expect a response from the Rowers for Yes group. They have been gey quiet so far but our very own wonderful Katherine Grainger and her massed ranks will make this list look puny.
@Lesley-Anne link to tinyurl.com
Having now just watched the FM take the opposition apart on the currency debacle without appearing to get out of second gear, does anyone else now get the feeling he played Darling and the MSM like a cheap fiddle? 😀
Salmon stated today in Parliament what we all ought to have known for ages: it’s the pound, always was the pound, with or without the Bank of England. If without, then Scotland begins its renaissance without any debt.
I think the No campaign are indulging in self-delusion. If they think they have won the day on a Plan A or B attack they are fools.
I see Dame Judi Dench is on the list. Maybe that’s why Pierce Brosnan chucked the Bond gig after Die Another Day – got fed up with Dench pestering him on set day after day about when the Irish were going to come back into the fold, shared kinship and history on these isles, and all that.
There’s a nicely understater line in Brosnan’s wiki entry, about his school days in London as the only Irish kid in the 1960s:
“And you’re Irish. And they make you feel it; the British have a wonderful way of doing that, and I had a certain deep sense of being an outsider.”
@heedtracker
I totally agree with what you say but credit where it is due, surely Sillars has forgotten that.
You would have thought that if so much money was placed on a NO vote, it would send the price up again on over 55%.
Over the past week the price has dropped from 7/1 to 6/1 the other day.
You would think that after today’s events, with all that money going on NO and Salmond getting crushed by Darling in the Big Debate, that the price would be on it’s way out to 8/1 or higher.
Well, surprise surprise, the price is actually going the other way, it is now at down to 11/2 for over 55%.
Strange!
Same here Black Douglas. He absolutely destroyed the *ahem* opposition today, as he usually does week in and week out. However, today I did get a slight feeling that he was so up for it he was struggling to hold himself back. 😛
OT, but I think this is probably the most sinister effort so far from Better Together. Did Prof Charlie Jeffery not deliberately misrepresent the funding of public services at the Brookings Institution lecture posted here?
Personally, I don’t think their experts have gotten of to a very good start. Apparently Dr. Nichola McEwan is unaware that Britain is not a country (1:02).
Does anyone know the relationship between Edinburgh University and the CBI?

Well, I read the celebrity(?) list. I didn’t realise how out of touch I am with the whole celebrity culture thing.
I have never heard of well over half of the names on that list, nor am I interested in finding out who they are.

Hi Skip_NC – Just a wee though. Perhaps an e-mail to the elected persons who were bad mannered enough to stick their noses into a democratic political vote by Scots to take their destiny into their own hands might be brought back down to Earth if you informed them we Scots, who favour Scottish independence, wish them, when they next celebrate the, “American day of Separation”, from England, a happy Separation day.
Its not 8 years since I moved here and gave up TV and I could only manage 41 of the 200 🙁
Still look on the bright side, not even the 41 will know of me 😉
Alexander Armstrong
Sir David Attenborough
Mary Beard
Stephen Hawking
Terry Jones
I’m disappointed in these five: they’ve often been quite insightful and intelligent, you’d think they’d be on side.
Most of the others I had hoped would have some savvy (not Picard! Not Poirot!) but overall I can’t say I’m heartbro-

NOOOOOOOO!
I Think Basil Brush is a Yesser though..
Robert Peffers, alas, I can’t do that. Congressional rules require that I can only write to those who directly represent me (one Congressman and two senators). I would have loved to have written to Rep. Mike McIntyre, also from NC, and very proud of his Scots heritage, but the rules prohibit that.
I fear I will get little more than a generic response from my rep. The resolution sounds like the sort of twaddle David Cameron would come out with. I am convinced it is not intended for the House of Representatives and certainly not the American electorate. I think it was done purely for the press release that found it’s way into the British media.

The best part of Dr Starkey dribbled down the inside of his mother’s leg.
Celebrities? There aren’t enough letters in the alphabet to denote which ‘list’ some of these goons are on. These attention seeking showbiz-types will put their name to anything if it means publicity. Remember Brass Eye? Doh!
Disappointed to see some names here, educated people who I would have expected to be above such things….Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, David Attenborough.
Keep ’em coming though. We in Scotland love being told what to think.
Starkey? How many divisions does he have?

I haven’t watch any of these debates before on TV so apologies for asking this daft question. Other than a change of channel and audience can we not expect exactly the same questions from Darling and Salmond all over again at the next debate?
Certainly from Darling we know that is all we’re gonna get cos’ he ain’t got any other issue to attack.
So surely if AS can nail him a lot better this time on the currency answer and push him so dam hard on what further powers we can expect if its No then the whole nature of the debate changes with him even more firmly on the rack.
How did I do that?
How did I do that?
I noticed gman’s post, with the full list of the 200 signatories to this love letter.
Just one thing – on 19 September,by the time we have added the obligatory: Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, Lord Nelson… to that lot, by the time we’ve read out all the names – we might not have the energy lest to add: “Your team took one hell of a beating”.
Damn, I should have read that list a bit slower, I thought one of the names was Jock Strap.

Except for the fact that it is relevant as Jackie Baillie is in fact, “Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Cities Strategy”, and by appointing such a grossly clinically obese person to such an office is idiocy by London Labour in Scotland. Do you imagine and overweight person will not say, “If its good enough for the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Cities Strategy, then it’s good enough for ne to be obese”.

Altho I said I was an infrequent visitor what I should have said was I’m an infrequent commentor. Guys I am Yes please have no doubt. I visit daily and glean important info not just from the articles but from the comments made by you all as well. I can say without a moments hesitation that the Rev himself has never had any suspicions about me and I can post my fb link that’s in my own name if you like, I have nothing to hide. Thanks to CameronB for his interjection its appreciated mate. About the swearing, and someone mentioned above about the difference between that and personal insults, I am in full agreement about that. I have never (well almost never!) Been derogatory or personal to or about anyone since this campaign started in person or on line. Quite frankly what’s the point? If I can beat somebody with cogent arguement why assault them with personal abuse? Maybe I’m just getting a bit impatient what with it being close to the event and let’s face it we have had to put up with some amount of shit, isn’t everyone getting annoyed at having to turn the other cheek all the time? As for undecided voters I guess there are always those that haver but I reckon most of the so called un decides are in fact those who can’t be bothered with “aw that politics pish” and are unlikely to vote anyway. I think we are into the end game now where punches shouldn’t be pulled and we give as good as we get and if that means using colourful language when appropriate then so be it. Enough from me lol thanks for listening, here’s to freedom brothers and sisters!
No one’s buying Salmond’s claims about the pound
Scotland’s First Minister is repeating the same tired mantras as his claims crumble
I think Cochrane’s title for his piece Nana says a great deal about Cochrane. He can’t understand how we, an independent Scotland, can use the pound when his best buddy David Cameron and co. say we can’t. As we all know Cochrane is eager to earn his cloak of ermine or knighthood, whichever comes first, so obviously it is Alex Salmond’s fault, naturally. 😛
I think my response to Cochrane is simple and straight to the point.
Tak the spuds oot o yer lugs Cochrane and LISTEN to what Alex Salmond is saying. We will use the POUND, that is the P O U N D which spells POUND, with or without a CU.
Now if this is too difficult for you to understand then please say so otherwise get a life and STOP repeating the same tired old questions about what currency we’d use. The answer is the same NOW as it was back on DAY 1 and the same as it will be on 19th September. We will be using the POUND!
We all know YOU do not like the idea of an independent Scotland using the pound as OUR currency but guess what TOUGH COOKIES! 😀
Sillars is mischief making and helping no one.We are not starting indie Scotland with our own currency its too late and not sensible to change at this stage.Sillars needs to stop falling for the unionists divide and rule and forcing the agenda. The currency thing is all they have and Sillars is helping them prop up their ridiculous campaign.Drop it Jim its Sterling in the short term but not forever.Salmond is doing the right thing holding strong as the unionist want him to fall for their trap and be forced into their agenda.
I don’t think Richard Starkey actually exists
I think he played drums for some band..oh yeh the beatles 🙂

Excellent response, I just don’t think Cocky is clever enough to understand.
Dammit gman, if the Chuckle Brothers were on that list then I’d definitely have been swayed to vote NO. Thank goodness they are not signatories then. 😛
Just got back from the debate in the University of St Andrews. Very interesting stuff, a panel of 4 women, 2 yes and 2 “better together”. The audience of perhaps 100 was clearly majority Yes with some outrageous unionist types – the tory activist who went on about how getting rid of Trident was the worst idea ever was my favourite. One of the “bt” women started her opening presentation with a long explanatio of her children and where in Scotland she was born and brought up, and how she had studied and worked in various parts of Scotland, and how she was proud to be Scottish.
PS Big Jock at 7:52 pm, nothing wrong with plummy accents old bean, vote yah!

@Jim says:7 August, 2014 at 7:42 pm:
“Jim Sillars says that the SNP are not the leaders of the yes campaign. Would there be a yes campaign without the SNP negotiating the referendum Mr Sillars?”
Oh! Come on! Sillers is 100% correct. The leaders of the YES campaign are indeed Blair Jenkins, (no party), and Dennis Canavan, (an independent). There are Labour for YES, Woman for YES, Trade Unionists for YES, English For YES and quite a few more for YES. The SNP are a political party and they are also for YES. Indeed Salmond is huge in the journey to independence but some of us old folks have been fighting this battle since it was very unfashionable to be an SNP member or supporter. I’ve been around since 1946. If we had not fought on through the lean years there wouldn’t have been an SNP for Salmond to join.
Salmond is not the Leader of the YES campaign. He is the leader of the SNP and First Minister of the Scottish Parliament. More than enough for one person to manage.
Real friends would say we’d like you to stay but you must do what you think is best for you.
All 200 of these celebrity friends should be asked if in the event we vote Yes that rUK will still treat us as friends and do all they can to help us do it in as amicable way as possible including currency union ?
Absolutely gutted to find these names on the list…
Pugh
Pugh
Barney McGrew
Cuthbert

A fair point about the great and the good not on the list.
I’m positive that there are more than 200 “great” people in the rUK. How many are there? 10,000? 50,000? It seems that only a tiny fraction of them actually want Scotland to “stay together”.
Alternative scenario – there aren’t many “great” people in rUK, so who cares?
Soda
I am finding a lot of the politically bamboozled, want to be Yes but intend voting No because they’ve been terrorised by Project Fear. It doesn’t take much to put their minds at rest though, if they are truly thinking of what is for the best.
Then again, I met a staunch No the other day, who was very eager to tell me what the score was, but then wasn’t interested in my counter as he had ‘heard all the arguments’. Then he launched into a tirade against the First Minister, in front of potential customers. Numptie.
I don’t think these over-paid people are saying we are “better together” – I think they are pleading with us to stay and continue to shower them with riches. After all, the rich are very expensive and someone has to pay for them.
Is that the real gman? Mk here…
Do any of these people pay the Bedroom Tax?
Doesn’t this list just sum up the no campaign.First they ignore us.Then they try and pacify us with the Edinburgh agreement. Then the warnings come if we dare leave the UK.Then they abuse as as lunatic cyber bats. Then finally they tell us they are taking their baw back if we dinnae agree to their rules. The final nail in the coffin after all the abuse and threats is to get down and beg their estranged partner to stay.Yo know there is nothing worse than an abuser who begs for mercy from the one they abused and will abuse again if they can con them into staying.Straight to the divorce courts with these lying sociopaths.
At gman
Could have written most of that list beforehand.
Only surprises to me were the two scientists Dawkins and Hawking and Ms Bonham Carter.
There were surprising omissions (from those one might presume were asked):
Kelvin McKenzie
Stewart Lee
Jeremy Paxman
Michael MacIntyre
Jeremy Clarkson
David Tennant
The Krankies
Although those last may not have been sufficiently ‘list’ to be asked. – Tough 🙂
There were also a couple of welcome omissions amongst those who would have been asked, notably:
Stephen Fry
Joanna Lumley
but perhaps not that surprising in that they have a ‘little more about them’ to quote a Scottish expression.
Salmond is not the Leader of the YES campaign. He is the leader of the SNP and First Minister of the Scottish Parliament. More than enough for one person to manage.
This is the point about YES Robert, it is NOT being led, driven or anything else by the SNP. The SNP are just one not insignificant cog in the wheel that is YES Scotland. The trouble for the NO camp is that they have no answers to any question that is asked of them. To counter this they decided that they would focus ALL of their attention onto the SNP and Alex Salmond.
What has helped the NO camp maintain their incessant attack on A.S. and the SNP is that the NO camp, ostensibly the Labour party in Scotland, have had a mind altering and mind blowing HATRED of A.S. and the SNP ever since the 2007 Holyrood elections. What is more they are stuck in this hatred from 2007 and have been unable to move on. I think this explains why they are so fixated on the SNP etc. It is almost as if they are actually oblivious to the fact there is a referendum happening. Yes they mention it but in reality in their own minds they are just trying to bully the SNP because of what happened in 2007. Gawd help us when they realise they also lost in 2011. 😛
It’s real. Hacked from their website.
When I say hacked, view source – cut and paste, remove HTML tags. 🙂

spot on about Sillers . That man should think before he speaks. He really gets on my nerves and think he is too old and way ofcourse with his views. he wants to take us back to the 60.s
Watched with Lord Forsyth and he was a joke agreeing with the said lord and downing A. Salmond.
Jim you have had a guid run please retire.
To be fair Chic, they don’t have Joanna Lumley on the list because when they went to her house to get her to sign the *ahem* letter but found out that she was up in Gretna *cough* donating a stane from her garden to the great Gretna Towers build. 😛
I would agree with Robert. Yes belongs to all of us. By electing the SNP we have obtained a referendum but Yes is open to all that want an independent Scotland. The SNP have one vision for Scotland, much of which I share but I would prefer our own currency (Scottish pound, existing notes) and not to join NATO but I accept that others may have a different point of view. However I must vote Yes first in order to get any say in where we go in the future.
I’m not making my mind up until I hear what Ant and Dec think. (If you can’t tell them apart, Ant’s the one who’s always on the left, and he only has one and a half thumbs – sorted!)

I am beginning to have a wee bit of sympathy with Steven Seagull and his stance on Sillars, WTF is he trying to do this close to polling day with his dissing of the FM
When all these really rich people say “Let’s stay together,” is it an invitation to a sleep-over? If so, the wife and I would like to pop over and stay with Cliff Richard for a few weeks. Apparently he stays in Jamaica these days, miles away from the misery of austerity cuts proposed by the tories and backed by labour. Just what makes him and the other 199 think they have the right to interfere in Scotland’s democratic process is anybody’s guess.
Lesley-Anne, in these parts the Labour hatred of the SNP goes back to !(&( and how they let ‘that woman’ in, I kid you not!
Maybe Jim Sillars is feeling a wee bit sorry for the NO camp Croomp and thought if he added a wee bit of controversy it would waken them up and confuse them over their one question attack policy. 😛
If we win we will get dog’s abuse and if we lose we will get total derision. You can bank on this headline from the Daily Heil – Scared Hearts. I don’t know how I’d cope with the shame. Fortunately I have never been more certain that we will win. Yes is everywhere.
Sorry – 1979
Miniplenty?
@Lesley-Anne
Most certainly keep up the good work.
I think you’re right Paula. Trouble is they can not see beyond that point. She, who shall remain nameless, got in because the then Labour party that was in power were useless. Had the Labour party under, Jim Callaghan I think, actually been doing some good for the country, and I don’t just mean Scotland here, then the vote of no confidence would never have happened. So in reality it is NOT the fault of the SNP they lost power it is the incompetence of their party whilst in power.
laukat says: August, 2014 at 7:50 pm:
“Starting to wonder if Salmond’s performance in the debate was a deliberate ploy to get the No campaign to focus all their attack on one issue.
I was pointing to that fact just after the TV debate. I said I would go through the recording in the morning and count the time the question was asked, and answered
It was in excess of 22 times. In every instance the answer was Scotland will use the pound. That is a straight answer and very unequivocal. Salmond also said he wanted a Currency union for preference. There is no Plan B, C or other letter. An independent Scotland will use the pound. They will seek a currency union but if the English don’t agree the Scotland will used the pound anyway.
Let me point you at another example where Salmond played them at the exact same game. Salmond said The SG will consider a third question on the Referendum paper if someone would define the Question but added, I would prefer just YES or NO. All three Westminster Parties fought tooth & nail to prevent a devo question on the paper convinced Salmond was looking for a devo question as that was the then popular choice in Scotland.
They fell for it and Salmond got his wish for a two option question. Now Salmond has done it again.
Where are Thomson and Thomson? They must be on it as they obviously fit the profile.
Haddock, Tintin and Snowy are for Yes ever since they left the Black Isle, while Prof Calculus is dithering because he has lent his Pendulum to the equally ludicrously barbered academic Prof Curtis for the duration of the Referendum
Now we have S.Smith having experts! trying to take apart all the currency options. They are trying to undermine all the white paper options.
Party political broadcast just started for Better together on
Scotland tonight .Why is this utter pish being sanctioned by STV These people dont have a vote and we certainly do not require any of this patronising crap from Dan Snow and his ilk.
Second item is now the currency issue . What is it that Rona Dougal and Bernard Ponseby dont understand about Scotland using the pound with or without a currency union. The pound is not exclusively English, it is as much ours as belonging to RUK.
So today all the MSM go apoplectic with their screaming front page headlines about Alex Salmond and Plan B[sic] believing that they’ve got some kind of ‘Gotcha!’ moment and that the Yes movement is somehow in turmoil because Scotland won’t be ‘allowed’ to be in a currency union because, they say deliriously, that Alistair Darling won the debate! (It’s all about alicsammin, you see!)
Though not really local, we get the Oban Times on a Thursday, and what do we see – a whole page advert from BetterTogetherNoThanksU-KOK (basically an enlargement of the pack of lies sent through the post).
But in even in our darkest hour we can depend on BTNTU-KOK to brighten things up, and haven’t they just done that with today’s ‘Let’s stay together’ celebrity[sic] lovebomb!
It just goes to show the mentality of the BT spinmeisters that they believe that a bunch of predominantly English ‘names’ that are doing very well – Thank you very much! – out of the current British Establishment-led, class-ridden, xenophobic, super-wealthy, tax-dodging arrangement and, as one, telling us to vote No because ‘We’re all just one big happy family, really we are, and since everything’s so good and dandy right now, why change it? And we really love Scotland and you Scots. We’ve just been, um, a bit shy of telling you that until now, you know how it is.’ is anything but offensive, condescending and pathetic. But, hey, it’s brought a smile to our faces and more than a few outright LOLs!
And it’s good to know that a fair number of Scots have today seen or heard about ‘The 200 List’ and gone, “GTF ya bunch a bams! Who the fuck dae yiz think yiz are?!”
He sneers at us and ours. We tell him to fuck off because he’s a sanctimonious two-faced twat.
The hilarious thing though is that I bet he’s furious that someone put his name on that letter 🙂

They are ramping up the currency fear tactic tonight.
For Salmond to offer discussion on a Plan B is to invite even more derision from the British state intent on retaining its ‘territories’ that bring it vast income.
I’m sure we’ve been down this road before with this NIESR crowd Nana. Mind you having watched the demolition job Alex Salmond did on the the *ahem* opposition party leaders today I can’t say I’m all that surprised that this crowd, or any of the other NO camp sympathisers for that matter, has poked its head above the parapet.
@Lesley-Anne says:7 August, 2014 at 8:17 pm… ea:
Well, Lesley-Anne, as the Wings village idiot you’re a very astute lady. Fact is the BT lot are totally lost and they confused themselve, (wi a wee puckle nudge frae the FM). They have confused two issues – one the currency that Scotland will use and the other that the SG want a currency union.
They threep on about Plan B but there has never really ever been other than a Plan A with several options as laid out in the White Paper. So they ask what currency an independent Scotland will use and always get exactly the same answer – Scotland’s own currency, The Pound Sterling and qualified with and we want a currency union. Thing is that qualification is the first choice but there are no other plans just the options of either a currency union, no currency union and a scots pound tied to the English pound, not tied to the English pound and so on. So they always get an answer – they just don’t like the answer, and Salmond has fooled them into doing what he wants again.
If I get time tomorrow I’ll start to edit a video from the TV debate and cut out every example og Darling asking the question and every answer given by Salmond over 22 times.
Nice to rule you, to rule you, nice…

When you see this group of celebs voicing their opinions to Scottish voters it’s hard not to be reminded that they have done very well out of the union and rather better than the majority of Scottish actors and academics who have to either transfer themselves to London and the south or overseas to achieve any kind of career.
Some years ago Dan Snow (historian) and two colleagues one was an archaeologist) came to Scotland to make a documentary about St Kilda. The only Scot I saw was the boatman and he didn’t have a voice.
Not only do they take our physical resources away from us, they also take our cultural heritage as wall.
This is my first post as I usually like reading the comments rather than posting myself. Today I had to break this habit because I’m so angry with the arrogance of these celebs. I’m also very excited today as I spotted 4 houses with yes signs and flag displays. This is good news because I live in Moray and it is a rural area. Keep up the good work wings.
If the unionists are so keen to know what the SG’s Plan B is they should be required to say what their Plan A would be if they were elected in 2016 after a YES vote and what their plan B would be. It would surely be enlightening for many Scottish voters to hear what they have to say for themselves.
I agree with you Robert, no not about being astute I’ll leave that decision for others to make ;), but the NO camp have whilst trying to be ultra smart and confuse the electorate and the F.M. have only ended up by confusing themselves. 😛
As you point out they, the NO camp, have totally confused themselves over what the currency will be in an independent Scotland and the desire of the Scottish Government to have a currency union with rUK.
Now most folks on here are intelligent enough to figure out that an independent Scotland WILL be using the pound as its currency. There is NO doubt about this fact. No one can stop us from using the pound so we will be using the pound end of discussion. 😀
What the NO camp appear incapable of comprehending is that the Scottish government have a desire to have a currency union with rUK. Now we all understand that this desire is not necessarily the do all and end all of negotiations because we know that despite the desire from Holyrood to have a C.U. if Westminster in their infinite stupidity still hold out for NO C.U. then they are stuck well up the creek without a paddle and we, independent Scotland, will be sailing off into the sunset debt free.
There is no way that any of the world banking organisations will refuse to work with a new independent Scotland, particularly once they have been over our “books” and see just how wealth there really is in an independent Scotland.
I know we all try and avoid using oil in any of our financial arguments but really we can’t avoid looking to Shetland and the world’s largest oil field and then to the West of Arran and saying well if you think we are rich now, just think how much richer we will be when these two fields start coming on line. 😛

The entire thrust of the No campaign has been to muddy the water, to do it by blatant exaggeration, shameless lies, and scaremongering, to such an extent that Joe Public belives both sides cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

There is always the open letter to the local press, TV or Radio station or is the USA even worse than the Westminster Mafiosi?
;-))
I don’t think the electorate will be getting the message that we can use the pound irrespective of whether there is a currency union or nor as the unionists keep misleading them. One of them said it tonight again on STV. “Scotland won’t be able to use the pound”. The disappointment was that the YES supporter did not correct her.
The usual thing happened in the BBC discussion tonight between the two Americans. The YES supporting Professor was cut off from responding to the NO supporting Senator at a critical point in the discussion. Typical BBC Scotland. It seems that No always gets the last word.
Reading through the stellar celeb list got me wondering whether Neil Stuke is the same person as Neil Stuke. Also wondering who he is/they are, as I’m not acquainted with the name/names.
Well here is a real intellectual (and Scottish Nationalist) – Tom Nairn – on the history of the Union in the ‘New Left Review’
UNION ON THE ROCKS? – see link to newleftreview.org
Starkey is an absurd buffoon in comparison to Nairn.

Thanks for the heads up re Joanna Lumley.
Disappointed, thought her Gurkha effort displayed more empathy with the downtrodden.
BTW ‘village idiot’ ‘Aye right!’
I totally agree with you Chic about Lumley and her Gurgha campaign, I thought she would be more understanding of our situation. Still you live and learn huh. 😀
I’m just covering my earse with that title Chic. 😛 Any point in the future I go way off and get totally isolated 1 against the millions then I have the ‘village idiot’ moniker as a wee back up. 😉 See, I think they call it thinking ahead. 😛
I chose one name at random to see what they’ve said about Scottish independence.
Chose John Sessions. Wow, look what he’s said:
“It’s absolutely ridiculous. I think it’s a waste of money. Och, it’s just nonsense. Have one parliament, Westminster. Get rid of the European bloody Parliament, the Scottish assembly, or Parliament, I should say, the Welsh Assembly. They’re just money spinning … oh God, they make me so angry.”
quickly followed by :
“”I get so bored with people going, ‘Ukip are a bunch of racists.’ They’re nothing of the kind. Nigel Farage talks more sense than the rest of the politicians put together. The United States of Europe is madness.”

“Some States still call it Separation Day, mainly the Southern now ex slave owning ones.”
While searching for something else I came across a USA historian who claimed that the name, “Hillbilly”, was due to USA immigrants who were Scottish/Irish Orangemen. Kind of makes sense. It might also accout for the Anglo/USA bias against the Hillbillies and their tendency to look down upon them in the usual Anglo manner as somehow less intelligent.
It’s been a long day – G’Night Folks.
John Session sounds like a know-nothing reactionary ‘Home Counties’/Colonel Blimp character.
Blimp is pompous, irascible, jingoistic and stereotypically British (i.e. in this context an upper class ‘chinless wonder’, wind and piss merchant).
Let’s see if this post goes through, last two posts are M.I.A. 😛
The very talented cartoonist Martin Rowson tweeted on subject of the 200 celebs
And Rod Liddle & David Starkey & Alain de Botton etc etc. Who wouldn’t vote yes to be shot of those simpering arseholes?

Quote from a unionist, on the DT:
“The Forests Of Azure • 27 minutes ago”
“!The conniving wee hoor will be scheming away behind ecks back as I type this. I think its brilliant! Keep it up! the thought of Eck being cast aside before the vote pure warms the heart so it does.
Ps. I wonder what the briefings against salmond will be like when the big scandals hit the front pages?”
The person he is talking about with such foul language is Nicola Sturgeon.

Tell me about it CameronB, my own father in law was one of the very staunch no people you just mentioned (at 10:13) and we had words one drunken do at his house a year ago last april. Since then he has had a change of heart it seems (altho we have never brought the subject up again as things were better left as is in the manner of all drink fueled family disagreements) for my wife told me last week that he has now changed his mind and is now a Yes voter! I like to think i was at the very least at least a small part in his conversion 😉
Oh dearie me. It appears that the infamous 200 have not really had as big an impact on the people of Scotland as Dan Snow and the infamous 200 thought they would have. The Daily Record has been running a poll about whether ‘celebs’ should voice their opinion on the referendum. It is currently running at 69% for NO 😛

I wonder why is Lady Alba missing from this list of slebs? link to m.youtube.com
They don’t give a damn about Scotland’s people.
It is all about their personal egos of being something in the british empire.
Are they not indirectly admitting that ‘Project Fear’ has not worked as intended?
To see Starkey lovebombing us is bizzare. However I also see Max Hastings who said two days ago
‘He had to renounce such arguments, because Salmond mocks the No campaign as ‘Project Fear’; because polls show that Scottish pride is affronted if anybody reminds them how meagre is their income tax base, how feeble is entrepreneurialism north of the border, how drugged on state subsidy their nation has become.’
Not exactly lovebombing us then, were you Max.
I have to admit though, I’m disappointed at seeing Patrick Stewart on the list. Whatever happened to the Prime Directive Captain?
Meh. It’s Starkey. Dr shmockter, way too far up himself.
Can we have him on every day, saturation coverage, until the 18th please Auntie ?
@Robert Peffers
I reiterate, there would be no referendum without the SNP and I think Mr Sillars is being a bit Ingracious but then there is no love lost between him and Salmond is there?
Yes, people have been campaigning for independence for a long, long time but it is only through the election of the SNP that we now have a chance to have a vote on the matter.
Whether Jim Sillars likes it or not, Alex Salmond is the face of the Yes movement and Sillars should realise that this is not the time to air his grievances by causing division in the ranks as there will be plenty of time for that in the event of a yes vote!
Get a grip Sillars, we are all in this together!
The vast majority of these celebrities, and I use that term loosely, have given nothing to the Scottish people, or its culture, so in that respect they are a total irrelevance. In fact, I would go as far as saying that if it wasn’t for work-related experiences, most of them wouldn’t bother crossing the border. As for the Scottish ones in the list, they are all adults and have had the opportunity to relocate to this land that they “love so much”, but they have all chosen to stay elsewhere. Indeed, every single one of them could have relocated, allowing them a vote in the referendum, but they have all chosen to stay elsewhere. As mentioned, they are an irrelevance.
However, if they were wanting to be taken with any seriousness, they would have roundly criticised David Cameron for his refusal to condemn the Israeli attacks on innocent Palestinian civilians, or for Cameron’s disgusting attempts to suggest that bombing evidence was unfounded.
Ah, silly me! Honours, titles and the never-ending gravy train are far more important than a few hundred dead Palestinian children.
ha ha ever thought the reason all these luvvies are so desperate to plead to us Scots not to leave them and how they all love us so much ,is because once we do leave they will have to foot the tax bill of England ,no more tax breaks for you celebs time to get your money out and pay for your own country for a change ,i predict a 75% tax rate in England by the year 2020 unless they go rob some other country of its wealth as they are not likely to tax the big companies the proper amount or stop the massive tax evasion they commit.
Croomp, bud.
I was right…Cos I know.
Sillyarse brit spy Quisling always.
Vota Si.
Creepy engerlish imperialist war criminal scumbags.
Get out of my country.
I lay no claim on your land of perverts, and paedos.
Scotland free.
Ha-ha bawbags 19-9-2014.
Starky is just a disgrace on every subject. How he gets such prominence is a mystery. The historical, hysterical Farage.
The ‘little Inglander’ who accuses everyone else of nationalism. Kettle, black mate. Look in the mirror. Bit like BBC presenters.
The Games commentator who said, ‘she sounds more Scottish than normal’, about a top Scottish athlete. Everywhere they were at it. One morning reporter, shamelessly just reported by listing every English placement. They didn’t like getting beaten at our own Games.
The Games were great, especially with the sound off. The CBBC does the same with the Edinburgh Festival, gives short term contract to London Luvies when there is plenty of better presenters in Scotland.
McQuarrie flies to London HQ’s every three weeks for instructions. The CBBC is Westminster controlled. Central BBC.
‘What happened to the Referendum is a matter for people in Scotland’
Ken: What happened to the Referendum is a matter for people in Scotland’
Odd grammar.
Whether Jim Sillars likes it or not,
I thank Sillars for fighting for the cause though he’s a failed politician.
Did these wonderful folk who love us so much , actually sign this lovebomb or did they have their name typed in by
young Snow?
I imagine getting 200signatures from a group such as that would take some time – unlike the Wings banner .
( Ronnie, did you sign it for me??)
Soda @4.29pm
Wind yer neck in Bubbly Jock!
Starkey only get’s on Question Time because the BBC know he they will get a bigger audience. It’s not for any altruistic reason. They seem wedded to dragging the bottom of the barrel to get their viewing figures up.
Forget the English names. They would have been signatories if it had been India departing the empire 70 years ago. Not worth troubling about.
I am concerned about the Scots on the list. Those who have done very well from their country, only to forsake it, are beneath contempt. They won’t be forgotten.
Yours is already a feeble little country, David. And has been for a long time. Just as you are a feeble little man with a jaundiced view of history. Your little country has been a willing slave and lapdog to America for generations now, snaffling up the crumbs from bigger tables and wagging its little tail obediently.
What does this odious wee troglodyte mean by will become? They already are “A feeble wee country” They just don’t realise it yet!!
@Graham_Lister
But the film “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” is one of the best films ever made. If nothing else watch it for Anton Walbrook talking to the official early in WW II and then later telling Blimp how he hasn’t learned the lesson of WW I.

I can’t express just how disappointed I am that there is no Tom Hollandest on the list, I reaklly think that might have swung me.

“I don’t think Richard Starkey actually exists. Going by that picture above, it’s just another of Steve Pemberton’s horrific caricatures from The League of Gentlemen…”
Whats all this?
We’ll have no shouting here,
this is a local shop for local people! 🙂
Robert Peffers says
“They fell for it and Salmond got his wish for a two option question. Now Salmond has done it again.”
Exactly, Salmonds got them by the gonads.
Dal Raita says
“So today all the MSM go apoplectic with their screaming front page headlines about Alex Salmond and Plan B[sic] believing that they’ve got some kind of ‘Gotcha!’ moment”
Yes Dal it seems they have this fixation with holing the yes campaing below the waterline, what they dont understand is it not going to happen, everytime the punch a hole in out argument it is like poking holes in a sponge, nothing, nada.
Carry on BT
Well ahent the curve on this, so this may have been said already.
Starkey’s stated view on Scottish history is that of believing it only matters when it intersects with English history. He knows a bit about Scottish history, nothing about modern Scotland, and frankly he’s not even worth the effort to ignore him.
This is just another example of patronising ‘we wuv oo weally.’ See Chris Cairn’s excellent Valentines Day cartoon for an astute pictoral depiction of why so many folk think ‘Nah, we don’t think oo weally do.’
Think of the amount of time you’ve had to spend Googling the names to find out who the hell most of these folk are anyway. Wasted.
I don’t care where they’re from. I don’t care who they are. They are, to all man (or woman, for that matter) totally and utterly irrelevant. As I heard someone saying on the radio yesterday this wee ‘lovebomb’ is liable to be entirely counterproductive.
[…] the delightful Rod Liddle (‘Scots are Alcoholics and Drug addicts’) to the super-friendly David Starkey to the wonderful Andrew Lloyd Wbbber (“We have to vote Tory,” he said. “They do […]
Starkey is a twisted wee man with a small mind and bitter heart. typical of the Brit nat coalition of haters!
The signatories put their names to, “We want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you, and to express our hope that you will vote to renew them. What unites us is much greater than what divides us. Let’s stay together.”
Compare these generous and inclusive sentiments with some of the responses. For example Big Jock, who calls all who support the Union ‘lying sociopaths’.
And note, the signatories put their real names to their opinions, unlike brave Big Jock.

Wil, I imagine Big Jock and many other who are ripping the pish out of these nonentities have put their real names on many a petition and I dare say the Yes Declaration.
The fact someone has an internet pseudonym for various sites does not automatically invalidate any point they make.
Similarly, the fact that these people have put their names to a vacuous, wishy-washy, half-hearted…plea? Actually wtf is it…Anyway, this does not somehow mean it is their opinion (Starkey in particular has a history of being snide, sneery, dismissive and generally insulting about us Scots – presumably he wants to keep us like the poor relations that we are so he can feel superior at all times) or that the sentiment expressed on their behalf is actually of value.
I don’t use a real name because I teach in a secondary school and I don’t think it’s appropriate for pupils to know my opinion on some matters.
Will Podmore – how kindly do you expect us to treat our betters who want to continue robbing us and using our land to park their obscene weapons of mass destruction.
Name calling is not part of my nature but you might like to consider the names Alex Salmond has been called and the filth that was deposited in a YES office about Margo Macdonald (now deceased), NIcola Sturgeon and others.
“Generous and inclusive” – well that will be new to us from our betters in London and abroad, where many of them prefer to live instead of wonderful England! I would that it is we who are “generous and inclusive” and by God tolerant of the not so clever who run us from Westminster!
Actually, I can’t get angry at Starkey: he’s so flamboyantly offensive that it’s entertaining.
And I can see his point about Scots being a feeble nation – there have been too many ready to sell the Scottish interest for English gold. The damning adjective applies to the unionist Scots – not us.
schizo Doc
“England was a great country” Anyone know when? Certainly not before the Union, and then it should read Great Britain was a great country.
Was it when England was conquered by the Romans and held for 400 years?
Was it when England was conquered by the Danes near the end of the 1st millenium?
Was it when England was conquered in 1066 and became the territory on a French duke whose lineage regarded themselves as predominantly French, although they did produce some great kings.
Was it when England was lost its last French territory during the reign of Mary Tudor?
Or was it when Queen Elizabeth was so afraid of the Spanish and French?
About the nearest to greatness England ever got was during the reign of Henry VIII, a very short interlude in its 1,600 year history.
Meanwhile over on the top pop scene as young people used to say about 30 years ago, seeing as we are doing the celeb thing Morrissy and Chuck D say yes, although I’m not sure if that’s helpful or not.

[…] Be that as it may, he’s annoyed me this week by leading a love-bombing campaign of Scotland by some well-known and not-so-well-known celebrities opposed to Scottish independence. Don’t go, they tell us in an open letter published on Thursday. They love us too much. We’ve achieved so much together (presumably including fighting and dying in imperialistic wars). The signatories of this letter include such Scottophiles as David Starkey, who loves the country so much that he’s previously labelled it – along with Wales and Ireland – as ‘feeble.’ […]
Bill, workers in England and Wales – and that means the vast majority of the people in E & W – are not robbing you. Capitalists rob us all, and capitalists run Westminster – and Brussels – and Holyrood. Our enemy is not the Union, but the European Union (aka Employers’ Union), that capitalist cartel that wants to break up all opposition to its rule.
