Excellent comments this morning. Toe rags read tow-rags. This was a piece of material tied to ropes hung over the side of the sailing ships. When the sailors required to defecate over the side of the ship, (where else could they ‘go’), they then hauled in the rag to complete their ablution, and threw it back into the sea to be cleansed. Hence the expression tow rag. A fairly apt description for some of our present politicians. Just sayin’.

I came across this and thought that it was interesting on a number of counts. Firstly why hasn’t this been shown on television, as an example on the BBC?
Secondly, imo, it’s another example of the Establishment wanting to suppress the fact that the Scots are at the forefront of many fields indeed.
And thirdly she’s calling for help to resolve a most hellish situation, but who will hear her if her request isn’t aired? Hopefully she herself will have contacts.
I’ve come across Sue Black on television previously in relation to the work that she had done in Kosova, as the UK’s lead forensic anthropologist, and the key role she played in the Cold case programmes, but I had no idea that she’d been involved in this amazing work (as shown on the video) dealing with cases from the Metropolitan Police, London, from across Europe and so on. The only research unit (Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at Dundee University) in the UK that’s doing so. Additionally I see now from wikipedia that it’s her department that’s ‘training the UK National Disaster Victim Identification (UK DVI) team for police and scientists in advanced mortuary practices.’
I see, too, that we are losing her, as she’s leaving Dundee University to become Pro Vice-Chancellor for Engagement at Lancaster University this month.

Thing is, Danny, the term is short for, “Nippie Sweetie”, and that is not an insult, especially for the leader of a political party seeking independence.

With luck, and not going with the first two speakers, I hope the BBC Scotland management have had their day and are on their way out of Scotland entirely.
If the organisation is to continue it should not be as, “The BBC”, nor be connected to the London management of the BBC. If government funded, it be funded by an independent Holyrood government and much more directly answerable to the people of Scotland and not answerable to the Government of Scotland – no matter what political shade that government becomes.
Politicians must be kept clear of a Scottish Public Service broadcaster.

But Ronnie declined on the grounds, I think I remember correctly, that he thought the film of the meeting would be manipulated in a way to suit the Establishment. He thought that BBC reps should come OUTSIDE to the protest and do an interview as they would do at any other event.

Which all indicates that Police Scotland, who obviously are, by their profession, an evidence based organisation have all the evidence required to prove beyond any doubt, that the YES movement have absolutely no desires to act in any way illegally.
I’d go as far as concluding that those two officers were there briefed to keep themselves aware that if there was any likelihood of trouble it would be there duty to protect the protesters from being attacked.
There has, at least to my knowledge, never been anything but good behaviour and no signs of aggressiveness by at any YES or AUOB events no matter what they were marching or gathering for.
For goodness sake even a match at Central Park, Cowdenbeath for a Blue Brazil home game has a bigger police presence and a smaller crowd.

Let’s just face it the BBC bods were never going to come out to speak to, or at, a protest about the Biased BBC.
The reason being they don’t have a defence that they aren’t biased that would hold up. They know they are guilty but intend to keep doing what they have always done and being what they have always been.

The man who offered the pow-wow was Ian Small, the one and only member of BBC management who had the baws to at least *try* to offer some kind of explanation for YouTubeGate. He did so on the Beattie Media Review but did it very poorly, whereupon he was comprehensively savaged by Eamonn O’Neill and Anna Burnside.
It was clear that Small had been completely blindsided by developments and had to make up segments of BBC policy on-the-hoof (as remarked upon by Rev Stu right here same day it happened) so his offer today was not likely to be accepted by anyone who wanted to talk to an organ-grinder in preference to the monkey. Is it too cynical to propose that that’s exactly why he made it?

Protestors have gathered outside BBC Scotland’s headquarters in Glasgow demonstrating against what they describe as “BBC bias”.
More than 200 people took part in the rally at Pacific Quay on Saturday.
Organisers said the BBC did not “represent the voices of the people of Scotland”.
A BBC Scotland spokesman said the leaders of the protest declined an offer to come inside and speak to senior managers at the organisation.

Grand thanks Cactus, knackered from the 3 day trip round Pitlochry up to Ullapool and down. Lot of foreign plates and people commenting on it. Lot of Belgians for some reason, including on my way back down, a convoy of 10-12 Belgian campers heading north. I think they’re on a spying mission, to buy houses here afer our Independence. Or checking out SNP branches. Not so many English as normal, I was a bit worried (English are around 50% of tourists), but then realised – it was the World Cup, and it’s always the same.

Here’s a question for the FM:
When is this Scot Govt – or any future Scottish Govt – likely to stop breaching the Human Rights Act 1998 / European Convention on Human Rights due to the omission of independent investigations into allegations of breaches of Article 2 and Article 3 of the Human Rights Act (HRA) made against public bodies, such as the Scottish NHS or Police Scotland etc ( that is required, even if it turns out the allegations made were false)?
Articles 2 and 3 are absolute rights, so breaches of these is very much more serious than the Supreme Court’s ruling on Article 8 made against the Scot Govt in the Named Person case.
The pro-Union MSM are already shooting at this open goal the Scottish Govt has gifted them. Expect more of it.
A real chance to discredit the whole SNP – and Indy movement – due to this clear failure of the Scottish Govt, because this is a true story. No need for SNP-bad dishonest propaganda, when there is this real glaring HRA abuse.
The FM/Scot Govt must act immediately to address this serious failure before the whole indy movement is (wrongly) blamed for this serious human rights failure, when it’s the FM and Scot Govt who are letting people down in this very serious issue.

It isn’t a law anywhere it is only a legal requirement to have a licence to receive live video broadcasts. What is against the law is watching live broadcasts without having a licence and that is because you need the government’s permission to watch live video broadcasts.
The law of coercion under Scots law is the equivalent to the English Law of Blackmail. i.e. forcing someone to do something against their will and usually for gain.
Coercion in Scotland takes it some steps further and the law of coercion in Scotland specifically states it even more specifically that, among other things, it is coercion to seek to force someone to do something, or part with money, under threats of taking legal action against them.
This is the same Scots law that prevents other than Police officers, or parking wardens, from clamping vehicles parked on private land in Scotland and demanding a fee to release the vehicle back to the owner of the vehicle.

This is where the BBC Licence fee contractors, (CAPITA), break the law of Scotland but not of the three country Kingdom of England. For every letter they send out. First of all the letter assumes that the occupier of premises watches live video broadcasts. Then it goes on to threaten them with legal action and up to £1,000 fines. and that’s the criminal offence of coercion in Scotland.
They are demanding the occupier must buy a TV licence even although they have no proof that there is even a TV or other live broadcast receiver, (i.e. mobile phone or computer), on the premises.
So they are saying the occupier is guilty of a criminal offence and only a court can do that legally. It is not a crime to own a TV and modern TVs are capable of not only receiving TV frequency broadcasts but they also have on-line and broadcast receivable radio station channels.
You plug in a telephone link for ADSL, an aerial for tv/radio channels, a cable TV line and one for ADSL on-line computer data. Not to mention they are Bluetooth capable.
So a viewer could by watching Netflex on-line for example or a film on cable or streaming a recording from a Bluetooth connected recorder or have a PVR connected to the tv set.
Yet these people are accusing people of criminally watching live TV and also demanding they buy a TV licence, (demanding money), by threatening legal action.
There is thus far more evidence they are guilty of criminal acts than someone with TV sets. It isn’t illegal to own a TV nor is it illegal to not tell the BBC or their agents anything because in spite of their claims that they are, “OFFICERS”, (with their implication being Officers of a law enforcement organisation), they are not – they rely upon a frightened person assuming that when they threaten to send Their, “Officers to Investigate”, that the occupier assumes them to be something like a Police Officer or an officer of a court like a Bailiff.
There is little doubt that CAPITA are scamming people and also stalking them with a barrage of threatening letters.
If a householder sticks up a notice saying, “No cold callers”, “No Hawkers”, or words to that effect CAPIA’s agents are even breaking the law if they come onto private property.
What’s more even if they do come onto a property it is against Scots law to interfere with personal privacy so NO investigations without a court search warrant.
Really speaking the only legal way they are going to get evidence for a conviction is if the occupier lets them into the house or admits to watching live broadcasts or is daft enough to have a TV showing a live broadcast that can be seen through a window. But even them offering evidence to a court of them looking through windows of a private dwelling to gain that evidence is against Scottish privacy of dwellings laws.
They are, plain and simple con-artists.

Seeing as it is quiet at this hour, a wee bit of OT. My father was headmaster in a rural primary school for many years until his retirement. In the early 60s, I can recall his receiving an official instruction that Scottish history, prior to 1707, was not to be taught in Scottish schools. Needless to say, this was like a red rag to a bull to him. Every child left that school with a more than ground knowledge of their heritage. He had a knack of making what some might think a dry subject onto something of great interest by encouraging questions to be asked. Many, if not all, are now True Scots.
Incidentally, he was aquainted with a couple of the patriots who repatriated our Stone. I believe he was given some information as to it’s whereabouts & told that this will not be revealed until Scotland is a rightfully free country again.

Aye! sandy, I had thought you might. My object was, like Ronnie at the BBC protest, to keep the subject on the boil and thus to give others the confidence to not be browbeaten by the BBC Licence enforcement mob when they turn up acting like a law enforcement squad.

And the answer is they didn’t need to give or not give their approval because the Treaty of Union stipulates that the two legal systems are forever legally independent of each other but Westminster from day one of the then new, “Parliament of the United Kingdom”, carried on and assumed itself to be the continuing parliament of the Kingdom of England and has illegally continued to do so today.
Which is the real problem that the Scottish Independence movement has to overcome. Before we can convince the entire European Union, or indeed the whole World’s governments and dictatorships, that the United Kingdom is a two partner union of two equally sovereign kingdoms we have to convince ourselves that it is the facts.
The United Kingdom is legally composed of only two equally sovereign kingdoms and the fact that one of those kingdoms has three included countries was always legally irrelevant but has been the way Westminster continued after 1 May 1707.
Westminster is not actually the legal parliament of either the country or the kingdom of England and it hasn’t legally been so since 30 April 1707.
Annent your father and his knack of making history a very interesting and vibrant subject. I was taught history at both primary and secondary level by a brother and sister respectively who also had that capacity.

It was an academic study that broke the local authority area results into constituency results using demographic data. No idea how accurate these estimates are but it claimed Bamff & Buchan (now Tory) voted leave by 54%.

They show a map which is by parliamentary seat. This shows swing to Leave or Remain, not majority. One of the yellow (>5% swing to Remain) must be one which has gone Leave to Remain.
Astonishingly, some Scottish Tory seats appear to have swung to Leave. That I don’t understand!
Still, it’s only modelling. 15000 UK voters, means a sample of ~1400 for Scotland, means only 25 voters per constituency! That is way too small for accuracy and conclusions.
My personal conclusion might be the whole modelling thing is bollocks.
However, I’d still love to know actual voting by constituency in EURef.

Someone at a university has calculated that Banff & Buchan voted leave. He used statistical analysis but it’s not described exactly what these were in any of the newspaper reports (he used census data and age plus presumably other criteria he decided upon). It is merely an estimate, but someone was keen to demonstrate not all Scotland voted remain. He is confident in his results but as the actual result data wasn’t released it is still just an estimate (it isn’t even based on polling people).
He claims it is accurate to within 1% but without comparing this to the actual result there is no way of proving it. So the claim can only be that he believes Banff & Buchan voted leave but can’t actually prove it.

There’s a hell of a lot of misinformation going around, both over Brexit and indy, but you can’t just airily dismiss the stats about voter preferences vs age. The facts are what they are.
You yourself have made a stab at explaining at least some of that effect, but that’s not enough. To prevail, we need to change attitudes and beliefs to make a difference, especially among those who not only are the least convinced, but are also are the most likely to turn out and vote.
Which is why gala’s point was at least a step forward. We really need to put the frighteners far more on older folk in particular, who depend disproportionately on public services like the SNHS.
But any and all suggestions for shifting opinion (as opposed to merely “explaining” it) are welcome.
The Labour Party in Scotland (or what actually remains of the Labour Party in Scotland) could be absolutely critical in our move forward. We know that a significant proportion of its support voted YES last time and polls are showing that that has increased so the increasingly invisible collection at Holyrood do not represent what is a very significant percentage of the Labour support on this issue.
The media however do not reference this anomaly and still use Labour as a unionist bloc. Without the continued unionist media support Labour in Scotland would evidently be the political irrelevance they actually now are (though another leader may be found for massive media promotion as the UK desperately tries all avenues to stop a slide to independence).
Obviously one waits for and prays from someone among them at Holyrood to grow a pair and try to move Labour in Scotland into its most natural and comfortable position – ie sovereignty for the people of Scotland – but there are enough significant and respected figures in the broader Labour movement for us to hope for an initiative that pulls Labour or much of it into the independence campaign.
I believe the present grubby Tory/Labour coalitions across Scotland are damaging both, but mostly Labour which has gathered support over the years as very specifically an anti Tory body and I suspect Labour’s position on lots of positions, particularly and anti SNP/independence position is very fragile indeed.
Pressure should be put on this weakness – but wisely – and I would look forward to the first recruits across the divide. When one reads Maxton and Hardie etc one understands what Labour in Scotland’s natural and most comfortable position is on the constitutional question.

How very true, but Labour in Scotland rely on Head Office contributions to keep them afloat, I used to be lumped in with Labour as I was a Union Member, I have never voted Labour since 1972, when I found out about children being sent to Canada and Australia because Britain did not want them, this practice went on under both Labour and Tories, the old pals together act. It will not be known until a ref, who are real Labour members and who are just Lumped in.

Great post and well said, as ever. I despise the Brit Nats adoration of the military and the bellicose rhetoric of politicians who send others to suffer and die in their stead.
Sad for the poor soldiers, as ever fighting wars for idiotic leaders, whose slogans for justifying invasions and occupations are as vapid as they are preposterous.A soldier fights for his comrades. There are very powerful moral obligations at work, those of kinship, regiment and loyalties. Soldiers the world over have never lifted a finger for country.
The job of a Scottish soldier in an Independent Scotland should not be to suffer and die, in our name. It should be to defend our country, to be a part of peace keeping forces when needed and to serve and protect the Kingdom of Scotland.
No more need for a Ministry of Defence, that true beacon of the Age of Empire with their fucking belief and self-belief commanding obeisance. No more cannon fodder because no Scottish Soldier’s life should be expendable.

Labour played such a big part in IndyRef1 – from fronting BetterTogether to wheeling out their ‘big guns’ for the coup de grâce.
Also, polls then were showing a likely Labour next government at WM, not Tory.
Too many Scots retain a ‘soft spot’ for Labour, giving them credibility they no longer deserve – even if they don’t always vote for them.
In IndyRef2 if Labour were to switch, split, or even adopt neutrality on the issue. It would make a huge difference.
The stick to beat Labour with has been deployed – they have lost many seats and their strangle hold on Scotland.
There is a carrot there for the taking too, though. As independence looks more likely, Labour (or at least a fraction) coming out a definite YES, would guarantee a presence and role in an independent Holyrood. That is something Labour Party folks need to consider.

All of Scotland is yellow for REMAIN and most of England is blue for LEAVE.
No doubt there is a desperate rear guard effort to peruade us that Scotland did not vote REMAIN. But that is how it was presented on the night. The BBC refers to “counting areas”. Changing the rules two years on is a bit transparent.

The Labour Party has always been infiltrated with people who should never have been allowed to join it it is supposed to represent the Ordinary working people yet how many of their MPs are or were working people the labour MPs should be miners bus drivers street sweepers etc.,not lawyers or doctors Etc., they keep this unfair society alive and change nothing Corbyn has said he will look at tax avoidance not put a stop to itand it would be simple to stop no more loop holes everyone pays tax under the same conditions no get out clauses none but of course he won’t do it up till now labour has betrayed all its founding principles they should hang their heads in shame if they ever had any
No region in Scotland that was used for the EU referendum voted leave, all other claims are pure speculation on the data to try and make a case that some places did. Well I’m sure if you make the sample small enough then you can find a house, street or even an area (if you selectively define it) that did vote leave. It is meaningless, Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain, much more so that staying in the UK, which was a clear and decisive win unionists claim.
Anyone looking for at least one clue towards the parlous state of the Labour Party in Scotland today need only look along the red leather benches of the House of Lords where recently rejected former MPs rest in comfort while awaiting offers of non-executive directorships in what remains of UK business.
To relieve the tedium of this they are entitled (?) to claim a generous attendance allowance

Or in Scotland where it has possibly been used for very much longer it could also be a corruption of the Gaelic, toruighe with similar pronunciation and means a robber or a thief. This is likely because the word can been used in a joking way “get back here ya wee toerag” to a misbehaving child.
An interesting thought is that even if every Leave voter in Scotland voted Remain instead, then that still would not have been enough to prevent the Leave vote winning.
If Scotland voted 100% remain we would still be dragged out of the EU by English votes.

I’ve explained, in depth, the real reasons who the an older demographic forms the unionist. (and indeed also the non-voters) of the political spectrum and it sure as hell isn’t due to anyone living long enough to be of the age group you wand to, “Put the frighteners into.”
It really is so simple as to be too obvious to be overlooked by sane people.
The Oh! So! Obvious! reason is that since even before there was a Treaty of Union, (since the so called Union of the Crowns perhaps), the established order (a.k.a. the establishment), has been the union, (and before the rise of the Scottish National Party to prominence), it has been the, “Established order”, of all the political parties while the independence movements such as SNP, Sinn Fein and Plaid Cymru were simply fringe parties.
Thus as the independence movement was growing there has to be a corresponding shrinking in the established order. Thus demographic has to be that the Established order will be increasingly more aged and the indy movement less elderly.
You are confusing the cause with the result. When the demographic reaches the point where the indy movement has a majority then it simple means that the new order is ready to overtake the old order but that does not take account of the do not vote demographic.
I’ll put that in a way even you should understand – People are not unionists because they are getting older they are unionists because the norm was unionist until the present time. So the movement is from the old norm until the new norm is independence.
If this were not the case there are a great many, Alert Wingers”, who would be becoming suddenly unionists because they have suddenly reached that elusive special age you imagine they will wake up on their birthday as a unionist.
It is cause and effect and you confuse the two. By putting the cart before the horse will only result in the horse attempting to bolt and crashing into the cart that is before them and you sure as hell will only alienate older unionists if you attempt to frighten the shit out of them.
Trust me on this – do you imagine I’m going to take fright and I’m an octogenarian who has fought against the union my entire life.

We should never forget that three Labour ex provosts of Glasgow came out very publicly for YES at the referendum.
The road is clear,the door is open and I don’t think it would take an awful lot to get most of Labour across (except for the self-serving cadre that the media know all too well).
