Better Together my arse!

as a TV celebrity might say 🙂

U, R, Haverinweeman

Any chance of some facts to support this?
Of course Uncle Sally’s Big Oil Bonanza means you’ll all be filthy rich in an indy Scotland.
Too often do we see numbers allegedly quoted from the Institute for Fiscal Studies and yet nowhere on their entire website can the figure £1,800 be searched.
Please provide direct link to article, thanks.

Bingo Wings Over Scotland

What we left out: vote no and you might not be in the EU for much longer. There is a way to ensure that doesn’t happen…

HandandShrimp

Rev

I think it is some sort of natural law. Any figure that the BBC produces that supports Better Together is sacrosanct and that any figure that doesn’t is a fabrication of those evil Trotskyites at the BBC.

At least I think that is how it works.

Alan Macd

Rev,
Try bare in mind the fact that the  UKIP are irrelevent. personally i can see the benefits of being outside the EU but  i balance that with the rewards of being a EU citizen.
Regardless, the least amount of coverage we give these fuckers, the better.
Le Duràchdan.

Jeannie

I might have this wrong, but my understanding is that the reason the UK got a rebate from the EU was that it gave up some regional assistance, so money that used to go directly to the regions of the UK now go directly to Westminster, to be distributed as they see fit.  It was never a rebate in the first place.  If we become independent but remain within the EU, we may not have the supposed “rebate” but could get the full amount of regional assistance back, so wouldn’t be any worse off.
But if we vote No, we’re stuck with the loss of some regional assistance as well as austerity cuts.  No?

Erchie

I am sure I read soemthing somewhere, possibly by a Hitchens, that Westminster enforces not only EU directives, but white papers just put out for discussion, to a degree of control far over and above what the EU finally adopt.

And that the UK is very bad at “Match funding” regional assistance, so there is EU money that could be used for infrastructure and employment projects that does not get claimed

Driving to Prestwick this morning, there was a big shiny silver 4X4 right behind me, felt like he was getting a wee bit too close at times, but had to slow for the roundabout – as we neared it he shifted to inside lane, drew level, and started giving it thumbs-up, big smiles, then thumbing-back at the rear of his own car, then pointing at rear of mine – then I had to slow, he went on. That’s when I saw the ‘Yes’ stickers on his rear window. I’d forgotten all about mine – have three: one on the back, and one on each of the wee triangular windows at the back.

If you’ve got any stickers, please get them on the car – what a buzz it was, that wee show of solidarity, and all the more welcome for being unexpected. There’s a lot more of us than ever show it, and it’s high-time we did.

(Ever seen a BT car sticker? Do such things even exist?)

Tattie-boggle

O/T Be warned .
I came across this little gem read at your own peril but strangely nothing new we’re better together. just because right.

Funny you mentioning that Ian, we regularly get flashed and waved at whenever we’re out in our car by folks we have never met. We have only come to one, startlingly obvious conclusion, they are all supporters of independence and are flashing us etc because of the stickers we have have on the hood, each door and tail gate of our car.
I can only second your statement Ian, anyone with YES Scotland stickers get them on your cars there are loads of folks out there who are happy to show you their support! 😆

Doug Daniel

Arbroath – either that or you’ve got a flat tyre!

Hmmm, £135 or £1,800? A no-brainer, surely?

ianbrotherhood

@Tattie-Boggle-
Thanks for that link.
It’s an oddity: badly-written, with no conviction; no clear aim, and limp humour; no identifiable author; bizarre site ‘decor’, clearly aimed at ‘women’.
Having said that – if it was a pamphlet? Orwell would’ve kept it.

Arbroath 1320

A flat tyre on the car we drive Doug?
ha ha surely not we don’t pay any attention to the “drive a pokey wee 1 litre engine car and save the planet” type of car you know, ours is a big 4 X 4 and drives over EVERYTHING no questions asked. 😆
I must admit that the £135 or £1,800 question is really quite a stinker of a question. I mean do we take the £135 and remain serfs to multi millionaires in Westminster or do we take the £1,800 and become serfs to NO ONE?
Are we really ready to become our own Lord’s and Masters?
Can we really handle all the pressure of running our own country whilst pocketing £1,800?
Can we really handle the sole responsibility of receiving £1,800?

Richie

@Ian
I’ve only once seen a better together car sticker. At a Yes Scotland meeting in Aboyne. Some bitters came along to try and wind up Blair Jenkins. One of the idiots asked him
“If Scotland becomes independent, will you be giving back your O.B.E.?”

CameronB

Re. the link Tattie-boggle posted. you get a better idea of the blogger’s perspective, if you read a few of their other posts. For example, with regards to Syria, the blogger is apparently calling for a ‘humanitarian intervention’, a la Libya. What is it with some people? Are they ill-informed or are they simply malicious?

KOF

@ianbrotherhood
“(Ever seen a BT car sticker? Do such things even exist?)”
I saw one a car last month, near Edinburgh. It wasn’t alone, the car had a “Obama’s Wolves”/”Obama’s Wolf (?) sticker on it too. Considering who is doing stuff for the BT lot, I found it rather interesting indeed.

ianbrotherhood

I’ll have to start looking out for BT stickers, can’t imagine what they look like.

FWIW, if you do get a ‘Yes’ sticker, try and make sure it’s a blue one – the ‘white’ are really quite difficult to make-out, even at relatively close quarters.

Jiggsbro

What is it with some people? Are they ill-informed or are they simply malicious?

Why waste time and effort getting to grips with the facts when you can have an opinion without them? Everyone’s entitled to an opinion, which means all opinions are equal. Except efficient opinions reached without knowledge or thought, which are more equal than opinions people have wasted thinking time on. In a democracy, the favourite opinion wins and people like nice, simple opinions, not complicated opinions full of facts and logic.

Colin Duffy

Ok, so there`s the poxy wee rebate we supposedly enjoy.
It`s even less than the license fee that anyone in their right mind would refuse to pay but what is the cost of remaining in the UK to the average family compared to remaining EU members in an independent Scotland?
We used to hear these numbers but not for a while now.
Also, are we not getting bogged down in arguments of the Butt er The gether mob`s making?
How hard can it be to show up the con of Better Together? Really.

Jamie Arriere

I thought the rebate had something to do with the UK having a relatively smaller agriculture industry, and therefore less likely to benefit under the CAP which makes up most of the EU budget – because we get less in CAP subsidy, the concession of a rebate on our EU contributions was made. I think the rest of the EU are keen to end it if and when it comes to renegotiate.

Cymru Rydd

O.T:  Just to let our Scottish friends know that Plaid Cymru( the national party of Wales) have just won a resounding victory in a by-election for the Welsh Senedd on Ynys Mon( Isle of Anglesey).
Plaid’s candidate, Rhun ap Iorwerth, won an amazing 58% of the vote, with a majority of over 9,000 votes. Welsh Labour( who are in power in Wales) saw their vote collapse by  a huge 50%!.
This will be a huge fillip for Plaid Cymru as the party aims to be the largest party in the Senedd after the Welsh Elections in 2016. As we look enviously northwards at your opportunity to vote for freedom next year, let’s hope that we are not all that far behind!

Patrick Roden

@ Cymru Rydd,
fantastic news my friend 😉

Gordon Bain

I was following a Discovery the other day which had two stickers in the rear window. One said ‘UKOK’ and the other said ‘Friend of the Union’. I mentally shot him off the road with my built-in rockets.

themadmurph

@ianbrotherhood
the wee triangular windows at the back.
For future reference, they are called quarter lights 🙂

Just in case you are running out of space on twitter!!

Macart

@Cymru Rydd

Cracking result. 🙂

Vronksy

Being flashed by other cars: I once had the idea of putting one of those stickers on my back screen that says ‘How’s my driving?’  followed by a telephone number.  Except I would take out an 0800 number, and if you knew my driving you’d realise I’d make a fortune.

I wouldn’t have wasted ammunition I would have got in front of him and used the oil slick button and watched him career helplessly into a ditch 😉

Roll_On_2014

@Cymru Rydd

Aye fantastic result!

Keep the buggers on the run.

Just think of it… first Scotland… then Wales, Westmidden will only be left with the flag waving fanatics in NI. I wonder how long they will keep them after we are gone.

john king

travelling south in next few days , I wish I had an ejector seat button 🙁
only kidding, we cant wait 🙂

john king

roll on 2014

I call in an air strike.  I love the smell of napalm in the morning rush-hour traffic.

scottish_skier

@Cymru Rydd
Congratulations. Great result.

John King
Watching Swansea hammer Malmo on TV last night I couldn’t understand why a very large Union Jack was prominently displayed in the crowd. Seemed strange—Welsh team playing Swedish team.
Great result for Plaid Cymru.

U, R, Haverinweeman

To come back to the original query, and also answering Rev: where does the 1,800 come from?
The facebook page for WoS directed me here for data but I only see the original post.

HandandShrimp

I have captured McDougall and Co singing the BT company song

HandandShrimp

It looks like UKIP took a few Labour votes in Wales too. The notion that UKIP might split the Tory vote and help Labour is perhaps a misplaced one.

Marcia

I see we someone of the thread who wants to be spoon fed and cannot do any research.

Tattie-boggle

HandandShrimp
I have tears streaming down my face. I have not seen or heard that in years I used to sing that to the less active who I worked with.

U, R, Haverinweeman

Marcia: no, someone who calls quoters on all these magically quotable and yet completely undiscoverable numbers allegedly from the IFS.
Both Better Together and Bitter Apart are guilty of it. Those of us looking further on the IFS site might find tons of ammo for both sides but it’s nonsense as stand alone argument for either case.
How’s that smoking in your pipe?

Robert Kerr

@U, R, Haverinweeman.
I find “Bitter Apart” rather childish.
Troll ?
Never mind.
Hail Alba

Marcia

U, R, Haverinweeman

So why haven’t you phoned or emailed the BBC who provided the information from IFS to satisfy your enquiring mind? Are you accusing the BBC of lying? I would have asked for a copy of the full report by now.

Did you actually click on the link?

HandandShrimp

Both Better Together and Bitter Apart are guilty of it

UR

The fact that you only used a joke varient for one of the above shows which side of the bread you are buttering. If you don’t like the £1,800 figure take it up with the BBC. However as your Google is apparently broken here is another link.

link to thisismoney.co.uk

James Kay

I wondered if the required information was hidden away somewhere so deeply that it would be hard to find, so I Guddled for:

IFS £1800

and I instantly got enough references to keep me in reading material for some considerable time. If I were to disagree with the use of the figure in the graphic at the top of this article, then I shold girn to whoever wrote those articles, not this one!

Dorothy Devine

Well done wee Wales!
And you have a head start with one of the best flags in the world and you are not represented in the union flag!

Dal Riata

Doncha just lurve certain numbers of those who don’t want Scotland to be independent! Why, they’re so nice, welcoming, friendly, smart and, of couse – “How’s that smoking in your pipe?” – soooo funny, doncha know!

John Lyons

U R Haverinweeman.

I agree with you.

Why don’t you start a neutral Facebook page of your own for the don’t knows and never put anything from either side on it, but only ever put information from reliable sources like Yougov.org.

This is something I’d like to do, but as an SNP member and a firm Yes supporter, it’d be pointless as I’d immediately be smeared in a manner similar to the way LFI are at the moment. If you aren’t technically savvy I’ll offer my services to admin the page but only ever put up what you want the page to say.

What do you say Fella?

Murray McCallum

I think everyone can think about whether they got a cheque for £135 from Westminster / EU.

As they scrabble through their personal admin, they may come across 20% VAT, zero / minimal pay rises (or even pay cuts), bedroom tax, reduction / removal of disability allowance, and frozen child benefit to name a few.

U, R, Haverinweeman

Well done, HandandShrimp, thanks. Just what I wanted.  🙂
In case you never thought it through, Better Together and Bitter Apart are actually the same side, laddo. So much for buttered bread, eh? Lol! My mistake, should have read Bitter Together and Bitter Apart.
James Kay: Exactly my point, there are millions and I only wanted the relevant one.
Dal Riada: as you sow, so shall ye reap, no? But it was a typo, as explained above.
What I do wonder: why do the Yes Vote gang contend that Bitter Together is a witty or appropriate name for the Better Together gang?
They aren’t Bitter about being Together, in fact the exact opposite. Bitter Together would describe the Yes vote lot, Bitter Apart would work for the Unionists, surely?

U, R, Haverinweeman

@John Lyons: you’re a gentleman and a scholar, if I had the time I’d be in there like a dug eating beetroot.
There are too few of us trying to find that fundamental swing point, or that over-riding argument-carrier, it’d be great to help others reach it too.
