Wings Over Scotland

It happened here

Posted on February 09, 2011 by

Does anyone recognise these two fine figures of chaps puzzling over how to deal with their recycling backlog? You know them well.

If you can't work it out from the plentiful clues found in the pic, click below to reveal the SHOCKING TRUTH!

It's Mario and Luigi, of course. I was tooling around earlier today doing a bit of work and I happened to stumble across the ad below in an old issue of Computer & Video Games (January 1984, to be precise). Have a look at the page (click to embiggen) and see if you can spot the other odd thing about it.

I'll give you a clue: it's a missing word.

No?

Give up?

It's "Nintendo".

Okay, if you peer at the drawing you can make it out on the case of the handheld, but isn't it odd that it didn't merit a mention anywhere in the text, or even the small-print credits at the bottom? How might the world of gaming have looked today if British people had stayed in charge of drawing the Bros?

Funny how times change.

Ah, it's because they were imported to the UK market by a company called Computer Games Limited (hence the CGL logo bottom left). Some more info here: link to handheldmuseum.com

They look more like Morshu the shopkeeper from the CDI Zelda games (and Youtube poop) than either Mario or Luigi.

I had Galaxy Invader 1000 for Christmas when it came out, and my brother got Puck Monster. Easily amused we were, back then.

  4. AFMG says:

Mario and Luigi seem more like a realistic version of the Atari 2600 VCS box of the Mario Bros. game.

    Did that make sense?
