Nailed it!

Macart

Nailed it Chris.

@jimnarlene

Snap!

Charlie talks tae Plants, who knew lol. Great cartoon Chris.

[…] Cultivating terror […]

steveasaneilean

Spot on – the epitome of a picture painting a thousand words

alexicon

You will not see this type of poignant sketch from any war loving unionist press.
Spot on Chris.

heedtracker

The more things change… The horror last week was watching pro war Westminster red/blue tories clapping and cheering for more war.

Iain

That’s a very nice drawing (as well as a vg cartoon obvs!).

Hoss Mackintosh

Great cartoon Chris.

This may have been posted already but still worth posting again if you have not seen it.

A very good interview of John Pilger on the creators of ISIS and the rise of Government propaganda…

link to 21stcenturywire.com

Well worth watching – a true journalist – which is something of a novelty these days.

Richardinho

Spot on and beautifully drawn as well.

call me dave

Doesn’t need words to get the message across.

I see CMD’s nice suit and shirt cuffs there as his hands pour on the Tory solution. Whot! No Scottish planes? 🙁

SNP x 2

Clootie

…unfortunately a very accurate picture of the future 🙁

donald anderson

Wot about Labour’s Red Roses?

The Man in the Jar

Sadly accurate cartoon Chris.

Like I commented before. Thatcher had her war and Blair had his war. You can’t be a “proper” Prime Minister without a war to remember you by. I mean Major and Brown who ever mentions them these days? 😉

And yet millions are taken in by their rhetoric. A right bunch of UKOK suckers!

ronnie anderson

Ah ken ah manny that kin get a good deal on Volcanic Rock Fertilizer ,(special discount fur Wingers only).

gerry parker

Great cartoon Chris.

Heedtracker – good to see the convention of clapping is becoming acceptable in the house of commons.

Hope the speaker is taking note.

Skintybroko

Spot on Chris, and it starts at home. The government and their better together partners with their austerity policies breed discontent and provide the catalyst for radicalisation. Rather than going to war the money would be far better spent creating jobs and giving people hope. SNP all the way in May.

Lollysmum

Sad but accurate 🙁
Thanks Chris

dakk

Very nice and subtle imagery. Thanks Chris.

Grouse Beater

England is essentially a socialist country, and as such its people are international in outlook – that is, they wish to keep power and ownership of:

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Anguilla, the British Antarctic Territory, Bermuda, the British Indian Ocean Territory, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, St Helena and Dependencies (Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha), the Turks and Caicos Islands, Pitcairn Island, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and the Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus.

Grouse Beater

… and the Channel Islands, and Sark, and the Isle of Man, and ..

Grouse Beater

Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of 16 countries – the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. She does not rule in any of them but acts as a figurehead head of state. They are all completely self-governing and free to reject the monarchy and become republics at any time if they wish, but they haven’t decided to. There was a referendum in Australia about that in 1999, and 55% of voters voted to keep the Queen.

55%? What a coincidence.

Scot Finlayson

Are they the hand`s of Hilary Benn?

Wonderful artwork, are you doing a Cairnstoon calander ?

heedtracker

Heedtracker – good to see the convention of clapping is becoming acceptable in the house of commons

Watching them all cheering was just jaw dropping horror in action. As was the way the BBC war propaganda covered it all up. Too much bloodlust, bad for moral?

Another rancid The Graun boost for red tories in their Scotland region. Usual Bettertogether creep out from Graun shysters but oddly enough Scotland’s entirely left out of their UKOK wars in hot places and ofcourse, Scotland currently their nuclear weapons dump nary a mention. Funny that.

WoS gets a great The Graun kicking too. They don’t like it when you talk back, our unionist warmonger chums.

“People are still scared to declare that they’re a Labour supporter,” … “And the fact that the SNP didn’t condemn that until very late on didn’t help.”

This is another aspect of Scottish politics that sometimes gives it an unpleasantly macho, downright nasty flavour. One pro-independence blogger recently tweeted the hope that “an aeroplane delivering dirty needles” might crash into Labour’s solitary Westminster MP. You need only have a look at Kezia Dugdale’s Twitter feed, on which even her laying of flowers at the French consulate after the massacre in Paris was met with a political sneer (“Dugdale does not – and never will – speak for the Scottish people”) to get a sense that even if this behaviour is restricted to a tiny minority, it still sometimes sits on the edges of Scottish politics like an unwanted drunk at a party.

Not voting SLabour? you’re a violent drunk at the UKOK party with a downright nasty flavour.

SNP X 2 next May, sober.

Meindevon

My late father was in the RAF and, at risk of offending myself, I am sure he would be ‘burling in his grave’ at their deployment in Syria.

Chris Cairns

Thanks everyone.
I should just mention a lovely guy called Adam Zyglis, staff cartoonist on The Buffalo News in the States. I came up with this idea a couple of days ago and thought it apt … but also, perhaps, a bit obvious. So, as we do, I did a check around to see if anyone had already done it.
Not here and now, but two years ago, re the Iraq War, Adam had done something similar. So I wrote to him to let him know that, if he ever did come across this image (which I hadn’t drawn yet) he should know I hadn’t nicked it! Great minds (says I, buttering him up) really do sometimes think alike.
Anyway he was entirely cool about it and has in fact invited me to the annual get-together of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists next year. I think that would qualify as work rather than a holiday. Wonder if the Rev would pay my expenses …

Finlay Mair

Benn is a plant and we’re paying the Bill… and I think the little house knew something about it! Don’t you?

Bob Mack

Incisive, accurate, chilling, but most of all brilliant.

The words terrorist and fertiliser have combined before to create havoc.

heedtracker

Wonder if the Rev would pay my expenses …

Two words Chris!

Crowd funding:D

Richardinho

I don’t if anyone else noticed that Cameron talked about ISIS ‘inspired’ attacks in the UK?

In other words you could turn Syria into a mirror of glass and people could still be ‘inspired’ by ISIS to launch such attacks.

So by his own words, launching a war against ISIS in Syria is going to be ineffective against the real problem.

The real problem is that there are such things as Islamic militants and as long we attack them there is a likelihood that they will attack us.

Grouse Beater

The carnivorous ‘plant’ looks awfully like a Triffid!

Here’s my weekend offering: link to wp.me

Iain More

Maybe the can should be orange? I think Vietnam is still suffering the legacy of being sprayed by Agent Orange? Nothing changes!

X_Sticks

@Chris Cairns

“Wonder if the Rev would pay my expenses …”

I daresay the wingers wouldn’t be adverse to a wee crowdfunder to at least get you there. It would be my pleasure to contribute as a thank you for all the laughs and poignant moments you have given us all.

Saturday mornings wouldn’t be the same without the Cairnstoon. And who is that Moodie bloke, anyway? 😉

Angra Mainyu

Yes, Chris Cairns, I’m not a great fan of cartoons, or poetry for that matter, but I must admit that this one is really a cracker. I think it’s your best yet. Well done that man.

I look at the Middle East and other areas of the world right now and I wonder if the post 1945 neo-colonialist mechanisms of control and manipulation are finally unraveling and failing.

Neo-colonialism, with its emphasis on friendly client States and indirect levers (supporting one party over another, coups, arms supply, etc.), when you think about it, always hinged on the effectiveness of local players doing what we wanted and expected of them. They don’t seem to be doing that nowadays.

The Palestinian Authority is a good example of that failure; they were simply unable to keep a lid on things as Israel wanted. The same unraveling is taking place in Iraq right now; on paper it should have been a simple thing to leave a brutal pro-western dictatorship after we got rid of Saddam, but it hasn’t happened. Afghanistsn is yet another example; they can’t find any locals to do their bidding which is really what neo-colonialism depends on.

It wouldn’t surprise me to hear someone clever outline how this collapse of confidence in the functioning of neo-colonial structures might explain the unending volatility we see in the stock markets and global economy these days. On a more profound global zeitgeist level, it might also explain the frightening uncertainties of the world we live in right now.

Anyway, given that the post war system is unravelling, and I think it definitely is, it looks like we are heading back towards a boots-on-the-ground 19th century sort of imperialism. Rather than leaving governments behind, the tendency now seems to be to leave military bases behind. It’s quite dire.

cearc

Another one right to the point Chris.

As for, “Wonder if the Rev would pay my expenses …”. One of the downsides of being freelance is sorting your own get-together!

at2:13pm

You said “I daresay the wingers wouldn’t be adverse to a wee crowdfunder to at least get you there.”

Nobody’s mentioning anything about bringing you back! 😉

Clarinda

Tragically apt cartoon.

I would have put thick gardening gloves on the ‘waterer’ – as these types don’t like getting their own hands dirty.

Free Scotland

Speaking in the house of commons the other day, Cameron claimed that “in a year and three months of British air strikes in Iraq there have been no reports of civilian casualties”.

Try removing “reports of” from that last line. Not quite the same, is it?

On the first day of the bombing in Syria, Captain Richard Davies of the RAF said: “In over 400 air strikes that the RAF has carried out in Iraq, we have had absolutely no civilian casualties reported.”

Try removing the word “reported” from that last line. Not quite the same, is it?

Note to Self: switch propaganda radar to “PERMANENTLY ON.”

X_Sticks

@TMitJ

Shhhhh…you’ll blow the plan 😀

Craig P

Bravo, Chris.

Valerie

Brilliant, Chris, especially in its originality.

Originality is sadly lacking in this world. This is for those asking for footage of the bombing runs. I said I thought that oil field was defunct.

@Chris
‘And these are some seeds we sowed earlier.’

Check out where the AAEC is to be held. If there’s a golf course for you and chinese takeaway for him, take the Rev with you. He needs to have a holiday.

As it happens I have a fish tank on my sitting room bay-window sill. It does not contain fish but has three types of carnivorous plants. It looks rather like Chris has used it as the model for his cartoon.

No I’m not just a warped person. I live within a few hundred yards of Loch Ore – near the western entrance to Lochore Country Park.

In warmer weather I have swallows nesting under my cottage’s eaves and the swallows put on wonderful flying displays flying right up under the eaves gorging on the hosts of midges. I assumed that these midges are due to me living near the Loch.

However, in Winter I was getting plagued by midges coming into the cottage. So I came up with the idea of the fish tank full of insect eating plants.

It has an auto watering system and a time switched lighting systems. I now get little bother from the midges in Winter. The plants eat them and save a fortune in fly spray too.

I’m not sure if there is method in my madness or madness in my method but the idea has been working very well now for several years.

Stuart

Er nonsense, the RAF bombed the crap out of Nazi Germany in WW2, I don’t recall an explosion in the membership of Fascist movements as a result.

However inconveniently for Nationalists, just two years ago, Alex Salmond went on record to say he would support bombing Syria, if Scotland was independent.

So what changed?

galamcennalath

Davy, Davy, quite crazy,
How does your garden grow?
With oil wells, and dodgy smells,
And Daish nutters all in a row.

manandboy

In your hand, Chris, the pen is certainly mightier than the sword. Brilliantly done – yet again.

Angra Mainyu

Stuart, might I suggest you read the articles you link to in support of the misleading junk you type;

“The First Minister said Scottish MPs at Westminster backed the possibility of action through the UN – if the use of chemical weapons had been proved by weapons inspectors…”

Through the UN? Chemical weapons proven to have been used, i.e. By Syria?

The chemical weapons lie was exposed by none other than Porton Down who established beyond doubt that it did not come from Syrian stockpiles. The story behind that — or how they came to know this — is interesting.

As you know, it isn’t the case that the UN has given a clear mandate to attack Syria either.

Junk.

Bill McLean

Germany was bombed for about 5 years. The MIddle East has been meddled with and robbed by Britain for over one hundred! Odd that you didn’t provide the entire quote from the Scotsman article!

Thepnr

@Grouse Beater

I’m guessing the cartoon was inspired by “The Day of the Triffids”.

The narrative begins with Bill Masen in hospital, his eyes bandaged after having been splashed with triffid poison…

After unbandaging his eyes, he wanders through an anarchic London full of blind inhabitants…

Sounds about right, Cheers Chris 🙂

Nana

Great cartoon Chris. Imagine my surprise last week on my birthday to receive your book of toons which is just fabulous. Luckily my hints for a perfect birthday gift fell on fertile ground this year!

Seriously folks what a wonderful book it is and with Christmas just around the corner….

Little shop of Horrors:

“Feed me!”

Jamie

So we had/have al Qaeda, we have Daesh what next I wonder? How much worse and brutal can the next bunch of alienated folk from the east be? Maybe that is what Cameron and Obama really want to find out I mean after all did no one hear, missile sales are going through the roof the UK alone spending 1 million per sortie at 4 sorties a day with it being upped to 8 soon. Good time to sell missiles, bad time to be a Syrian civilian. The U.K. stinks, it really is a cess pit when it comes to morality.

bugsbunny

Donald Anderson@1.15 asks, “Wot about Labour’s Red Roses?”

Well like all Roses they need to be feed by a constant supply of putrid shit. This comes from the Daily Record and certain bloggers.

And why is the Scottish Labour Party like the Red Rose Donald?
Like the Red Rose, it looks nice on top, but underneath are a load of pricks!

Stephen,

bugsbunny

The Man in the Jar@1.17 says, “What about Major and Brown?”

Well it’s true that Thatcher had the Falklands and Blair had Iraq/Afghanistan, but Major had the Gulf War and Brown had the War against Scottish Democracy and Freedom.

Stephen.

DerekM

spot on the ball as usual Chris.

@ Stuart

Did the doctor renew your medication Stuart or is it a congenital problem that you take half a statement and try to pan it off as the full statement,or do you just like talking pish boy.

bugsbunny

DerekM,

He’s just talking pish. As per usual.

Stephen.

Ghillie

Now that would make a brilliant front page for The National Chris!
