Wings Over Scotland

A thing that isn’t true

Posted on July 08, 2014 by

To be honest, readers, when we’re busy, which is always, we have a tendency to stop reading newspaper stories by the time they get to the quote from a “Better Together” or UK government spokesman. It’s not exactly tricky to predict what they’re going to say, and in the case of the former it’ll usually be some boorish, juvenile sneer that just makes us depressed.

alistaircarmichael25

But last night we happened to get all the way to the end of a Scotsman article (we were surprised too), and noticed something that was a more blatant lie than usual.

It was a piece on the £300,000 of unpublished polling that Westminster has done on the referendum but doesn’t think the taxpayers who paid for it have any right to know the results of. And the Secretary of State for Portsmouth, Alistair Carmichael, had a new excuse lined up.

“You know the rules as well as I do on publication of polling information, if you publish any of it you publish all of it. We’ve published none of it, we will continue to do so. That was work that was done to inform Government policy.”

The problem is, we’ve commissioned several opinion polls and we DO know the rules, and they’re not what Mr Carmichael claims they are.

What the British Polling Council stipulates as a condition of membership is that if you release the result of any particular question, you have to release all of the data for that one question within 48 hours.

So if, for example, you’ve polled the referendum question and you’ve let it be known that the results were 48% Yes 52% No, you have to release the full breakdown of those figures – what the percentages were for men and women, what they were for SNP, Labour, Tory and Lib Dem voters, for the various age groups and so on.

What you DON’T have to do is release the results for any other questions you asked in that poll. If you asked the referendum question and also asked people if they thought Alistair Carmichael looked like Bungle from Rainbow in an ill-fitting suit, you DON’T have to release the results from that question just because you released the ones from the referendum question.

Nobody would ever commission opinion polls if releasing ANY data meant you had to release ALL the data. If you ask 10 questions and don’t like the result from two of them, you’re perfectly at liberty only to publish the results of the other eight.

Alistair Carmichael is either deliberately not telling the truth – and his comments were actually made before a Holyrood committee, so that’d be quite a serious matter – or he’s a bumbling oaf who doesn’t have the remotest clue what he’s doing. (It could, we must acknowledge, be both.)

As usual, readers can come to their own conclusion.

I am beginning to think that this Carmichael man is not obfuscating or being particularly devious.

He just cannot remember what his Spad / Political Adviser / Spin Doctor has told him.

He needs 10 brain proteins assayed.

Turnip_ghost

I’m thinking he just doesn’t have a clue. Simple. Like him.

Unless, of course, someone had the opportunity to ask him again and see what his response would be.

Drew

“Bumbling oaf” doesn’t begin to describe him

ferrymckenzie

I read this overnight in someone’s blog – your erudite friend the Peat Worrier perhaps. I hadn’t realised it was from a Scotsman article, nor was I aware of the applicable law. This is indeed a serious issue, notwithstanding the Portsmouth islander’s original profession. Baited breath… Thanks again

kendomacaroonbar

He’s a VERY silly man.

Mike

If there is irrefutable evidence that he lied to an official committee then you should pass the evidence to the appropriate authority and lets watch the piece of excrement squirm.

Murray McCallum

I’m glad Alistair has found happiness and a sense of achievement by demonstrating that he can hold a biscuit to his mouth with his left hand while doing something different with his right hand.

Multi-skilling right there.

Dan Huil

“Bumbling oaf”? At the end of Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” Mr Bumble has become destitute and is forced to live in the same workhouse where he used to lord it over others.
Poetic justice. Prosaic too, I hope.

Rosa Alba Macdonald

I wrote an email to my Lib Dem knighted MP about the polls and sharing the data. No reply.

Another blatant ukok liar. How many of these liars are going to strut their stuff before polling day but the hootsman is probably the worst out there, just behind the BBC in Scotland.

WHAT IS TRUE IS TRUE FOR ALL

I changed just 2 words in the following quote. Can you spot them?

“THE STORY THAT WILL BE TOLD INSIDE THE WALLS… IS THE STORY NOT ONLY OF A PARLIAMENT BUT OF A MOVEMENT- A DETERMINED MOVEMENT DEDICATED TO THE GREATNESS OF SCOTLAND AND FAITH IN ITS BEDROCK TRADITIONS: IN THE ESSENTIAL GOODNESS OF ITS PEOPLE: IN THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDNESS OF ITS INSTITUTIONS AND, YES, FAITH IN OUR VERY ESSENSE AS A NATION”

The words were ‘PRESIDENCY’ for PARLIAMENT and ‘AMERICA’ for SCOTLAND.
Quoted from a plaque in the Reagan Library.

No no no...yes

Carmichael is a liability, which is great for the Yes cause.

I’m sure when the Scottish Govt read this they will invite him to clarify his statement.

Carmichael, along with Danny Alexander and Ali Darling are all proud Scots that are being used by the Tories as the fall Guys. Why is there no leading female in Better Together?

Ken MacColl

Surely by now it has been firmly established that the LIE is the default position of the NO campaign, continuing a noble British Government tradition along with deceit and withheld information.
When all the established UK parties close ranks and go along with this how can we be surprised at the can of worms that emerges from accounts of Expenses Fiddles, where six patsies were jailed, Telephone Tapping, where the tabloid press consider themselves exonerated, and the latest sordid tales coming to light about child molestation? Does anyone seriously believe that any one other than the gross but safely deceased, Sir Cyril Smith will end up in the dock?

BrianW

I’m just waiting for him to do that thing that kids do.

“We know something that you don’t know..na, na, na, na, na..”

Stevie

‘Bruiser’ Carmichael (don’t laugh) is in the bumbling oaf category but by virtue of his desire to pass off the BritNat lies and spiel as facts shows he’s a sneaky little sht too. So, both.

Stevie

Why am I on moderation?

yerkitbreeks

Ah, rules and assertions, all very spoiling for us simpletons.

There are some useful clarifications about, such as this new one on European accession for Scotland :

In response to “no no no … yes”, I suppose Maggie Sterrheid Rammy Curran could possibly be counted as a “leading” female Labour politician on the NO side. No matter how relentlessly negative her rhetoric is, she is after all the “Shadow Scottish Secretary”.

mogabee

Ali has been at Westminster long enough so should know the rules, he is either “mistaken” or thinks he can pull the wool over the “wee pretendy parliament”.

Bugger (the Panda)

Oh, I see what you mean.

Shall we see him in the dock with Andy Coulson, after all perjury is considered seriously. Well maybe not by our well protected politicians.

Molly

Last year I attended the Festival of politics and someone remarked in the defence debate Jim Murphy was not even prepared. It was all done on the hoof

Alistair Carmichael gives the impression he does the same, basically makes it up as he goes along, safe in the knowledge no media will give what he says any scrutiny.

What contempt for the public and more so if you vote No based on stuff made up on the spur of the moment.

Stevie

I donated to this site and my comments are always within the tone of the site. If this continues, I won’t donate any more, neither will I bother sharing your articles on my pages and groups.

galamcennalath

Echoing proudscots point about BT women, they do Curran and Lamont. However they are not exactly leading, are they.

It is a good point about the general lack of BT women. The extent to whether an organisation has good gender balance tells you quite a lot about it. Just look at historical examples of other male dominated groups.

HandandShrimp

I think Alistair is probably a decent enough bloke…so I’m going with he simply hasn’t a clue what he is talking about.

caz-m

Team Work.

Good to see that Newsnet Scotland and Wings are running this story at the same time.

“The SNP has written to the Information Commissioner calling for action to be taken to ensure the UK Government publishes the details of its polling on the referendum – after it emerged that the true cost now stands at £300,000.”

link to newsnetscotland.com

Stevie

If you are becoming like Newsnet Scotland then you’ll lose much of the vibe and support. I no longer donate or comment there (like so very many).

Stevie

It’s working now.

G. P. Walrus

“If you ask 10 questions and don’t like the result from two of them, you’re perfectly at liberty only to publish the results of the other eight.”

So it would seem that, however many questions they asked, they didn’t like the results from any of them.

Bugger (the Panda)

Stevie

I am getting put in moderation.

For some reason akismet is bouncing people and Stu does not have a clue why either.

It isn’t personal.

Dcanmore

It is probably both, however Carmichael is there to be told what to do, he’s just not very good at expiditing it.

There is only two reasons I can think of about polling data being withheld: one is the obvious not liking the results as they reflect poorly for Better Together No Thanks and the British Government; second is the poll was commissioned just to harvest data to determine what the next Better Together No Thanks tactics should be, by targeting weak areas of the YES campaign that the polling data revealed.

If the poll did cost £300,000 and say only several questions were asked, then going by the amount, the sample must have been quite large (4000+) to justify the cost and with such a sample something has worried the British Government.

In any event there is something rotten going on and balloons like Carmichael are ending up being no more than apologists and liars for the government. If they hve nothing else to say then that should be a good indicator that there is real panic behind the scenes.

It’s not just Carmichael and his Fozzy Bear routine, you just have to look at the actions of Scottish Labour as being the real indicator. Taking the ‘fact’ that we’re supposed to believe that the unionists are 20 points ahead in the polls with a few short weeks to go. So why the nastiness? Why running to right-wing newspapers to get ludicrous articles published? Why the battle bus traveling up and down the country? Why go to the trouble of wheeling out all and sundry to speak against independence? Why so much lobbying business to get money donated to Better Together? Why such a large media campaign? Why the rebranding of Better Together and the re-launching of United with Labour? Why is the YES movement not just simply ignored if they feel they are going to win by a two-thirds majority?

There is something wrong of course, it’s lies and always has been from the beginning. They don’t believe in what they say and they don’t believe in the skewed polls. The government polling information was circulated and a horror show was predicted for them. So a ramping up is required, take to the roads and attack the SNP/First Minister as nasty as possible and use all your friends in the media for maximum exploitation in delivering certain messages (most recently bullying and nazism).

The unionists have to do two things to win, they need the core Labour vote to rise up and be counted and they need a low turnout because that’s how Labour have hung on in recent by-elections.

What everyone should do at this stage is check to see you are on the voting register, just in case something sneaky has happened and you need to re-register but you don’t realise it. Expect the ‘dark arts’ being applied by the NO campaign from now on as happened in the ’79 referendum.

Geoff Huijer

This continual lying and getting away with it, the biased media, people who suck up all the misinformation, and the Labourite (Tory in a poor disguise) hatred of Alex Salmond (which means they will Vote No; WTF!) is seriously getting me down.

How can people be given a chance to change the status quo and not even look into it? Especially with the track record Westminster has?

If we get a No vote I seriously do not know what I will do; to have no hope of the future. Westminster will have taken away any hope, and done it by hoodwinking the people.

Yesterday we saw a guy proudly proclaiming he wasn’t a Thatcherite and had ‘never voted Tory & never will’ and yet he would obviously (being a No) happily vote to continue a system that regularly gives us Tory Rule rather than for the chance to end (for the forseeable future) Tory Governments. I just don’t understand.

Anyone prepared to have a photo taken like that of themselves and knowing that it will be published is a fool.

A bit O/T, but on the topic of photos. Today’s i paper has an interview with Ali Darling and with a nice big photo of him. Yesterday’s i paper had an article by FM Alex Salmon, with a postage stamp sized photo of him, and a large photo of PM Davy Cameron.

Reminds me of the Herald’s campaign for Jim Murphy some years back before it went all wrong for Labour – Jim Murphy playing fitba’. Jim Murphy playing fitba’, again. Jim Murphy campaigning, smiling – big colour photo -arm in arm with Mags Curran. And postage stamps photos of Alex Salmon and Nicola Sturgeon, In black and white and caught “off camera” so no big cheesy happy camera smiles.

All those quoted are SLAB and Stobart’s lorries are more articulate than them.

The consensus on the street is that Alistair Carmichael is a buffoon, a sentiment shared I am sure by many on his own team, so I would be inclined to ignore anything about him. It is very obvious he is no longer being used as the Better Together front man.

Bigger threat is Jim “Look at me, I’m playing football” Murphy though he is heartily disliked by many in his own party. The more we see Jim the less anybody is impressed.

I am becoming quite concerned by the degree of naivety shown by many of our supporters. Some seem to think that the Sunday Herald should publish as a YES leaflet which would of course completely undermine anything it printed.

Others think that we are falling to a NO vote “because all the papers say so” and are becoming disheartened. As if the papers would say anything else!
They are doing exactly as all the papers and Better Together want. That is the unionist trap and they are falling into it. There is no evidence to suggest the NO vote is improving. But if they can blunt the enthusiasm of the YES army that is what they will do.

The YES Team know when to ramp up the game. It is from mid tolate August onwards. Lots of stuff is under wraps

That eight hundred thousand quid UK.gov vote no pamphlet never came to our area of Aberdeen but it’s a solid Tory voting burb in a Labour/SNP constituency. yerkitbreeks @ 10:43 says:

‘There are some useful clarifications about, such as this new one on European accession for Scotland.’

A legal opinion isn’t a clarification, it’s a series of assertions that can only be tested in court. The EU legal team, the UK legal team and EU officials take an opposing view to Shona D-S with regard to Scottish membership. It follows that if Scotland secedes and demands EU membership as of right, its bid to join the EU may be bogged down in protracted court hearings. Trying to join a club by suing the membership is possibly unwise and may be doomed to failure. Happy to be proved wrong.

Remind me, has the First Minister offered a referendum yet to confirm electoral support for Scottish membership of the EU?

WantonWampum.

Those who buy MSM must expect to be hoodwinked but they must always remember that every time they pay for MSM they are contributing to the downfall of their own beliefs.

When you cannot buy the BT arguments that are depicting blatant lies and obfuscation – it must be an act of lunacy to then go to a newsagents and pay for pit-props that support BT and Darling.

Let the tories BRIBE Darling and BT but ensure the money for bribes are solely from tories and Rowling.

Signally, the collapse of MSM readership and viewing figures have become another secret saw that is ripping apart the shareholders investments and their profits.

Speaking for myself (and probably many others) – I can vividly recall the sense of utter despair and despondency in 1979 when that rigged referendum result was published and the despicable ” 40 per cent rule” robbed us of Freedom, despite the fact that Independence had a Majority at over 77,000.

The major difference this time around – is this website – Wings over Scotland – and other websites where real info can be distributed across all levels of Scottish society and all levels of curiousity.

Who in Scotland wants to get rid of the House of Lards?
Who in Scotland wants Trident Weapons of Mass Destruction?
Who wants a PASSPORT in Scotland – not from Belfast?
Who wants our Ancient Scottish Borders controlled by Scots instead of being controlled by Belfast?
Who, in SCOTLAND is willing to pay tax to build a brand new RAF Base in Ulster – after RAF Leuchars is closed in December 2014.?
Leaving only RAF Lossiemouth to protect us?
Who wants to return 6,250 square miles of Scotland`s Ancient Inshore Fisheries on the North Sea from England?
(WE can salute Blair and Brown for that in 1999)

Via an act of utter treachery in 2007 (after SNP WON Minority Govt) Brown spitefully shifted Passport Processing from Glasgow to Belfast — on the 300th ANNIVERSARY of the Act of Union of 1707.

187 x workers made redundant at Glasgow Passport Office.

None of the above is ” On Offer ” from BamCam,Clegg or Mibbeland – and all three know that Darling can only “DAE what they have telt him”. What`s new there.

Gladly is the cross eyed bear(sorry)

“GLADLY” is the cross I`d bear, but only the Saltire – and – on Sept.18th 2014 I will proudly mark my ballot with a signal Saltire.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned on Wings but there is a fantastic article from a young woman called Lauren Reid on weegingerdug about her journey from hardened No to passionate Yes. I think it is the one outstanding piece to reference in any discussion with any young folk we come across who say they are voting No because (a) They are proud protestants (b) Rangers fans or (c) both. Or even to mention to any young females, three of whom I encountered yesterday in Burnbank who, as a bit of a laugh, in unison said loudly that they were voting No as they passed the Yes campaigners waiting for Jim Murphy to show up. I’m the wrong age to be accosting young lassies but it might be something some of our female campaigners to keep in mind. Here’s the link. link to weegingerdug.wordpress.com

Apologies to all about Mr Bumble’s fate.

Andy-B

Steady on Rev, that’s one hell of an insult to bumbling oafs, comparing them to the Secretary of State for anywhere but Scotland, Alistair Carmichael.

Meanwhile Torcuil Crichton, of the London owned Daily Record, who wants us to stay with the union and the paedophile ridden Westminster, no thanks Torcuil I’d rather watch the no camps latest partners the Orange Order.

Anyway Torcuil gives kudos to Gordon Browns latest pathetic effort, claiming an independent Scotland would make the power companies even richer, Crichton of course forgets, Ed Miliband was his Energy secertary, and he did nothing to stop the rot, why oh why would anyone take him or Torcuil seriously now.

Why don’t you do something constructive Torcuil and report more on the missing 100 odd dossiers at Westminster, it would make a change from being Miliband and Browns punchinello.

“Why is there no leading female in Better Together?”

Err! So you claim the leader of the Scottish Tories, Ms Davidson is not a female leader who is also in Better Together?

That Johann Lamont is not a female leader who is also in better Together?

That Wee Willie Rennie is not a female lead … oops! Err! Something wrong there.

Robert Peffers

It has to be said – so I’m going to say it.

That photo up there /|\ is a real photographic classic.
Fair made my day it did.

As my old wise Grannie was wont to say about such things, “Jings! Whit a face tae folla a flittin”.

Robert Peffers

Grannie would also almost certainly have added.
“Yon fairly taks the biscuit”

Tom Foyle

Mike calls him a piece of excrement, which is an unfair, unkind and untrue comparison. I’ve known some fine pieces of excrement. Why, only this morning…never mind.

Off topic.

The Yes Scotland Information Hub is crowdfunding for four advert trailers to cover the STIRLING constituency. These will be vital in helping secure a Yes vote in the STIRLING area for the referendum on 18th September.
