The listening blog

Posted on April 26, 2012 by

Regular readers may have noticed that our comments system has been prone to random brainstorms for a while, leading to some awkwardly-formatted comments that can be a bit of a pain to read. Ever alert to customer concerns, we’ve installed some new plugins that should smarten things up somewhat, and which also provide a five-minute editing window so you can go back and fix any embarrassing clangers that may have slipped into the first draft.

Um, that’s it. Nothing more to see here. Move along, now.

Oh thank god… a new thread!

I was getting a bit obsessed with Severin 😀

    P.S. Nice!!!

[EDIT] – Couldnt resist… Can you make the edit countdown timer be in the style of the clock on 24?

So what does this do? Ah. And this? I see. And how about this? Wow! An invisible underline. And this? An invisible strike-through. Great, I’ll never have to type a fake ^W again.

    Wonder what
    this
    does?

    Invisible bullets!

    That’s
    clever
    stuff.

    Invisible numbers!

But what happens if I type <big>this</big>? And how to get 72-point green blinking text (as we de rigeur last time I looked at HTML)?

Teething problems I think. Either that or a problem between my keyboard and my chair. Edit function works fine though.

At least i can comment on here! 🙂
On the ‘Bloomin heather’ thread on NNS, i posted several replies yesterday to questions asked of me. Despite being civil, not one has been posted. It seems i am not allowed to defend my anti-windfarm position.
If sites only allow one point of view, then they will soon grow stale.

I hit strikethrough a couple of times and my screen started to vibrate. Is that bad? 🙁

As has been discussed here and on NNS, they have a slow initial release from premod

If you are a new user, or on the naughty step, it can take a while to get posts modded, but you posts, or some of them at least, seem to be there now

Apologies, mato21 – I did get your email, but it was so vaguely worded that I avoided responding in case it was phishing/malware. It also looked suspicious because there were no posts from you in either the moderation queue or the spam filter (until the one you just posted), so for some unfathomable reason they just weren’t getting here at all. You should be fine now.

    “Invisible bullets!”

They work fine here. Just click the icon before you start the list.

    1. Then you get a first thing,
    2. Followed by a second thing,
    3. And then the last thing.

Just hit Return twice to end the list.

    • Bullet points
    • Work the same way
    • As numbered lists.

And strikethrough text isn’t is fine too.

I have no idea what the heck you’re all doing to make it not work. Are you typing your comments on a Commodore 64 or something?

    I
    assumed
    that
    it
    was
    WYSIWYG

    but
    it
    isn’t
    as
    the
    preview
    looked
    fine.

I never had a Commodore 64. And this isn’t Vista.
This time I didn’t type the text then apply the formatting. We’ll see if that works.

So maybe it is me (or my PC). If there really is underlining in Douglas Clark’s 12:16pm it definitely is me.
    One last try.

RevStu, PLEASE can you do something to allow your harassed readers to access a list of previous blog posts.  It’s driving me nuts.  Yes, the cryptic titles might still make it hard to find the right one, but it would be a start.

Right now I want the one where you demonstrated that England has never been forced into a Labour government it didn’t vote for by Scottish votes.  I have no clue what search term to use that won’t return almost every article you ever wrote.  Other blogs mostly have some way to scan the titles by month, and I thought you’d added that, but no.

Ho hum, back to this frustrating search.

I certainly have, it’s in the right-hand bar right beside the one that lets you search by category.

It’s OK, I found it, because it was on the “most read articles” list.  But the basic point still stands.  There’s no way to go directly to an older article you want to cite, and it would be good if there were.

  19. Morag says:

That only gives me a list of months.  If I click on a month, that doesn’t give me a list of titles to choose from, it loads up the actual blog posts from that month, pages-worth, graphics and all.

I swear it did do as you say when you first added it.  But it’s not doing it for me now.

To my knowledge the Archives widget hasn’t been changed or updated in any way since I added it, but I’ll see if I can find a decent one that does what you’re after. In the meantime, and in the nicest possible way, 😉 I suggest brushing up your search skillz a bit. I decided to try to find it myself by that route, and after a couple of seconds of thought typed in the most obvious search string I could think of, “labour elections england”, which brought it straight up as the fifth result on the first page…
