LibDems? Horrible, horrible opportunist right-wing party that fooled the terminally naive for too long that it was a moderate, compassionate movement.

Isn't it possible that forcing people to be materially responsible for each other isn't a good idea in the long run?  That the reality of shortages of money applies to the government, just as much as welfare recipients? It's not like anyone is going to starve through lack of resources any time soon in this country, lack or responsibility maybe.
I suggest that it isn't some sort of evil that causes people to think that the welfare state's inherent problems outweigh it's benefits, but simply a different opinion on what's best in the long run for our complicated society.
Of course it's easier to see things in black and white, but that doesn't make it correct.

Compassion by proxy? Compassion by forced national policy? Compassion is an instinct that forces YOU to DO SOMETHING, moaning about evil rich people and the plight of the poor and voting for political parties who's number one priority is to force their ideology on millions of people for their own gain isn't compassion, it's political consumerism.
If you care about the poor go and do something about it yourself, unless you're too busy working for that pension whose funding relies on the big businesses and exploitation that makes the problem worse.
If only the government can save us, we're all screwed anyway.

No who gave the government the power to enable multi-millionaires exploit the country?  It wasn't always there.  The contradiction in all this is that the bigger the state gets, the more corruptible it becomes.  That's why if you put all your hopes in government to solve problems, and want it to get bigger to do so, you're simply making the problem worse.
Anyone serious about caring for the poor better be prepared to give up their pension and mortgages that increases the power of bankers and the rich, because other than all all there is left is ignorant moaning.
