Wings Over Scotland

The Sealand Gazette

Posted on January 28, 2013 by

Readers as alert as this site’s will no doubt have already noticed our latest addition, signified as it is by the rather jarring appearance of a Union Jack over in the central links column – The Sealand Gazette. It’s a Scoopit news-aggregator like Peter Bell’s fine Referendum 2014 (and others), but with a rather different theme.

The Gazette, simply put, records the many reasons why Scotland can no longer afford to stay in the Union. It was founded back in June 2012, then neglected for a bit, then taken up again, and then we belatedly realised that it had a greater relevance than its original purpose and gave it a bit of a brush-up.

If you ever forget what we’re fighting for (or against), it’ll remind you.

Rev- Not for the first time do I doff my cap.  The Sealand Gazette could be a very powerful weapon in our armoury.  Although it is a negative, scary place to be, it also explains why many of us want to govern ourselves.  I think the more people who visit it the better.  It could provide vital ammunition for independenistas in tens of thousands of conversations over the next 20 months. I salute you sir!

I see that the new HS2 line will be costing £32.7billion at least and it only gets to Leeds. That works out at over £500 per head- well taking into account that Danny Alexander recently terrified us by stating it would cost us all £1 a head for independence does this now mean that we will actually all be £499 better off with independence according to Westminster figures- which we all know are a bit of a stranger to the truth anyway.
Better Together must be some sort of centipede or else they would have run out of feet to shoot themselves in by now.

O/T sorry for daft question, but surely Scots aren’t footing 9% of the HS2 costs?

Probably most of it by way of the unexplained hole that are taxes taken from Scotland for UK projects and costs [cost like Embassies and wars and other overspends]

Yes, Scotland contributes over 9% of the UK tax base so technically we are paying for 9% of HS2, which would be fine if at least 9% of that investment could be in Scotland or benefit Scotland directly, which is clearly won’t:  I would be very surprised if the economic modelling they have done for HS2 shows any significant benefit stretching as far north as Scotland.

This is only one example of where we pay taxes but do not gain from the use of said taxes and where we only get back what Westminster decides we should have.

Sealand Gazette looks like a good stick to go with the pro Yes carrot!

As for HS2, I’ve never understood why it has to start in London. A triangle or v could more cheaply and quickly made between Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, bringing huge benefits of interconnectedness to the north of England. Why does everything have to be set up to benefit London? Because if it starts there, HS2 will just suck more business London’s way.

  15. Amanayeman says:

No,No, No. You haven’t been paying attention. As Channel 4 news told us the HS2 will benefit the North of Britain away up as far as Leeds and bring prosperity to the United Kingdom. Honestly, you cybernats

As I understand things, HS2 will be the realisation of an old European Transport Plan, which aims to “eventually” link Dublin to the continent. As usual with such ambitious projects, its implementation will, by necessity, be incremental. Also by “necessity”, the more peripheral European regions will be required to wait for their jam, which may or may not come tomorrow.
