We are several

Posted on January 29, 2013 by

Just a quick bit of infrastructure, folks. We’ve been meaning for a while to get round to sorting out proper author tags, as the WordPress theme the site uses annoyingly doesn’t link from bylines. However, as the sidebar “tag cloud” isn’t big enough to include all our tags at once, even that didn’t quite do the job.

So now in the black tab bar at the top of the screen there’s a handy Contributors page, from which you can immediately and easily locate articles by your favourite WingsLand writers who aren’t me. Want to feature in it? We want to hear from you.

Whilst you are restructuring can I ask if you would move the “Recent Comments” sidebar block up a bit (to above the “Tags” block, say?).

This is because if you are following the discussion(s) actively, as most of us do, it is handy when one logs in to see at a glance which ‘threads’ are active, i.e. the ones with recent posting going on, without having to scroll down madly to find them (I’m lazy and/or obsessed with ergonomics).

Of course the tags are very useful for searching for the various topics discussed throughout the whole blog but I think that the immediacy of the debate demonstrated by the many informed comments generated here is (one of the things) that makes this site so special.

Thanks to splendid reader “mrbfaethedee”, bylines DO now link to all of an author’s articles.

Major: The problem, obviously, is that everything has a claim to being higher up the page, and having lots of similar-looking sections clumped together makes them awkward to read. However, as some small consolation I’ve bumped the number of “recent comments” up from 10 to 20 to at least make it a bit easier to keep track of where there are still conversations happening without them getting bumped off the bottom by fast-moving threads.
