Wings Over Scotland

Translation mishap

Posted on August 15, 2013 by

We were very proud of a terrific performance from Scotland at Wembley last night, in a highly entertaining friendly the national side was unlucky to lose due to a couple of lapses in concentration at set pieces. We also greatly enjoyed the tremendous atmosphere created by both sets of fans, which we read about in the Daily Mail:

It seemed the days of booing national anthems had passed. But old habits die hard against the Auld Enemy so Flower of Scotland got the treatment and God Save the Queen was booed in response. Pretty unsavoury all round.”

And also in the Scottish Daily Mail:

“The sing-off was generally good-natured but the Scottish contingent let themselves down badly at the start as a cacophony of boos drowned out God Save The Queen after respect was afforded Flower Of Scotland.”

Wait, what?

.

(As an aside, we generally deplore the booing of away team anthems as boorish and disrespectful and counter-productive. However, we make an exception for Scotland vs England games. The two nations have spent much of their history at war one way or another, and we can hardly recall experiencing anything more thrilling and funny and theatrical in sport than the Euro 2000 playoffs, where first God Save The Queen at Hampden, and then Flower Of Scotland at Wembley, were rendered completely inaudible by deafening waves of boos, whistles and jeers from the home fans. It was a glorious spectacle both times, adding greatly to the sense of occasion, and was a wholly sporting phenomenon, with no ugly scenes at or outside either game.)

I mentioned the phenomenon of things that have to have Scottish at the start of thier name to prove they’re actualy Scottish to one of the lads at work the other day and was saying how that’s a dead give away that they’re not really Scottish. You know, Scottish Conservatives, Scottish Sun, Scottish Labour and the like.

Whereas real Scottish institutions don’t, like The Daily record, the Scotsman, The Herald. (You can dislike them if you want, but they are at least genuinely Scottish hence they don’t feel the need to put the nation in thier name.) You don’t get the English Daily Mail or the English Sun, because everyone knows without being told they are English papers. The conversation was going very well until he said “What about the Scottish National Party?”

I had to mutter and mumble about the exception that proves the rule.

The Scottish Daily Mail isn’t really Scottish. Were the two articles by the same Journalist?

During a twitter exchange with one of their Scottish hacks last weekend, he said I would have to read the paper to see how much of their print-edition indyref related stories make it onto the Mail online site. Well, I was able to get hold of all of the previous weeks’ editions from an elderly neighbour. I haven’t gone through them all yet, but the score so far is 0. Anybody would think that they are trying to keep their indy-ref outpourings under the internet scrutiny radar!

Nice to see the “Scottish” Daily Fail doing its best to put down the Tartan Army…..and FAILING! Just a pity they didn’t read the tweet I saw last night from a woman who was traveling on the tube after the match last night. She compared both sets of fans, the English fans made her feel terrified that she was about to be attacked whilst the Tartan Army were real gents, her words not mine. She also seemed to enjoy the banter amongst the Tartan Army and the songs they were singing. Now you can call me biased but I’d rather give my full support to the Tartan Army ANY day of the week before supporting England fans who made a single woman feel scared to travel in her home town!

Here’s a link to the Daily Fail I got on Twitter last night, unfortunately it does not have some photos that I think were really entertaining, namely the photos of Trafalgar Square’s fountain AFTER it had been “cleansed” by the Tartan Army. By “cleansed” I am of course referring to the “incident” where some washing up liquid was “accidentally” spilt into the fountain. 😆

Reminds me of complaints a few years ago that Scottish fans at an international  7s tournament in Murrayfield had booed the England team whenever it appeared.  BBC attempted a live vox pop on this, to be told by a bemused French fan – no, everybody booed the England team!  Microphone suddenly cut off.

On a couple of occasions I’ve met people who were part of events or incidents (not political) and later read accounts in the newspapers.  They were mystified – they knew that that wasn’t what happened.  Sometimes they had been inteviewed only to discover that words had been attributed to them that they never uttered.  These people now treat the press with, shall we say, caution.  It’s happened to me too, but then I never expected anything else.

So, on the credit side (my glass is always half full) there would have been Mail readers at the game who will be a little nonplussed at that second description of events, and consequently a little doubtful of what they see in the papers. Good.

And if so, its OUR anthem we were boo-ing and we can do what we want to it.
When it is no longer OUR official anthem then we will show more respect (probably).
I still think it more bizarre that in an international of this nature both teams don’t have their own anthem. Why does England have to use a SHARED one?  Surely there is a tune/song that is specifically English to stand to, or a special one could be written for them?
Maybe the Mail should be thinking out the box a wee bit. What was the percentage of Scots fans boo-ing and if that percentage translates into #yes votes, what is the likely outcome?

As I said above I am trawling through week-old Daily Fails to see what they are saying off-line in their less-monitored print edition indyref propaganda and spin. If I could do it in real-time I would, but I travel out of Scotland a lot for my work, so can’t commit to doing more than a retrospective review…but will keep up with that in the meantime unless there is a volunteer out there who can do it in real-time?

This goes back to a comment/suggestion I made a few weeks ago: that some of us on here could help Rev Stuart to monitor ‘everything’, by getting organised, by divvying up each MSM title/station to one of us (each a willing volunteer of course) to keep an eye on and comment on/feed stuff to Rev Stuart.

I’ve just been doing a bit of that on twitter at the moment re BBCScotland/HeeHaw Newsdrive: the presenter called the delegation of Scottish government civil servants that went to NATO the “SNP delegation”*. Half an hour later, when interviewing a representative of Scottish senior citizens, she spoke over him and cut him off when he started talking about why he is going to vote Yes: “We’ll come to that in a minute” she said. And then, er, didnt…

So, over to the rest of you – anybody up for volunteering to do some crowd-source-esque style media monitoring?  At least one volunteer to read/listen to an MSM title/programme so the rest of us don’t have to? And to help/take some of the pressure off Rev Stuart!?

*Stop press!  The BBC Newsdrive presenter (Laura Maxwell) just made an on-air apology and correction about the “SNP delegation” slip because of my twitter comment!

So we have two papers, one for each country, both part of an ostensible political union. One paper says both teams booed each other’s national anthem, the other said only one team did, with the other one “afforded respect.” What kind of Bizarro-world is it when the country which says the nation which engaged in such boorish behaviour was their own? In just about any other rational situation you could conceive a country trying to score jingo points by saying their country was respectful while the other nations’ was impolite. In what other country would the opposite be the case?

Ben, it’s not at all unusual to have grandparents from several different countries.  It just so happens that at the moment the countries yours come from are in a political union, but it also just so happens that that might be about to change.

What if your grandparents were from France?  Or Poland?  Or Australia?  Would you somehow want to see all these as a sort of uniform “my country”?  Of course not.  You’d be used to the fact that you have grandparents from several countries, that’s all.  You say you have a grandparent from Ireland.  Well, unless you mean NI, then you already have a part of your heritage from outside the UK.

Where do YOU feel at home?  The majority in Britain these days identify with their country, not the state.  They’re English, or Scottish, or whatever.  If you were born and brought up in England, what’s wrong with an English identity?  Or if in Scotland, likewise?  The entire world isn’t going to enter into a political union just because lots of people have grandparents from across various borders.

Nothing. Nothing happens. Nothing changes. Ending a political union does not mean your grandparents from Scotland will somehow become “different” in the event of Scottish independence. The thing is, you’ll STILL be a “Brit, through and through,” because you were born during a time when the UK still existed. Likewise your grandparents. So, again, nothing would change. Independence wouldn’t retroactively make you non-British: it’s not like some sort of annulment of identity.
