Wings Over Scotland

The occasional flicker

Posted on August 10, 2016 by

This morning’s SNP BAD piece in the Herald has undergone a slight change in tone since we wrote about it.

backfirec

We’ll just assume that a small pang of conscience overcame someone.

The actual text of the article is mostly unchanged, save for the first three paragraphs (original version on top, new version below):

backfired

We’re particularly impressed that the ferry services and island communities are now “dealing with” the additional traffic brought in by the cheap-fares scheme, having been “struggling to handle” it just a few hours earlier.

Sometimes it’s nice to end the day on a good-news story.

Malky, I totally agree, another SNP very very bad myth having been seen by many people. These UKok media lies get through to the fickle, who prefer to have their prejudice confirmed.

I was reading up on some research, recently, about how a negative view of someone, for whatever reason, say in a neighbourhood, is really difficult to reverse in the minds of people. In contrast, should someone be viewed in a good light, then fall from grace it is more likely that people will not persistently view that person in a negative light.

So, paint your enemy as bad consistently, and people will find it very difficult to see them in a good light, even if the proof and evidence is there in broad daylight that they are good.

So the damage is done and these people are off the hook in not appearing totally biased, it is all completely orchestrated. Easy peasy.

It is true that there was a bit of a fiasco on Saturday night after the Lochaline to Fishnish ferry was cancelled by Calmac due to technical problems and the weather.

Those who hoped to take that Saturday night ferry were advised to travel to Kilchoan to catch the ferry to Tobermory, even though it meant that by the time they arrived there would only be one ferry left to leave and that could carry only 11 cars.

There were 26 vehicles advised by Calmac to head for that ferry with certain knowledge that not all could board it. The journey itself no doubt causing problems on the Islands roads as they headed en masse to their destination only to be disappointed.

This is a story worthy of reporting as the P&J did on Monday.

It highlights the problems faced by Islanders when ferries can be cancelled for all kinds of reasons, not least the weather and was reported by P&J writer Sue Restan under the headline:

”Ferry chaos as passengers left stranded overnight”

    https://archive.is/oSmqz

The P&J writer followed up today with another article with the headline:

”How the scheme to make ferry fares affordable is a victim of its own success”

From now it it gets very murky, the Herald jump in with another angle entirely on the same story. An SNP BAADD story from their point of view as can seen above, only to completely reverse their headline after ridicule from Wings and no doubt pressure from other areas.

This whole fiasco makes our media look really bad, our journalists shallow and their owners political lapdogs for the Unionist narrative. If it’s embarrassing for me then it must be 100 times more embarrassing for those writing such guff.

I’m happy of course that they have now changed their headline to more accurately reflect reality but should it really take pressure from any source whatsoever to force newspapers to be more balanced in their reporting of Scotland?

Off course not and that is a major reason for Scotland to become Independent.

The Herald which once could proudly claimed to be the oldest newspaper in the world is now but a parody of a newspaper that steeps lower than the Sun did in the 70’s with misleading headlines.

When it folds, few will weep other than those losing their jobs and those that can see clearly how it could all have been so different.

Yes, they would have. I kind of know them a bit, and they’re really nice people. A couple of times they’ve waited for me coming from the Corran for the last ferry across, one time re-dropped the ramp. It’s possible they didn’t know the capacity of the Kilchoan ferry though, and also possible they told just a few who asked, or the few at the front of the queue, and the rest tagged on behind – or made their own plans. I hope there isn’t any investigation, the wrong people could get into trouble.

Sh*t happens, and it wasn’t helped by the storm (which might have caused the breakdown or cancellation). That meant the Kilchoan ferry couldn’t go back and for (about 35 minutes each way). calmac could also do with erecting more electronic ferry information boards, including one back on the main road side of the Corran ferry (don’t think there’s one there). At least then some of the people could have tried to get an extra or late ferry from Oban, perhaps 45 minutes down the A82.

From Sturgeon’s timeline yesterday tea-time, the link to:

    http://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/8413

“The EU Single Market: The Value of Membership versus Access to the UK”

    such as:

Single Market Access is virtually meaningless as a concept.
UK service exports are especially important.
Single Market Membership is particularly important for financial services.
New trade deals unlikely to compensate fully for EU trade.
Single Market membership could be worth 4% on GDP relative to reliance on WTO terms.
Direct budget impacts are secondary relative to overall economic outlook.

    but

Single Market ‘membership’ by contrast involves elimination of barriers to trade in a way that no existing trade deal, customs union or free trade area achieves. In particular it means reducing “non-tariff” barriers like licensing and other regulatory constraints to supplying goods or services. These sorts of barriers have become relatively more important to trade than tariffs (taxes on trade), and especially so for services.

But outside the EU, single market membership also comes at the cost of accepting future regulations designed in the EU without UK input. This may be seriously problematic for some parts of the financial services sector. Choices in these domains will most likely be far more important than any deal on budget contributions.

I’d like to see a comparative study for Scotland, unlikely to happen. And strangely enough nothing about this today in the Herald (so far).

This is of particualr note for me: “These sorts of barriers have become relatively more important to trade than tariffs

Unionists are arguing that iScotland would have a problem with tariffs to/from the rUK, it appears that in any case that is exaggerated, but of course if the rUK does go for single market membership, with Scotland in the EU there are no tariffs, nor are there any “non-tariff barriers”.

As expected Project Fear 2 is toothless and plain wrong, with such comments as:

“That’s before considering the very significant impact on the wider economy of a hard border, and potential tariff barriers with (by far) our biggest market”

designed to mystify, terrify, and bury people in gibberish.

Can anyone ever remember a time in Scotland when so much was being done by its government on behalf of its people? I certainly don’t.

When SLabour/LibDums held the reins up to 2007, can anyone remember any major achievement of their tenure that really benefitted the people of Scotland? (Giving £billions back to Westminster doesn’t count).

The SLab/Dums were administrations of think wee and “Do nothing – if you do nothing then you can’t be blamed when it all goes Pete Tong.” Too feart to do anything remotely positive. Subserviant to London to the last.

Whereas the present SNP administration thinks big and has the attitude of “Do as much as we can to improve the lives of ordinary people of this country – even if it risks getting some things wrong.”

That’s the difference. Scotland, finally, has a grown up governemnt prepared to take responisbility for its actions; prepared to take risks for the benefit of everyone who live here. Conversely, Slab/Dums weren’t even prepeared to take responsibility for their complete inaction.

Next year’s local council elections are, arguably, the most important elections this country since Spetember 2014. This cannot be stressed enough. Turnouts for the council elections are notoriously porr. We can’t afford for that to happen in 2017. We simply must get every YES supporting voter out for those elections. There is one very important reason for this. The councils organise elections/referendums. If the SG call a snap Indy referendum in 2017 and WM refuses to sanction it, then the SG may well go it alone. But they will need SNP controlled councils to make it happen. So, we need to make sure every council in Scotland is controlled by the SNP.

Transport Scotland says it aims to rid Scotland of petrol and diesel driven cars by 2050.Yet another example of a forward looking government, in my humble opinion.
