What dismays me is that the opportunity was there for Scotland to actually play a big role as a moral force in European affairs and in the wider world. Rejecting nukes was just the starting point. The world is crying out for independent, progressive voices on the international stage.
It is almost inconceivable for the UK as there is so much baggage there, and it is impossible for the UK to take some kind of moral high ground after Iraq etc etc.
I can’t see how force alone can neutralise ISIS though God knows we will try. I certainly don’t think obtaining new nuclear attack submarines will improve our security one fucking iota- they will just lead to our conventional military being underfunded and make us a more attractive target.
The articles linked to on Scottish independence causing increasing the threat from terrorism were obviously bullshit – lets credit no voters with a little intelligence! I won’t believe they swung a single vote.
The inevitable is that Bliar McDougall will join his pal Alastair in the house of lords for services rendered to democracy.

It’s been non-stop since the attacks, even though as far as I can gather, there is no definitive proof that this has anything to do with Syria. Nevertheless, it’s been Syria this, Syria that, Syria something else, Syria bad, Syria terrible, until the state-sponsored media has managed to brainwash the people that Syrians are to blame for all of the world’s ills. It’s Iraq all over again.
Now perhaps I’m thinking too much into this, but I do have a real problem with the Syrian passport that was “found”.
I’m quite sure many of the refugees would not be caring if they had their passports or not when they were scrambling onto boats to flee bombings and persecution, not knowing if they would even make it to safety.
Likewise, would a terrorist, pretending to be a refugee, knowing that he is going to a foreign land to commit an act of terrorism, bring a passport with him? And once he had set off to commit that highly orchestrated act of terror, ensure that he had his passport on him when he blew himself up?

The best way to protect yourself against terrorism is to stop creating terrorists.I think leaving the EU will lead to closer military links with USA.That would lead to more animosity and more terror.

The elephant in the room has always been Saudia Arabia. You cannot tackle ISIS, or indeed terrorism in general, without dealing with Saudia Arabia. Can we expect some action to be taken against them some time soon preferably before they destroy Yemen?

To put this into perspective, when the bombing of the twin towers was being planned what outcome would the Islamic terrorists have planned and hoped for?
Sure the distruction of an American icon of capitalism. But what more, what would they hope to achieve when the dust settled.
They certainly would have hoped for retaliation and thus the further radicalisation of Muslims. They would hope for a massive influx of recruits. Invasion of Muslim countries would be a bonus especially if you continue with occupation and a puppet western government. If you could chose any single Muslim state you would like them to choose one with a history of resistance to a superpower.
Long term aims would be the destabilisation of “secular” states and the establishment of fundamentalist Muslim states in their stead.
So one simple question WHO IS WINNING?

I think the outcome is far beyond anything they might have dreamt of.
At that point there was no Islamic AQ type fundimentalists in Iraq or Syria. The state of those two countries now is a direct result of the US/UK invasion of Iraq. And, that invasion was (in some perverse way only Blair and Bush understand) a consequence of 9/11.

Sheesh! The BBC report carries this little snippet from the, “Former Salmond Advisor”, and it explains a lot :-

This is the glaringly obvious flaw in, “The Dark Side’s”, logic. The bland assumption that an independent Scotland would continue with the current level of spending imposed by Westminster. The whole point of independence is to NOT continue with Westminster’s imposed crazy economics policies.
First of all we would not be supporting either Trident, or the crazy levels of spending required to, “punch above our weight”.
Nor would an independent Scotland be required to meet the present per capita share of the UK debt repayment we had no part in running up.
Added to all that we would actually get 100% of the 95% of oil & gas revenues that exist in Scottish Territorial waters. We presently get nothing whatsoever of that revenue as it is claimed by the UK as revenue from, “Extra-Regio-Territories”, and 100% of it goes directly to Westminster.
We do not even get the fabled 8.4% they mention as, “Scotland’s per capita share”, as that particular figure is only used to produce statistical figures for other estimates. We do not actually get the 8.4% just only get credited with it for producing more fake statistics.
I could mention other nice little Westminster earners that never get mentioned that would accrue to an Independent Scotland but will mention a couple of examples.
All court, and on-the-spot fines, imposed in Scotland go directly to the UK treasury. The Scottish Crown Estate profits would remain in Scotland. The list is endless of the Scottish things Westminster grabs for itself but they will not get when we take our independence.
For as long as history has been recorded,the human condition has been for the majority to be led into conflict by the minority.
England has been at the forefront of this for centuries,and succeeded in capturing half the world.
Other European states have also regularly tried to expand their borders,whilst convincing their populations it was against an evil and terrible foe. France ,Germany Spain, Austria, and many more have all been involved at one time or another.
We see the same thing happening today in the Middle East,with the territorial ambitions of governments and nations far removed from the geographical area ,all wanting a slice of the wealth, or a foothold in an important region strategically, in which they can further their own countries interests.
The welfare of the inhabitants who live there is unimportant.They are collateral damage in the bigger game.
The sad thing is that the populations in the region are all being used and manipulated by other forces.Pawns in a game.
This also applies to Israel, who are being just as manipulated by the US just as much as is Syria by Russia.

He does the usual transparent thing of comparing an independent Scotland’s economic way forward as being exactly that of the present Westminster model.
The whole point of independence is to NOT follow the Westminster policies in any way. It is thus the argument of an idiot to conclude Scotland would continue, for example, sending 100% of the 95% of oil & gas revenues down to Westminster or the 1,001 other nice little earners that Westminster currently enjoys from Scotland’s bounty.
In all the comment about refugees and terrorists there is little mention that ISIS kills Muslims, and the refugees are fleeing from death and oppression at their hands.

He said that he’d been talking to people in the airport who had complained about the Syrian refugees coming re. schools, hospitals being overstretched in Scotland. Some concerned in light of what’s happened in France. No mention of a Scottish welcome. Also managed to get his bit in about 1000 refugees arriving before Christmas with Scotland taking one third of them.
I’ll welcome these poor people with open arms but hope that Scotland is not being used by Westminster …. (people turning against the SNP) …. that rUK take their fair share which is 90%, especially as they have been main players in creating this situation.

I may be wrong, but there have been two racist incidents in the last 48 hours, and I wonder if they are orchestrated.

David Cameron (British Empire) is determined to bomb Syria to save face no doubt and use up his stockpile of weapons. Syria has been bombed to smithereens by numerous countries for over a year now and they still haven’t managed to get rid of Daesh. It’s clear that War from the air isn’t working so why on earth keep this up?
Assad has said constantly that he is open to talks. Why don’t they get round the table with him and discuss democratic elections taking place when they eventually restabilise the Country?
Why is the US (two-facedly) working with Turkey in hammering the Kurds; the only group with boots on the ground?
Why is no one in talks with Saudi, and other countries in the region, to discuss them using their troops to deal with Daesh?
Well we all know what’s going on. They want to get their hands on Syria’s resources, to prevent them running their own gas / oil lines / pipes and to control routes between Israel and the Middle East (just some of the nefarious reasons).
Saudi of course has it’s own not so hidden agenda.
If they don’t try to do something constructive soon we’ll be heading for World War 3.

Have you any idea just how convoluted that task is, Doug?
I do regularly post them as they rear their ugly heads above the parapet but listing them in any kind of way is very difficult to do. However here is another couple for the record.
Grid Connection Charges. Now bear in mind that Scotland exported over 26% of her generated capacity over the past year and that was directly to England and across the Irish Sea to N.I.
The National Grid imposes variable Grid Connection Charges upon the generating companies dependant upon their distance from the main population centres a.k.a. London.
Thing is these not only charge the generators for adding power to the grid but they actually subsidise those closer to London.
For example, a generator company in Peterhead, pays £20 per kw for a grid connection but a London-based generator is subsidised by £3 per kw. It is estimated that Scottish based companies currently pay £100 million more than they should as a result. Scotland provides 12% of the UK energy but is charged 40% of the UK’s transmission costs.
The still further North generators from Peterhead are even more overcharged by the grid and they are the best non-renewable sources in Europe.
Here’s another few never mentioned UK benefits. All Road tax goes south as does driving Licence charges. Passports, Road Fuel Duty, Alcohol Duty, Betting tax, Aggregates Levy, Scottish Crown Estate profits. Et Al.
Believe it or not years ago, when I was tracking down these hidden UK benefits, I had a look at companies who only did business in Scotland but had a registered Head Office, (often only an accommodation address with a business that takes phone messages and forwards PO Box mail), and there among the London Registered companies was Dunfermline Athletic FC, (they were then in the Scottish top league).
It turns out, at current prices, (I kid you not), £16.99 will get yourself set up as a London based registered company. Thus your tax, profits and so on are statistically accounted by the UK as London.
As I said the list is endless and just when you think you are near the end of the list another door opens and the contents of that cupboard spill out on the floor.
Everywhere you turn there is yet another nice little UK earner at Scotland’s expense. Yet I have never found a single one that works the other way round.
Have a wee read at Niall Aslan’s, “The Great Obfuscation”. The only reference I could find in a hurry was from the Seed of the Gael website but that should not put you off reading the contents of the article. Niall is a forensic accountant and he was the first to expose the lies of the GERS figures.

The reality is that IS/Daesh are seen as fanatical scum by most people. They promote an extremist version of Islam, and want to spread terror throughout Europe. Paris was a turning point in the attitude of many people.
If there is a vote for airstrikes, maybe it should be a free vote. The worst situation would be for an SNP block vote to prevent it, or to be the only ones voting against it.
Especially if we ever get hit with a similar terrorist attack.

Look at US/UK/Israel who are playing The Great Game, destabilising middle east countries and supporting the players in trying to oust Assad.
The SNP must stand against bombing in Syria. We must not be responsible for the killing and maiming of even more innocent Syrian men, women and children.

I get where you are coming from Onwards especially as so many people seem to have NO idea of what’s actually been going on. They just see Daesh for what they are … evil, psychopathic, demonic monsters that have to be totally exterminated and if the SNP don’t agree to strikes will become extremely unpopular.

Thanks for the excellent link Cameron. Information like this is of course being withheld (distorted) by the CorpMedia. I’m sure that Assad has been far from perfect as a leader and will have to answer for certain ‘activities’ that have taken place in Syria: If not him then his brother Maher al-Assad, Commander of the Republican Guard. However as far as I can make out the vast majority of Syrians back Assad. Strange too that we’ve had so much news coverage of fleeing refugees but no one seems to want to ask them who / what they are fleeing from (maybe they have asked / do know). I’m sure Daesh would be top of the list but who takes second place? US et al bombers or Assad?

Aside from the obvious issues that no missile knows the difference between a Daesh fighter and non combatants I have another substantial problem with it.
It is extrajudicial killing. We are told it is legal, and we are told it is justified because he was planning attacks on the UK. We are told all this, but never offered any evidence to prove the claims.
In the shortest possible terms, that man was targetted in this way because the likelihood of him ever going through the judicial system for his crimes was remote. No other reason. The UK Government is at pains to make sure everyone is told ‘this is legal’ but of course we ignorant punters are not allowed to know WHY it’s legal which makes me think it almost certainly was not.
Course, governments do bump people off like this, but they normally do it nice and quietly and don’t shoot their mouths off about it. This one is fascinating, because they’re very carefully making sure the world knows he was killed using UK intelligence released to the US to allow them to target him. Because they seem to be labouring under the misconception that this is in some way making them look good.
